갈색부후목재(褐色腐朽木材)의 X선(線) 회절(回折) 및 IR 분석(分析) (X-Ray Diffractional and IR Spectral Characteristics in Brown-Rotted Woods Decayed by T. palustris and G. trabeum)

  • Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora S. et. Z.) decayed by brown-rot fungi Tyromyces palustris and Gloeophyllum trabeum were subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis and infrared spectral examinations. Pine woods decayed by T. palustris showed the increase of relative crystallinity in the initial stage of degradation. When the weight loss was above 30%, then the crystallinity went down slowly. In contrast, the wood samples degraded by G. trabeum showed the decrease of crystallinity from the beginning stage of decay. The changes of crystallinity in brown-rotted woods suggested that the degradation rate of crystalline cellulose was varied with the brown rot fungal species. X-ray diffraction analyses also indicated that crystalline cellulose was much more slowly broken down than the amorphous one. The most notable difference in the IR spectra of the brown-rotted wood samples was that the adsorption band centered at 1,730$cm^{-1}$ was significantly diminished in the decayed wood. indicating the degradation of hemicellulose by brown-rot fungi. However, no marked changes of intensities at 1,000, 1,060 and 1,040$cm^{-1}$ were observed in the brown rotted wood samples, suggesting that crystal line cellulose was resistant against the attack by brown rot fungi.

Partial Least Squares Analysis on Near-Infrared Absorbance Spectra by Air-dried Specific Gravity of Major Domestic Softwood Species

  • Research on the rapid and accurate prediction of physical properties of wood using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has attracted recent attention. In this study, partial least squares analysis was performed between NIR spectra and air-dried specific gravity of five domestic conifer species including larch (Larix kaempferi), Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis), red pine (Pinus densiflora), cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), and cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa). Fifty different lumbers per species were purchased from the five National Forestry Cooperative Federations of Korea. The air-dried specific gravity of 100 knot- and defect-free specimens of each species was determined by NIR spectroscopy in the range of 680-2500 nm. Spectral data preprocessing including standard normal variate, detrend and forward first derivative (gap size = 8, smoothing = 8) were applied to all the NIR spectra of the specimens. Partial least squares analysis including cross-validation (five groups) was performed with the air-dried specific gravity and NIR spectra. When the performance of the regression model was expressed as $R^2$ (coefficient of determination) and root mean square error of calibration (RMSEC), $R^2$ and RMSEC were 0.63 and 0.027 for larch, 0.68 and 0.033 for Korean pine, 0.62 and 0.033 for red pine, 0.76 and 0.022 for cedar, and 0.79 and 0.027 for cypress, respectively. For the calibration model, which contained all species in this study, the $R^2$ was 0.75 and the RMSEC was 0.37.

표백에 의한 라디에타소나무의 청변 제거 (Removing Sapstain of Radiata Pine by Bleaching)

  • 본 연구는 라디에타소나무 제재목의 균 변색을 제거하기 위한 표백처리의 사용 가능성을 조사하기 위하여 수행하였다. 염소계 표백제인 아염소산나트륨과 차아염소산나트륨은 표백조건(약제농도, 처리온도, 처리시간)의 조절에 따라 만족할만한 변색제거 효과를 얻을 수 있었다. 비염소계 표백제인 과산화수소는 표백조건의 조절만으로는 변색제거가 불가능하였으나 규산나트륨과 수산화나트륨을 활성제로 첨가하는 경우에는 염소계 표백제보다 탁월한 변색제거 효과를 나타내었다. 그러나 활성제 첨가에 따라 재색의 녹색화 문제가 발생하였는데, 앞으로 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위한 연구가 진행되어야 할 것이다. 또한, 앞으로 본 연구를 통해 개발된 변색제거 방법의 현장 적용을 위한 후속 연구도 필요하다고 본다.

예비천연건조가 잣나무 중목구조부재의 고온저습건조 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Reserve Air-Drying of Korean Pine Heavy Timbers on High-temperature and Low-humidity Drying Characteristics)

  • 최종함수율은 예비천연건조를 수행한 시험재에서 더 균일하게 건조가 가능하였으며, 예비천연건조 후 고온저습건조시 최종함수율은 초기함수율에 영향을 받는 것으로 사료된다. 재면할렬 억제 효과는 예비천연건조를 수행한 시험재에서 더 효과적인 것으로 조사되었으나, 예비천연건조 중 발생된 재면할렬에 의한 영향이 크기 때문에 예비천연건조 중할렬발생 억제가 중요할 것으로 판단된다. 부분엔드코팅은 내부할렬, 표면경화율, 비틀림, 수축율에 미치는 영향이 없는 것으로 조사되었다. 예비천연건조는 고온저습건조 중 내층에 발생하는 인장응력을 감소시켜 내부할렬의 발생을 매우 효과적으로 억제하고 표면경화율을 감소시키는 것으로 조사되었다. 비틀림의 경우 함수율감소에 따른 수축으로 인하여 비틀림의 정도가 증가되었다.

생장지역에 따른 소나무 형성층 활동의 계절적 변화 (Seasonal Change of Cambium Activity of Pine Trees at Different Growth Sites)

  • 동일 수종이라도 생장지역과 영급에 따라 수형 또는 재질의 차이가 존재하고, 이러한 차이는 형성층 활동에 따른 목부세포의 양과 질이 다르기 때문에 생기게 된다. 본 연구는 소광리와 안면도에서 자라는 소나무를 대상으로 형성층 활동의 계절적 변화를 조사하여 소나무 목재의 재질 차이를 분석하기 위한 기초자료를 마련하기 위해 수행하였다. 형성층 활동 분석 결과, 소광리 5영급 임분은 목재세포 분열을 4월 중순에 시작하였으며, 안면도는 5영급과 9영급 모두에서 4월 초에 시작하는 것으로 조사되었다. 소광리 9영급의 경우는 5월 중순에서 6월 중순으로 조사되었다. 형성층에서 세포분열이 종료되는 시기는 소광리 9영급을 제외하고 소광리와 안면도 모두 10월 중순부터 10월 말로 조사되었다. 소광리 9영급의 형성층 내 세포분열 종료는 10월 초였다. 형성층의 계절별 활동을 조사한 결과, 소광리의 형성층 분열기간이 안면도보다 짧게 나타났다. 반면, 소광리 소나무의 형성층으로부터 분열된 세포 수는 안면도보다 더 많은 것으로 나타났다.

Experimental Study on the Direct Contact Thermal Screw Drying of Sawdust for Wood-Pellet Fuel

  • Wood fuel must be dried before combustion to minimize the energy loss. Sawdust of Japanese red pine was dried in a direct contact thermal screw dryer to investigate the drying characteristics of sawdust as a raw material for bio-fuel. Average drying rate and energy efficiency was 1.4%/min and 69.23% at $100^{\circ}C$, respectively, and those at $120^{\circ}C$ was 2.1%/min and 71.03%, respectively.

우리나라 건축물에 사용된 목재 수종의 변천 (Changes in the Species of Woods Used for Korean Ancient and Historic Architectures)

  • We investigated the changes in the species of the woods used for Korean ancient and historic architectures, which include prehistoric excavated relics and existing wooden buildings in South Korea. The species data were collected from various sources such as excavation and repair reports, journal papers, and a few unpublished documents. We divided the building Periods as Paleolithic, Neolitic, Bronze Ages, Iron Age/Three Kingdoms, Koryo, Joseon (early, middle, late) and modem periods. In prehistoric periods, hardwoods were major species. Oak (Quercus spp.) woods dominated (94 percent in average); the others (5%) were Juglans mandshurica, Platycarya strobilacea, Castanea crenata, and few softwoods(1%). During Iron Age and Three Kingdom periods, oaks remained as a major species (57%) and others Platycarya strobilacea(21%), Castanea crenata(13%), and Pinus spp. (6%). The oak woods decreased in Koryo period and they occupied only 1.1%. Instead of oaks, pine (Pinus spp., 71%) and Zelkova serrata (22%) dominated in Koryo. In early and middle Joseon periods, pine woods (73%) remain as a major species and the others were oaks (14%) and Zelkova serrata (9%). As late Joseon came, the pine woods occupied more than 88%. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a few boreal species such as larch (Larix spp.) and spruce (Picea spp.), which grow in cold area, were found. We believe they were transported from northern Korea. The existing buildings in Korea are mainly from Joseon period and a few from late Koryo periods. During these periods, pine woods were used for most buildings. For such reason, pine woods were known as 'representative materials for historic buildings'. but earlier times, broad-leaved trees, i.e., oak and Zelkova woods were major materials. The changes in building materials resulted from both climate and human impacts. The dry climate and disturbed forests induce more pines in the mountains. We also compared the wood qualities of the species and found that Zelkova woods were superior ones and deserved more planting for future demands in the repair for historic buildings.

Automatic Wood Species Identification of Korean Softwood Based on Convolutional Neural Networks

  • Automatic wood species identification systems have enabled fast and accurate identification of wood species outside of specialized laboratories with well-trained experts on wood species identification. Conventional automatic wood species identification systems consist of two major parts: a feature extractor and a classifier. Feature extractors require hand-engineering to obtain optimal features to quantify the content of an image. A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which is one of the Deep Learning methods, trained for wood species can extract intrinsic feature representations and classify them correctly. It usually outperforms classifiers built on top of extracted features with a hand-tuning process. We developed an automatic wood species identification system utilizing CNN models such as LeNet, MiniVGGNet, and their variants. A smartphone camera was used for obtaining macroscopic images of rough sawn surfaces from cross sections of woods. Five Korean softwood species (cedar, cypress, Korean pine, Korean red pine, and larch) were under classification by the CNN models. The highest and most stable CNN model was LeNet3 that is two additional layers added to the original LeNet architecture. The accuracy of species identification by LeNet3 architecture for the five Korean softwood species was 99.3%. The result showed the automatic wood species identification system is sufficiently fast and accurate as well as small to be deployed to a mobile device such as a smartphone.

  • 목탄의 제조과정에서 발생되는 목타르의 신용도를 찾고자 목타르를 이용한 레졸형 페놀수지접착제를 제조하여, 합판에 대한 접착력 시험을 실시하였다. 소나무타르계 접착제는 미첨가 페놀접착제와 비교했을 때, 고형분, 점도와 같은 수지의 물성은 유사하였으며, 인장 전단 접착력에서도 비내수, 내수 모두 페놀접착제에 비해 크게 떨어지지 않았다. 그러나, 참나무타르계 접착제의 경우에서는 수지물성도 페놀수지와는 다른 물성을 보였으며, 내수접착력은 페놀접착제의 접착력에 비해 절반 정도의 낮은 접착력을 보였다. 포름알데히드 방출량은 목타르의 첨가량이 많을수록 많이 방출되었다.

  • Effects of Mg-base acid sulfite and Mg- or Na-base bisulfite on pine bark cooking were examined. In the presence of 75 % free acid at 145 $^{\circ}C$, the rate of cooking and delignification was improved with the increase of total acid. However, the delignification could not be achieved by 50 % or more under these cooking conditions. When cooked with 50~65 % free acid and at 155~165 $^{\circ}C$, the rate of cooking and delignification was remarkably improved. Thus, the bark was delignified up to 73 % when cooked for 2 hours in the presence of 50 % free acid and 24 % total acid. Na-base bisulfite was slightly more effective than Mg-base bisulfite for cooking, giving 76 % delignification of pine bark. However, there was no significant difference in selectivity of delignification between Na- and Mg-base bisulfite cooking.
