  • This study was carried out as a part of the research on the development of a maskless and electroless process for fabricating metal micro/nanostructures by using a nanoindenter and an electroless deposition technique. $2-\mu{m}-deep$ indentation tests on Ni and Cu samples were performed. The elastic recovery of the Ni and Cu was 9.30% and 9.53% of the maximum penetration depth, respectively. The hardness and the elastic modulus were 1.56 GPa and 120 GPa for Ni and 1.49 GPa and 100 GPa for Cu. The effect of single-point diamond machining conditions such as the Berkovich tip orientation (0, 45, and $90^{\circ}$) and the normal load (0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1, 3, and 5 mN), on both the deformation behavior and the morphology of cutting traces (such as width and depth) was investigated by constant-load scratch tests. The tip orientation had a significant influence on the coefficient of friction, which varied from 0.52-0.66 for Ni and from 0.46-0.61 for Cu. The crisscross-pattern sample showed that the tip orientation strongly affects the surface quality of the machined area during scratching. A selective deposition of Cu at the pit-like defect on a p-type Si(111) surface was also investigated. Preferential deposition of the Cu occurred at the surface defect sites of silicon wafers, indicating that those defect sites act as active sites for the deposition reaction. The shape of the Cu-deposited area was almost the same as that of the residual stress field.

  • When rocks are exposed to the near surface environment, they are broken down due to several factors such as physical and chemical weathering during the geologic time. The feldspar and mica, which are the main rock-forming minerals, are easily broken down relative to other minerals. In order to reproduce some weathered minerals similar to the ones exist in natural weathered granite, there was an experimental interaction between fresh minerals and acidic solution. In low pH condition, biotite initially dissolved and its surface structure broke down, whereas plagioclase dissolved and had a needle-shaped dissolved morphology with some precipitates composed of Al element. The minerals were deeply dissolved in a strong acid condition, showing the prominent dissolved structure. Some etch pits and dissolved textures developed on the natural mineral surfaces are similarly found in our experiment, suggesting the development of mineral dissolution and weathering texture by the influence of the mineral's intrinsic nature.

  • Various sealing techniques were applied to the anodized 5083 aluminum alloy for marine environment to reduce corrosion and cavitation erosion damage. Electrochemical experiments and cavitation erosion tests were conducted to evaluate the corrosion resistance and cavitation resistance of the anodic oxide film treated with sealing in natural seawater solution. Then, damaged surface morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscope(SEM) and 3D microscope. As the results of the electrochemical experiments, it was observed that the surface damage of all the experimental conditions in the anodic polarization experiment was locally grown by the combination of crack and corrosion damage. In the Tafel analysis, the corrosion resistance of all sealing treatment conditions was improved compared to the anodizing. On the other hand, cavitation erosion tests showed that the anodizing and all the sealing treatment conditions generated local pit damage by cavitation erosion attack and grew to crater damage in the observation of damaged surface by SEM. Also, the weight loss and the surface damage depth measured with the experiment time presented that most of the sealing treatment conditions showed better cavitation erosion resistance than the anodizing, and they had an incubation period at the beginning of the experiment.

  • Gymnophallid metacercariae found in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum ('Banjirak' in Korean) from Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea were morphologically and molecularly confirmed to be Parvatrema duboisi (Dollfus, 1923) Bartoli, 1974. The metacercariae were morphologically characterized by having a large oral sucker, small ventral sucker, genital pore some distance anterior to the ventral sucker, no ventral pit, and 1 compact or slightly lobed vitellarium, which were all compatible with P. duboisi. Some of the metacercariae were experimentally fed to mice, and adult flukes were recovered at day 7 post-infection. The morphology of the adult flukes was basically the same as that of the metacercariae except for the presence of uterine eggs; the uterus was filled with up to 40 eggs. The nucleotide sequences (1,193 bp) from ITS regions (ITS1, 5.8S rDNA, and ITS2) of the metacercariae showed 99.7% identity with P. duboisi and 75.7% identity with Gymnophalloides seoi deposited in GenBank. These results confirmed the presence of P. duboisi metacercariae in the Manila clam R. philippinarum in an estuary region of Gochang-gun, Korea.

  • In this study, we investigated the growth of single-crystallinity α-Ga2O3 thin films on c-plane sapphire substrates using halide vapor pressure epitaxy. We also found the optimal growth conditions to suppress the phase transition of α-Ga2O3. Our results confirmed that the growth temperature and partial pressure of the reactive gas greatly influenced the crystallinity. The optimal growth temperature range was about 460~510℃, and the α-Ga2O3 thin films with the highest crystallinity were obtained at a III/VI ratio of 4. The thickness and surface morphology of the thin films was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The film thickness was 6.938 ㎛, and the full width at half maximum of the ω-2θ scan rocking curve was as small as 178 arcsec. The optical band gap energy obtained was 5.21 eV, and the films were almost completely transparent in the near-ultraviolet and visible regions. The etch pit density was found to be as low as about 6.0 × 104 cm-2.

  • KAERI Underground Research Tunnel (KURT) was recently constructed through the site investigation from the yea. of 2003 at KAERI site, Dukjin-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon city. The geo-logic setting of the site has been slightly metamorphosed. There are small fractures developed in the rock and several kinds of secondary filling minerals exist in the fractures. We examined mineralogical characteristics of fracture-filling calcite, which is not only largely distributed, but also can significantly affect the radionuclides migration. The calcite is found along fractures like other secondary minerals, forming thick veins in part. Most calcite-filled fractures contain quartz, iron oxides, and dolomite as minor minerals. The calcite crystals show an characteristic appearance with an uniformly oriented growth, coated with goethite on the edge and the etch-pit sites of their surface. Some calcite crystals have been newly formed by the precipitation of elements dissolved from the tunnel shotcrete wall, and their morphology changed according to the chemistry and flow of groundwater. The calcite can modify the groundwater chemistry and significantly affect the sorption behavior of radionuclides. The characteristic crystal structure and surface morphology of the calcite examined in the KURT site will be used as important basic data for the radionuclide migration experiment in the future.

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate the morphology and the size of permanent maxillary molar in Korean Adult. The 100 dental college students with a normal dentition and without any dental prosthesis and severe caries were selected for this study. The subjects were taken impression to make study model. On the study model, authour three times measured those sizes and estimated morphological structures with a calipers, a Boley gauge and a protractor. The results were as follows; 1. In the maxilary first molar's clinical crown height, mesiolingual cusp height was 6.34mm, mesiobuccal cusp height was 6.05mm, distobuccal cusp height was 5.20mm. And in the maxillary second molar's clinical crown height, mesiobuccal cusp height was 5.85mm, mesiolingual cusp height was 5.71mm, distobuccal cusp height was 5.51mm, distolingual cusp height was 3.53mm. This result considered that the maxillary first molar inclined to distobuccal, and the maxillary second molar more upright than the maxillary first molar. 2. In the width of clinical crown, the maxillary first molar was 10.43mm, the maxillary second molar was 10.20mm, and the difference between the first molar's width and the second molar's width was 0.23mm. 3. The crown thickness was measured divided into mesial buccolingual half and distal buccolingual half. The mesial buccolingual half was 11.14mm, and distal buccolingual half was 10.35mm in the maxillary first molar, and in the maxilary second molar, mesial buccolingual half was 11.25mm, and distal buccolingual half was 9.72mm. This result considered that height of convergency located in mesial half of crown. 4. In the buccal groove length, total length and ratio, the maxillary first molar was 52.5%, the maxillary second molar was 50%. And the development of buccal groove in the maxillary first molar was 59% in case of the well developed buccal groove and 41% in case of the weak developed one. And frequency of buccal pit of the maxillary first molar was 12.5%. Whereas, the frequency of buccal of the well developed buccal groove in the maxillary second molar was 37% and that of the weak developed one was 63%. And frequency of buccal pit of the maxillary second molar was not seen. 5. The 3 cusp type tooth cannot be found in the maxillary first molar and the frequency of 3 cusp type tooth in the maxillary second molar was as small as 6% 6. In the case of 4 cusp type tooth, the size of distal lingual cusp molar was difference between in the maxillary first molar and in the maxillary second molar by about 1mm. 7. The intercuspal distance was similar in the maxillary first premolar and second molar. And intercuspal distanc of mesial half of the maxillary first molar and the maxillary second molar was silmillar, too. 8. The an measurement of occlusal surface in 4 cusp type tooth showed that the angle of occlusal surface between the distobuccal and mesiolingual was an obtuse angle, and the angle of occlusal surface between mesiobuccal and distolingual was an acute angle in the both cases of maxillary first and second molar. 9. The measurements of the development of Carabelli cusp showed that the frequency of the well developed one was 7% and that of the weak developed one was 56% in the maxillary first molar. And there cannot be found the well developed one and can be found 2.5% only in the case of the weak developed one in the maxillary second molar. 10. The well developed oblique ridge in the maxillary first molar showed the 100% frequency and that in the maxillary second molar showed the 85.5% frequency. The frequency of mesiomarginal ridge tubercle in the maxillary first molar was 82% and that in the maxillary second molar was 30.5%. And the frequency of distal accessory tubercle in the maxillary first molar can be seen about 19% and that in the maxillary second molar can be seen about 12%.

  • Titanium and its alloy have been widely used in dental implant and orthopedic prostheses. Electrochemical characteristics of dental implant in the various simulated body fluids have been researched by using electrochemical methods. Ti-6Al-4V alloy implant was used for corrosion test in 0.9% NaCl, artificial saliva and simulated body fluids. The surface morphology was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The electrochemical stability was investigated using potentiosat (EG&G Co, 263A). The corrosion surface was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From the results of potentiodynamic test in various solution, the current density of implant tested in SBF and AS solution was lower than that of implant tested in 0.9% NaCl solution. From the results of passive film stability test, the variation of current density at constant 250 mV showed the consistent with time in the case of implant tested in SBF and AS solution, whereas, the current density at constant 250mV in the case of implant tested in 0.9% NaCl solution showed higher compared to SBF and AS solution as time increased. From the results of cyclic potentiodynamic test, the pitting potential and |$E_{pit}\;-\;E_{corr}$| of implant tested in SBF and AS solution were higher than those of implant tested in 0.9% NaCl solution.
