A Case Study on Smart Livestock with Improved Productivity after Information and Communications Technologies Introduction

  • The fourth industrial revolution based on information and communication technology (ICT) becomes the center of society, and the overall industrial structure is also changing significantly. ICT refers to the hardware of information devices and the software technologies required for the operation and information management of these devices, and any means of collecting, producing, processing, preserving, communicating and utilizing them. ICT is integrated into industries and services or combined with new technologies in various fields such as robotics and nanotechnology to connect all products and services to the network. The development of ICT, which continuously creates new products and services, has spread to all sectors of the industry, affecting not only daily life but also the livestock sector recently. In agriculture, ICT technology can reduce production costs by efficiently managing labor and energy because it can improve quality and yield based on data on environmental and growth information such as temperature, humidity, light and soil. In particular, smart livestock is considered suitable for achieving livestock management goals because it can reduce labor force and improve productivity by remotely and automatically managing accurate information necessary for raising and breeding livestock with ICT devices. The purpose of this study is to propose the need for ICT technology by comparing farm productivity before and after ICT is introduced. The method of the study is to compare the productivity before and after the introduction of ICT in Korean beef farms, pig farms, and poultry farms. The effectiveness of the study proved the excellence of ICT technology through the production results before ICT introduction and the productivity improvement case of livestock farms that efficiently operated manpower management and reduced labor force after ICT introduction. The conclusion of this paper is to present the need for smart livestock through ICT adoption through case study results.

Development of a biosensor from aptamers for detection of the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus

  • Background: Recently, the pork industry of Thailand faced an epidemic of highly virulent strains of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), which spread throughout Southeast Asia, including the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Cambodia. Hence, the rapid and on-site screening of infected pigs on a farm is essential. Objectives: To develop the new aptamer as a biosensor for detection PRRSV which are rapid and on-site screening of infected pig. Methods: New aptamers against PRSSV were identified using the combined techniques of capillary electrophoresis, colorimetric assay by gold nanoparticles, and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Results: Thirty-six candidate aptamers of the PRRSV were identified from the systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (SELEX) by capillary electrophoresis. Only 8 out of 36 aptamers could bind to the PRSSV, as shown in a colorimetric assay. Of the 8 aptamers tested, only the 1F aptamer could bind specifically to the PRSSV when presented with the classical swine fever virus and a pseudo rabies virus. The QCM was used to confirm the specificity and sensitivity of the 1F aptamer with a detection limit of 1.87 × 1010 particles. Conclusions: SELEX screening of the aptamer equipped with capillary electrophoresis potentially revealed promising candidates for detecting the PRRSV. The 1F aptamer exhibited the highest specificity and selectivity against the PRRSV. These findings suggest that 1F is a promising aptamer for further developing a novel PRRSV rapid detection kit.

Estimation of genetic parameters for pork belly traits

  • Objective: Pork belly is a cut of meat with high worldwide demand. However, although the belly is comprised of multiple muscles and fat, unlike the loin muscle, research on their genetic parameters has yet to focus on a representative cut. To use swine breeding, it is necessary to estimate heritability against pork belly traits. Moreover, estimating genetic correlations is needed to identify genetic relationship among the traditional carcass and meat quality traits. This study sought to estimate the heritability of the carcass, belly, and their component traits, as well as the genetic correlations among them, to confirm whether these traits can be improved. Methods: A total of 543 Yorkshire pigs (406 castrated males and 137 females) from 49 sires and 244 dam were used in this study. To estimate genetic parameters, a total of 12 traits such as lean meat production ability, meat quality and pork belly traits were chosen. The heritabilities were estimated by using genome-wide efficient mixed model association software. The statistical model was selected so that farm, carcass weight, sex, and slaughter season were fixed effects. In addition, its genetic parameters were calculated via MTG2 software. Results: The heritability estimates for the 7th belly slice along the whole plate and its components were low to moderate (0.07±0.07 to 0.33±0.07). Moreover, the genetic correlations among the carcass and belly traits were moderate to high (0.28±0.20 to 0.99±0.31). Particularly, the rectus abdominis muscle exhibited a high absolute genetic correlation with the belly and meat quality (0.73±52 to 0.93±0.43). Conclusion: A moderate to high correlation coefficient was obtained based on the genetic parameters. The belly could be genetically improved to contain a larger proportion of muscle regardless of lean meat production ability.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus: an update overview of virus epidemiology, vaccines, and control strategies in South Korea

  • Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) has posed significant financial threats to the domestic pig industry over the last three decades in South Korea. PEDV infection will mostly result in endemic persistence in the affected farrow-to-finish (FTF) herds, leading to endemic porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) followed by year-round recurrent outbreaks. This review aims to encourage collaboration among swine producers, veterinarians, and researchers to offer answers that strengthen our understanding of PEDV in efforts to prevent and control endemic PED and to prepare for the next epidemics or pandemics. We found that collaboratively implementing a PED risk assessment and customized four-pillar-based control measures is vital to interrupt the chain of endemic PED in affected herds: the former can identify on-farm risk factors while the latter aims to compensate for or improve weaknesses via herd immunity stabilization and virus elimination. Under endemic PED, long-term virus survival in slurry and asymptomatically infected gilts ("Trojan Pigs") that can transmit the virus to farrowing houses are key challenges for PEDV eradication in FTF farms and highlight the necessity for active monitoring and surveillance of the virus in herds and their environments. This paper underlines the current knowledge of molecular epidemiology and commercially available vaccines, as well as the risk assessment and customized strategies to control PEDV. The intervention measures for stabilizing herd immunity and eliminating virus circulation may be the cornerstone of establishing regional or national PED eradication programs.

전산관리 양돈농가의 번식성적에 미치는 요인에 관한 연구 (Studies on Factors affecting on Reproductive traits of the Pig Farms managed by EDP System)

  • This study was conducted to investigate effects of farm, type of sow Landrace${\times}$Yorkshire, LY; Yorkshire${\times}$ Landrace, YL; Yorkshire${\times}$Yorkshire, YY and multi-cross bred sow, MBS), parity, farrowing year, farrowing season and mating method on reproductive traits such as total number born per litter, number of born alive per litter, number of weaned per litter, number of mummified per litter, number of stillbirth. The Reproductive Records of 3,387 litters from January, 1999 to September, 2002 were obtained from four pig farms managed by Electronic Data Processing(EDP) system. Reproductive performances for two types of F1 Sows(YL and LY) were estimated as 11.34${\pm}$0.266 and 11.57${\pm}$0.263 heads for total number of born per litter, 10.56${\pm}$0.216 and 11.81${\pm}$0.251 heads for number of born alive per litter, and 10.05${\pm}$0.131 and 9.96${\pm}$0.153 heads for number of weaned per litter, respectively. These records are significantly higher(P〈0.05) than those of YY and MBS. However, number of mummified per litter, number of stillborn per litter, number of dead by diarrhea per litter, number of dead by other reasons during lactating period per litter and estrus interval did not show significant difference between types of sows. There were more total number of born per litter and number of weaned per litter in year 2001 than other year. As year passed, number of dead by crush per litter, number of dead by diarrhea per litter and number of dead by other reasons during lactating period per litter reduced from 0.18${\pm}$0.023 to 0.07${\pm}$0.022 head, 0.12${\pm}$0.21 to 0.02${\pm}$0.020 head and 0.43${\pm}$0.041 to 0.22${\pm}$0.040 head, respectively and weaning rate increased from 0.94${\pm}$0.005% to 0.97${\pm}$0.005%. The total number of born per litter and number of born alive per litter were higher(P〈0.05) in the case of mating twice than mating once. The number of weaned per litter, number of mummified per litter and number of stillborn per litter were not significant(P〈0.05) between mating methods. Estrus interval was shorter on the occasion of twice artificial insemination(5.24${\pm}$0.153days) than twice natural mating(6.51${\pm}$0.466days).

수용성 탄수화물을 이용한 분뇨슬러리 pH 적정화 및 암모니아 휘산의 저감 (Optimizated pH and Mitigated Ammonia Emission in Pig Manure Slurry by Soluble Carbohydrate Supplementation)

  • 우리나라 양돈 농장 내 돈사의 대부분은 고밀도 사육에 적합한 피트형 구조를 가지고 있다. 피트형 돈사는 돼지의 배설물이 바닥의 공간에 장기간 저장되는 구조로서 기존의 돈사에 비해 분뇨 처리를 위한 노동비용이 크게 절감되는 장점이 있다. 그러나 피트에 저장된 분뇨슬러리는 암모니아를 비롯하여 다양한 냄새물질을 지속적으로 배출하여 돼지와 근로자의 건강을 위협하게 된다. 축산업의 역사가 오래된 축산 선진국에서는 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 슬러리 첨가제, 스크러버, 바이오필터 등을 개발하였으며 우리나라 역시, 점차 고밀도 사육 방식이 확산됨에 따라 냄새저감 수단에 대한 수요가 빠르게 증가하고 있다. 특히 최근에는 돈사 피트에 직접 투여하는 미생물제의 보급이 빠르게 확대되고 있다. 미생물제는 구매 비용이 높다는 단점에도 불구하고 운반, 저장, 사용이 편리하고 상대적으로 유지비가 저렴하여 소규모 양돈 농가에서 많이 선택되고 있다. 이러한 미생물제와 비교하여 유사한 효과를 발휘하면서도 비용이 훨씬 저렴한 냄새저감 수단으로서 수용성 탄수화물이 있다. 수용성탄수화물이란 설탕, 포도당, 당밀과 같이 분자량이 적은 단당류 또는 이당류 등을 포함하며 분뇨슬러리에 용해된 이후 빠르게 미생물에 의해 이용될 수 있는 탄소화합물을 의미한다. 분뇨 내 미생물은 투여된 수용성 탄수화물을 분해하여 이산화탄소 및 각종 유기산을 생산함으로 슬러리를 산화시키는 효과를 발휘한다. 산화된 슬러리 내에서 비이온성인 암모니아는 이온성인 암모늄 이온으로 전환되어 휘발성을 잃게 된다. 본 연구에서 대표적인 수용성 탄수화물인 설탕을 돈분뇨 슬러리(120kg)에 0.1%(w/w) 투여함으로서 슬러리의 pH를 8.2 수준으로 유지하였고 암모니아의 휘발은 10일 평균 33% 저감하는 효과를 얻었다. 결론적으로 본 연구의 결과를 돈사 현장에서 활용한다면 미생물제에 비해 보다 저렴한 비용으로 피트 슬러리의 암모니아 휘발을 저감할 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.

돈분뇨 농축액비와 부산물액비 혼합시용이 배추의 생육과 수량에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Mixture Application of Concentrated Pig Slurry and Byproduct Liquid Fertilizer on the Growth and Yield of Chinese Cabbage)

  • 본 연구는 농축산 부산물을 이용한 환경친화적 유기액비의 제조와 시용 기술을 개발하여, 채소의 고품질 친환경 안전농산물 생산기술을 확립하고자 돈분뇨 처리과정에서 한외여과막을 통과하고 역삼투막에서 역류되어 나오는 농축액비에 부족한 성분을 부산물, 화학비료와의 혼합액비가 배추 생육과 수량, 토양에 미치는 영향을 검토하고자 수행하였다. 시험구는 대조구의 검정시비량를 기준으로 막분리 농축액비(CS)와 부산물액비구(BF), 막분리 농축액비(CS)와 부산물액비 혼합액비시용구(CS%+BF), 농축액비와 부산물액비 혼합에 질소를 보충한 유기-화학비료 혼합액비시용구(CS+BF+N), 대조구로 화학비료 추비시용구(CF) 등 5처리를 완전임의 3반복으로 배치하였다. 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 막분리 농축액비(CS)는 발효과정 중 pH의 변화가 적었으나 부산물액비는 발효초기 pH가 7.0 부근에서 호기발효 후 2일 부터 pH가 지속적으로 낮아져 발효 후 3일에서 7일 사이에 5.0 정도로 저하되었다가 발효 후 9일 부터 상승하여 발효 후 14일에 약산성에서 중성 부근에 도달하였다. 부산물액비의 EC는 발효 시작 시점에 8dS/m에서 발효와 함께 계속 상승하여 발효 종료시점인 30일에는 15dS/m로 도달하였다. 2. 막분리 농축액비(CS)는 질소함량은 $1,528mg/{\ell}$, 칼리함량은 $6,025mg/{\ell}$로 질소 함량에 비하여 칼리 함량이 4배나 높은 불균형적인 양분조성를 나타내었다. 그러나 부산물액비는 T-N 함량은 $1,760mg/{\ell}$, $K_2O$ 함량이 $1,921mg/{\ell}$로 질소와 칼리 성분의 균형이 맞아 추비용비료로 적합한 성분특성를 나타내었다. 3. 주당엽수는 대조구 58.7개에 비하여 유기액비-화학비료 맞춤액비 시용구(CF+BF+N)에서 65.0개로 높았으나 막분리 농축액비(CS)의 엽수는 49.2개로 매우 낮았다. 주중과 구중은 막분리 농축액비처리구에서는 불균형적인 양분조성으로 2.33, 1.82kg로 대조구의 3.29, 2.43kg보다 각각 29, 25% 감소되었다. 부산물액비(BF), 혼합액비 처리구(CS+BF)에서의 주중과 구중은 화학비료 대조구와 대등하였다. 맞춤액비시용구(CS+BF%+N)에서의 주중과 구중은 3.55, 2.68kg로 대조구보다 각각 8, 10% 높았다. 4. 배추식물체와 토양의 무기성분 함량은 막분리 농축액비(CS)처리구에서 $K_2O$ 함량은 높게 나타났다. 맞춤액비구는 T-N 함량이 다른 처리구 보다 높은 경향이었다.

영국의 농업정책이 지리적 전문화에 미친 영향 연구 (Agricultural Policies and Geographical Specialization of Farming in England)

  • 본 연구는 농업의 산업화 과정에서 국가의 농업정책이 지역적 전문화(specialization)에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는가를 영국을 사례로 하여 분석한 논문이다. 1950년대 이후 영국은 영농규모의 집중화(concentration), 보장 가격의 설시, 조건불리지역 사업을 통해 농업의 산업화를 촉진하는 정책을 실시하였으며 이로 인해 농업의 지역적인 전문화가 발생하였다. 작물의 전문화는 밀과 보리 및 종유(oilseed)를 중심으로 나타났다. 밀의 경우 EU 가입이후 상대적으로 부족하면서 공동농업정정책(Common Agricultural Policy)에서 높은 보장가격을 지지받음에 따라 동부 잉글랜드 지방의 토양이 비옥한 지역을 중심으로 전문화가 이루어졌다. 보리의 경우 사료작물로 재배되면서 가축사육지원정책의 영향을 받아 가축사육의 전문화가 이루어진 지역에서 집중 재배되었다. 종유의 지역적 전문화는 식품가공업이 발달과 함께 품종 개발, 가공 및 저장기술의 발달로 남부지역에서 북부지역으로 확산되었다. 가축 사육은 작물 재배보다 전문화가 뚜렷하였다. 특히 1970년대부터 실시된 조건불리지역 사업은 영농조건이 불리한 영국 서부 구릉지 지역에 전문화를 유발시키면서 환경보전론자들의 비판을 받기도 하였다. 또한 1980년대 중반이후 우유생산량을 줄이기 위한 쿼터제도에서 농민들간에 쿼터량을 거래할 수 있게 함으로서, 동부지역의 농민이 서부지역에 이를 양도함으로서 전문화는 더욱 촉진되었다. 이와 같은 연구 결과는 농업정책이 현시적으로 혹은 암묵적으로 공간적인 측면을 지니게 되어 농업의 지역적 분화를 유발함을 의미한다.

Evaluation of Genome Based Estimated Breeding Values for Meat Quality in a Berkshire Population Using High Density Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Chips

  • The accuracy of genomic estimated breeding values (GEBV) was evaluated for sixteen meat quality traits in a Berkshire population (n = 1,191) that was collected from Dasan breeding farm, Namwon, Korea. The animals were genotyped with the Illumina porcine 62 K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) bead chips, in which a set of 36,605 SNPs were available after quality control tests. Two methods were applied to evaluate GEBV accuracies, i.e. genome based linear unbiased prediction method (GBLUP) and Bayes B, using ASREML 3.0 and Gensel 4.0 software, respectively. The traits composed different sets of training (both genotypes and phenotypes) and testing (genotypes only) data. Under the GBLUP model, the GEBV accuracies for the training data ranged from $0.42{\pm}0.08$ for collagen to $0.75{\pm}0.02$ for water holding capacity with an average of $0.65{\pm}0.04$ across all the traits. Under the Bayes B model, the GEBV accuracy ranged from $0.10{\pm}0.14$ for National Pork Producers Council (NPCC) marbling score to $0.76{\pm}0.04$ for drip loss, with an average of $0.49{\pm}0.10$. For the testing samples, the GEBV accuracy had an average of $0.46{\pm}0.10$ under the GBLUP model, ranging from $0.20{\pm}0.18$ for protein to $0.65{\pm}0.06$ for drip loss. Under the Bayes B model, the GEBV accuracy ranged from $0.04{\pm}0.09$ for NPCC marbling score to $0.72{\pm}0.05$ for drip loss with an average of $0.38{\pm}0.13$. The GEBV accuracy increased with the size of the training data and heritability. In general, the GEBV accuracies under the Bayes B model were lower than under the GBLUP model, especially when the training sample size was small. Our results suggest that a much greater training sample size is needed to get better GEBV accuracies for the testing samples.

The Body Weight-related Differences of Leptin and Neuropeptide Y (NPY) Gene Expression in Pigs

  • To determine if body weight change is directly related to altered leptin and neuropeptide Y (NPY) gene expression, we assessed adipose tissue weight, percent body fat, leptin and NPY mRNA levels and serum leptin concentration in pigs at weights of 1, 20, 40, 60, and 90 kg. The results indicated that the weight of adipose tissues and the percent body fat of pigs significantly increased and correlated with body weight (BW) from 1 to 90 kg (p<0.01). Serum leptin concentrations and leptin mRNA levels in omental adipose tissue (OAT) increased from 1 to 60 kg, and then decreased from 60 to 90 kg. At 60 kg, the serum leptin concentration and leptin mRNA level significantly increased by 33.5% (p<0.01) and 98.2% (p<0.01), respectively, as compared with the levels at 1 kg. At 60 kg, the amount of leptin mRNA in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) was significantly higher than that of 1 and 40 kg animals (p<0.05). NPY gene expression in the hypothalamus also changed with BW and at 60 kg the NPY mRNA level significantly decreased by 54.0% (p< 0.05) as compared with that in 1 kg. Leptin mRNA in OAT was correlated with serum leptin concentrations (r = 0.98, p<0.01), body weight (r = 0.82, p<0.05) and percent body fat (r = 0.81, p<0.05). This is the first report of the developmental expression of leptin in porcine OAT, peritoneal adipose tissue (PAT) and SAT, and proves that the expression of leptin in OAT could reflect the levels of circulating leptin. These results provide some information for nutritional manipulation of leptin secretion which could lead to practical methods of controlling appetite and growth in farm animals, thereby regulating and improving efficiency of lean meat production and meat production quality.
