Impact of COVID-19 on Entrepreneurship and Consumer Behaviour: A Case Study in Saudi Arabia

  • COVID-19 presented the world with a severe loss of life and impact, which has no geographical bounds or expected time to when its effects will subside. It has affected countries across the globe, disrupting economic levels and businesses in every industry while also altering individuals' everyday lives. The current research aims to examine the impact of coronavirus pandemic on entrepreneur's business activities and their perceptions on the difference in consumer behavior during this time. The findings reveal the pandemic negatively impacted business productivity and profits, forcing many businesses to physically close permanently. Surprisingly, female entrepreneurs do not perceive a change in consumer behavior compared to pre-COVID-19 times. Interestingly, the results indicate there is a negative impact on employees' efficiency to conduct work in which almost no research has conveyed such a finding. For this purpose, a survey was conducted with 445 responses from male and female entrepreneurs in the capital city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, using a simple random sample over the period of four months. Ultimately, this research will help entrepreneurs gain more knowledge and a deeper understanding of this new environment necessary to undertaking certain measures and adaptability in order to sustain their businesses during unprecedented times.

The Impact of Perceived Transparency, Trust and Skepticism towards Banks on the Adoption of IFRS 9 in Malaysia

  • The global financial crisis in 2008 eroded trust towards the banking industry overall. To make such institutions more transparent, the International Accounting Standard Board developed the International Financial Reporting Standard 9 (IFRS 9). After the announcement of IFRS 9, academic research has primarily focused on examining the stability of banks due to early loan-loss recognition guidelines under the new system. There appears to be a lack of understanding of how IFRS 9 has influenced institutional depositors' opinions of bank trustworthiness. Hence the goal of this study is to determine how the adoption of IFRS 9 by banks has impacted perceptions of transparency, trust, and skepticism, from the perspective of large institutional depositors. This research was conducted in the context of Malaysian banks that follow the IFRS 9 guidelines. A framework is proposed using the signaling theory, leading to the development of a set of hypotheses. The hypotheses are tested with data collected from 654 financial analysts working in Malaysian companies that are large institutional depositors. The results indicate that the adoption of IFRS 9 has led to higher levels of perceptions of bank transparency and trust, and lower levels of skepticism towards such banks.

Assessment of Bank Customer's Attitude Toward Financial Technology in Pakistan

  • The financial technology sector is now growing rapidly all over the world, and it has improved the banking system efficiency and customer experience. This research study attempts explicitly to explore the consumer acceptance attitude of FinTech and its products in Pakistan. Technology Acceptance Model was used to assess the entire variable associated with the consumer attitude to adopt new technology. Based on a survey conducted from Pakistan data and by employing the multiple regression analysis, this study proves that the risk involved in FinTech products and services results in less usage of financial technology. The findings of the study also show that the risk should be reduced if banks and other institutes that are involved in financial transactions online must provide security. Moreover, customers are not willing to pay an extra amount for using financial technology. It argues that usefulness helps to change the attitude of banking customers to use financial technology. The attitudes of the customers have a positive relationship with the adoption of financial technology. These results also help guide financial institutions to enhance the adoption of FinTech products. User attitudes must be changed by providing users with more security, less risky applications, and cost-effective products.

The Role of Ethnocentrism and Firms Reputation of a Country of Origin on Consumer Purchase Intention

  • The growth of international trade and the formation of supranational economic and political trading blocks have noticeably widened the presence on the market of products of different national origins. This has stimulated interest in explaining the Country-of-Origin (COO) role in domestic and international markets and its consequences on consumer behaviour. Since the consumer purchasing decisions can be decisive to the success of a company's strategy in domestic and foreign markets, the objective of this study is to present empirical evidence on the extent to which reputation of firms associated to a certain COO are related to consumer purchase intention. Additionally our study considers ethnocentrism as a variable that partially explains the rejection of imports products based on its foreign origin. The empirical application of the proposed model is related to the purchase of Korean automobiles which represents 5.7% of the national market share in Spain. Structural equation modelling was used to analyse the data collected from 202 personal interviews carried out in a large Spanish region. The results show that reputation of firms associated to a certain COO in an important factor to establish business relationships involving consumers and firms from different countries and increase intentions to purchase Korean products. Additionally, ethnocentric consumers prefer to purchase domestic products rather than foreign imports as an attempt to protect national economy however the negative effect of ethnocentrism is weaker than positive effect of firms reputation of a COO.

Financial Development and Economic Growth: Credit Distribution in Southeast Asian Countries

  • Purpose: Research on financial development plays a crucial role in guiding and implementing policies for both financial development and economic growth. This study aims to evaluate the impact of financial development on the economic growth of Southeast Asian countries. Research design, data and methodology: The research utilizes data from 11 Southeast Asian countries from 2015 to 2022. Financial development data is proxied by credit distribution in private sector. Results: Based on the analysis using the FGLS model, it indicates that financial development has a positive impact on the economic growth of Southeast Asian countries. In addition, the study also examines the impact of state investment costs and FDI investment on economic growth. The results also show that foreign direct investment flows still play an important role in Southeast Asian countries (FDI has a positive impact on economic growth). State investment costs also impact economic growth, showing that the development of public investment also brings good development to countries. Conclusions: These results suggest that credit policies for financial development in general, and the development of private credit in particular, play a significant role in these countries. Building a system to promote the activities of private sector economies will help stimulate the economic development of Southeast Asian countries.

과학기술에 대한 일반시민의 지지도와 정치의식: 사회문제 해결형 연구를 중심으로 (The Relationship between Public Support for Scientific Research and Political Orientations: The Case of Research for Social Problem-Solving)

  • 이 논문은 전국적인 설문조사자료를 분석하여 과학연구에 대한 한국인의 지지도가 어떠하며, 어떤 집단이 이러한 지지를 견인하고 있는지를 순수 기초 연구, 산업발전을 목표로 하는 응용연구, 일반시민의 삶의 질 향상을 목표로 하는 사회문제 해결형 연구로 나누어 살펴본다. 분석결과 사회적 정치적 가치 지향에 따라 사회문제 해결형 연구를 포함한 연구 유형별 지지도에 차이가 나타났다. 주관적 정치성향이 진보적일수록 사회문제 해결형 연구를 다른 유형의 연구들에 비해 지지하는 경향을 보인 반면, 보수적일수록 기초연구에 대한 지지도가 높아졌고 신자유주의적 가치지향에 가까울수록 응용연구에 대한 지지도가 높아졌다. 한편 한국사회에서 사회문제 해결형 연구가 지나친 응용연구에 대한 비판으로 대두된 반면, 일반시민들은 이를 응용연구보다 기초연구와 대비되는 것으로 인식하고 있었다. 또한 사회문제 해결형 연구가 전문가주의의 폐해를 극복하기 위해 시민참여를 강조하는 반면, 과학자의 권위와 전문성에 대한 신뢰도 수준이 높을수록 오히려 사회문제 해결형 연구에 대한 지지도가 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 소득 수준이 낮을수록 사회문제 해결형 연구에 대한 지지도가 다른 두 유형의 연구에 대한 지지도보다 높은 것으로 나타났다.

  • In the past, what we call "fashion" was monopolized by only a small highly privileged group of individuals. To-day, we know that fashion field has become progressive democratization of taste not only in clothing, but in all expressions of contemporary living, from automobiles to refrigerators. So, we can find out how wonderful it is that our recent fashionable history was changed so fast. Whatever highly characteristic costume may be in the former, the way people dress was the reflection of their contemporary lives as well as their political status, economics, cultures, arts religions, so that a history of fashion is a history of life. Now, that categorical silhouettes make an exclusion across centuries of past history into the world of aesthetics, particularizes following ; symbolic voluminous toga of Roman authority, the religious but gorgeous Byzantine tunic, extravagant vertical bell-skirt of the Renaissance, the romantic Rococo style, the elegant crinoline and the bustle of the Cul de Paris of the nineteenth. It came true that women was intoxicated ostentations and elegances, since they had on ornamently costume which bear some relationship to the more formal Co-stesy, till the beginning of the twentieth. The Effect of Foreign Direct Investment on Total Factor Productivity in Selected ASEAN+3 Countries: New Evidence Using A Panel ARDL Study

  • This study investigates the effects of FDI and other macroeconomic variables on Total Factor Productivity (TFP) in selected ASEAN+3 countries from 1981 till 2016. Total Factor Productivity (TFP) for each ASEAN+3 country was constructed using the Malmquist productivity index method. Then, a panel ARDL framework (dynamic heterogeneous panel), namely Pooled Mean Group (PMG), Mean Group (MG), and Dynamic Fixed Effect (DFE) are employed in examining the effects of FDI and other controlling variables on TFP. The new findings show that FDI has a significant and positive impact on TFP in the long run and the short run in ASEAN+3 countries. Besides, the results also reveal that in the long run, other variables such as the average number of years of schooling and the ratio of high-skilled to low-skilled labor also have a significant and positive effect on TFP. However, economic openness, government expenditure on R&D, and interaction between countries and FDI have a negative and significant impact on TFP. These findings implied that the recipient countries must ensure their political stability and offer various incentives to attract more investors. Furthermore, the influx of foreign investors, especially large ones and lower costs, should be encouraged by each country as FDI inflows can boost their TFP growth.

중국의 지속적 경제발전에 관한 연구: 한국의 경제발전 경험을 바탕으로 (A Study on the Sustainable Development of China's Economy: based on the Experiences of South Korea's Economic Development)

  • 본 연구는 중국이 지속적 경제발전을 이루기 위한 발전방향이 무엇인가를 경제발전이론 및 한국의 경제발전경험과 비교하여 분석하였다. 경제발전이론에 의하면 한 국가의 경제발전 자본과 노동의 생산성, 그리고 잔차(residual) 등에 의해 결정된다. 따라서 중국이 지속적 경제발전을 위해서는 교육의 확대를 통해 인적자본을 육성하여야 하는데, 교육의 확대는 정치의 민주화를 초래한다. 또한 경제발전의 큰 부분을 차지하는 쏘로우 잔차는 그 사회의 기술수준에 의해 결정되는데, 기술수준의 진보는 민주화의 확산을 불러오게 된다. 한편 중국의 지속적 경제발전 방향을 한국의 경제발전경험에서 찾아보면, 한국은 정부의 시장개입으로 1997년 말 IMF 경제위기에 빠지게 되었는데 정치적 민주화와 함께 자유시장경제의 운영으로 지속적인 경제발전을 이어가고 있다. 한국은 정부가 정부개입에 따른 시장실패를 인정하고 자유시장과 민주화를 통해 문제를 해결한 드문 사례 중 하나이다. 결과적으로 중국이 지속적 경제발전을 이루기 위해서 시장경제의 확대와 민주주의제도의 발전이 이루어져야 할 것이다.

전력가격 평균회귀성을 고려한 연료전지 발전의 실물옵션 분석 (A Real Options Analysis on Fuel Cell Power Plant considering Mean Reverting Process of Electricity Price)

  • 분산전원으로서의 장점을 지닌 연료전지는 높은 투자비용과 전력가격의 불확실성에 영향을 받는다. 본 논문에서는 연료전지 투자의 비가역성과 전력가격의 불확실성을 고려한 실물 옵션 모형을 제시하도록 한다. 대부분의 실물옵션 모형은 분석의 편의상 기하학적 브라운 과정을 가정하지만, 본 연구에서는 평균회귀적인 전력가격의 특성을 반영한 경제성 평가모형을 개발하되 투자옵션 가치의 닫힌 해 또한 제시하도록 한다. 20MW급 연료전지 발전을 위한 데이터와 국내 RPS 상황을 고려한 실증분석 결과, 가격 불확실성을 고려하지 않은 경우 연료전지 발전의 투자 경제성은 확보되지만, 가격 불확실성이 존재할 경우 경제성이 저감되는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 연료전지 발전시설의 도입 및 활성화를 위해서 수입과 비용을 포함하는 종합적인 수익구조 개선 외에도 정책적 지원이 추가적으로 필요함을 시사한다.
