Black rot caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris (Xcc) is one of the most serious diseases of crucifers world-wide. To establish the efficient screening method for resistant cabbage to Xcc, different inoculation methods, inoculation positions, growth stages of seedlings, and incubation temperatures after inoculation were investigated with the seven cabbage cultivars showing different resistance degrees to the pathogen. Clipping with mouse-tooth forceps was better inoculation method than piercing with 18 pins or cutting with scissors to distinguish the level of resistance and susceptibility. In inoculation using mouth-tooth forceps, clipping the edges of the leaves near veins is more effective than injuring the veins of the leaves directly. In addition, the inoculated plants kept at $22^{\circ}C$ showed more clear resistant and susceptible responses than those kept at 26 or $30^{\circ}C$. On the basis of the results, we suggest that an efficient screening method for resistance of cabbage cultivars to black rot is to clip the edges of the leaves near veins of the four-week-old seedlings with mouth-tooth forceps dipped in a suspension of Xcc at a concentration of $7{\times}10^7$ cfu/ml and incubate the inoculated plants in a growth room at $22^{\circ}C$ with 12-hr light a day.
This report describes methods for selecting informative single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and the development of an online Solanaceae genome database, using 234 tomato resequencing data entries deposited in the NCBI SRA database. The 126 accessions of Solanum lycopersicum, 68 accessions of Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme, and 33 accessions of Solanum pimpinellifolium, which are frequently used for breeding, and some wild-species tomato accessions were included in the analysis. To select tag-SNPs, we identified 29,504,960 SNPs in 234 tomatoes and then separated the SNPs in the genic and intergenic regions according to gene annotation. All tag-SNP were selected from non-synonymous SNPs among the SNPs present in the gene region and, as a result, we obtained tag-SNP from 13,845 genes. When there were no non-synonymous SNPs in the gene, the genes were selected from synonymous SNPs. The total number of tag-SNPs selected was 27,539. To increase the usefulness of the information, a Solanaceae genome database website, TGsol (http://tgsol. seeders.co.kr/), was constructed to allow users to search for detailed information on resources, SNPs, haplotype, and tag-SNPs. The user can search the tag-SNP and flanking sequences for each gene by searching for a gene name or gene position through the genome browser. This website can be used to efficiently search for genes related to traits or to develop molecular markers.

Color-fleshed potatoes 'Hong-young' and 'Ja-young' were developed by RDA, and it has reported that they have high content of anthocyanin. Additionally they show higher radical scavenging activity compared to white or yellow fleshed potatoes. So it will be expected that the consumption of color-fleshed potatoes gradually increase by pre-peeled potatoes and color potato chips. This study was conducted to enhance the utilization of the tuber of color-fleshed potatoes. At first, we isolated four compounds from the organic solvents soluble layer in ethanol extract of tuber, and their structures were characterized by spectroscopic methods and by comparing their data to those in the literature. Their structures were characterized to be caffeic acid (1), chlorogenic acid (2), gallic acid (3) and protocatechuic acid (4) for the first time reported from this source. These compounds were already reported ingredients but considered to exhibit a high physiological activity. The quantitative determination on the four compounds in tuber of color-fleshed [Hong-young (HY) & Ja-young (JY)] and white-fleshed [Superior (SP)] potatoes samples were measured using HPLC. The concentration of caffeic acid in each total fractionations of HY (184.4 g/g) and JY (435.1 g/g) were higher than in total fractionation of SP (31.1). The concentration of gallic acid in each total fractionations of HY (282.1 g/g) and JY (315.2 g/g) were higher than in total fractionation of SP (143.3 g/g). The concentration of chlorogenic acid contents appeared to be highest in total fractionation of SP (954.2 g/g). The concentration of protocatechuic acid in total fractionation of HY (120.3 g/g) was higher than in each total fractionationss of JY (74.4 g/g) and SP (102.7 g/g). Overall, color-fleshed potatoes had higher amount of physicochemical properties than 'Superior'. Therefore, color-fleshed potatoes are expected to be highly valuable items for the development and applications of a functional food. In addition, these results will provide fundamental information for improving sitological value, and breeding of new cultivar.
Gene edited crops can be classified as SDN-1, SDN-2 and SDN-3 group depending on their mutation's range and the usage of donor DNA. The SDN-1 and SDN-2 crops, in particular, could be developed as 100% transgene-free, which do not contain any DNA fragment of the vector or guide RNA used for gene editing such as CRISPR Cas9 system. Therefore, there are no scientific methods available for the detection of these crops and differentiation with the one produced by conventional cross breeding techniques. Additionally, it would be impossible to properly implement the existing GMO regulation law, in particular, the national legislation for "GMO labelling". In this regard, Australia has announced that SDN-1 crops will not be subjected to the existing GMO regulation. Furthermore, Argentina and Brazil have established a new policy that GE crops with no transgene (100% transgene-free crops) should be exempted from the scope of the GMO. In addition, Japan has also announced that "an organism that has no remnants of inserted nucleic acid processed extracellularly is not subjected to the Cartagena Act". It means that SDN-2 crops can also be exempted from the scope of GMO. In this trend, in South Korea, I suggested that gene edited crops with no remnants of inserted foreign DNA fragments should be excluded from the existing GMO regulation. Thus, I expect that diverse elite crop lines should be developed by using advanced gene editing technologies
The effect of directions (north to south vs east to west) of planting row, planting intensities (10/15, 15/15, 20/15, 25/15 cm/cm) and the number of rows consecutively (1,2, 3,4) for both the CMS and pollen parent in alternation, on the seed yield of CMS of rice was tested with a breeding line V20A/Iri342$\^$*8/. When the planting row was made in vertical direction to the wind direction during anthesis, the seed yield was higher than the other direction regardless the planting densities and number of rows consecutive. Seed yield increased as high as 46.9%. The higher planting intensities up to 10/15 cm/cm yielded the higher hybrid seeds. The highest yield was 81.2 kg/ha. The yield variation among plants within a plot and among the plants within a replication was relatively large. Increased pollen parent row numbers caused increased grain fertility per plant, but the seed yield was increased by reduced pollen parent row number. Reduced CMS parental row numbers caused increased grain fertility per plant, but the seed yield was increased by increased CMS parental row numbers. Considering the hybrid seed yield, parental seed yield and operational convenience, 4 rows of CMS and 1 row of pollen parent in alternate with 20/15 or 25/15 (cm/cm) planting densities seemed to be the rational layout.
To establish a generation acceleration technique, two crops a year at field condition of Suweon, 10 varieties different in their spring growth habit were tested with 6 different seeding time after harvesting. These materials were harvested on June 10, 19, 79 and tested for their seed production ability at varions seeding time from July I I to August 15 with a week interval. An immatured seed germination technique and green vernalization methods were applied in cycling generations and the results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. In summer growing, seedlings establishment after transplanting was better in earlier transplanting. 2. Heading time was remarkably enhanced by earlier transplanting. Considering the results of two years early or mid of July was the suitable time to plant the second summer crop. 3. Those varieties of spring growth habit expressed little variations in plant height among the varieties. In 1978 which is referred as warm year produced plant height as tall as 8-16cm and poor crop but produced good crop with 25-65cm plant height in 1979. 4. No definit tendency in the length of spike was. observed among the cultivars but longer spike was found in winter wheat compared to the spring. 5. Number of spikes per plant was ranged from 1 to 3 regardless the transplanting time in 1979. However, more spikes per plant were produced in early or mid of July transplanting and those varieties of higher growth habit than V did not produces any spikes. 6. Higher number of grains per spike was found at earlier transplanted varieties. Therefore, it is concluded that those materials of I-IV growth habit with mid or early July transplanting would be suitable in practical sense considering their ability of seed production. 7. Two-year results indicated that wheat crop can not tolerate the temperature level higher than average 32$^{\circ}C$ C at Suweon. In this regard, the cultivation schedule was established assuming average temperature condition like the year of 1979 which was possible to grow wheats.
A review was given of the role of traditional morphometrics in plant morphological studies using 54 published studies in three major journals and others in Korea, such as Journal of Korean Forestry Society, Korean Journal of Plant Taxonomy, Korean Journal of Breeding, Korean Journal of Apiculture, Journal of Life Science, and Korean Journal of Plant Resources from 1997 to 2008. The two most commonly used techniques of data analysis, cluster analysis (CA) and principal components analysis (PCA) with other statistical tests were discussed. The common problem of PCA is the underlying assumptions of methods, like random sampling and multivariate normal distribution of data. The procedure was intended mainly for continuous data and was not efficient for data which were not well summarized by variances or covariances. Likewise CA was most appropriate for categorical rather than continuous data. Also, the CA produced clusters whether or not natural groupings existed, and the results depended on both the similarity measure chosen and the algorithm used for clustering. An additional problems of the PCA and the CA arised with both qualitative and quantitative data with a limited number of variables and/or too few numbers of samples. Some of these problems may be avoided if a certain number of variables (more than 20 at least) and sufficient samples (40-50 at least) are considered for morphometric analyses, but we do not think that the methods are all mighty tools for data analysts. Instead, we do believe that reasonable applications combined with focus on objectives and limitations of each procedure would be a step forward.
This study was conducted to investigate single crossing condition of M. sacchariflrous and M. sinensis for breeding of M. ${\times}$ giganteus cultivar. Compared with natural day length condition, cultivation in short day length condition shorten days to heading to 18~27 days in both species. Pollen germination ratio of were 75.8% at 6 o'clock in M. sacchariflorus and 51.9% at 7 o'clock in M. sinensis but decreased to below 10% at 8 o'clock in both species. When cut ears immerged in 150 mL of cut-flowers conservation solution and isolated with covering of white non-woven fabric, flowering and pollen dispersal were persisted for 7 days, and the ratio of pollen germination were above 40% for 4 days. The ratio of self-fertilization of both species were below 2.5%, but open pollenation ratio were above 50%. We obtained 437 seeds with experimental single cross of 14 combinations between tetraploid M. sacchariflorus and diploid M. siensis by application of developed single crossing methods. In the single cross, numbers of seed set were different by mother plants. Thus, the newly investigated single crossing condition will be used to breed M. ${\times}$ giganteous cultivar which is sterile and has superior characteristics of biomass yield.

Karl Foerster had the most significant influence on the establishment of the German garden culture. From the viewpoint of planting design, in particular, he greatly contributed to the selection of new materials and the distribution of gardens. Therefore it is worth re-exploring his garden in that he triggered the use of natural planting that is widely used these days and already used ornamental grasses in his garden designs. This study aimed to review Foerster's garden to understand his planting design methods and their historical significance. The results suggest: Firstly, in spatial structure he designed sunken gardens influenced by the climate and triggered the use of natural planting by applying naturally open meadow, ferns and grasses. Secondly, in terms of the use of materials, he pointed out the necessity to use perennial plants. He bred perennial plants that the general public could easily grow and that were resistant against cold and created show gardens to demonstrate the characteristics of the plants and possible combination methods to the public. Thirdly, in terms of the aesthetical principles of his planting design, he focuses on colors and seasons and was interested in blue, yellow and white colors. In doing so, he developed new varieties such as Delphinium, Rudbeckia and Phlox. He emphasized the necessity of seven seasons, which served as the ancestor of contemporary winter gardens.
This experiment was carried out to establish the efficiency of crop breeding on comparison of combination methods of single, 3-way, and double crosses and combination order of 4 winter wheat which were different in origin, source, and plant types, On comparison of 4 crossing modes, there appeared the earliest heading and the highest grain yield in double cross, and decreased in 3-way. single crosses. and parents in order, There showed the significant mean squares of GCA and SCA in 4${\times}$4 diallel analysis for grain yield and yield components. Grumil and Bezostaya 1 exhibited highest GCA effect of grain yield which appeared the actual highest grain yield. There appeared the highest SCA-effect in F$_1$ (Eunpamil/Bezostaya 1) showing 4.22. Of the 3 double crosses there exhibited the highest grain yield in F$_1$ (Grumil/Eunpamil/ /Lanota/Bezostaya 1). Two single crosses for this double cross ---F$_1$ (Grumil/Eunpamil) and F$_1$ (Lancota/Bezostaya 1) --- do not revealed directly for this yield, but combined each other by chromosome switch as combination of F$_1$ (Grumil/Lancota), F$_1$(Grumil/Bezostaya 1), F$_1$(Eunpamil/Lancota) and F$_1$(Eunpamil/Bezostaya 1) which appeared the higher grain yields and SCA-effects. Of the six 3-way crosses. F$_1$ (Lancota/Bezostaya 1/ /Eunpamil) expressed the highest grain yield. Its combinations were F$_1$ (Lancota/Eunpamil) and F$_1$ (Bezostaya 1/Eunpamil) combined by chromosome switch, which its grain yield and SCA-effect were higher.
