  • A few studies have shown that the function of fusiform face area is selectively involved in the perception of faces including a race difference. We investigated the neural substrates of the face-selective region called fusiform face area In the ventral occipital-temporal cortex and same-race memory superiority In the fusiform face area by the event-related fMRI. In our fMRI study, twelve healthy subjects (Oriental-Korean) performed the implicit distinction of the race while they consciously made familiar-judgments, regardless of whether they considered a face as Oriental-Korean or European-American. In the race distinction as an implicit task, the fusiform face areas (FFA) and the right parahippocampal gyrus had a greater response to the presentation of Oriental-Korean than European-American faces, but in the consciously race distinction between Oriental-Korean and European-American faces, any significant difference in the FFA was not observed. These results suggest that different activation in the fusiform regions and right parahippocampal gyrus resulting from same-race memory superiority could be implicitly taken place by the physiological processes of face recognition.

  • This study aims to analyze the design concepts of Libeskind's Jewish museums through their comparisons for figuring out his design intentions and characteristics in the realization process. Libeskind's realized four Jewish museums are chosen for this study. For more concrete study, their extracting and application process are also reviewed. The comparison of his museum designs can be good examples in that they show different design approaches on the same architectural type, Jewish museum, to tell their something in common from differences. He could realize his architectural thoughts and configuration methods made by experimental drawings for the first time as real buildings through a series of Jewish museum projects. The commonness of Libeskind's Jewish museums lie on their sharing design concept of Jewish 'history and memory', especially Holocaust, and realized as in contrast to surroundings and 'labyrinth' of spatial configuration to maximize spectator's experiences. As Libeskind regards museum architecture as a carrier of 'time and place', he tried to reflect surrounding context including places, cities, persons and events about museum programs. As a result, unprecedented museums which are not related to traditional museum systems about circulation and spatial configuration are suggested for users to experience Jewish life and history through architecture.

  • The emerging Spin-Transfer Torque RAM (STT-RAM) is a promising component that can be used to improve the efficiency as a result of its high storage density and low leakage power. However, the state-of-the-art STT-RAM is not ready to replace SRAM technology due to the negative effect of its write operations. The write operations require longer latency and more power than the same operations in SRAM. Therefore, a hybrid cache with SRAM and STT-RAM technologies is proposed to obtain the benefits of STT-RAM while minimizing its negative effects by using SRAM. To efficiently use of the hybrid cache, it is important to place write intensive data onto the cache. Such data should be placed on SRAM to minimize the negative effect. Thus, we propose a technique that optimizes placement of data in main memory. It drives the proper combination of advantages and disadvantages for SRAM and STT-RAM in the hybrid cache. As a result of the proposed technique, write intensive data are loaded to SRAM and read intensive data are loaded to STT-RAM. In addition, our technique also optimizes temporal locality to minimize conflict misses. Therefore, it improves performance and energy consumption of the hybrid cache architecture in a certain range.

  • Cherishing the dead is based in sadness. Designing a memorial space therefore has an inherent challenge to evoke the feeling that is so personal and varied by providing a physical space. The tendency of memorials, especially in the US after the mid 20th century, has been to emphasis each dead individual, as seen at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D. C., the Oklahoma City National Memorial in Oklahoma City, and so forth. In the process of designing the memorial of the Taiwanese Chi-chi earth-quake, Cheng Kim Park Robidoux tried to set up a series of spaces through which not only the relatives of the dead but also unrelated visitors could have their own spatial experiences, private rituals and public events, so that they can finally build up a collective memory. Sky-Well consists of a large bamboo forest enclosing a void. Without a particular entrance and guiding system, visitors stroll and get lost in the bamboo forest before they find the central void. The horror they experienced during the earthquake is melted down into the motion and phenomenology of the bamboo forest whereas the central void is reinterpreted as an empty mind, where people find solace from the sky. Details, such as the bamboo wall to place commemorative flowers and lotus blossom paving, are echoing the theme of rebirth.

  • In this paper, we present a comcurrency control scheme over the index structure in main memory databases using multiversion mechanism, and implement it on T-tree. As a well-known idea for comcurrency control, multiversion allows multiple transactions to reat and write different versions of the same data item, each transaction sees a consistent set of versions for all the data items it accesses[1]. Logical versioning and physical versioning techniques are used to keep versions of data item and versions of index node respectively. The main features of this multiversion indexing approach are (1)update operations and rotations on T-tree can take place concurrently, (2)the number of locking and latching requirement is sharply reduced because read-only transactions do not obtain any locks or latches and update transactions obtain latches only when actually performing the update, (3)it reduces storage overhead for tracking version and reclaims storage in time, and (4)it provides complete isolation of read-only transactions from update transactions, so the read-only transactions can get response information without any block.

  • This paper presents a solution of the 'Quick, Draw! Doodle Recognition Challenge' hosted by Google. Doodles are drawings comprised of concrete representational meaning or abstract lines creatively expressed by individuals. In this challenge, a doodle is presented as a sequence of sketches. From the view of at the sketch level, to learn the pattern of strokes representing a doodle, we propose a sequential model stacked with multiple convolution layers and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) cells following the attention mechanism [15]. From the view at the image level, we use multiple models pre-trained on ImageNet to recognize the doodle. Finally, an ensemble and a post-processing method using the minimum cost flow algorithm are introduced to combine multiple models in achieving better results. In this challenge, our solutions garnered 11th place among 1,316 teams. Our performance was 0.95037 MAP@3, only 0.4% lower than the winner. It demonstrates that our method is very competitive. The source code for this competition is published at: https://github.com/ngxbac/Kaggle-QuickDraw.

  • With the advent of flash memory based new storage device (SSD), there is considerable interest within the computer industry in using flash memory based storage devices for many different types of application. The dynamic index structure of large text collections has been a primary issue in the Information Retrieval Applications among them. Previous studies have proven the three approaches to be effective: In- Place, merge-based index structure and a combination of both. The above-mentioned strategies have been researched with the traditional storage device (HDD) which has a constraint on how keep the contiguity of dynamic data. However, in case of the new storage device, we don' have any constraint contiguity problems due to its low access latency time. But, although the new storage device has superiority such as low access latency and improved I/O throughput speeds, it is still not well suited for traditional dynamic index structures because of the poor random write throughput in practical systems. Therefore, using the experimental performance evaluation of various index maintenance schemes on the new storage device, we propose an efficient index structure for new storage device that improves significantly the index maintenance speed without degradation of query performance.

  • Using biometrics to verify a person's identity has several advantages over the present practice of personal identification numbers (PINs) and passwords. To gain maximum security in a verification system using biometrics, the computation of the verification as well as the storing of the biometric pattern has to take place in a smart card. However, there is an open issue of integrating biometrics into a smart card because of its limited resources (processing power and memory space). In this paper, we propose a speaker verification algorithm using a support vector machine (SVM) with a very few features, and implemented it on a 32-bit smart card. The proposed algorithm can reduce the required memory space by a factor of more than 100 and can be executed in real-time. Also, we propose a hardware design for the algorithm on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based platform. Based on the experimental results, our SVM solution can provide superior performance over typical speaker verification solutions. Furthermore, our FPGA-based solution can achieve a speed-up of 50 times over a software-based solution.
