  • Heat rate is a representative index to estimate the performance of turbine cycle in nuclear power plant. Accuracy of heat rate calculation is dependent on the accuracy of measurement for plant status variables. Uncertainty of heat rate can be modeled using uncertainty propagation model. We developed practical estimation model of heat rate uncertainty using the propagation and regression model. The uncertainty model is used in the performance analysis system developed for the operating nuclear power plant.

  • A robust control design procedure for a nuclear reactor has been developed and experimentally validated on the Penn State TRIGA research reactor. The utilization of the robust controller as a component of an autonomous control system is also demonstrated. Two methods of specifying a low order (fourth-order) nominal-plant model for a robust control design were evaluated: 1) by approximation based on the 'physics' of the process and 2) by an optimal Hankel approximation of a higher order plant model. The uncertainty between the nominal plant models and the higher order plant model is supplied as a specification to the ,u-synthesis robust control design procedure. Two methods of quantifying uncertainty were evaluated: 1) a combination of additive and multiplicative uncertainty and 2) multiplicative uncertainty alone. The conclusions are that the optimal Hankel approximation and a combination of additive and multiplicative uncertainty are the best approach to design robust control for this application. The results from nonlinear simulation testing and the physical experiments are consistent and thus help to confirm the correctness of the robust control design procedures and conclusions.

  • In order to reject the steady-state tracking error, it is common to introduce integral compensators in servosystems for constant reference signals. However, if the mathematical model of the plant is exact and no disturbance input exists, the integral compensation is not necessary. From this point of view, a two-degree-of-freedom(2DOF) servosystem has been proposed, in which the integral compensation is effective only when there is a modeling error or a disturbance input. The present paper considers a robust stability of this 2DOF servosystem with nonlinear type uncertainty in the system, and a robust stability condition for the servosystem is introduced. This result guarantees that if the plant uncertainty is in the permissible set defined by the condition, gain tuning can be carried out to suppress the influence of the plant uncertainties and disturbance inputs.

  • This paper addresses the design of State-feedback Robust Guaranteed-Cost Controllers with controller gain variations. Since the unstructured uncertainty is the most dominant uncertainty in the modeling of the plant, the plant is assumed to have the unstructured uncertainty. It is necessary to take the controller parameter perturbation into consideration when we design the robust controller. Otherwise, the resulting controller may show the fragility property.   • The containment of the nuclear power plant is the last barrier of radiation release when the reactor coolant pipe rupture is occurred. Each plant has to be tested every 5 years whether the containment leak rate meets its technical specifications. We have developed the leak rate test system and in this paper, we describe the results of the uncertainty analysis on the measurement channels and its propagation to the calculation results.

  • In the last decade, the best estimate plus uncertainty methodologies in nuclear technology and nuclear power plant design have become a trending topic in the nuclear field. Since BEPU was allowed for licensing purposes by the most important regulator bodies, different uncertainty assessment methods have become popular, overall non-parametric methods. While non-parametric tolerance regions can be well stated and used in uncertainty quantification for licensing purposes, the propagation of the uncertainty through different codes (multi-scale, multiphysics) in cascade needs a better depiction of uncertainty than the one provided by the tolerance regions or a probability distribution. An alternative method based on the parametric or distributional probability boxes is used to perform uncertainty quantification and propagation regarding statistic uncertainty from one code to another. This method is sample-size independent and allows well-defined tolerance intervals for uncertainty quantification, manageable for uncertainty propagation. This work characterizes the distributional p-boxes behavior on uncertainty quantification and uncertainty propagation through nested random sampling.

  • This paper presents a procedure of implementing a robust controller for a paper-making plant in DCSs. A paper-making process generally has triple problems to automatically tune its output qualities : Long transport delays which are not able to be simply linearized. The transfer matrix of the process is not square. And every plant model has some uncertainty in low and middle frequency region.   • In this paper, we propose a method which control parametric uncertainty systems using PID controller by fuzzy auto tuning. We get the error and the error change rate of plant output correspond to the initial value of parameter using the Ziegler-Nickols tuning and determine the new proportional gain$(K_p)$ and the integral time $(T_i)$ from fuzzy tuner by the error and error change rate of plant output as a membership function of fuzzy theory. The Fuzzy Auto-tuning algorithm for PID controller operate to adapt variable parameter of plant in parametric uncertainty systems. It is shown this method considerably improve the transient response at computer simulation.

The present paper considers robust stability of this 2DOF servosystem incorporating an observer to the structured and unstructured uncertainties of the controlled plant. A robust stability condition is obtained using Riccati inequality, which is written in a linear matrix inequality (LMI) and independent of the gain of the integral compensator. This result impies that if the plant uncertainty is in the allowable set defined by the LMI condition, a high-gain integral compensation can be carried preserving robust stability to accelerate the tracking response.

  • In the nuclear safety studies, a new trend refers to the evaluation of uncertainties as a mandatory component of best-estimate safety analysis which is a modern and technically consistent approach being known as BEPU (Best Estimate Plus Uncertainty). The major objectives of this study consist in performing a study of uncertainties/sensitivities of the major analysis results for a generic CANDU 6 Nuclear Power Plant during Station Blackout (SBO) progression to understand and characterize the sources of uncertainties and their effects on the key figure-of-merits (FOMs) predictions in severe accidents (SA). The FOMs of interest are hydrogen mass generation and event timings such as the first fuel channel failure time, beginning of the core disassembly time, core collapse time and calandria vessel failure time. The outcomes of the study, will allow an improvement of capabilities and expertise to perform uncertainty and sensitivity analysis with severe accident codes for CANDU 6 Nuclear Power Plant.
