Phenol removal by tailor-made polyamide-fly ash composite membrane: Modeling and optimization

  • A novel composite membrane was synthesized using crosslinked polyamide and fly ash ceramic substrate for phenol removal. Glutaraldehyde was used as crosslinker. Characterization shows that synthesized membrane possesses good permeability ($0.184l.m^{-2}.h^{-1}.kPa^{-1}$), MWCO (1.7 kDa), average pore size (1.08 nm) and good chemical stability. RSM was adopted for phenol removal studies. Box-Behnken-Design using quadratic model was chosen for three operating parameters (feed phenol concentration, pH and applied pressure) against two responses (phenol removal, flux). ANOVA shows that model is statistically valid with high coefficient of determination ($R^2$)value for flux (0.9897) and phenol removal (0.9302). The optimum conditions are obtained as pH 2, $46mg.l^{-1}$ (feed phenol concentration) and 483 kPa (applied pressure) with 92.3% phenol removal and $9.2l.m^{-2}.h^{-1}$ flux. Data validation with deviation of 4% confirms the suitability of model. Obtained results reveal that prepared composite membrane can efficiently separate phenol from aqueous solution.

Wear Characteristics and Thermal Stability of PA66/silane treated MoS2 Composites

  • We functionalized a wear-resistant carbon-based MoS2 filler to solve its limited wear condition problem. The filler exhibits excellent lubricative properties. The surface modification of MoS2 was carried out using a (3-glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) silane coupling agent to improve the low compatibility and dispersibility of the filler that generally degrade the performance of composites. A silane coupling agent was employed for the functionalization of MoS2, and its effect on the wear resistance of MoS2/Polyamide-6,6 was investigated. The silanization of MoS2 was identified by contact angle analysis and Fourier-transform infrared, energy dispersive X-ray, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. The wear resistance of the composite was found to be improved significantly by the surface functionalization of MoS2.

Measurement of Degree of Hydrolysis of a PA66/GF Composite using a py-GC/MS analysis

  • The effect on the hydrolysis resistance properties by the addition of maleic anhydride grafted EMDM (MA-g-EPDM) and PP (MA-g-PP) to a PA66/GF composite was investigated with respect to the mechanical properties, thermal properties, and morphology. The degree of hydrolysis of the PA66/GF composite was measured using py-GC/MS analysis. When compared to the PA66/GFcomposite in MEG/water solution, the composites where MA-g-EPDM and MA-g-PP were added to PA66/GF showed a higher degree of hydrolysis resistance, impact strength, and thermal properties, whereas their tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength and flexural modulus decreased. As immersion time in the solution increases, the rate of tensile strength drop of the MA-g-PP added composite appeared lower than that of the PA66/MA-g-EPDM/GF and PA66/GF composites. The py-GC/MS analysis confirmed the formation of PA66 hydrolysis reaction by products such as carboxylic acid and alkylamine with increasing immersion time.

  • 기존의 ethylene-vinyl acetate 핫멜트 접착제는 시간에 따른 크리프 특성과 내열성 등의 한계로 사용에 제한이 있으므로 물성의 향상을 위해 폴리아미드계 수지를 이용한 새로운 핫멜트 접착제 개발에 관하여 연구하였다. 폴리아미드 단일중합체의 경우 융점과 용융점도가 매우 높기 때문에 대신 나일론6, 나일론66, 나일론12로 이루어진 삼원공중합체 혹은 블렌딩 수지를 사용하므로써 분자쇄의 규칙성 파괴로 인해 용융점도와 용융점을 강하시킬 수 있었다. 이로써 선택된 수지가 핫멜트 접착제의 베이스 수지로 적절함을 알 수 있었다. 또한 베이스 수지에 테르펜 수지, butyl benzyl phthalate, 파라핀왁스 등을 첨가하여 접착제를 구성함에 따라 유변학적 거동도 쉽게 조절될 수 있었다. 용융점도와 접착제 자체의 인장물성 결과에 따르면 사용된 CM831과 843형 폴리아미드 수지를 약 75/25~50/50의 무게비로 블렌딩함이 최적의 접착력을 나타내리라 평가되었다. 또한 steel간의 접착력 평가 결과 steel 표면의 거칠음 정도가 접착력에 직접 영향을 미치는 결과를 얻었다.

Nanofiltration of Dyeing Wastewater Using Polyamide Ro-Membranes after the Pretreatment with Chemical Coagulants

  • Nanofiltration (NF) of a dyeing wastewater was carried out using polyamide NF-membranes. Before applying the wastewater to the membrane process, it was pretreated with various chemical coagulants such as alum, ferric chloride and HOC-100A. In order to see the effect of the pretreatment of the wastewater using chemical coagulants on the membrane separation process, the optimum conditions for the coagulation and sedimentation process using the chemical coagulants were sought. By the pretreatment, despite the different coagulants used, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and UV-absorbance of the wastewater were lowered by more than $70\%$. The pretreated wastewater was then applied to the membrane process. The effect of the coagulants used for the pretreatment on the membrane fouling was studied. From this study, it was found that the HOC-100A was the best out of the coagulants used far the removal of the materials that could cause membrane fouling.

Highly Dispersed CuO Nanoparticles on SBA-16 Type Mesoporous Silica with Cyclam SBA-16 as a Precursor

  • MALDI-TOF-MS technique was applied to obtain structural and compositional information of synthetic polyamides, Nylon6 and Nylon66. Mass spectra of both the original and the hydrolyzed polyamide samples were analyzed using the self calibration method as well as the internal calibration method with the standard materials of known masses. The MALDI-TOF mass spectra of Nylon6 samples showed the presence of protonated, sodiated, and potassiated ions that were assigned to cyclic and NH2/COOH terminated linear oligomers. From the MALDI-TOF mass spectra of Nylon66 samples, the potassiated linear oligomers with three different end groups are identified as well as the cyclic oligomers, i.e., NH2/COOH terminated oligomers, NH2/NH2 terminated oligomers, and COOH/COOH terminated oligomers. Full characterization of the molecular species and end groups present in the polyamide samples has been achieved, and also the changes in mass spectral patterns after the hydrolysis of the samples are presented.

경량 베어링 수명 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Life Characteristics of Lightweight Bearings)

  • In the industry, the use of lightweight bearings is increasing to minimize motor power loss, and in particular, the application of next-generation systems such as robots and drones is increasing. Bearing manufacturers are producing lightweight bearings by changing the bearing material, but related researches is insufficient. In this paper, life test and structural analysis were performed for lightweight bearings, and shape parameters and scale parameters were derived based on the life test results. It was confirmed that the shape parameter was 2.52 and the scale parameter was 164 hours. As a result of calculating the dynamic load rating based on the B10 life, it was confirmed that the dynamic load rating of the lightweight bearing was 7% compared to the formula suggested by ISO 281. The reason is that the material of the retainer, which is a major failure part, is a polyamide 66 series that reacts sensitively to heat, so It is judged to show a lot of difference from the ISO 281 calculation formula.

폴리아미드 66 복합소재의 열 열화 특성: 수명 예측과 활성화 에너지의 상관관계 (Characterization of Thermal Degradation of Polymide 66 Composite: Relationship between Lifetime Prediction and Activation Energy)

  • 광학현미경분석, 주사전자현미경분석 및 적외선분광분석을 이용하여, 열화시간 경과에 따른 유리섬유가 보강된 폴리아미드 66 복합소재의 열 열화 특성을 조사하였다. 열화시간이 증가함에 따라, 인장강도는 열화 초기 약간의 증가 후 점진적으로 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 이러한 결과는 열 열화가 진행됨에 따라 결정화도의 증가, 가교밀도의 증가, 사슬 전단 및 사슬 운동성의 감소 등에 기인한 것으로 판단된다. 적외선분광분석을 통하여, 폴리아미드 66 복합소재 표면상에 열화에 기인한 케톤 피크와 규소 피크의 증가를 관찰하엿다. 또한 세 가지 승온속에서 측정된 열중량분석 결과를 이용하여 폴리아미드 66 복합소재으 열 분해 반응동역학을 분석하였다. 통계학적 기법, UL 746B, Ozawa 및 Kissinger 등 여러 방법을 통해 계산된, 폴리아미드 66 복합소재의 활성화 에너지와 수명 예측간의 상관관계를 조사하였다. 열중량분석으로부터 계산된 활성화 에너지는 가속시험으로 구한 값보다 상대적으로 큰 값을 나타내며, 이는 폴리아미드 66 소재으 수명을 과대 평가하는 결과를 초래하였다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 사용 온도에서의 활성화 에너지를 외삽하여 계산 가능한 지수 패턴의 표준곡선을 개발하였다.

  • Nylon was the first commercialized synthetic fiber. It is a polyamide, derived from a diamine and dicarboxylic acid. The nylon fiber has outstanding durability and excellent physical properties such as stiffness, wear and abrasion resistance, friction coefficient and chemical resistance. Due to these properties of nylon 66, nano-sized fibers are produced by electrospinning method in this study. During the past years the nylon 66 fibers have been prepared by conventional melt spining. Overview of Hydrolysis : A Review Part II- Hydrolysis Application

  • Part 1 provides a theoretical introduction of the hydrolysis mechanism, while Part 2 introduces other types of reaction mechanisms after hydrolysis in elastomer and PA66 composites. We reviewed the condensation reaction, which occurs after hydrolysis in bi-functional alkoxy silane (TESPD & TESPT), and investigated its effects on the mechanical properties of the composites. We also reviewed activators such as zinc soap, which enhances the mechanical properties of silica-silane-filled elastomer composites. The interaction parameter of silica-silane-filled elastomer composites [αC (alpha C)] were also discussed. The effects of hydrolysis on the mechanical property changes in plastic composites were compared and reviewed.
