Polybutadiene(PB) was epoxidized to various extents with m-chloroperbenzoic acid (MCPBA) in homogeneous solution. The thermal properties of the epoxidized PBs were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As a result of epoxidation the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PB increased by approximately $0.8^{\circ}$ for each 1 mol% of epoxidation. The thermal decomposition of the epoxidised PBs occurred in two-step process, while that of PB exhibited apparent one-step degradation process.
Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) analysis of nonpolar polymeric materials is affected by the sample preparation as well as the matrix and cationizing agent. This study examined the influence of silver salt types on the MALDI analysis of polybutadiene (PB). Silver trifluoroacetate (AgTFA), silver benzoate (AgBz), silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$), and silver p-toluenesulfonate (AgTS) were used as the silver salts to compare the MALDI mass spectra of PB. The mixture solution of PB and 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB), as a matrix dissolved in THF, was spotted on the sample plate and dried. A droplet of the aqueous silver salt solution was placed onto the mixture. The mass spectrum with AgBz showed the clear $[M+Ag]^+$ ion distribution of PB while the mass spectrum with AgTFA did not show $[M+Ag]^+$ ions but only silver cluster ions. The mass spectra with $AgNO_3$ and AgTS did not show a clear $[M+Ag]^+$ ion distribution. The difference in the formation of $[M+Ag]^+$ ions of PB depending on the silver salts was attributed to the silver cation transfer reaction between the silver salt and the matrix (DHB). The mass spectrum showed a clear $[M+Ag]^+$ ion distribution of PB when the conjugate acid of the silver salt was less acidic than the matrix.
In this study, we investigate the thermal and mechanical properties of composites comprising ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) and polybutadiene (PB) obtained using carbon black (CB) as a reinforcing and compatibilizing filler. Owing to the significance of elastomeric materials in various industrial applications, blending of EPDM and PB has emerged as a strategic method to optimize the material properties for specific applications. This study offers insights into the blend composition, its microstructure, and the resulting macroscopic behaviors, focusing on the synergetic effects of composite materials. Furthermore, this study delves into curing and rheological behaviors, crosslink densities, and mechanical, thermal, and elastic properties of the elastomeric composites. Through systematic exploration, we believe that this study will be beneficial to material scientists and engineers working on developing advanced elastomeric composites.
Epoxidized polybutadiene (EPB) was prepared by polybutadiene (PB) with m-chloroperbenzoic acid (MCPBA) in homogeneous solution. EPB was blended with poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) up to 30 wt% by solution-precipitation procedure. The thermal decomposition of PHB/EPB blends was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The thermograms of PHB/EPB blends contained a two-step degradation process, while that of pure PHB sample exhibited only one-step degradation process. This degradation behavior of PHB/EPB blends, which have a higher thermal stability as measured by maximum decomposition temperature and residual weight, is probably due to crosslinking reactions of the epoxide groups in the EPB component with the carboxyl chain ends of PHB fragments during the degradation process, and the occurrence of such reactions can be assigned to the exothermic peaks in their DTA thermograms.
Polybutadiene latex grafted (g-PB) in g-PB/SAN blends, i.e., acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer (ABS) were partially replaced by acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer (NBR) with various acrylonitrile (AN) contents. Changes in morphology, physical and rheological properties were examined. The dispersed size of NBR was decreased as the miscibility with matrix SAM, was increased by increasing AN content in NBR upto 50 wt%. Impact strength was enhanced about two-fold due to the NBR dispersed with a slight larger size than the original g-PB. Gloss was effectively reduced as the particle size of NBR was increased. Tensile yield strength was decreased, and elongation at break or yield behavior at low shear rate were increased as g-PB was partially replaced by NBR having AN content less that 40 wt%.
