  • In this study, piezoceramics/polymer composites with 3-3 connectivity were made by BURPS(Burnout Plastic Sphere) technique with PZT ceramics and PMMA sphere(50 - 80${\mu}m$). And the dielectric and piezoelectric properties dependent on the PZT vol.% were investigated. The dielectric constant($K_{33}$) of 3-3 composites is increased almost linearly with increasing the PZT vol.%, while piezoelectric coefficient($d_{33}$) is slightly increased.

  • In this paper, We have studied about the microstructure of the piezoceramics PZT that were added with some kinds of additives, such as Niobium(Nb), Iron(Fe) or Manganese(Mn). The grain size of PZT ceramics was decreased with increasing the amounts of additive of Nb or Fe, while increased with increasing Mn. The curie temperature was changed slightly for the PZT ceramics containing $Fe^{3+}$, which is not dependent on the amounts, but $Nb^{5+}$ or $Mn^{2+}$ ion added PZT was lowered. The resistivity was increased with increasing the amounts of $Nb^{5+}$ additive, while decreased for $Mn^{2+}$ additive.

  • Early detection of an internal malfunction of machinery plays a very important part in all condition monitoring programs. Sensors to detect amplitude. velocity and acceleration are widely used in vibration detection and control. Piezoceramic materials are largely used in sensors and actuators for vibration monitoring and control due to their relatively large output from an induced strain and their arguable self powering characteristics. In this paper a cheap and yet reliable sensors/actuators were developed to detect vibration. The results show that low cost PZT can be designed for optimum detection of bearing vibration. This paper presents the experimental results of a number of piezoceramics characteristics in terms of resonant frequencies and variation of PZT constants with temperature.

  • Active search for lead-free piezoceramics over the last decade has harvested a considerable amount of achievements both in theory and in practice. Few would deny that those achievements are highly beneficial, but agree that this quest of developing the lead-free piezoceramics in replace for PZTs is successfully completed. Nevertheless, few would clearly state where this quest should be directed in our next move. A source of this uncertainty may originate from the fact that it is still not clear how good is good enough to beat PZTs. In this short review, we analyzed the existing literature data to clearly locate the current state of the art of lead-free piezoceramics in comparison to PZT-based piezoceramics. Four strategies of a potential importance were suggested and discussed to help researchers plan and design their future research on lead-free piezoceramics with a recently reported exemplary work.

  • PZT powders were prepared by the molten salt synthesis method. The porous PZT specimens were prepared from a mixture of PZT and polyvinylalcohol(PVA) powders by BURPS(Burnout Plastic Sphere) technique. The pulse-echo response of porous PZT transducer with various PVA wt.% were studied. The fall time of pulse-echo response of porous PZT transducer was shorten to that of solid PZT-maded transducer. Therefore, a good transmitting and receiving properties could be obtained. The distance between transducer and reflector was in good agreement both solid PZT and porous PZT fabricated transducer.

  • We have investigated on the development of 2-2 type piezocomposites that have better piezoelectric activity and lower acoustic impedance than those of conventional piezoceramics. In this study, we have investigated the piezoelectric and acoustic properties of 2-2 type piezocomposites sensor which was fabricated using dice-and-fill technique for the different volume fraction of PZT. The specific acoustic impedance of 2-2 type piezocomposites decreased linearly when PZT volume fraction was decreased. The resonance characteristics measured by an impedance analyzer(HP4194A) were similar to the analysis of finite element method (FEM). The resonance characteristics and the electromechanical coupling factor were the best when the volume fraction PZT was 0.6. It also showed the highest result from the standpoint of sensitivity, bandwidth and ring-down property and so on at the same condition. The specific characteristics show that the 2-2 type piezocomposites turned out to be superior to the ultrasonic sensor composed by single phase PZT.

In this study, we have investigated the electrical properties and acoustic impedance of 2-2 mode piezocomposite which were fabricated using the dice-and-fill technique for the different volume fractions of PZT The volume shrinkage of polymer is an important factor in 2-2 mode piezocomposites fabrication. The thickness mode electromechanical coupling factor($\kappa_t$) of PZT was compared with that of piezocomposites. It was shown that the 2-2 mode piezocomposites were much better than the PZT only. The acoustic impedance of 2-2 mode piezocomposites decreased linearly when PZT volume fraction was decreased.

  • The electrical resistivity and piezoelectric properties have been studied for Lead Zirconate-Titanate(PZT) with $Nb_2O_5$ dopant, fabricated from conventional mixed-oxide powders and molten salt synthesis. The resistivity and electromechanical coupling factor(Kp) were increased with increasing Nb contents. The reason for increasing of the electrical resistivity below the Curie Temperature(Tc), It is believed that the p-type electrical conduction in PZT is caused by the lead vacancies. The electromechanical coupling factor(Kr) and piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$ were improved by Nb additives. This behavior can be explained as a compensation effect and $Nb^{5+}$ can serve as a donar and contribute electrons to the conduction process. As a result, the optimized $Nb_2O_5$ dopants on the PZT specimens were 0.75 wt%.
