This study was conducted to develop a new drying technology in order to quickly and massively dry bamboo tubes without crack and check. The bamboo tubes with the diameter of 45 mm - 68 mm had been impregnated in the solution of PEG-1000, and then were dried under room temperature and high temperature, respectively. The cracks occurred on all control specimens while no cracks were found on PEG treated specimens during drying at room temperature due to effect of PEG restraining the circumferential shrinkage of bamboo tube. But the drying period of this method was too long (200 days) compared to 10 hours of kiln drying. During fast high temperature drying, cracks occurred on all control specimens, but no cracks were found on PEG treated specimens, which could be accounted for more solidified PEG due to higher drying temperature and faster drying rate, and the tension set formed on the surface of bamboo tube in the early stage of drying owning to high drying temperature and low relative humidity. Thus, it is advised that PEG treated bamboo tube should be fast dried at high temperature in order to not only prevent crack or check in short drying period but also increase the dimensional stability of the products made of bamboo tubes.
Polyurethane/polyethylene glycol(PU/PEG) hybrid scaffolds with various concentrations of PEG (0 to 50wt%) were prepared by electrospinning to evaluate the mechanical properties and the biocompatibility of the PU/PEG blend scaffolds. The 12wt% PU/PEG polymers were studied due to the absence of beads. The ultimate tensile strength of 12wt% PU was $8.2{\pm}0.5MPa$. The strength increased to $9.2{\pm}0.7MPa$ when 10% PEG was added to PU. However, the dry and the wet strength of PU/PEG scaffolds began to decrease dramatically when the PEG content was more than 10wt%. No cytotoxicity was observed for all the PU/PEG scaffolds investigated, indicating that the PU/PEG hybrid scaffolds are clinically safe and effective to small-diameter vascular grafts. In addition, the L-929 cells attached and proliferated well on the PU/PEG hybrid scaffolds.
The effects of different dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) isomers, when used as matrix materials in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), were investigated in analyses of polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymers. PEG polymers ranging from 400 to 8,000 Da were prepared in different DHB isomer matrices using solvent-based and solvent-free methods. PEG samples were detected only in matrices of 2,3-DHB, 2,5-DHB, and 2,6-DHB while the most intense peaks were observed using 2,6-DHB in both solvent-free and solvent-based preparations.

The fractionation of serine protease inhibitor (SPI) from fish roe extracts was carried out using polyethylene glycol-4000 (PEG4000) precipitation. The protease inhibitory activity of extracts and PEG fractions from Alaska pollock (AP), bastard halibut (BH), skipjack tuna (ST), and yellowfin tuna (YT) roes were determined against target proteases. All of the roe extracts showed inhibitory activity toward bromelain (BR), chymotrypsin (CH), trypsin (TR), papain-EDTA (PED), and alcalase (AL) as target proteases. PEG fractions, which have positive inhibitory activity and high recovery (%), were the PEG1 fraction (0-5 %, w/v) against cysteine proteases (BR and PA) and the PEG4 fraction (20-40 %, w/v) against serine proteases (CH and TR). The strongest specific inhibitory activity toward CH and TR of PEG4 fractions was AP (9278 and 1170 U/mg) followed by ST (6687 and 2064 U/mg), YT (3951 and 1536 U/mg), and BH (538 and 98 U/mg). The inhibitory activity of serine protease in extracts and PEG fractions from fish roe was stronger than that of cysteine protease toward common casein substrate. Therefore, SPI is mainly distributed in fish roe and PEG fractionation effectively isolated the SPI from fish roes.
Two-component ceramic (alumina-zirconia) composites were fabricated by a soft-solution process in which polyethylene glycol (PEG) was used as a polymeric carrier. Metal salts and PEG were dissolved in ethyl alcohol without any precipitation in 1:1 volume ratio of alumina and zirconia. In the non-aqueous system, the flammable solvent made explosive, exothermic reaction during drying process. The reaction resulted in formation of volume expanded, porous precursor powders by a vigorous decomposition of organic components in the precursor sol. The PEG content affected the grain size of sintered composites as well as the morphology of precursor powders. The difference of microstructure in sintered composite was attribute to the solubility and homogeneity of metal cations in precursor sol. At the optimum amount of the PEG polymer, the metal ions were dispersed effectively in solution and a homogeneous polymeric network was formed. It made less agglomerated particles in the precursor sol and affected on uniform grain size in sintered composite.
The physical properties and drug release behaviours of polyethylene glycol grafted poly ${\gamma}$- benzyl L-glutamate (PEG- g- PBLG), polyethylene glycol crosslinked poly ${\gamma}$-benzyl L- glutamate(PEG-c-PBLG), and PBLG homopolymer are compared. PBLG containing PEG segements showed higher wettability and larger enlongation than PBLG homoplymer, but lower elastic modulus. The release rate of rhodamine is strongly influenced by the wettability of the polymer. Rhodamine is more rapidly released from PEG-c-PBLG membrane having a larger water contact angle than from other polymer having a lower water contact angle. The surfaces of PBLG derivative membranes are modified by substitution reaction using hydroxyalkylamine. The resulting polymer membranes showed hider wettability and swelling ratio than virgin membranes.
The removal properties of Polyethylene glycols (PEGs) known as the important group of synthetic polymers of ethylene oxide were examined by the bio-reactor equipped with a mesh filter module. PEG-1000 and PEG-2000 were fairly removed on the basis of TOC, which were 75.1% and 51.6%, respectively. In the case of PEG-20000, the removal efficiency of TOC was less than 15.2% and the favorable acclimation of microbes was not obtained. It was suggested that this system could effectively maintain microbes for the biodegradation of low molecular weight of PEG and TOC removal was significantly influenced by PEG molecular weight.
