  • The Antarctica continent does not belong to any countries so that a place in the region has some different place names between countries. Korea gave Korean place names to the places around the King Sejong Station, and the names have since been used by Korean researchers on the Antarctic. However, they have yet to be registered officially at CGA(Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica) by November 2010. Therefore, to prepare for the possible disputes over territorial claims in Antarctica and to expand and specify activity areas, this research tries to analyze the present condition of advanced countries' committees on place names of Antarctica, their procedures of registering names and their registration criteria, and thereby suggest an efficient plan for registering place names of Antarctica. If the plan suggested in this research is actively reviewed and applied, it will be able to make a great contribution to advancing the place names of Antarctica and research on the Antarctic.

  • The named source kept in all place names alludes to the close relationship between place name and its place while it also becomes a fundamental condition for geographical research on place names. Meanwhile, the named source may be recognized differently according to who the social subjects producing and changing place names Life. Place names represent and constitute the identity and the ideology of the diverse social subjects. This aspect is related to cultural politics concerned with conflicts and contestation among different social subjects over the meaning of place names. Particularly, the Gongju-Mok Jingwan Area in the Korean peninsula has long history and geopolitical location as a borderland and a buffer zone. As a result, it has provided many conditions for cultural diversity and power relations, both of which have caused social subjects to contest their social power across space and time, and has led to produce the several types in the changes of place names. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the types according to the named source, especially that of the forepart of place names morpheme, and those cultural-political meanings. These place names are classified into three large groups, such as the physical place names, the social place names, and the economic place names. These types of place names have represented the place identity and the ideology of diverse social subjects, and also accompanied the changes by power relations between themselves.

  • Place names represent a lot of information about the region and the life of the local residents. In particular, old geographical names have more spatial informations than recent place names. This paper tried to analyze the distribution and characteristic of 'Dumo' which is one of the ancient place names and was studied by Nam youngwoo in 1996 for the first time. After considering the etymology and phonological structure of 'Dumo', the name 'Dumo' included the geographic conditions related to a mountain and river in itself. The total number of place names in the line of 'Dumo' which were collected by the author were 417 and they were distributed evenly on the Korean Peninsula. 85% of them were used for the human place names and 73% of the human place names were served as settlement names standing for a village or an administrative district. Thus the author analyzed the location and diffusion of 220 of settlement names in depth. As a result, villages named in the line of 'Dumo' preferred southern or eastern exposure and located in front of a mountain and around a river. After a village name 'Dumo' was set up, it produces other similar names in the line of 'Dumo' near the village so most place names of 'Dumo' were found with several names of 'Dumo' not alone.

  • Motivated by the finding that place names are highly capable of acting as one of the most conspicuous brands in the economy, this study has explored the essential nature of the brand value of place names and has suggested possible methodology to evaluate this value. As the place name brand has multidimensional elements mirroring the attributes of place, its understanding should be framed in terms both of users of place names as a subject and of place as an object. In order to evaluate the brand value of place names, the possibility of adopting the concept of customer-based brand equity, which is centered on the perception and assessment of customers, has been reviewed and more detailed items of evaluation have been addressed. A few future research topics are suggested: the nature of brand value; its relevance to place identity; the influence of place marketing; the significance of exposing place names to the public; the effect of geographic indication on brand value; delineating the spatial boundary of geographic indication items.

  • With recent rapid globalization, accurate information for the foreign countries is increasingly important. Errors based on inaccurate information and unequal international relationships complicate the situations. In this article, authors analyzed the Japanese place names which appear on the Google Earth images and place name database of the NGA. Google Earth already becomes a tremendous soft power in internet society; therefore, accurate information on the satellite image is more necessary than ever. This article finds that many types of errors exist in the place names in Google Earth image service. Also many place names are listed with Japanese pronunciation in GNS database as variants. The Japanese place names have not been used in topographic maps published since 1910s and 1930s. Japanese place names were widely used in US military maps published in 1946. 1:250,000 maps published in 1954, however, doesn't seem to use Japanese pronunciation any more.

  • This article aims to investigate the geographical distribution and the cultural, historical, and symbolic meanings of the place names in the area of Bukhansanseong (Fortress), and to basically suggest the several features which have happened throughout the process of toponymic changes. In order to realize the purpose of the article, I collected the chronological toponymic data, particularly focusing on the Bukhanji (Record of Bukhansanseong, 1745) in which the most existing place names related to Bukhansanseong are recorded. In the meantime, I proposed the character of distributions and types of the physical, human place names according to the rear-part of toponymic morpheme, i.e. the generic name. Moreover, selecting the main place names such as 'Bukhansan', etc., I analyzed some features on the toponymic meanings and changes in accordance with the fore-part of toponymic morpheme, the specific name. Consequently, I identified the facts that the name of 'Bukhansan' in the era of the Three Kingdoms, 'Samgaksan' in the Goryeo Dynasty, and again 'Bukhansan' or 'Buksan' in the Joseon Dynasty era had been primarily called. And then the place name, 'Bukhansan' has been officially named until now since constructing the Bukhansanseong Fortress in 1711. Meanwhile, the physical place names related to mountainous and fluvial topography, the place names of artificial facilities such as a mountain fortress on this geographical environment, and especially Buddhistic place names which was named and identified by Buddhist monk, Seongneung who wrote the Bukhanji, representing the Buddhistic identity and ideology, form a large majority of the place names within Bukhansanseong.

  • Historical origins of both personal names and place names in Korea are reviewed. It is shown that names of native origin have been largely replaced by those of Sino-Korean names. Some statistics are given on the basis of the 2000 census data in South Korea. A unique method of naming personal names which contain a generation marker called hangnyol is reviewed. This enables the person to figure out one's position and others in the family tree up to as many as ten generations without going consulting the book of genealogy. While this practice had a role to play in a vertically structured society where seniority is important, it is less practiced as the society is becoming more egalitarian, so that native names, not writable in Chinese characters, are on the rise. In this global age, a person is not just a member of his family or clan, s/he is also a member of the international community. The author proposes several things that should be considered in naming to fit the modern global age: euphony of names, ambiguity, possible bad connotations when Romanized, unintended homophones with comic meanings, etc.

  • Korean peninsula has a long history and a geopolitical location as a buffer tone, which has provided the conditions for cultural dynamism and diversity across space and time. The changing processes of place names in Korea is considered to be better suited to the study on cultural politics that is interested in the culture wars over the meaning of culture among different social subjects. In order to ensure the legitimacy of cultural politics for the study of place names in Korea, this study attempts to make a theoretical construction based on the concepts of place identity, territorial contestation, and the politics of scale. Cultural and linguistic theories to be best applied to the study of place names in Korea are the theories on Angehm's and Castells' identity, $P{\hat{e}}cheux's$ identification, Hall's decoding, and Voloshinov's ideological sign. Power relations involved in the inclusion and exclusion are necessarily concerned with the process of constructing a place identity or territorial identity by means of a place name, which represents identity and ideology of a social subject. In the examination of this process, it is necessary to take the elements of identity, ideology and power relations into consideration. In this study, therefore, the politics of scale is experimented for its applicability in the study of place name in Korea, which is expected to accommodate concepts of boundary, territory, territoriality and territorialization. In the end, it is suggested in this study that a series of basic and interdisciplinary studies on the cultural politics of place names in a range of area should be undertaken along with the enough theoretical knowledge of cultural politics.
