Melt blends of polyamide 6 (PA 6) with polyester elastomer (PEL) were prepared in a corotating twin screw extruder using two types of coupling agent(CA), viz. diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and 1,4-phenylene bis(2-oxazoline) (PBO). Notched impact strength of PA 6 as well as PA 6/PEL blends increased with the addition of coupling agent, especially with DGEBA and the maximum impact toughening of the blend was obtained with 0.6%(by mol) DGEBA, where a minimum domain size was observed from SEM. Melt viscosities of the untreated blends were higher than those of base resins at low frequencies. Viscosities of base resins as well as blends increased with the addition of CA, and the effect was much more pronounced with DGEBA, especially for PA 6 and PA 6-rich blends.
A series of polycarbonate(PC)/polyamide 6(PA6) blends were prepared by three different blending methods to investigate their compatibility. From the DSC results, all of these blends have two Tg's in their own Tg regions, and there was no significant depression of the melting point and the crystallization temperature of PA6. With respect to the microstructure of the blends by SEM, the phase separation occurred at very low blend compositions, PC/PA6=95/5 and 5/95, already. In addition, a method is proposed to determine the Flory-Huggins polymer-polymer interaction parameter(${\chi}_{12}$) in polymer blend systems by using the experimentally determined Tg's. The values of ${\chi}_{12}$ obtained were 0.0381, 0.0411, 0.0418, for solution casting, solution precipitation, and extrusion blending methods, respectively. These values were higher than the critical value of ${\chi}_{12}$,($({\chi}_{12})_c$, 0.0271). Therefore it was concluded that the PC/PA6 blend system have little compatibility.
Hot melt adhesive based on the polyamide resin was studied to improve the conventional hot melt adhesives such as ethylene-vinyl acetate which have inherent problems against creep and heat resistance. It was found that the terpolymer of nylons6, nylon66, and nylon12 or the nylon blend instead of nylon homopolymer was suitable base resin for hot melt adhesives, since the disruption of regularity in the polymer chains reduced the crystallinity, resulting in lower melting point and melt viscosity. Also, the rheological properties of the polyamide based hot melt adhesive could be controlled by the incorporation of terpene resin, butyl benzyl phthalate, and paraffin wax. The results of melt viscosities and tensile properties of adhesive itself indicated that the optimum adhesion properties could be obtained through the blending of CM831/843P resins with weight ratio 75/25~50/50. The adhesion between steel and steel was tested by using lap shear geometry. It was found that the surface roughness of steel affected the adhesion strength.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to compare the color stability, water sorption and cytotoxicity of thermoplastic acrylic resin for the non-metal clasp dentures to those of thermoplastic polyamide and conventional heat-polymerized denture base resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three types of denture base resin, which are conventional heat-polymerized acrylic resin (Paladent 20), thermoplastic polyamide resin (Bio Tone), thermoplastic acrylic resin (Acrytone) were used as materials for this study. One hundred five specimens were fabricated. For the color stability test, specimens were immersed in the coffee and green tee for 1 and 8 weeks. Color change was measured by spectrometer. Water sorption was tested after 1 and 8 weeks immersion in the water. For the test of cytotoxicity, cell viability assay was measured and cell attachment was analyzed by FE-SEM. RESULTS. All types of denture base resin showed color changes after 1 and 8 weeks immersion. However, there was no significant difference between denture base resins. All specimens showed significant color changes in the coffee than green tee. In water sorption test, thermoplastic acrylic resin showed lower values than conventional heat-polymerized acrylic resin and thermoplastic polyamide resin. Three types of denture base showed low cytotoxicity in cell viability assay. Thermoplastic acrylic resin showed the similar cell attachment but more stable attachment than conventional heat-polymerized acrylic resin. CONCLUSION. Thermoplastic acrylic resin for the non-metal clasp denture showed acceptable color stability, water sorption and cytotoxicity. To verify the long stability in the mouth, additional in vitro studies are needed.
For the treatment of the dye wastewater, a polyamide nano-composite membrane and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes were prepared using interfacial polymerization technique, in which piperazine, meta-phenylene diamine, and trimesoyl chloride were used as monomers, Their permselective properties were characterized with aqueous solutions of PEG 600, $Na_2SO_4$, and NaCl, and their performance was compared with that of Osmonics Co, They were found to be a typical nano-composite membrane and a low pressure RO membrane. Using them, a real dye wastewater supplied from the Kyungin Corporation, one of the domestic dye producer, was treated, studying the separation performances of the membranes, Also, during the wastewater treatment, cleaning in place (CIP) of the membranes was carried out regularly to recover the flux of the membranes. Three different chemical cleaners were employed for the CIP process and their performance were compared in this study.

The warmth retentivity of natural and syntheic waddings as bedding stuff, and further, the machanism of heat transmission through conduction, radiation and convection were analysed. The materials used were cotton, silk, and wool as natural waddings, and polyamide, polyester, regular acrylic, conjugate acrylic, regular polyprepylene and conjugate polypropylene as synthetic waddings. The results of this study are as follow: 1. The warmth retentivity is highest in silk. Following silk in descending order is cotton, conjugate acrylic, polyester, regular acrylic, wool, polyamide, conjugate polypropylene and regular polypropylene. There is not any significant relationship between warmth retentivity and the conductivity of the fibers. 2. Transmission by radiation through the fiber waddings is highest in conjugate polypropylene. Following conjugate polypropylene in descending order is regular polypropylene. polyester. polyamide, conjugate acrylic, regular acrylic, wool, cotton, and silk. This is seen to be in nearly reversed order to the abovementioned order of warmth retentivity. In this respect, warmth retentivity with loose fibreous material as in the case of bedding stuff is primarily affected by the interceptive function of the fibers in heat radiation. 3. Warmth retentivity becomes lower with increasing air content of the waddings. This is because heat transmission by radiation incrases as air content increases. The air content increase is due to the fact that the air is unable to intercept heat radiation. In addition, heat transmission accelates in proportion to the increase in convection as the air gap enlarges.
It has been reported that plasma treatments are used to modify surface properties of polymers such as adhesivity hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity. Using plasma treatment, interfacial pro-perty can be introduced to a polymer surface without affecting the desired bulk properties of a material. In this study, commercial polyamide66 (PA66) /polyphenylene (PPE) polymer was modified by plasma treatment under a various gas specious for elimination of organic compound and polymer surface property with hvdrophilicity. PA66/PPE polymer with hydrophilicity was treated by RF plasma vacuum system under a various parameter such as gas specious, processing time and partial pressure. Hydrophilicity of PA66/PPE was confirmed by calculation of the surface free energy from contact angle measurement. The highest surface free energy of $50.03 mJ/m^2$ with the lowest contact angle of $14^{\circ}$ was obtained at plasma process power of 100 W, treatment time of 2 min and $Ar/O_2$ gases of 100 and 200 sccm. Moreover the change of organic compounds on the polymer surface was analyzed by fourier transforms infrared spectrometry (FTIR).
Polyamide (PA) oligomers, which are the hard segment of poly(ether-block-amide) (PEBA), presenting thermoplastic and high performance elastomeric properties were prepared by polycondensation between 4-aminobenzoic acid and 12-aminododecanoic acid. Subsequently PEBAs were obtained by addition polymerization of the PA oligomers and various molecular weights of poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG). The structure of the final PEBA was identified by using FTIR and $^1H$ NMR and the thermal properties depending on changes in the structure of hard segment were collected by using DSC and UTM analysis. As the results, the melt temperature ($T_m$), the initial modulus, and the maximum strength of PEBAs increased with an increase in aromatic moiety up to 30% without reducing crystallinity.
The effect of the atmospheric pressure plasma(APP) treatments is experimentally investigated to ascertain the optimum condition to yield the best adhesive properties between a polyamide woven fabric and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber(NBR). For the atmospheric pressure flame plasma(APFP) treatment, the optimum number of treatment at given conditions is 2 times. The thermal deformation of the fabric is more serious with increasing the number of APFP treatment. The adhesive strength of the case with APFP treated fabric is increased about 35% when compare to the case with non-APFP treated one for the interface(bonding agent one or two coatings). When the surface is coated twice with the bonding agent, the adhesive energy with APFP treated fabric is increased about 4 times. It was found that the surface modification of polyamide woven fabric by APFP treatment is a fast, economic and applicable method to improve the adhesive properties between woven fabric and rubber when compared to other APP treatments.
Incorporating nano-materials in thin-film composite (TFC) membranes has been considered to be an approach to achieve higher membrane performance in various water treatment processes. This study investigated the rejection efficiency of three target compounds, i.e., reserpine, norfloxacin and tetracycline hydrochloride, by TFC membranes with different graphene oxide proportions. Graphene oxide (GO) was incorporated into the polyamide active layer of a TFC membrane via an interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction. The TFC membranes were characterized with FTIR, FE-SEM, AFM; in addition, the water contact angle measurements as well as the permeation and separation performance were evaluated. The prepared GO-TFC membranes exhibited a much higher flux ($3.11{\pm}0.04L/m2{\cdot}h{\cdot}bar$) than the pristine TFC membranes ($2.12{\pm}0.05L/m2{\cdot}h{\cdot}bar$) without sacrificing their foulant rejection abilities. At the same time, the GO-modified membrane appeared to be less sensitive to pH changes than the pure TFC membrane. A significant improvement in the anti-fouling property of the membrane was observed, which was ascribed to the favorable change in the membrane's hydrophilicity, surface morphology and surface charge through the addition of an appropriate amount of GO. This study predominantly improved the understanding of the different PA/GO membranes and outlined improved industrial applications of such membranes in the future.
