  • Difficulties associated with full-scale pipe tests are rather obvious. That is, it is not only difficult to perform them but also very expensive and it requires lots of experience. And the process of the fracture test for the pipe specimen is very difficult and complicated. Because the pipe specimen, the test jig and the test equipment are very large and heavy, it requires lots of costs and times. In this study, to easily perform the fracture toughness test for a pipe specimen, load line displacement data was obtained using the image processing method.

  • The seat leakage test is required after the maintenance work on the valve seat. Either the test has been performed outside of the plant after cutting the valve from the pipe system or the simplified test has been performed so far. It was unable to perform the test at the plant site because it is hard to make a steady pressure on the valve inlet when it is installed in the pipe. This research aims to perform the leakage test in the nuclear power plant while it is installed in the pipe system. The mock-up test is performed by pressurizing the leak-off pipe on the valve body. The result is compared with traditional test result by pressurizing the valve inlet. Furthermore the chamber mock-up tests are performed under various conditions. The leak rate by the developed test using the leak-off pipe is found to be similar but greater than the leak rate by the existing test method. It implies that the test using the leak-off pipe is more conservative than the existing test. The methodology and the equipment which this paper suggests that on-site seat test is possible and the application of the technology could reduce the time and cost for the valve maintenance work significantly.

  • In this paper, we present the result of an investigation pertaining to the pipe stiffness of buried flexible pipes. Pipe stiffness (PS) formula for the parallel plate loading condition is derived based on the elasticity theory. Vertical and horizontal displacements are also derived. Vertical deflection is always larger than the horizontal deflection because some of energy due to overburden load is stored in the pipe but the difference is negligibly small. In the study, mechanical properties of the flexible pipes produced in the domestic manufacturer are tested and the results are reported in this paper. In addition, pipe stiffness is determined by the parallel plate loading tests and the finite element analysis. The difference between test and analysis is less than 14% although there are significant variations in the mechanical properties of the pipe material. Therefore, it was found that the finite element analysis can be used to predict the pipe stiffness instead of conducting parallel plate loading test.

  • Pipe jacking is a name for a method to excavate a tunnel by pushing pipe into the ground from an especial pit. Size of tunnels in this method is different from under 900mm (microtunneling) to more than 3,000mm. Method of excavation is also different from hand digging to use of any kind of tunnel boring machines such as slurry and earth pressure balance (EPB) machines. Slurry pipe jacking was firmly established as a special method for the nondisruptive construction of the underground tunnels in urban area. During the pipe jacking and microtunneling process, the jacking load is an important parameter, controlling the pipe wall thickness, need to and location of intermediate jacking station, selection of jacking frame and lubrication requirements. The main component of the jacking load is due to frictional resistance. In this paper the skin friction between pipe surface and surrounding condition also lubricant quality based on a few fundamental tests, were considered. During this study unconfined compressive strength test, dynamic friction measurement test and direct shear box test were raised for one of the largest diameter slurry pipe jacking project in Fujisawa city in Japan. It could be concluded that in slurry pipe jacking, prediction of frictional forces are mainly dependent on successful lubrication, its quality and lubricant strength parameters. Conclusions from this study can be used for the same experiences.

  • This paper aims at providing insights on the use of thermosetting liner for the repair of offshore pipelines exposed to corrosion and leakage. The work which covers both experimental and numerical approaches were aspired due to the high cost of repair for pipelines, limitations of thermoplastic material and limited study of reinforced thermosetting liner. The experiment involves a destruction test called the burst test, carried out on an API 5L X42 carbon steel pipe under four case studies, namely (i) intact pipe, (ii) pipe with corrosion defect, (iii) pipe with corrosion defect and repaired with thermosetting liner and (iv) pipe with leakage and repaired with thermosetting liner. The numerical simulation was developed to first validate the experimental results and later to optimize the design of the thermosetting liner in terms of the number of layers required to restore the original strength of the pipe. The burst test shows an improvement in 23% of the burst capacity for the pipe with corrosion defects, after being repaired with a three-layer thermosetting liner. The parametric studies conducted showed that with an addition of thermosetting layers, the burst capacity improves by an average of 1.85 MPa. In conclusions, the improvement in strength can be further increased with increasing thickness of the thermosetting liner. The thermosetting liner was also determined to fail first inside the host pipe.

  • The industrialization and urbanization forced to increase the density of pipelines such as water supply, sewers, and gas pipelines. The materials used for the existing pipe lines are mostly composed of concretes and steels, but it is true that the development for more durable and efficient materials has been continued performed to produce long lasting pipe lines. Recently, underground pipes serve in diverse applications such as sewer lines, drain lines, water mains, gas lines, telephone and electrical conduits, culverts, oil lines, etc. In this paper, we present the result of investigation pertaining to the structural behavior of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) flexible pipes buried underground. In the investigation of structural behavior such as a ring deflection, pipe stiffness, 4-point bending test, experimental and analytical studies are conducted. In addition, pipe stiffness is determined by the parallel plate loading tests and the finite element analysis. The difference between test and analysis is about 8% although there are significant variations in the mechanical properties of the pipe material. In addition, it was found by the 4-point bending test there is no problem in the connection between the pipes by coupler.

  • In this study, small punch test and tensile test were performed with specimens directly machined from an ASTM A53 grade B carbon steel pipe at which an explosion accident was occurred in the Heavy Oil Unit. Main damage mechanism of the pipe was known as a high temperature hydrogen attack(HTHA). Effects of HTHA on the mechanical strength change of the A53B steel were studied in detail. Small punch test results have showed that maximum reaction forces, SP energy and ductility were decreased at hydrogen attacked part of the pipe compared with sound part of the pipe. Yield strength and tensile ultimate strength were calculated with the obtained small punch test curve results using different methods and compared the estimation methods. Small punch test simulation has been also performed with the finite element method and then mechanical strength, equivalent strain and fracture toughness were calculated with the obtained numerical analysis results. It was shown that the fracture toughness data calculated from small punch equivalent energy obtained by the finite element analysis for SP test was very low at the hydrogen attacked part.

  • In order to monitor the pipe thinning caused by flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) that occurs in coolant piping systems, a shear horizontal ultrasonic pitch-catch waveguide technique was developed for accurate pipe wall thickness monitoring. A clamping device for dry coupling contact between the end of the waveguide and pipe surface was designed and fabricated. A computer program for multi-channel on-line monitoring of the pipe thickness at high temperature was also developed. Both a four-channel buffer rod pulse-echo type and a shear horizontal ultrasonic waveguide type for high-temperature thickness monitoring system were successfully installed to the test section of the FAC proof test facility. The overall measurement error can be estimated as ${\pm}10{\mu}m$ during a cycle from room temperature to $200^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, a fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) pipe with superior wear resistance was developed to replace the fly ash pipe of cast iron. Wear test was performed with various combinations of SiC filler and resin materials of unsaturated polyester, vinylester, epoxy, and phenol. Test results of ASTM D4060 showed the optimal combinations of resin, filler size, and resin/filler ratios. Test results of comparison between FRP and cast iron showed the possibility to replace cast iron pipe with the FRP pipe. Field test executed to compare the wear resistance between cast iron pipe and developed FRP pipe showed the superiority of the FRP pipe.
