To minimize cultivation costs, prevent insect-pest infestation, and improve the production efficiency of thermophilic mushrooms, plant substrates obtained from local areas in Cambodia were used for production of both spawn and mushrooms. In this experiment, different sawdusts different organic wastes and grain ingredients and analyzed for improvement of spawn-production efficiency. Four thermophilic mushroom species, Pleurotus sajor-caju (oyster mushroom, Sambok), Ganoderma lucidum (deer horn shaped), Auricularia auricula (ear mushroom), and Lentinula edodes (shiitake), were used to identify efficient new substrates for spawn and mushroom production. Although the mycelia in the rubber tree sawdust medium showed a slightly slower growth rate (10.9 cm/15 days) than mycelia grown in grains (11.2 cm/15 days in rice seeds), rubber tree sawdust appeared to be an adequate replacement for grain spawn substrates. Th findings indicate that rubber tree sawdust, sugarcane bagasse, and acacia tree sawdust supplemented with rice bran and calcium carbonate could be new alternative the substrates for. Although sugarcane bagasse and rubber tree sawdust showed similarly high biological efficiencies (BE) of 60% and 60.8%, respectively, acacia tree sawdust exhibited relatively a low biological efficiency of 22.4%. However, it is expected that acacia sawdust has potential for the mushroom cultivation when supplemented with currently used sawdust substrates in Cambodia, because of its relatively low price. The price of the sawdust (20 kg sawdust= 6500 Riel or 1.6 USD) currently used was 6.5 times higher than the price of acacia sawdust (201000 Riel or 0.25 USD). Therefore, utilization for acacia sawdust for mushroom cultivation could become feasible as it would reduce by producing costs of mushrooms in rural areas of Cambodia.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.) is one of the most important crops for human and animal nutrition. Nonetheless, sorghum has a cyanogenic glucoside compound which can be degraded into hydrogen cyanide, toxic to humans and animals even with tiny amount. In consequence, breeding materials with a low cyanide level has been a top priority in sorghum breeding programs. To fulfill our long-term goal, we are screening sorghum accessions with low cyanide level, which would be an important breeding material for food safety. We collected seeds of various sorghum accessions and analyzed relevant metabolites to find useful breeding materials of sorghum accessions containing low cyanide. Fourteen wild relatives were obtained from the University of Georgia in US, a reference accession BTx623, and three local varieties from National Agrobiodiversity Center of Rural Development Administration in Korea, and one wild species from the Wild Plant Resources Seed Bank of Korea University in Korea. Sorghum plants were grown in plastic greenhouse under natural conditions. After growing, leaf samples were harvested at different developmental stages: seedling phase, vegetative phase (right before flowering), and reproductive phase (ripening). Using collected samples, quantification analysis were performed by an HPLC system for three metabolites (dhurrin, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid) in sorghum plants. Prior to metabolome analysis, specific experimental condition for HPLC system was set to be able to separate three metabolites simultaneously. Under this condition, these metabolites were quantified in each accession by HPLC system. We observed that the metabolite contents were changed differently by developmental stages and accessions. We clustered these results into five groups as patterns of their contents by developmental stages. Most of accessions showed that 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde content was very high at seedling stage and decreased rapidly at vegetative phase. Interestingly, the patterns of dhurrin content were very different among clusters. However, 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid content was maintained at low levels by developmental stages in most accessions. The results would demonstrate how dhurrin and alternative degradation pathways are differentiated in each accession.
Soil blocks were taken into culture boxes from 12 paddy fields within 5 km radii of Yonggwang and Ulchin NPPs and $^{90}Sr$ was applied to the surface water at a pre-transplanting stage and $1{\sim}2$ days before the start of heading. Following the pre-transplanting application, transfer factors were investigated for $2{\sim}4$ years. In the year of application, transfer factors $(m^2\;kg^{-1}-dry)\;of\;^{90}Sr$ applied before transplanting, showing no regionally distinguishable trend, varied with soils by a factor of about 2 with averages of $2.6{\times}10^{-4}$ for hulled seeds and $1.3{\times}10^{-2}$ for straw Transfer factors of $^{90}Sr$ applied shortly before heading were about 2 times greater than those applied before transplanting. Transfer factors tended to decrease with increasing soil pH and exchangeable Ca. Generic values of $^{90}Sr$ transfer factors in the year of deposition were proposed for the Korean paddy fields. In the second year compared with the first year, the transfer factor decreased more in Ulchin soils, which were on the whole higher in sand content, than in Yonggwang soils. For Yonggwang soils as a whole, the annual decrease in transfer factor was well described by an exponential equation with a half-life of about 2.2 years.
Direct seeding is a cultivation method of Korean ginseng which can cut down production cost and increase productivity. This study was conducted to obtain detailed information about this method and to aid the development of it in Korea. Major pre-crops before ginseng cultivation were rice, corn and rye, and organic matters, such as rice straw, rye straw and poultry feces were used for basal fertilization. In direct seeding of the ginseng field, seeding density was 196 to 210 seeds per $3.3m^2$ and germination ratio was 67%. Survival ratio of 4-year-old ginsengs which were products of direct seeding was 51%, and more than 100 plants per $3.3m^2$ survived. The most critical diseases in the directly seeded ginseng field were grey mold, damping off, and stem diseases including stem spot disease. Plant growth of the ginseng cultivated by the direct seeding method was not different from the ginseng cultivated by transplanting method. But the root of the ginseng cultivated by the direct seeding method took the shape of a shorter main root compared to the ginseng cultivated by the transplanting method. Root yield per $3.3m^2$ of the direct seeding ginseng field was larger compared to the field of the transplanting cultivation.

Direct thrombin inhibitor, which is effective to prevent or cure the thrombosis, has been investigated in worldwide. In this study, we tried to screen antithrombosis agent from edible or medicinal plant. A strong antithrombin activity was identified from methanol or $95\%$ ethanol extract of buckwheat seeds. The solvent fractionation of buckwheat extracts using hexane, ethylacetate, butanol revealed that the butanol fraction has a prominent antithrombin activity. Thrombin time (blood-clot formation time) exceeded to over $2,000\%$ by addition of the butanol fraction at concentration of $312.5{\mu}g/mL$, whereas thrombin time extended to $336\%$ by addition of aspirin at concentration of $1,500{\mu}g/mL$. The butanol fraction showed anthrone-positive and ninhydrine-negative reaction. The active components were heat-liable, acid-unstable non-proteinous macromolecules (>30 KD). In vivo analysis using ICR male mouse showed that the buckwheat extract was superior than the aspirin in pulmonary thrombosis, KCN-induced coma and death. Our results suggest that the buckwheat is a potential as an antithrombosis agent and medicinal food.
Four treatment leveles(check 500, 1, 000 2, 000ppm) of Ethrel were applied to barley and wheat grown in greenhouse and fields at three stages (preboot, boot, afterboot) of growth in orderd to induce male sterility and to evaluate possibility of practical $F_1$-hybrid-seed production as gametocide. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The shortening plant height, especially the first internode length. spike length and decreasing 1, 000 seeds weight and induction of male sterility, were observed with all Ethrel theatments. The earier the stage of spraying at the boot and the higher concentration of Ethrel, the greater effects were observed. 2. The most practical level of inducing male sterility occurred ranging from 1, 000-2, 000ppm applied at all stages, while with increasing maturity, greater concentration of Ethrel were required to induce the same level of male sterility. .3. Great differences for male sterility per spike in bagged and unbagged spikes were shown with all treatments indicated ovary receptiveness, and that out-crossing has taken place, 4. Ethrel treatment induced more practicable extent of male sterility in barley than wheat. This results indicated that $F_1$-hybrid-seed production in barley with gametocide appears feasible if high combining ability lines were selected for increased out-crossing ratio. 5. There seemed to be no indication of additive surfactant influence on the Ehrel action in the present studies, and showed an interest on further studies on this matter.

Sorghum seed is traditionally used as health supplements and the secondary food mixed with rice in Korea. While the research of reserve protein in sorghum seed have been carried out in many countries used as major food, much less is known about reserve proteins of Korean local sorghum seeds. To obtain protein characteristics in 20 Korean local sorghum seed, quantitative content of reserve protein was determined after fractionation by modified 'Osbone' method and ${\alpha}$-kafirin of prolamin was determined by SDS-PAGE. Mean albumin, globulin, prolamin and glutelin contents based on total seed protein content of 20 Korean local sorghum seed were 6.2%, 0.9%, 57.9% and 35.1%, respectively. Sorghum cultivar with high prolamin were 'Whin-susu', 'Whin-Chalsusu', 'Whanggeum-Chalsusu', and 'Daepungshushu'. Sorghum cultivar with high ${\alpha}$-kafirin were 'Whin-susu', 'Geumsan-Chalsusu', 'Whin-Chalsusu', and 'Jangmok-susu'. Among the 20 varieties, 'Whin-susu' and 'Whin-Chalsusu' were selected as high ${\alpha}$-kafirin and prolamin sorghum cultivar, which showed 64.5 and 71.9% of prolamin contents, respectively.

The approval of use of certain food-grade phosphates as food additives in a wide variety of meat products greatly stimulated research on the applications of phosphates in foods. Although phosphates have never been classified as antimicrobial agents, a number of investigators have reported that phosphates have antimicrobial activities. Phytic acid is a natural plant inositol hexaphosphate constituting 1-5% of most cereals, nuts, legumes, oil seeds, pollen, and spores. In this study, we investigated antibacterial activities of sodium phytate (SPT), sodium pyrophosphate (SPP), sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) on Salmonella typhimurium in tryptic soy broth and in row meat media including chicken, pork and beef. SPY, SPP and STPP at the concentrations of 0.5 and 1% dose-dependently inhibited the growth of S. typhimurium in tryptic soy broth at various pHs. The antibacterial activities of SPT and STPP were the stronger than that of SPP. In chicken, pork, and beef, SPT, SPP and STPP at the concentrations of 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0% significantly inhibited the bacterial growth in a dose-dependant manner (p < 0.05). The antibacterial activities of SPT, SPP, and STPP were more effective in chicken than beef. SPT and STPP at the concentration of 1% reduced the bacterial count by about 2 log units. The addition of SPT, SPP and STPP at the concentration of 0.5% in meats increased the meat pHs by 0.28-0.48 units in chicken, pork, and beef. These results suggest that SPT and STPP were equally effective for the inhibition of bacterial growth both in TSB and meat media and that SPT can be used as an animal food additive for increasing shelf-life and functions of meats.
The potential of juglone a plant naphthoquinone as a natural herbicide on new target, 7-keto-8-amino pelargonic acid synthetase (KAPAS) in the early step of biotin biosynthesis pathway, was performed in vitro and in vivo. Juglone effectively inhibited KAPAS activities in vitro and the $IC_{50}$ was $9.5{\mu}M$. Foliar application of juglone showed very good herbicidal activity to the eight-tested weed species. Among them, Solanum nigrum was completely controlled at a concentration of $250{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ with main symptoms of desiccation or burndown. Digitaria sanguinalis and Aeschynomene indica were also sensitive to juglone treatment. All eight weed species were controlled by 90~100% at a concentration of $500{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$. However, soil application of juglone to Digitaria sanguinalis did not show any herbicidal symptoms. Cellular leakage from cucumber leaf squares treated with juglone increased depending on the concentrations increased from 6.25 to $100{\mu}M$ after 24 hours incubation with or without light. However, chlorophyll loss in cucumber leaf squares was negligible. Biotin supplements significantly rescued the inhibition of germination rate of Arabidopsis thaliana seeds previously inhibited by the juglone. Our results suggest that the juglone is a possible environmental friendly herbicide candidate with a new target KAPAS inhibiting activity.

Andaok, a new single cross variety, is a yellow dent maize hybrid (Zea mays L.) developed by the maize breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2011. This hybrid, which has a high yield of grain, was produced by crossing two inbred lines, KS161 and KS162. KS161 is the seed parent and KS162 is the pollen parent of Andaok. Silking date of Andaok is 3 days later than that of the check hybrid, Jangdaok. Plant height of Andaok is longer than that of Jangdaok. Ear numbers per 100 plants of Andaok is more than that of Jangdaok. Ear length of Andaok is shorter than that of Jangdaok. The weight of 100 seeds of Andaok is heavier than that of Jangdaok. It has moderate resistance to southern corn leaf blight (Bipolaris maydis), black streaked dwarf virus (BSDV) and corn borer. It has strong resistance to northern corn leaf blight (Exserohilum turcicum). It has resistance to lodging. Andaok was evaluated for its yield of grain at three locations from 2009 to 2011. The grain yield of Andaok was 7.80 ton/ha. Seed production of Andaok has gone well due to a good match during crossing between the seed parent, KS161, and the pollen parent, KS162, in Yeongwol.
