Non-contact detection of internal defects in a rail using ultrasonic waves is discussed in this paper. Cracks in a rail may be the cause of a serious railway accident such as derailment if left undetected. Concurrent rail inspection method based on ultrasonic testing using piezoelectric transducers has several limitations as it should keep physical contact with the rail. This work suggests a non-contact detection of internal defects in a rail using ElectroMagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT) which can produce and measure ultrasonic waves in a rail without any couplant. The EMATs for rail inspection are designed and fabricated and their working performance is verified through a series of experiments on various types of internal defects in test rails. The effect of lift-off between the transducers and the rail on the generated signals is also discussed.
The optimization for dynamic response associated with a cylindrical shell which is made of laminated composites embedded in a piezoelectric layer which is subjected to temperature rises and is resting on an elastic foundation is investigated for the first time. The first shear order theory (FSDT) is utilized in order to obtain the strain relations of the shell. Then, using the energy method, the equations of motions as well as boundary condition of the problem are attained. The formulation of this study together with the solution procedure which is a numerical solution method, differential quadrature method (DQM) is validated using other researches. This paper presents a thorough study on the parameters which impacts the vibration frequency of the laminated shell. The results of this paper shows that any type of laminated composite shell can reduce the vibration frequency providing that the angle related to layer are higher than 85 degrees. Also, in order to reduce the effect of temperature rises, the laminated composites instead of orthotropic one can be used.
In order to obtain high resolution images, a focusing ultrasonic transducer operated in very high frequency (VHF) range was fabricated and its characteristics were evaluated. A 9-${\mu}m$ thick PVDF film with only one metalized surface for electric ground was adhered to a CCP (Copper-clad polyimide) film by using epoxy. It was pressed by a metal ball to form a concave surface and its rear side was filled with the epoxy. The radius of curvature and the f-number of the fabricated transducer are 7.5 mm and 1.7, respectively. The pulse-echo measurement results from a target located at the focal point showed that the frequency bandwidth was 35.0 MHz and the insertion loss near the peak frequency of approximately 40 MHz was about 60 dB. Those values agreed well with the simulation results by the KLM equivalent circuit analysis including the effect of the epoxy bonding layer. When the image of thin copper lines by the 35 MHz transducer of the UBM (Ultrasonic Backscattering Microscope) system was compared with the image by the transducer fabricated in this study, the fabricated transducer was observed that the axial resolution was improved although the lateral resolution was degraded.

InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) have been attracted much attention as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in the visible and UV regions. Particularly, quantum efficiency of green LEDs is decreased dramatically as approaching to the green wavelength (~500 nm). This low efficiency has been explained by quantum confined Stark effect (QCSE) induced by piezoelectric field caused from a large lattice mismatch between InGaN and GaN. To improve the quantum efficiency of green LED, several ways including epitaxial lateral overgrowth that reduces differences of lattice constant between GaN and sapphire substrates, and non-polar method that uses non- or semi-polar substrates to reduce QCSE were proposed. In this study, graded short-period InGaN/GaN superlattice (GSL) was grown below the 5-period InGaN/GaN MQWs. InGaN/GaN MQWs were grown on the patterned sapphire substrates by vertical-metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition system. Five-period InGaN/GaN MQWs without GSL structure (C-LED) were also grown to compare with an InGaN/GaN GSL sample. The luminescence properties of green InGaN/GaN LEDs have been investigated by using photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL (TRPL) measurements. The PL intensities of the GSL sample measured at 10 and 300 K increase about 1.2 and 2 times, respectively, compared to those of the C-LED sample. Furthermore, the PL decay of the GSL sample measured at 10 and 300 K becomes faster and slower than that of the C-LED sample, respectively. By inserting the GSL structures, the difference of lattice constant between GaN and sapphire substrates is reduced, resulting that the overlap between electron and hole wave functions is increased due to the reduced piezoelectric field and the reduction in dislocation density. As a results, the GSL sample exhibits the increased PL intensity and faster PL decay compared with those for the C-LED sample. These PL and TRPL results indicate that the green emission of InGaN/GaN LEDs can be improved by inserting the GSL structures.

GaN-based nitride semiconductors have attracted considerable attention in high-brightness light-emitting-diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) covering from green to ultraviolet spectral range. LED and LD heterostructures are usually grown on (0001)-$Al_2O_3$. The large lattice mismatch between $Al_2O_3$ substrates and the GaN layers leads to a high density of defects(dislocations and stacking faults). Moreover, Ga and N atoms are arranged along the polar [0001] crystallographic direction, which leads to spontaneous polarization. In addition, in the InGaN/GaN MQWs heterostructures, stress applied along the same axis can also give rise to piezoelectric polarization. The total polarization, which is the sum of spontaneous and piezoelectric polarizations, is aligned along the [0001] direction of the wurtzite heterostructures. The change in the total polarization across the heterolayers results in high interface charge densities and spatial separation of the electron and hole wave functions, redshifting the photoluminescence peak and decreasing the peak intensity. The effect of polarization charges in the GaN-based heterostructures can be eliminated by growing along the non-polar [$11\bar{2}0$] (a-axis) or [$1\bar{1}00$] (m-axis) orientation instead of thecommonly used polar [0001] (c-axis). For non-polar GaN growth on non-polar substrates, the GaN films have high density of planar defects (basal stacking fault BSFs, prismatic stacking fault PSFs), because the SFs are formed on the basal plane (c-plane) due to their low formation energy. A significant reduction in defect density was recently achieved by applying blocking layer such as SiN, AlN, and AlGaN in non-polar GaN. In this work, we were performed systematic studies of the defects in the nonpolar GaN by conventional and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy.
A novel cooling method induced by acoustic streaming generated by ultrasonic vibration at 30㎑ is presented. Ultrasonic vibration is obtained by piezoelectric devices and the maximum vibration amplitude of 50 m is achieved by including a horn, mechanical vibration amplifier in the system and making the complete system resonate. To investigate the enhancement of heat transfer capability of acoustic streaming, the temperature variations of heat source and air in the vicinity of heat source are measured in real-time. It is observed that acoustic streaming is instantly induced by ultrasonic vibration, resulting in the significant temperature drop due to the bulk air flow caused by acoustic streaming. In addition, it is observed that the cooling effect on the heat source is maximized when the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and heat source coincides with the multiples of half-wavelength of the ultrasonic wave. This fact results from the resonance of the sound wave. The theoretical analysis of the dependence on the gap is also accomplished and verified by experiment. The advantage of the proposed cooling method by acoustic streaming is noise-free due to the ultrasonic vibration and maintenance-free because of the absence of moving parts. Moreover. This cooling method can be utilized to the nano and micro-electro mechanical systems, where the fan-based conventional cooling method can not be employed.

The CdS thin films are grown on quartz plate by hot wall epitaxy. The source and substrate temperature is $590^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ respectively, and thickness of the film is $2.5\;\mu\textrm{m}$. Using extrapolation method of X-ray diffraction patterns for the CdS thin film, it was found hexagonal structure whose lattice constant a and c were $4.137\;{\AA}$ and $6.713\;{\AA}$, respectively. Hall effect on this sample was measured by the method of van der Pauw and studied on cattirer density and mobility depending on temperature. From hall data, the mobility was likely to be decreased by piezoelectric scattering in the temperature range 30 K to 200 K and by polar optical scattering in the temperature range 200 K to 293 K. In order to explore the applicability as a photoconductive cell we measured the sensitivity ($\gamma$), the ratio of photocurrent to darkcurrent (pc/dc), maximum allowable power dissipation (MAPD), spectral response and response time. The results indicated that for the samples annealed in Cu vapor the photoconductive characteristics are the best. Then we obtained the sensitivity of 0.99, the value of pc/dc of $9.42{\times}10^{6}$, the MAPD of 318 mW, and the rise and decay time of 10 ms and 9 ms, respectively.

As a part of basic studies on monitoring of landslides and slope stability using SP measurements, micro-electric potentials of rock samples were measured accompanied with the rock failure by a uniaxial loading test were measured. The measurement system consists of a 8 channel A/D converter with 24 bit resolution, uniaxial loading tester, strain gages and 4 sets of electrode attached to a rock sample. Rock samples of granite, limestone, and sandstone were tested. Also, mortar samples were tested in order to monitor electric-potentials of a uniform sample. Micro-electric potentials were detected in all saturated samples and the strength of them increased as the loading force increased. Sandstone samples showed the largest strength of micro-electric potential and it followed limestone and granite samples, which indicates a positive relationship with porosity of rocks. The mechanism generating these micro-electric potential can be explained in terms of electro-kinetics. In case of dry samples, micro-electric potential could be observed only in sandstone samples, where piezoelectric effect played main role due to high contents of quartz in sandstone samples. We found that biggest micro-electric potentials were observed at the electrodes near the crack surface of rock samples. This is very encouraging result that SP monitoring can be applied to predicting landsliding or to estimate collapsing position combining with monitoring of acoustic emissions.
In the medical field, applications of plasma are applied sterilize instruments mainly but with the advent of bio-plasma technology, the scope of application is expanding. Recently, In addition, high-density miniaturization with handheld is required for sophisticated procedures when irradiated directly or treated with non-standard conditions. Rosen-type PZT is a device with a structure that generates high voltage plasma by achieving voltage transformation through electro-mechanical coupling using piezoelectric effect.and is used in portable plasma generating devices as an advantage to increase energy density relatively. In this paper, Rosen-type PZT was modeled using equivalent circuits and was carried out and a plasma generating device for medical application was designed and prototype tested. Prototype plasma generating device generates an output voltage of 5.8 kV with 12V input power and is designed to operate at high voltage by applying the half-bridge topology power converter. The results of the study confirmed the availability of various medical devices, such as plasma jets or direct exposure equipment.
Several additives are used to enhance the geotechnical properties (e.g., shear wave velocity, shear modulus) of soils to provide sustainable, economical and eco-friendly solutions in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering. In this study, piezoelectric ring actuators are used to measure the shear wave velocity of unreinforced, fiber, cemented, and fiber reinforced cemented Toyoura sand. One dimensional oedometer tests are performed on medium dense specimens of Toyoura sand-cement-fiber-silica flour mixtures with different percentages of silica flour (0-42%), fiber and cement (e.g., 0-3%) additives. The experimental results indicate that behavior of the mixtures is significantly affected by the concentration of silica flour, fiber and cement additives. Results show that with the addition of 1-3% of PVA fibers, the shear wave velocity increases by only 1-3%. However, the addition of 1-4% of cement increases the shear wave velocity by 8-35%. 10.5-21% increase of silica flour reduces the shear wave velocity by 2-5% but adding 28-42% silica flour significantly reduces the shear wave velocity by 12-31%. In addition, the combined effect of cement and fibers was also found and with only 2% cement and 1% fiber, the shear wave velocity increase was found to be approximately 24% and with only 3% cement and 3% fibers this increased to 35%. The results from this study for the normalized shear modulus and normalized mean effective stress agree well with previous findings on pure Toyoura sand, Toyoura silty sand, fiber reinforced, fiber reinforced cemented Toyoura sand. Any variations are likely due to the difference in stress history (i.e., isotropic versus anisotropic consolidation) and the measurement method. In addition, these small discrepancies could be attributed to several other factors. The potential factors include the difference in specimen sizes, test devices, methods of analysis for the measurement of arrival time, the use of an appropriate Ko to convert the vertical stresses into mean effective stress, and sample preparation techniques. Lastly, it was investigated that there is a robust inverse relationship between α factor and 𝞫0 exponent. It was found that less compressible soils exhibit higher 𝜶 factors and lower 𝞫0 exponents.
