Isotope-dilution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to determine trace amounts of Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni and Zn in sediment. Sediment samples were dissolved by microwave digestion with addition of mixed acid ($HNO_3$, HF and $HClO_4$). Lead was determined after separation of alkaline and alkaline earth metals by an ammonium pyrrolidenedithiocarbarmate (APDC) solvent extraction. The other elements were determined after separation of iron, tin and titanium by hydroxide precipitation. Recovery efficiency of the analyte elements was not satisfactory, but most of matrix elements causing the isobaric interference could be effectively eliminated by the separation. Good agreement was achieved with the certified values in the analysis of the two sediment reference materials.
An analytical method has been developed which determines lead in steel samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) with sample introduction by the hydride generation. The lead hydride is not stable and requires and oxidant for the oxidation into metastable Pb(IV) before reduction to $PbH_4$ with $NaBH_4$. A study was carried out to find and optimum lead hydride generation condition for a sample solution with more than $1000{\mu}g/mL$ Fe matrix. $K_2Cr_2O_7$ was found to work as an efficient oxidant when more than $10{\mu}g/mL$ Fe matrix was present. Lactic acid was used with the oxidant as a complexing agent of the metastable Pb(IV) to enhance sensitivity. Optimum concentrations of the sample acidity, oxidant and lactic acid were different depending on the matrix concentration. The isotope dilution method was employed for the quantitation of lead. The determined Pb concentrations of the NIST steel SRM 361 and 362 were in good agreement with the certified values within the uncertainty range.
Various separation modes in HPLC, such as anion exchange (AE), reversed-phase (RP), and affinity (AF) chromatography were examined for the separation of selenium species in human blood serum and urine. While RP- and AE-HPLC were mainly used for the separation of small molecular selenium species, double column AF-HPLC achieved the separation of selenoproteins in blood serum efficiently. Further, the effluent of AF-HPLC was enzymatically hydrolyzed and then analyzed with RP HPLC for selenoamino acid study. The versatility of the hybrid technique makes the in-depth study of selenium species possible. For quantification, post column isotope dilution (ID) with $^{78}Se$ spike was performed. ORC ICP/MS (octapole reaction cell inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry) was used with 4 mL $min^{-1}$ Hydrogen as reaction gas. In urine sample, inorganic selenium and SeCys were identified. In blood serum, selenoproteins GPx, SelP and SeAlb were detected and quantified. The concentration for GPx, SelP and SeAlb was $22.8{\pm}3.4\;ng\;g^{-1}$, $45.2{\pm}1.7\;ng\;g^{-1}$, and $16.1{\pm}2.2\;ng\;g^{-1}$, respectively when $^{80}Se/^{78}Se$ was used. The sum of these selenoproteins ($84.1{\pm}4.4\;ng\;g^{-1}$) agrees well with the total selenium concentration measured with the ID method of $87.0{\pm}3.0\;ng\;g^{-1}$. Enzymatic hydrolysis of each selenium proteins revealed that SeCys is the major amino acid for all three proteins and SeMet is contained in SeAlb only.
Duwon meteorite was fallen on 23 November 1943 in Duwonmyeon, Goheung, Jeolanam-Do. We measured rare earth element abundance of Duwon meteorite by isotope dilution thermal ion mass spectrometry (ID-TIMS) and ICP-MS. As a result, except La and Ce, abundance of other rare earth element show a correspondence within 10% of error range. However, La and Ce show more than 70% in abundance, which is considered due to 1) experimental procedure or 2) inhomogeneity of sample. Leedey meteorite was fallen on 25 November 1943 in Dewey County, Oklahoma, USA. which suggested that fallen difference between Leedey and Duwon meteorites is only 2 days. Leedey and Duwon meteorites are classified as ordinary chondrite of L6 type. In Leedey chondrite-normalized REE pattern, Duwon meteorite shows nearly flattened, which suggests close relationship between Leedey and Duwon meteorites meteoritically or cosmochemically.

The aim of this research was to investigate different factors, including cryoprotective agents (CPAs), diluents, dilution ratios, equilibrium times, freezing rates, and thawing methods to optimize cryopreservation protocols for large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea). The parameters evaluated were sperm motility, sperm activity index (SAI), survival rate, and DNA damage. Different types of CPAs, such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), propylene glycol (PG), ethylene glycol (EG), methanol, and glycerol, were tested for sperm preservation. The highest motility, SAI, and survival rate were observed when EG was used. Different diluents such as Stein's solution, Hank's balanced salt solution, marine fish Ringer's solution, artificial seminal plasma (ASP) of small yellow croaker, and Cortland solution were investigated. The highest post-thaw motility was observed upon using ASP as the diluent. Different concentrations of EG were then mixed with ASP to identify the optimal EG concentration. Experimental results showed that the motility (70.33 ± 1.20%), SAI (5), and survival rate (78.30 ± 0.42%) of post-thaw sperm were optimum when 10% EG and ASP were used as the CPA and diluent of cryopreservation, respectively. Post-thaw sperm motility was high at equilibration times below 150 s and at an optimum dilution ratio of 1:1 (sperm: CPA + diluent) and was not significantly different compared with fresh sperm motility. The freezing rate was found to be slow below -10℃/min. The thawing temperature of 45℃ was identified as ideal. The percentage of tail DNA in post-thaw sperm at 10% EG and ASP was also investigated and was found to have more significant DNA damage than that in fresh sperm but significantly lower damage than that in post-thaw sperm at EG concentrations of 5%, 15%, and 20% (p < 0.05). The cryopreservation protocols obtained in this study will be useful in large yellow croaker hatcheries.
Interferences were removed using anion exchange solid phase extraction (AE SPE) in quantification of selenoproteins in Korean human blood serum with affinity high performance liquid chromatography (AF HPLC)-inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry (ICP/MS). The average selenium level obtained for healthy Koreans was $94.3{\pm}2.3ngg^{-1}$ using isotope dilution method. AE SPE was coupled to AF column to separate 3 selenoproteins, glutathione peroxidase GPx, selenoprotein SelP, and selenoalbumin SeAlb. Post column isotope dilution was employed to quantify the proteins. The certified reference material of human blood serum BCR-637 was analyzed to give total selenoprotein concentration of $85.4{\pm}3.4ngg^{-1}$, which agreed well with the reference value of $81{\pm}7ngg^{-1}$. The pooled concentration of GPx, SelP, and SeAlb from healthy Koreans (n=20) was $12.1{\pm}1.4ngg^{-1}$, $57.2{\pm}2.0ngg^{-1}$, and $20.0{\pm}1.9ngg^{-1}$, respectively. The sum of selenoproteins is $89.3ngg^{-1}$, which is about the same as the total selenium concentration of $94.3ngg^{-1}$. The fact suggests that selenium in blood serum is mostly consisted of selenoproteins. After the removal of interference, GPx showed a significant decrease (more than 50%) from $25.0ngg^{-1}$ to $12.1ngg^{-1}$. It was identified that the interference in blood serum was mostly from GPx and the use of AE SPE was proven to be efficient in eliminating Cl and Br that cause interference to GPx.
Selenium exists in various forms of chemical species. The activity and bioavailability is strongly dependent on its chemical form and concentration. Consequently the information on each selenium species and its concentration must be exactly determined for the food we take in. In this study, selenium species in seafood were separated and quantified by RP (reversed phase) HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography) coupled with ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) using post-column isotope dilution. $^{79}Br$, which interferes on $^{80}Se$, has mostly been removed by solid phase extraction and then mathematical correction has been applied for the more accurate correction. The experimental result for CRM (certified reference material) DOLT-4 agreed well with the certified value but each selenium species could not be compared. SeCys (selenocysteine) and SeMet (selenomethionine) were the major species detected in seafood such as belt fish, spanish mackerel, and squid that have been serving as Korean diet. The concentrations found in Korean sea food for SeCys and SeMet were in the range of 0-661.6 mg/kg and 137.3-462.7 mg/kg, respectively.
Antarctic Environmental Monitoring Handbook' was published by COMNAP/SCAR in 2000. The standardized method described in this handbook is recommended for monitoring of antarctic environment. High pressure bomb technique in this guide was used to decompose soil samples. In compliance with this guide book, high pressure bomb technique was applied to decompose the antarctic soil sampled at the King Sejong Station. An Isotope Dilution-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ID-ICP-MS) was applied to determine mass concentrations of Pb, Cu and Zn in the soil. The accuracy in this method was verified by the analysis of certified reference materials (CRM) of NIST 2702 (marine sediment). The analytical results agreed with certified value within the range from 99.5~100.8%. Matrix separation was necessitated for the determination of Cu and Zn by Chelex 100 ion exchange resin. As a result, the average mass concentrations of Pb, Cu and Zn which are suspected to be caused by anthropogenic pollution were 332.9 mg/kg, 95.6 mg/kg and 115.3 mg/kg, respectively. Those for the metals sampled in the soils of the remote regions from the station were 28.1 mg/kg, 101.8 mg/kg and 115.6 mg/kg, respectively.

VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are generally generated in the painting process, or at the company and laundry where use organic solvents. The VOCs consist of various hydrocarbons and has low calorific value due to its dilution with atmospheric air. Therefore, the VOCs are difficult to burn by a conventional fuel combustor. In this study, a novel plasma dump combustor was proposed for the treatment of low calorific VOC gases. This combustor was designed a combination of the characteristics in a plasma burner, a dump combustor and a 3D matrix burner. The combustor has good structure for maintaining enough residence time and reaction temperature for stable flame formation and VOC destruction. For investigating the performance characteristics of the plasma dump combustor, an experiment was achieved for VOC feed rate, VOC injector position, etc. Toluene was used as a surrogate of VOC. The novel combustor gave better performance than a conventional combustor, showing that VOC destruction rate and energy efficiency were 89.64% and 12.27 kg/kWh respectively, at feeding rate of 450 L/min of VOC of 3,000 ppm of toluene concentration.
The concentration of selenium in grain samples was determined using isotope dilution method in ORC-ICPMS. The experimental conditions were optimized to $H_2$ mode and the flow rate was $4.0\;mL\;min^{-1}$. ORC in $H_2$ mode proved to eliminate most of polyatomic interferences except $BrH^+$ when Br is present in sample matrix. Chemical removal of Br was very difficult and the mathematical correction was successfully employed. The fraction of $BrH^+$ generated from Br at the current experimental condition was 14.1%. The signal on m/z 82 was corrected and calculated for isotope dilution. The analytical reliability of the propose method was successfully evaluated by analyzing the certified standard reference material NIST SRM 1566 and 1567. The method was applied to real samples and the results are $0.034{\pm}0.001\;{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ for white rice, $0.059{\pm}0.002_5\;{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ for brown rice, $0.029{\pm}0.001_4\;{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ for black rice, and $0.034{\pm}0.002\;{\mu}g \;g^{-1}$ for barley. The detection limits ($3\sigma$) for Se was $0.012\;ng\;g^{-1}$.
