  • This study examines the ways in which Confucianism developed in connection with other thoughts. Mythology especially had an great impact on the formation of Confucian thoughts. This study focuses on the concept of sage and examines how Confucianism and mythological thoughts influenced on formation and reformation of the concepts. In ancient religion, sages as a hierophantic figure, mediates human beings and gods, delivering the gods' messages to the human and the human's wishes to the gods. The fused role of shaman and ruler began to separate. A new type of leader without political power, but with a religious role with a moral authority is the Confucian concept of sage. A sage in Confucianism is an ideal person like Confucius, Mencius, and Xunzi, an ordinary person can attain with effort. Anyone can become a sage in Confucianism. The early Confucian sage was more like a hyper-human with unaccessible authority in mythology. Later, a sage in Confucianism began to be described as a model figure that any human being can become. The aspect of shamans and diviners (wushi 巫師) did not disappear, but merged into a kingly power and transformed into a sage-king with moral authority. The new images are reflected in Confucian ideology of statehood or its religiosity. This study has explored the ways in which Confucianism and mythological thoughts interacted and influenced to each other through a concept of sage as an ideal personhood.

  • Previous studies "Dong-uibogam(東醫寶鑑)" or "Dong-uisusebowon(東醫壽世保元)", Korean medical text written in the 16th/19th century, have focused mainly on his theories of Daoism and Neo-Confucianism or Post-Confucianism. This Study suggests that the "Dong-uibogam" and "Dong-uisusebowon" were the scholarly products of the Early Modern Neo-Confucians during the Joseon Dynasty period. These Early Modern Neo-Confucians ruled the dynasty rationally, and edited books on medical science, one of which were the "Dong-uibogam" or "Dong-uisusebowon". In these books, religious aspects of Daoism was excluded because these elements were not in agreement with medical science or Neo-Confucianism. The "Dong-uibogam" and "Dong-uisusebowon" were also translated into the Korean vernacular script based on an obligation to govern the people. This was example of Confucian enlightenment which was Early Modernity of "Dong-uibogam(東醫寶鑑)" or "Dong-uisusebowon(東醫壽世保元)" thought.

  • Grievance resolution, gratitude and mutual beneficence are not only an essential dogma of Daesoonjinrihoe but also a major issue which Chinese Confucian scholars have been concerned about. In this context, this study compares the perspectives of grievance resolution, gratitude, mutual beneficence based on basic scriptures of Daesoonjinrihoe and ancient Chinese Confucianism. With nurture and benevolence as core thoughts, the ways of ruling the world in righteousness and proprieties have common characteristics of Daesoonjinrihoe and Confucianism. The Heavenly Way, which is rather an abstract conception, is perceived as a Confucianism ultimate ground. Because Confucianism does what is right for nurture, embracing rationality, the religious aspects are not clearly defined, it is the difference between Daesoonjinrihoe and Chinese Confucianism. In this regard, this study compares similarities and differences between the two cultures to promote mutual understanding.

  • Both the first author and the company of the second author were involved, directly or indirectly, in the design stage of a permanent link between the bottom of the Italian peninsula and the nearby Sicily island. This ambitious project was left in stand-by from 2013 to 2023. The current political revival originates some thoughts on the updated desired performance of suspension bridges, without any immediate reference to that specific crossing. It is simply regarded as a starting point. After an update on recent worldwide realizations, the authors focus their attention on four basic aspects: the span length, the girder scheme, the foundation technology and the bridge runability. Eventually, structural control and monitoring aspects are discussed as potentially innovative options in designing suspension bridges with railway crossing.

  • Painting, as an artistic creation with aesthetic characteristics, is inseparable from "shape". "Modeling" is a subjective way of expressing objects, and "black shape" is not only a way of expression, but also a way of composition. "Black shape" is a way of expressing the overall picture of the creator, and "black shape" extracted from the pattern analysis of black and white gray structure is a powerful means to deeply explore the emotions and thoughts of the painter. How to create the expression of subjective intention in the creation of artificial figure painting and to explore the beauty of picture form and the presentation of formal language in multiple dimensions is always sought by painters. Tang Dynasty political stability, economic and cultural development of unprecedented prosperity, "Toujian Diu" as a representative painting of Tang Dynasty, the figure is plump and realistic, colorful but elegant. • This paper is to analyze how Walt Whitman developed the theme and structure of Leaves of Grass with his ideal of democratic vistas. Whitman established his identity as an inspired poet, having faith in the divinity of man based on transcendental belief. After being awakened to the transcendental truth, he practiced his own common world view--his democratic vistas. Whitman searched for the unity with nature and identified his self with "common man and his nation." The poetry expresses "cosmological and national ideology" dedicated to the creation of an ideal nation united in eternal freedom and peace. By portraying common cosmic and national theme in terms of his individual personality, he brought various paradoxical and controversial ideas into one thing, namely "democracy", fusing diversity into unity. As in the symbol of the grass, there is a unity in variety reflected by democracy in a cosmological and political compound. With the form of free verse, he could express his liberal unrestrained and mystical thoughts of democracy. This new form has been associated with the poet's strong consciousness of the need for modernization in his country. He willingly assumed "the role of prophet and public voice for American democrat" with the rolling catalogues and I-persona which formed a sense of the common man and common things of America. Whitman pioneered a democrat literature with simple and dynamic tone and style. He successively pursued the democratic vistas in his Leaves of Grass.
