  • The composite structures of steel and reinforced concrete, which have been widely used in large-scale concrete structures, werestudied to investigate the cause of unexpected cracks and to verify the composite actions between the two materials. Vertical stiffeners between flanges, studs and dowel bars, stirrups, and concrete strength were chosen as experimental variables in afour-point loading test. The results showed that the vertical stiffener prevented not only the local web buckling, but also bond failures between steel and concrete. It increased the flexural resistance (fracture loads) due to the composite action of two materials, compared withthose of any experimental variable. However, the composite behavior of steel reinforced concrete beam was not affected seriously by additional studs, dowel bars, stirrups, and concrete strength.

  • Let E be a uniformly convex Banach space with a uniformly Gateaux differentiable norm, C be a nonempty closed convex subset of E and f : $C{\rightarrow}C$ be a fixed bounded continuous strong pseudocontraction with the coefficient ${\alpha}{\in}(0,1)$. Let $\{{\lambda}_t\}_{0<t<1}$ be a net of positive real numbers such that ${\lim}_{t{\rightarrow}0}{\lambda}_t={\infty}$ and S = {$T(s)$ : $0{\leq}s$ < ${\infty}$} be a nonexpansive semigroup on C such that $F(S){\neq}{\emptyset}$, where F(S) denotes the set of fixed points of the semigroup. Then sequence {$x_t$} defined by $x_t=tf(x_t)+(1-t)\frac{1}{{\lambda}_t}{\int_{0}}^{{\lambda}_t}T(s)x{_t}ds$ converges strongly as $t{\rightarrow}0$ to $\bar{x}{\in}F(S)$, which solves the following variational inequality ${\langle}(f-I)\bar{x},\;p-\bar{x}{\rangle}{\leq}0$ for all $p{\in}F(S)$.

  • The method of utilizing sensitivity linkages for the analysis of mechanical errors are proposed. As sources of the mechanical error, tolerances in the link length and clearances in thejoints are considered. It is demonstrated that the problem of calculating mechanical errors of a 4-bar mechanism can be transformed into a problem of conventeional velocity analysis of a sensitivity linkage. As a result of the present study, it is found and proved that the mechanical error of the output angle in the 4-Bar mechaism is represented as a simple harmonic function with respect to the relative position of the pin on the clearance circle. Also the vector representing the mechanical error of a coupler point makes, in general, an ellipse as the relative angle varies on the clearance circle. With these results we can better identify the characteristic of the mechanical errors in linkages.

  • Since high-rise building construction sites are usually located in crowded city areas, sufficient spaces for the inventories of key materials are rarely available. This spatial constraints have been one of the critical challenge that may cause productivity loss and increasing costs of the high-rise building construction projects. The proper material inventory management is certaing a key to the success of high-rise building construction projects as it handles difficulty of securing material stock yards, changes in demands, uncertain delivery time through integrating the construction schedules and actively responding to the key materials attributes. In this light, this research analyzes the latest inventory model, (Q,r) model, in accordance with the high rise building characteristics. This research suggests an optimal inventory management of re-bar considering various demands and lead times. The case study is also presented with regard to the re-bar inventory management.

  • Recrystallization technique was applied to analyze plastic strain at the notch tip of coarse grain HAZ in mild steel (SB 41) and high strength steel (SA 588). The notch tip of specimen was deformed by three point bending. Accumulated displacement (Crack Opening Displacement ${delta}t$) by the monotonic and cyclic loading under room temperature and hot strain embrittlement temperature ($250^{\circ}C$) was 0~1.0mm. Recrystallization heat treatment conditions were $650^{circ}C{ imes}3hr$ for SB 41 and $700^{circ}C{ imes}3hr$ for SA 588. The experimental results obtained were as follows ; 1) Distribution of the effective plastic strain at plastic zone was appeared by the function of crack opening displacement, and plastic zone or the effective plastic strain increased with crack opening displacement. 2) Plastic strain at notch tip of HAZ due to accumulated hot strain calculated as follows. .epsilon. over bar $_{p}$ = .epsilon. over bar $_{cr}$ (x/ $R_{x}$ ) $^{m}$ (m=0.25) 3) Work hardending ratio of notch tip for hot strain was linearly increased with .epsilon. over bar $_{max}$ and dependent upon the material types.s.

  • In this paper, a novel 5-axis hybrid-kinematic machine tool is introduced and the research results on accuracy improvement of the prototype machine tool are presented. The 5-axis hybrid machine tool is made up of a 3-DOF parallel manipulator and a 2-DOF serial one connected in series. The machine tool maintains high ratio of stiffness to mass due to the parallel structure and high orientation capability due to the serial-type wrist. In order to acquire high accuracy, the methodology of measuring the output shafts by additional sensors instead of using encoder outputs at the motor shafts is proposed. In the kinematic view point, the hybrid manipulator reduces to a serial one, if the passive joints in the U-P serial chain at the center of the parallel manipulator are directly measured by additional sensors. Using the method of successive screw displacements, the kinematic error model is derived. Since a ball-bar is less expensive than a full position measurement device and sufficiently accurate for calibration, the kinematic calibration method of using a ball-bar is presented. The effectiveness of the calibration method has been verified through the simulations. Finally, the calibration experiment shows that the position accuracy of the prototype machine tool has been improved from 153 to $86{\mu}m$.

  • The aim of this study is to characterize a thixoextruded 7075 Al wrought alloy bar in terms of its isotropic behavior through the optical microscope, mechanical test and electron back scattered diffraction. It is also discussed of the extrudability improvement for 7075 Al wrought alloy by thixoextrusion, with emphasis on controlling thixoextrusion parameters. Hot extrusion shows that the maximum extrusion pressure depends on their characteristics in terms of flow stress and hot workability. In the contrary, thixoextrusion demonstrates that the maximum extrusion pressure is almost uniform regardless of the experimental parameters, such as initial ram speed, die bearing length and thixoextrusion temperature. The hot extruded microstructures become elongated to extrusion direction, while the thixoextruded microstructures are isotropic and homogeneously distributed due to the existence of liquid phase between solid grains during the process. The grain refinement due to dynamic recrystallization during thixoextrusion has been also occurred. Subsequent recrystallization would lead to the strengthening of mechanical properties, as observed in the study. The important point is that the values of tensile, yield strength and elongation of the thixoextruded bar without plastic deformation are similar to those of the hot extruded bar with severe plastic deformation.

  • The observed distribution of a blending-corrected sample of Einstein ring crossing times, $t_E$, for microlensing events toward the galactic bulge/bar are analyzed. An inspection of the distribution of crossing times suggests that it may be bimodal, indicating that two populations of lenses could be responsible for observed microlensing events. Given the possibility that microlensing in this direction can be due to the two most common classes of stars, main-sequence and white dwarf, we analyze and show via Monte Carlo simulations that the observed bimodality of $t_E$ can be derived from their accepted mass functions, and the density distributions of both stellar populations in the galactic disk and bulge/bar, with a transverse velocity distribution that is consistent with the density distribution. Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) one sample tests shows that a white dwarf population of about 25% of all stars in the galaxy agrees well with the observed bimodality with a KS significance level greater than 97%. This is an expanded and updated version of a previous investigation (Wickramasinghe, Neusima, & Struble, in Mao 2008). • This paper analyzes the magnetic property according to the machined shape of steel material with non-oriented silicon steel (50PN470/50A470), that is most commonly used in the design of electrical equipment. Toward this end, specimens were produced and divided into Bar-Specimen (Epstein Frame Tester) and Ring-Specimen (Toroidal Ring Tester). The characteristics of the electrical Silicon steel were measured using the instruments solely dedicated to measuring each specimen. The core loss of the Bar-Specimen, which is commonly used, was found to be less than that of the Ring-Specimen. This is a very important design factor in achieving the objectives of improving the product efficiency and predicting the performance of electrical equipment. It serves as a critical point of view in order to reduce the error between design value and product value. A comparative analysis was conducted regarding various characteristics (Hysteresis, B-H characteristic, Iron loss, Minor loop, Coercive force, Residual magnetic flux density, etc.) of the electrical silicon steel considered in the design of the electrical equipment according to the specimen.

  • This contribution presents an extended one-dimensional theory for piezoelectric beam-type structures with non-ideal electrodes. For these types of electrodes the equipotential area condition is not satisfied. The main motivation of our research is originated from passive vibration control: when an elastic structure is covered by several piezoelectric patches that are linked via resistances and inductances, vibrational energy is efficiently dissipated if the electric network is properly designed. Assuming infinitely small piezoelectric patches that are connected by an infinite number of electrical, in particular resistive and inductive elements, one obtains the Telegrapher's equation for the voltage across the piezoelectric transducer. Embedding this outcome into the framework of Bernoulli-Euler, the final equations are coupled to the wave equations for the longitudinal motion of a bar and to the partial differential equations for the lateral motion of the beam. We present results for the wave propagation of a longitudinal bar for several types of electrode properties. The frequency spectra are computed (phase angle, wave number, wave speed), which point out the effect of resistive and inductive electrodes on wave characteristics. Our results show that electrical damping due to the resistivity of the electrodes is different from internal (=strain velocity dependent) or external (=velocity dependent) mechanical damping. Finally, results are presented, when the structure is excited by a harmonic single force, yielding that resistive-inductive electrodes are suitable candidates for passive vibration control that might be of great interest for practical applications in the future.
