  • Among many auditory feelings for the vehicle interior noise, booming is considered as the most important nuisance to the passenger and developer. Because the main source of booming noise is a power train system including engine, in general, it consists of tonal components related to fundamental engine rotation and its harmonics including the firing frequency. Therefore, it is demanded to extract the effective tonal components only by using pitch extraction algorithm based on the place theory enable to find aurally relevant tonal components. However, there is a difference between booming sensation and pitch perception according to frequency change of tonal component. In this study, subjective listening test using a tracking method was performed to find the difference limen for just noticeable change of booming sensation in frequency. 20 Koreans and 10 Japanese were participated in this test and the results obtained from Koreans and Japanese were compared with each other. Finally, 5Hz was determined as the difference limen for just noticeable change of booming sensation in frequency, and by applying this value to booming analysis using pitch concept, it was confirmed that the degree of prediction of booming sensation was improved.

  • This paper presents the analysis of pitch static attitude (PSA) in thermally assisted magnetic recording (TAMR) suspension. The TAMR suspension using an optical fiber has high stiffness such as vertical, pitch and roll. Therefore, P-torque is greatly increased by the optical fiber. Also, flying height (FH) of the slider with TAMR suspension can be largely changed by PSA. In this paper, we focus on the FH by PSA of TAMR suspension. The FH is investigated using various PSA and proper PSA is proposed.

  • The pitch estimation algorithms witch have proposed until now are difficult to detect wide range pitches regardless of age or sex. A little deviation are observed with reference to the center pitch in the distribution diagram of pitches, since pitches are characterized by a physical limitation of the coarticulation mechanism. If the center pitches are refered to the accurate pitch extraction procedure, the algorithms will be not only simplified in procedure but also improved in accuracy. In this paper, we proposed an algorithm that the center pitches are accurately detected by using the spectrum leakage phenomenon for the noise speech signals.

  • The study described in this paper is aimed to maintain a constant output of wind turbine system via pitch control of wind turbine using Advanced PID(APID) controller. In order to improve dynamic response characteristic in terms of pitch angle and disturbance reject, the APID controller is developed. The structure of the APID is composed with derivative P controller and new type of integral control action. This new improved integral control has concept of error window and weight function concept. The performance of the APID control technique is compared with those of conventional ones via simulation. Simulation results show that the proposed method is effective and enhanced the dynamic performance of the system.

  • In this paper, a new pitch beginning point detection method by extracting the G-peak, is proposed. By the speech production model, the area of the first peak on a pitch interval of speech signals is emphasized. By using the above characteristics, this method have more advantages than the others for pitch beginning point detection. The defective decision caused by an impulsive noise is minimized and the pre-filtering is not necessary for this method, because the integration of signals takes place in the process.

  • We propose a robust non-speech rejection algorithm using the three types of pitch-related parameters. The robust non-speech rejection algorithm utilizes three kinds of pitch parameters : (1) pitch range, (2) difference of the successive pitch range, and (3) the number of successive pitches satisfying constraints related with the previous two parameters. The acceptance rate of the speech commands was 95% for -2.8dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) speech database that consisted of 2440 utterances. The rejection rate of the non-speech sounds was 100% while the acceptance rate of the speech commands was 97% in an office environment.

  • The previous work(Cheong et al., 2006) where the characteristics of acoustic emissions of wind turbines has been investigated according to the methods of power regulation, has showed that the acoustic power of wind turbine using the stall control for power regulation is more correlated with the wind speed than that using the pitch control. In this paper, basically extending this work, the noise generation characteristics of large modern upwind wind turbines are experimentally indentified according to the power regulation methods. To investigate the noise generation mechanisms, the distribution of noise sources in the rotor plane is measured by using the beam-forming measurement system(B&K 7768, 7752, WA0890) consisting of 48 microphones. The array results for the 660 kW wind turbine show that all noise is produced during the downward movement of the blades. This result show good agreement with the theoretical result using the empirical formula with the parameters: the convective amplification; trailing edge noise directivity; flow-speed dependence. This agreement implies that the trailing edge noise is dominant over the whole frequency range of the noise from the 660 kW wind turbine using the pitch control for power regulation.

  • This study investigates the acoustic-phonetic features and speech intelligibility of Lombard speech in children with intellectual disability, by examining the effect of Lombard speech at 3 levels of non-noise, 55dB, and 65dB. Eight children with intellectual disability read sentences and played speaking games, and their speech were analyzed in terms of intensity, pitch, vowel space of /a/, /i/, and /u/, VAI(3), articulation rate and speech intelligibility. Results showed, first, that intensity and pitch increased as noise level increased; second, that VAI(3) increased as the noise level increased; third, that articulation rate decreased as noise intensity increased; finally, that speech intelligibility increased as noise intensity increased. The Lombard speech changed the VAI(3), vowel space, articulation rate, speech intelligibility of the children with intellectual disability as well. This study suggests that the Lombard speech will be clinically useful for the persons who have intellectual disability and difficulties in self-control.
