  • This paper describes the simulation of a micromachined dome-shaped-diaphragm acoustic transducer built on a $1.5{\mu}m$ thick silicon nitride diaphragm ($2,000{\mu}m$ in radius, with a circular clamped boundary on a silicon substrate) with electrodes and piezoelectric ZnO film in a silicon substrate. Finite element analysis with ANSYS 5.6 has been performed to analyze the static and dynamic behaviors of the transducer under both pressure and voltage loadings.

  • A bond graph modeling approach which is equivalent to a finite element method is formulated in the case of the piezoelectric thickness vibrator. This formulation suggests a new definition of the generalized displacements for a continuous system as well as the piezoelectric thickness vibrator. The newly defined coordinates are illustrated to be easily interpreted physically and easily used in analysis of the system performance. The bond graph model offers the primary advantage of physical realizability and has a greater physical accuracy because of the use of multiport energic elements. While results are presented is general in scope and can be applied to arbitrary physical systems.

  • Magnetoelectric(ME) laminate composites of $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-PbTiO_3 (PMN-PT)$ and Terfenol-D were prepared by sandwiching single crystals of PMN-PT between Terfenol-D disks. The magnetoelectric voltage coefficient (dE/dH) of the composite was determined to be 10.30 V/cm${\cdot}$Oe, at 1 kHz and under a dc magnetic bias of 0.4 T. The value of dE/dH is ∼80 times higher than either that of naturally occurring magnetoelectrics or artificially-grown magnetoelectric composites. This superior magnetoelectric voltage coefficient is attributed to the high piezoelectric voltage constant as well as the high elastic compliance of PMN-PT single crystal and the large magnetostrictive response of Terfenol-D.

  • Finite element models are constructed using the commercial code ANSYS for two most representative types of ultrasonic transducers, cMUTs and piezoelectric transducers. Calculation result shows the origin and level of cross talk between array elements in each transducer type For reduction of the cross talk level, the effects of various structural variations are Investigated for each transducer type. The results say that proper design of the coupling isolation structures between the transducing elements can significantly reduce the cross talk in ultrasonic transducers.

  • The most of conventional ultrasonic transducers are constructed to generate either longitudinal or shear waves, but not both of them. We investigated the mechanism of dual mode transducers that generates both of the longitudinal and shear waves simultaneously with a single PZT element. The study has been aimed to find the desired cut by the examining the piezoelectric properties. Theory predicts that a mixed P/S mode transducer can be constructed using a related Z-cut of a PZT ceramics. We studied the performance of a PZT element as a function of its rotation angle so that its efficiency is optimized to excite the two waves equally strongly. The results are verified by checking the impedance variation of the element with Finite Element Methods, and chocking the wave form by pulse-echo test simulation. Based upon the theory a rotated Z-cut was prepared and a transducer were fabricated. Validity of the theory calculation is verified through the

  • The NDT(nondestructive test) using pulse echo method with piezoelectric transducers and the system for NDT including image processing were studoed. The system consisted of pulse generator and receiver, two step motors for X-Y scanner, PC-Scope for data aquisition and PC-Lab for trigger and motor driving. We tested and estimated at one point under the following conditions : 1) just water, 2) Aluminum without any crack and 3) Aluminum with hole. The estimated NDT result of whole area (point : $35{\times}20$) is compared with real samples.

  • A technique for damage localization and assessment based on measurements of both eigenvectors curvatures and eigenfrequencies is proposed. The procedure is based on two successive steps: a model independent localization, based on changes of modal curvatures, and the solution of a one-dimensional minimization problem to evaluate damage intensity. The observability properties of damage parameters is discussed and, accordingly, a suitable change of coordinates is introduced. The proposed technique is illustrated with reference to a cantilever Euler beam endowed with a set of piezoelectric transducers. To assess the robustness of the algorithm, a parametric study of the identification errors with respect to the number of transducers and to the number of considered modal quantities is carried out with both clean and noise-corrupted data.

  • Novel design of interdigitated electrodes capable of increasing the performance of piezoelectric transducers are proposed. The new electrodes' geometry improve the electromechanical coupling by offering an enhanced adaptation of the electric field to the interdigitated electrode configuration. The proposed analysis is based on finite element modeling and takes into account local polarization effect. It is shown that the proposed electrodes considerably increase the strain generation compared to flat electrode arrangement used for Macro Fiber Composite (MFC) and Active Fiber Composite (AFC) actuators. Also, electric field singularities are reduced allowing better reliability of the transducer against electric failure.

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) is vital for detecting the onset of damage and for preventing catastrophic failure of civil infrastructure systems. In particular, piezoelectric transducers have the ability to excite and actively interrogate structures (e.g., using surface waves) while measuring their response for sensing and damage detection. In fact, piezoelectric transducers such as lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) have been used for various laboratory/field tests and possess significant advantages as compared to visual inspection and vibration-based methods, to name a few. However, PZTs are inherently brittle, and PVDF films do not possess high piezoelectricity, thereby limiting each of these devices to certain specific applications. The objective of this study is to design, characterize, and validate piezoelectric nanocomposites consisting of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles assembled in a PVDF copolymer matrix for sensing and SHM applications. These films provide greater mechanical flexibility as compared to PZTs, yet possess enhanced piezoelectricity as compared to pristine PVDF copolymers. This study started with spin coating dispersed ZnO- and PVDF-TrFE-based solutions to fabricate the piezoelectric nanocomposites. The concentration of ZnO nanoparticles was varied from 0 to 20 wt.% (in 5 % increments) to determine their influence on bulk film piezoelectricity. Second, their electric polarization responses were obtained for quantifying thin film remnant polarization, which is directly correlated to piezoelectricity. Based on these results, the films were poled (at 50 $MV-m^{-1}$) to permanently align their electrical domains and to enhance their bulk film piezoelectricity. Then, a series of hammer impact tests were conducted, and the voltage generated by poled ZnO-based thin films was compared to commercially poled PVDF copolymer thin films. The hammer impact tests showed comparable results between the prototype and commercial samples, and increasing ZnO content provided enhanced piezoelectric performance. Lastly, the films were further validated for sensing using different energy levels of hammer impact, different distances between the impact locations and the film electrodes, and cantilever free vibration testing for dynamic strain sensing.
