  • The mooring line tension and motion response of a floating fish reef system were analyzed using a Morison equation type numerical model. The reef structure was constructed with pipe and suspended up from the bottom with a single, high tension mooring. Input forcing parameters into the model consisted of both regular and random waves, with and without currents. Heave, surge and pitch dynamic calculations were made, along with the tension response in the mooring lines. Results were analyzed in both the time and frequency domains and where appropriate, linear transfer functions were calculated. In addition, damped and natural periods of the system were determined to examine a resonating situation.

  • A flip-chip bonding system using DPSS(Diode Pumped Solid State) Nd:YAG laser(wavelength : 1064nm) which shows a good quality in fine pitch bonding is developed. This laser bonder can transfer beam energy to the solder directly and melt it without any physical contact by scanning a bare chip. By using a laser source to heat up the solder balls directly, it can reduce heat loss and any defects such as bridge with adjacent solder, overheating problems, and chip breakage. Comparing to conventional flip-chip bonders, the bonding time can be shortened drastically. This laser precision micro bonder can be applied to flip-chip bonding with many advantage in comparison with conventional ones.

  • Thin glass (< 100 microns) is a promising material from which advanced interposers for high density electrical interconnects for 2.5D chip packaging can be produced. But thin glass is extremely brittle, so mechanical micromachining to create through glass vias (TGVs) is particularly challenging. In this article we show how laser processing using deep UV excimer lasers at a wavelength of 193 nm provides a viable solution capable of drilling dense patterns of TGVs with high hole counts. Based on mask illumination, this method supports parallel drilling of up over 1,000 through vias in 30 to $100{\mu}m$ thin glass sheets. (We also briefly discuss that ultrafast lasers are an excellent alternative for laser drilling of TGVs at lower pattern densities.) We present data showing that this process can deliver the requisite hole quality and can readily achieve future-proof TGV diameters as small $10{\mu}m$ together with a corresponding reduction in pitch size.

  • We developed a new type of human-sized BWR (biped walking robot) driven by a new actuator based on the ball screw which has high strength and high gear ratio. Each leg of the robot is composed of three pitch joints and one roll joint. In all, a 10 degree-of-freedom robot with two balancing joints was developed. A new type of actuator for the robot is proposed, which is composed of four bar link mechanism driven by the ball screw. The robot overcomes the limit of the driving torque of conventional BWRs. The BWR was designed to walk autonomously by adapting small DC motors for the robot actuators and has a space to board DC battery and controllers. In the performance test, the BWR performed sitting-up and down motion, and walking motion. Through the test, we found the possibility of a high performance biped-walking.

  • Many studies have been conducted to increase regression rate of solid fuel in hybrid rocket. One of them resorts to swirl flow since it can extend the residence time of oxidizer in the fuel grain. Also, metal wires may lead to increase the regression rate of solid fuel as shown in solid propellants. In this study, a series of experiments was designed to investigate the enhancement of regression rate of solid fuel by embedded metal wires and by fuel port grain. And fuel port was designed with a helical configuration to attempt to induce swirl flow. PMMA with gaseous oxygen is the solid fuel used for investigation. Test results showed that embedded metal wires turned out to be ineffective method because only $3-4\%$ increases in regression rate were observed. However, fuel port grain configuration yields higher burning performance of up to $50\%$ increase in regression rate. Also pitch number as well as total impulse was found to be a design variable.

  • In this study, a new simplified technology for fabricating high density trench gate DMOSFETs using only three mask layers and TEOS/nitride spacer is proposed. Due to the reduced masking steps and self-aligned process, this technique can afford to fabricate DMOSFETs with high cell density up to 100 Mcell/inch$^2$ and cost-effective production. The resulting unit cell pitch was 2.3∼2.4${\mu}$m. The fabricated device exhibited a excellent specific on-resistance characteristic of 0.36m$\Omega$. cm$^2$ with a breakdown voltage of 42V. Moreover, time to breakdown of gate oxide was remarkably increased by the hydrogen annealing after trench etching.

  • To evaluate the aerodynamic efficiency of TR-S4 configuration, wind tunnel tests of 40% scaled model were done in KARI LSWT. TR-S4 configuration has different nacelle shape, larger EO/IR camera and aftward wing location compared with TR-S2. Component build-up test after adding each element of model is performed. Also effects of horizontal tail incidences, Flaperon and Aileron deflection. on aerodynamic characteristics are measured. Test results showed that TR-S4 configuration has favorable stability characteristics in longitudinal, lateral and directional for the pitch and yaw motions.

  • The collision avoidance maneuver flight simulation for tilt rotor unmanned aerial vehicle was performed by time-accurate numerical integration method based on wind tunnel test data. Five representative collision avoidance maneuvers were simulated under constraints of aerodynamic stall, propulsion power, structural load, and control actuator capability. The collision avoidance performances of the maneuvers were compared by the computed collision avoidance times. The sensitivities of initial flight speed and collision zone shape on the collision avoidance time were investigated. From these results, it was found that the moderate pull-up turn maneuver defined using moderate pitch and maximum roll controls within simulation constraints is the most robust and efficient collision avoidance maneuver under the various flight speeds and collision object shapes in the tilt rotor UAV applications.
