A 3-D particle tracking model with normalized characteristic equations has been developed to predict the variation of near-field mixing characteristics and the far-field transport of the effluent plumes discharged from sea outfalls. The model was applied to the case study on the Masan sea outfall plumes discharged through a submerged multiport-diffuser. Numerical simulations of the effluent transport for 15 days which cover neap and spring tidal cycles in Masan Bay were conducted using fall velocities of the solid wastes and the initial plume characteristics obtained from normalized near-field characteristic equations. The results showed that time variations in near-field minimum dilutions with tidal ambient flow conditions are about $45{\sim}49$. Most of the heavy particles in the effluent plumes were settled and deposited in the vicinity of the outfalls immediately, and the finer particles were transported eastwards 3 km away from the outfalls for 15 days. A similar depositional trend of contaminated sediment was also found during a recent field survey.
Directly searching for undiscovered hydrothermal vent sites is inefficient due to the practical difficulty of comprehensively imaging vent fields. Thus, most searches for hydrothermal vent sites rely on the detection of hydrothermal plumes from water column observation. Detecting and measuring the hydrothermal plumes are the most efficient way to infer the presence and distribution of hydrothermal vents. Both the array of vertical casting and lateral towing are the most common methods to discover hydrothermal plumes. In this study, we compared results of cast and tow-yo operations along the same section of a spreading center with a distance of 20.5 km in the North Fiji Basin for mapping hydrothermal plumes. Operation of CTD tow-yo provides a detailed pattern of plumes which enable us to locate the hydrothermal vents. On the other hand, identification of hydrothermal activity can be determined effectively by CTD cast with additional analysis of geochemical tracers. Reduction in the operating time is another advantage of CTD cast operation, especially for regional-scale survey. Our results show that the combination of CTD cast and tow-yo would improve the efficiency of the hydrothermal plume survey to locate new hydrothermal vent sites.
This experiment is to understand a characteristics of smoke layer formation affected periodicity of fire plumes. The ON-OFF jet was used to constitute the oscillating flow, which was formed by a mixture of nitrogen gas with kerosene particles. The instantaneous images was obtained by digital video camera using laser sheet technique. The results were confirmed that the smoke layer in the near fire source comprise vortices which are formed by impingement from the periodicity of fire plume. The periodic impinging of plumes were thickened the smoke layer and produced the back-flow.
Various sources, such as wind, waves, ships, and gas leaks from the seafloor, forms bubbles in the ocean. Underwater bubbles cause signal scattering, considerably affecting acoustic measurements. This characteristic of bubbles is used to block underwater noise by attenuating the intensity of the propagated signal. Recently, researchers have been studying the large-scale release of methane gas as bubble plumes from the seabed. Understanding the physical properties and distribution of bubble plumes is crucial for studying the relation between leaked methane gas and climate change. Therefore, a water tank experiment was conducted to estimate the distribution of bubble plumes using seismic imaging techniques and acoustic signals obtained from artificially generated bubbles using a bubble generator. Reverse time migration was applied to image the bubble plumes while the acquired acoustic envelope signal was used to effectively estimate bubble distribution. Imaging results were compared with optical camera images to verify the estimated bubble distribution. The water tank experiment confirmed that the proposed system could successfully image the distribution of bubble plumes using reverse time migration and the envelope signal. The experiment showed that the scattering signal of artificial bubble plumes can be used for seismic imaging.

As a preliminary study for detection techniques of $CO_2$ gas bubble plumes, we have conducted a comparative experiment on artificially generated $CO_2$ gas bubbles plume by using multibeam echosounder (MBES), single beam echosounder (SBES), and sub-bottom profiler (SBP). The rising speed of artificial gas bubbles is higher than references because of compulsory release of compressed gas in the tank. Compared to single beam acoustic equipments, the MBES detects wide swath coverage. It provides exact determination of the source position and 3D information on the gas bubble plumes in the water column. Therefore, it is shown that MBES can distinctly detect gas bubble plumes compared to single beam acoustic equipments. We can establish more effective complementary detection technique by simultaneous operation of MBES and SBES. Consequently, it contributes to improve qualitative and quantitative detection techniques by understanding the acoustic characteristics of the specific gas bubbles.
The contamination of chlorinated ethenes at an industrial complex, Wonju, Korea, was examined based on sixteen rounds of groundwater quality data collected from 2009 to 2013. Remediation technologies such as soil vapor extraction, soil flushing, biostimulation, and pumping-and-treatment have been applied to eliminate the contaminant sources of trichloroethylene (TCE) and to prevent the migration of TCE plume from remediation target zones. At each remediation target zone, temporal monitoring data before and after the application of remediation techniques showed that the aqueous concentrations of TCE plume present at and around the main source areas decreased significantly as a result of remediation technologies. However, the TCE concentration of the plumes at the downstream area remained unchanged in response to the remediation action, but it showed a great fluctuation according to seasonal recharge variation during the monitoring period. Therefore, variations in the contaminant flux across three transects were analyzed. Prior to the remediation action, the concentration and mass discharges of TCE at the transects were affected by seasonal recharge variation and residual DNAPLs sources. After the remediation, the effect of remediation took place clearly at the transects. By tracing a time-series of plume evolution, a greater variation in the TCE concentrations was detected at the plumes near the source zones compared to the relatively stable plumes in the downstream. The difference in the temporal profiles of TCE concentrations between the plumes in the source zone and those in the downstream could have resulted from remedial actions taken at the source zones. This study demonstrates that long term monitoring data are useful in assessing the effectiveness of remediation practices.
In this paper we review current research on Atmospheric Brown Clouds (ABCs) with lightweight Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and miniaturized instruments. The UAV technology for in-situ measurements, including aerosol concentration, aerosol size distribution, aerosol absorption, cloud drop size distribution, solar radiation fluxes (visible and broadband), and spectral radiative fluxes, is a leading-edge technology for cost-effective atmospheric sounding, which can fill the gap between the ground measurement and satellite observation. The first experimental observation with UAVs in Korea, Cheju ABC Plume Monsoon Experiment (CAPMEX), conducted during summer 2008 revealed that the Beijing plumes exerted a strong positive influence on the net warming and fossil-fuel-dominated black-carbon plumes were approximately 100% more efficient warming agents than biomass-burning-dominated plumes. Long-term sustainable routine UAV measurements will eventually provide truly three-dimensional data of ABCs, which is necessary for the better understanding of their climate impacts and for the improvement of numerical models for air pollution, weather forecast and climate change.
Multi plume effects on the base heating have been Investigated with a CFD program. As the flight altitude increases, the plume expansion angle increases regardless of the single or clustered engine. The plume interaction of the clustered engine makes a high temperature thermal shear in the center of four plumes. At low altitude, the high temperature shear flow stays in the center of plumes, but it increases up to engine base with the increasing altitude. At high altitude, the flow from plume to base and the flow from base into outer free stream are supersonic, which transfers the high heat in the center of plumes to the base region. The radiative heat of the clustered engine varies from 220 kW/m² to 469 kW/m² with increasing altitude while those of the single engine are 10 kW/m² and 43.7 kW/m². And the base temperature of the clustered engine varies from 985K to 1223K, and those of the single engine are 483K and 726K. This big radiative heat of clustered engine can be explained by the active high temperature base flow and strong plume interactions.
The structural development of air-water bubble plumes has been measured under different condition on air flow rate in a cylindrical bath. The time-averaged structure of plumes has been measured with an oscilloscope and an electro-conductivity probe. The temperature of bubbles was also obtained by a thermal-infrared camera. Gas volume fraction and bubble frequency were high since bubbles concentrated on the nozzle. In general, their axial and radial values tended to decrease with increasing distance. Bubble temperature reached water temperature within a short time. The present study showed that thermal equilibrium between bubbles and water was completed before bubbles flow became stable.
The base flow regions of a three-body sounding rocket containing multiple exhaust plumes were numerically investigated in three dimensions for a free stream Mach number of 2.7 at flight altitude 18.5 km. The flowfields were calculated using the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with an one-equation turbulence model of Baldwin-Earth. The present calculations were executed based upon a chemically frozen, single perfect gas model assumption. Due to the symmetry of the three-body rocket of each single nozzle, only one fourth of the computational domain was considered for the analysis. The results indicate that a babe heating effect is not considerable due to the small expansion of the plumes. In the base, however, a low speed recirculating flow dominates the region.
