This study explored types and characteristics of South Korean crossover picturebooks that are enjoyed across generations. Participants included three publishers, six critics, six illustrators and three picturebook researchers, and focused on 92 South Korean recommended picturebooks published from 1995 to 2014 as the research material for this study. The majority of Korean crossover picturebook type was story, followed by information and art. There were few wordless books. Common themes of the story picturebooks were contemplation, traditional culture, social changes (such as immigration and redevelopment), reminiscence, social relations, loss and death, family problems, and social incidents. Classic essays and novels were revised for picturebooks as were famous poems originally written for grown-ups. Informational books were about traditions in music, architecture, furniture and special occasions like wedding and ceremonies. The style of the drawings were precise and realistic. Some drawings were done by brush and Chinese ink on hanji (traditional Korean paper) or silk. Some books featured Korean calligraphy as well, enabling adult readers to also appreciate the beauty and delicacy of the books. Art books and wordless books were quite rare and exhibited a playful tone. Adults alone were not presumed to be the primary reading audience of the picture books. Implications were made for picturebook marketing in a society such as South Korea, where the elderly population is rapidly increasing. Various forms of art books and parodies were also welcome. One conclusion of the study was that more experimental and innovative works would be encouraging for the development of South Korean crossover picturebooks.

The purpose of this study is to explore whether reading picturebooks portraying children's play assists adult readers to recall their childhood play memories according to the narrative model of human development. In this study, adult readers recalled their play memories before and after reading a picturebook depicting children's play. Adult readers' responses to the picturebooks were also collected. The types of play from their memories were categorized and the responses were qualitatively analyzed through open coding. The results indicated that first, before reading picturebooks portraying children's play, the type of play that adult readers mostly recalled was games with rules which happened outdoor. Second, after reading a picturebook, adult readers recalled new play memories which contained more detailed elements of narratives. Third, most adult readers responded to picturebooks either emotionally or aesthetically. This study suggests the perspective on picturebooks as a literature and art genre for readers from birth to death. In addition, as an evocative object, a picturebooks could assist adult readers to recall and rediscover their childhood.

The purpose of this study was to analyze 5'year' old children's responses in the process of reading picturebooks on sexual abuse and to explore the educational implications of the results. 42'five year' old children and 2 of their teachers participated as subjects in the study. Data was collected by means of observation, a diary record of the teacher's class, and an interview with teachers about children's responses in the process of reading picturebooks on sexual abuse during the free choice activities, and group activities in J and K daycare centers in Busan, Korea from July to September. The results were as follows : the analysis identified three patterns of responses; consistent responses, awkward responses, and confused and frightened responses. These result imply that selecting picturebooks for sexual abuse preventive education programs for young children needs to be given careful consideration. The importance of the teacher's reading skills and sociocultural cognition regarding sexuality in general were also discussed.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the type of endpapers in Korean picturebooks that won the Bologna Ragazzi Award. The endpapers were classified by three standards: identities between front endpapers and back endpapers, type of arts, and type of contents. As results, picturebooks with identities between front endpapers and back endpapers were slightly more than ones with unidentities. Most of art types were illustrated, followed by patterned and plain. In addition, the peritextual contents were found to be the most frequently used content type in endpapers. The results showed that the most endpapers of the Korean picturebooks that won the Bologna Ragazzi Award were related to the text contents, which suggests the important roles of endpapers in picturebook activities.

In this study, John Burningham's picturebooks(『Come Away from The Water, Shirley』, 『Time to Get Out of The Bath, Shirley』) was analyzed using the concept of carnival among Bakhtin's conversationalism theory. In John Burningham's picturebooks, the unconscious desire for the deviation of the main character, Shirley, is transformed into an adventure in an extraordinary imaginary world, and is depicted as a festival with laughter. Through picturebooks, children are satisfied by indirectly experiencing the forbidden behavior in reality by converting it into an event in the imaginary world. This indirect experience is very important for children to naturally resolve their dissatisfaction in reality and to develop their own original inner development. This study also suggests that providing an environment where children can easily access various picturebooks at home or early childhood education institutions plays a very important role in their growth.

This case study describes the nature of young children's responses in the informational picturebook reading process through the eyes of 4 young children. Over a twenty week period from September 3, 2007 to February 15, 2008, researcher observed 4 young children while they read informational picturebooks and interacted with one another in terms of what they had read. The young children's personalities, preferences and environments as individual background clearly influenced responses and interaction during the reading process. By acknowledging the response styles of young children, a teacher can assist young children in developing a repertoire of responses to informational picturebooks.

Academic interest in the educational value of picturebooks for children and the narrative importance of peritexts have been increased. This study was conducted with the purpose of presenting the components for analyzing the picturebook peritext. To this end, the components of the peritext used in 11 previous studies that analyzed the peritext of picturebooks were comprehensively reviewed. Looking at the results of the study, the components used in previous studies were largely categorized into four categories, and according to the characteristics of the components within each category, they were classified into 'basic information', 'physical elements', 'positional elements', and 'content elements.' The first category, 'basic information,' includes the title, authors' name, publication information, award information, and dedication/acknowledgment, laudatory comment. The second category, 'physical elements,' includes the format, book binding, and quality of material. The third category, 'positional elements,' includes cover(front cover, back cover, spine), endpaper, title page, copyright page, dust jacket and belly band. The fourth category, 'content elements,' includes text, illustration, typography, layout and page shape. Through the results of this study, it is expected that research on the analysis and utilization of various picturebooks will be activated.

Subjects were 88 two-year-old-toddlers(25-36 months of age) and 32 teachers in 13 childcare centers; they were randomly assigned to experimental or control groups. The researcher observed teacher-toddler interaction in the picturebook reading situation. Analysis of patterns of teachers' verbal behavior and coding of toddlers' verbal and nonverbal behaviors were based on Senechal, et al.(1995) and Whitehurst, et al.(1988), respectively. In comparison with the control group, toddlers of the experimental group showed significant differences in verbal behavior; they acquired nouns occurring in the picturebooks and more expressive and comprehensive language. After training intervention, teachers of the experimental group showed changes in quality and quantity of verbal behavior.

This study has examined, first of all, one of unique characteristics of picturebook, so-called dual audience. To be more exact, this paper aimed at exploring the flexibility of picturebooks that allows both of children and adult reader to enjoy them. For this, we analysed Piggybook by Anthony Browne that so far has been read as a traditional picturebook with a single distinctive narrative rather than as a postmodern picturebook with multiple narratives, centering on paradox and irony. The results of this study were as fallows: Piggybook has the potential of multiple readings and meanings for a variety of audiences. Above all, this picturebook raises not only the question about the gender roles but also the one about representation of reality through the language.

This thesis was a phenomenological study of an after-school picture book making program for middle school students. This study attempted to establish a theoretical system for picture book making activity by analyzing the process of self-discovery and healing through the picture book making activity. The participants were six middle school students, the picture book making activity program was organized into five stages, and in-depth interviews of the study participants and their interpretation of picture books were described. According to the research results, first, the making activity of picturebooks can construct one's own world through hyper-reality that is more excessive than the original. Second, it can be said that the fearful existence of a monster has developed awareness and insight to view its own problems from various angles through defamiliarization. These results might be that the making activity of picturebooks is a way of revealing one's existence to the world, and through this, the process of exploring and constructing the meaning of oneself and daily life. Discussion was made based on this about the creation of another world where the picturebook making activity is different from the original, the stimulating effect of the subconscious mind through the defamiliarization device, and the establishment of self-existence in picturebook creation.
