The absorption, fluorescence and fluorescence-excitation spectra of concentrated toluene solutions of selected para substituted trans-stilbene derivatives provide strong evidence for aggregation. A red-shifted fluorescence spectrum peaking at 420 nm gains in intensity as the stilbene concentration is increased. The excitation spectrum of this new emission is well to the red of the normal stilbene absorption spectrum, consistent with the appearance of a red shifted shoulder in the UV spectrum. Formation of a fluorescent ground state dimer (or higher aggregate) is proposed to account for these observations. The presence of polar substituents is crucial to the formation of this ground state complex.
Biopolymers, polymers produced by living organisms, are used in various fields (e.g., medical, food, cosmetic, medicine) due to their beneficial properties. Recently, biopolymers have been used for control of soil erosion, stabilization of aggregate, and to enhance drilling. However, the inter-particle behavior of such polymers on soil behavior are poorly understood. In this study, an artificial biopolymer (${\beta}$-1,3/1,6-glucan) was used as an engineered soil additive for Korean residual soil (i.e., hwangtoh). The geotechnical behavior of the Korean residual soil, after treatment with ${\beta}$-1,3/1,6-glucan, were measured through a series of laboratory approaches and then analyzed. As the biopolymer content in soil increased, so did its compactibility, Atterberg limits, plasticity index, swelling index, and shear modulus. However, the treatment had no effect on the compressional stiffness of the residual soil, and the polymer induced bio-clogging of the soil's pore spaces while resulting in a decrease in hydraulic conductivity.
The materials showing high structure dispersion with functional properties were developed on the quartz base and those were obtained by mechano-chemical reaction technology. Depending on the processing conditions and subsequent applications the materials produced by mechano-chemical reaction show concurrently magnetic, dielectric and electrical properties. The obtained magnetic-electrical powders classified by aggregate complex of their features as segnetomagnetics, containing a dielectric material as a carrying nucleus, particularly the quartz on that surface one or more layers of different compounds were synthesized having thickness up to 1050nm showing magnetic, electrical properties and others. The similarity of the structure of surface layers of quartz particles subjected to mechano-chemical processing and nano-structure cluspol (clusters in a polymer matrics) material was alsoconfirmed by the fact that the characteristics of ferromagnetic quartz of insulating nano-composite powder were changed with time, after its preparing process was completed.

We perform an experimental study of concrete beam with pultruded fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) plank using as a permanent formwork and the tensile reinforcement. A satisfactory bond at the interface between the smooth surface of the pultruded plank and the concrete must be developed for the FRP plank and the concrete to act as a composite structural member. Two kinds of aggregate were bonded to the FRP plank using a commercially available epoxy. No additional flexural or shear reinforcement was provided in the beams. For comparison we test two types of control specimen. One control did not have any aggregate bonded to the FRP plank and the other control had infernal steel reinforcing bars instead of the FRP plank. The beams were loaded by central patch load to their ultimate capacity. The experimental results were compared to current ACI 318 (2005) and ACI 440 (2006) code predictions. This study demonstrates that the FRP plank has the potential to serve as formwork and reinforcing for concrete structures.
Asphalt binder characteristics in asphalt mixture are changed due to aging. However. depending upon aggregate and binder used, asphalt mixture dose not show the same level of stiffness and brittleness under the same ageing level. The factors affecting Physical Properties change of the asphalt binder within aged asphalt concrete are not well known and there is limited study which is dealing with this topic This study dealt with evaluation of physical properties of asphalt binder recovered from the mixtures after short-term and long-term aging. Two asphalts. two aggregates. two gradations and four polymers were used to make 32 mixture combinations. The mixtures were prepared and aged artificially in a forced draft oven. The measured physical properties included absolute viscosity, kinematic viscosity and penetration. Statistical analyses were carried out to find out the factor(s) having a significant effect on change of physical property of asphalt binder due to asphalt mixture aging. The results of study shown that aggregate, gradation and polymer had a significant effect on change of physical properties of asphalt binder.
This study was performed to evaluate the stress-strain properties of surlightweight polymer concrete using synthetic lightweight aggregates. The following conclusions were drawn; 1. The dynamic modulus of elasticity was in the range of $1.514{\times}10^5{\sim}1.916{\times}10^5kgf/cm^2$, which was approximately 48~96% of that of the normal cement concrete. It was showed larger with the decrease of synthetic lightweight fine aggregate. 2. The static modulus of elasticity was in the range of $2.552{\times}10^4{\sim}4.386{\times}10^4kgf/cm^2$, which was showed lower compared to that of the normal cement concrete. The poisson's number of surlightweight polymer concrete was less than that of the normal cement concrete. 3. The stress-strain curves of surlightweight polymer concrete were showed smaller with the increase of expanded clay.

Since some warm-mix asphalt (WMA) concretes were known to show poorer rut resistance than the hot-mix asphalt (HMA) concretes, many studies were performed in efforts of improving its performance at high temperature. The reason is assumed to be due to the moisture remaining in aggregates dried at lower temperature. Therefore, not only the rut resistance, the crack resistance of WMA concrete was also in question. In this study, fatigue life of WMA concrete was evaluated in comparison with HMA using 3-point bending (3PB) beam test. The asphalt mixtures were prepared based on Korean mix-design guide using a 13 mm dense-graded aggregate and 6 binders; two HMA binders and four WMA binders. By 3PB fatigue test, normal (unmodified) and polymer-modified WMA concretes were evaluated in comparison with normal and polymer-modified HMA concretes at a low temperature (-5℃). The results showed that most of WMA concretes showed longer fatigue lives than HMA concretes, even though the same PG binders were used for HMA and WMA. This result indicates that the WMA concretes have stronger resistance against fatigue cracking than HMA at the low temperature, and this result is in contrast to the high-temperature performance test.

Silver salt complex membranes with glassy poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) unexpectedly showed higher propylene permeance than those with rubbery poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) where as neat PMMA is much less permeable to propylene than that of neat PBMA. Such unusual facilitated olefin transport has been systematically investigated by changing the side chain length of polymethacrylates (PMAs) from methyl, ethyl to butyl. The ab initio calculation showed almost the same electron densities of the carbonyl oxygens in the three PMAs, expecting very similar intensity of the interaction between carbonyl oxygen and silver ion. However, the interaction intensity decreases with the length of the alkyl side chain: PMMA > PEMA > PBMA according to wide angle X-ray scattering and FT-Raman spectroscopy. The difference in the interaction intensity may arise from the difference in the hydrophilicity of the three PMAs, as confirmed by the contact angle of water, which determines the concentrations of the ionic constituents of silver salts: free ion, contact ion pair and higher order ionic aggregate. However, propylene solubilities and facilitated propylene transport vary with the side chain length significantly even at the same concentration of the free ion, the most active olefin carrier, suggesting possible difference in the prohibition of the molecular access of propylene to silver ion by the side chains: the steric hindrance. Therefore, it may be concluded that both the hydrophilicity and the steric hindrance associated with the side chain length in the three PMAs are of pivotal importance in determining facilitated olefin transport through polymer/silver salt complex membranes.
Implantable biodegradable wafers were prepared with pamidronate -loaded poly (L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA, 75 : 25 mole ratio by lactide to glycolide, molecular weight : 20000 and 90000 g/mole) by direct compression method for the sustained release of pamidronate to investigate the possibility for the treatment of bone resorption. Pamidronate-loaded PLGA powders were prepared by means of physical mixing and spray drying with the control of formulation factors and characterized by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer. The pamidronate-loaded PLGA powders fabricated into wafers by direct compression under the constant pressure and time at room temperature. These wafers were also observed for their structural characteristic, release pattern, and degradation pattern. The release rate of pamidronate increased with increasing their initial loading ratio as well as increasing wafer thickness. The molecular weight of PLGA affects the release pattern : the higher molecular weight of PLGA, the faster release rate. It can be explained that the higher viscosity of high molecular PLGA solution at same concentration tends to aggregate PLGA and pamidronate resulting in unstable pharmaceutical dosage form. This system had advantages in terms of simplicity in design and obviousness of drug release rate and nay be useful as an implantable dosage form for the treatment of aural cholesteatoma.
