주의력 결핍 과잉행동 성향을 지닌 유아의 식행동과 식사균형도 조사 (A Survey of Dietary Behavior and Meal Balance of Preschool Children with ADHD Dispositions)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationship among dietary behavior, meal balance, and clinical symptoms related nutritional status and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) in preschool children. The survey was conducted using questionnaires and the subjects were 3~6 years old preschool children in Samcheok. Subjects were divided into an ADHD dispositions group(n=88) and a normal group(n=129) based on assessments conducted by the children's mother using the Abbreviated Conners's Parent Rating Scale. There was no significant difference in meal frequency, meal speed, meal regularity or meal balance between children with ADHD dispositions and the normal groups. The ADHD disposition group had a higher proportion of children with picky eating(p<0.05), too much snacking(p<0.05) and over eating (p=0.05) habits than the normal group. In addition, the ADHD dispositions group had a higher frequency of clinical symptoms such as 'breathlessness when going up stairs', 'sleeplessness', 'anxiety' and 'tiredness'. Overall, there was a significant relationship between ADHD disposition and dietary problems and clinical symptoms related to poor nutritional status in preschool children. Therefore, to prevent and treat ADHD in preschool children, proper dietary management such as correcting of picky eating, over snacking and overeating is needed.

Dietary habits and gastroesophageal reflux disease in preschool children

  • Purpose: To identify the relationship between dietary habits and childhood gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in preschool children. Methods: We performed a questionnaire study to analyze the relationship between dietary habits and GERD in 85 preschool children with GERD and 117 healthy children of the same age. Results: Irregular and picky eating were more p-revalent in the GERD group than in the control group (odds ratio [OR], 4.14; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.37-12.54 and OR, 4.96; 95% CI, 1.88-13.14, respectively). The snack preferences and the late night eating habits were significantly more prevalent in the GERD group than in the control group (OR, 3.83; 95% CI, 1.23-11.87 and OR, 9.51; 95% CI, 2.55-35.49, respectively). A preference for liquid foods was significantly more prevalent in the GERD group (OR, 9.51; 95% CI, 2.548-35.485). The dinner-to-bedtime interval was significantly shorter in the GERD group than in the control group ($157.06{\pm}48.47$ vs. $174.62{\pm}55.10$, P=0.020). In addition, the time between dinner and bedtime was shorter than 3 hours in 47 children (55.3%) of the GERD group and 44 (37.6%) of the control group. This difference was statistical significance (P=0.015). Conclusion: Dietary habits such as picky and irregular eating, snack preference, a preference of liquid foods, late night eating, and a shorter dinner-to-bedtime interval had a significant correlation with GERD. Further large-scale studies are necessary to confirm our results.

Effects of sensory education based on classroom activities for lower grade school children

  • This study is to verify the effects of sensory education based on classroom activities for $2^{nd}$ and $3^{rd}$ grade children. The hypothesis is that children who participated in sensory education would demonstrate positive changes in eating behaviors through sensory experiences. The sensory education program consists of 12 lessons. Twenty-six children were being recruited from one school in Changwon, Korea. Two control groups, one of which was the same age as the educated group and the other group of sixth graders, were selected by random sampling from the same school. Children answered a self-administered questionnaire. The parents (n = 20) of the children who participated in the program, took part in evaluating the program through self-administered questionnaires after the program ended. The questionnaire contained variables of general characteristics, education satisfaction, nutrition knowledge, eating attitude and behavior concerning unfamiliar foods. The score of nutrition knowledge was improved in educated children (P < 0.05). Food neophobia score towards unfamiliar foods (P < 0.05) was increased in educated children, but there are no changes in eating behaviors in all groups towards unfamiliar foods. In conclusion, sensory education is useful for having a positive eating attitude among children. Its consistent implementation could lead to healthier and well-balanced eating behaviors for children.

유아의 기질 및 성격과 식행동 간의 관련성 (The Association between Children's Dietary Behavior and Temperament & Character)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between dietary behavior and temperament & character in preschool children, and to offer basic data that can be applied for nutrition education and counseling. A total of 211 parents of preschool children aged 3~5 years performed the Korean version of Preschool Temperament and Character Inventory (K-psTCI), a questionnaire based on Cloninger's seven-factor model of personality, along with a questionnaire about the dietary behaviors of their children. K-psTCI represented seven factors such as harm avoidance (HA), novelty seeking (NS), reward dependence (RD), persistence (P), self-directedness (SD), cooperativeness (CO), and self-transcendence (ST). The subjects were divided into either the high rank group or low rank group based on the mean score of each factor. The high rank group of HA showed significantly less physical activity and less appetite than the low rank group of HA. The children in the high rank of NS were more likely to have picky eating and a late night snack. The children in the low rank of SD or CO were more likely to have undesirable dietary behaviors, such as picky eating, too much snacking, and lower appetite than those in the high rank of SD or CO. In conclusion, individual temperament & character in preschool children may be associated with their dietary behavior, and understanding temperament & character in children may be important facts to screen and to develop an effective nutrition education program for children.

남자 대학생의 동거 유무에 따른 에너지 섭취와 식습관의 비교 (The Caloric Intake Status and the Eating Habits in College Male Students Living Alone or Sharing Accommodation with Friends)

  • To investigate effects of the shared living on nutrient intakes,250 college male students who were living alone (104 men) or sharing accommodation with friends (134 men) were participated. Their average age was 22.6 years, their average height was 171.8 cm, their average weight was 65.6 kg and their average Body Mass Index (BMI) was 22.2. The caloric intakes of the men living alone or sharing accommodation were 55.9% and 72.5% of the Korean Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), respectively. The decreased caloric level of the group living alone seemed to be due to their decreased protein and fat consumption as compared to that of the group sharing accommodation. The group living alone consumed increased amounts of fiber for breakfast and half the carbohydrates, but more fat (p < 0.05) in snacks than the group sharing accommodation. The daily carbohydrate : protein : fat (C : P : F) ratio averaged 58.6 14.1 27.3, which is a lower carbohydrate and a higher fat ratio than the Korean recommended ratio. However, the group living alone was closer to the Korean recommended ratio than the group sharing accommodation. The food intake habits were evaluated as being poorer in the group living alone as compared to the group sharing accommodation, less frequent consumption of fried / pan-fried dishes, and fruits / juices, but more frequent consumption of instant / processed foods. In comparing the eating patterns of the two groups, the group living alone showed better eating habits, such as more“breakfast eating”and less“snacking in the morning, afternoon or late at night”whereas the group sharing accommodation showed better eating habits such as less“picky eaters”and less “eating out”. In the group living alone, their lower caloric intake was assumably due to their fewer side dishes, however they showed higher eating frequencies of instant i processed foods. Since the lifestyle of living alone seems to grow gradually among young men, we strongly recommend dietary education for them.

관악구 보육교사의 배식서비스 참여 및 식사지도 실태 : 영아반과 유아반의 비교 (Teachers' Participation and Mealtime Instruction in the Food Service at the Kwanak-gu Child-care Centers: Comparison between Child-care Teachers Caring Different Age Groups, Children Younger than Three Years and Those Three Years or Older)

  • This study was conducted to investigate how child-care teachers participate, practice mealtime instruction, and perceive difficulties in food service, focusing on comparison between the teachers caring two different age groups: children younger than three years (Younger Group) and those three years or older (Older Group). Questionnaires were distributed to 151 child-care centers in Kwanak-gu, Seoul, Korea during December, 2011. Only the data from 25 child-care centers, where two respective teachers in charge of Younger Group and Older Group completed the questionnaires, were analyzed. The results showed that there was no difference in terms of child-care teachers' participation in food service practice between the two groups, except for serving method; 'Pre-plated' serving was used significantly more often in Younger Group, whereas 'Line-up' serving was used in Older Group. Approximately, three quarters of the child-care centers had policies or guidelines on mealtime instruction. During mealtime, child-care teachers tended to use frequently verbal instructions such as "sit up straight when you eat" about eating manner, "don't be picky with your food" about eating habit, and "wash your hands before eating" about eating procedure in both the groups. There was no statistically significant difference regarding child-care teachers' perceived difficulties in food service between the two groups. These results indicated that child-care teachers' participation and mealtime instruction in food service did not differ between the two age groups, although children's development of digestion and eating skill differed by age. Therefore, training should be provided to child-care teachers about food service practices and mealtime instruction appropriate to children's age.

경기 일부지역 초등학교에서 담임교사의 영양교육 실시와 3~6학년생의 식생활지침 준수 정도 (Adherence to Dietary Guidelines for Elementary School Children According to Homeroom Teachers' Nutrition Education)

  • Homeroom teachers are not usually nutrition professionals, but they spend a lot of time with students in elementary school classrooms. This study was conducted to determine the association of homeroom teachers' nutrition education with the dietary habits of their classroom children. The subjects were 131 homeroom teachers and their 1,102 children from 17 elementary schools in Gyeonggi, Korea. Self-administered questionnaires to collect information on dietary habits were conducted in December 2016. The dietary habits were determined with the adherences to the Dietary Guidelines for Adults and Children, respectively, by coding the better diet life with a higher score. The significances between groups according to teachers' implementation of nutrition education (106 implemented, 25 not implemented) were analyzed by using SPSS at P<0.05. Implementing nutrition education was not associated with the dietary habits of teachers themselves, but their students. Therefore, the students of teachers who implemented nutrition education had significantly higher adherence to 8 items out of 19 items (P<0.05, P<0.01). More of the students considered themselves as non-picky eaters (P<0.05), tried to eat all the foods served at school lunch even when it contained unwanted ingredients (P<0.01), and agreed on the need of nutrition education (P<0.01), as compared to their counterparts. Conclusively, this study suggests that nutrition education delivered by homeroom teachers may be associated with more desirable dietary habits of students, even though homeroom teachers are not nutrition professionals. Therefore, efforts should be undertaken to develop and provide proper contents for homeroom teachers to use in nutrition education for elementary students.

경기 일부지역 중학생의 야식 섭취실태 (Night Eating Habits of Middle School Students in Gyeonggi)

  • 본 연구에서는 경기 일부지역에 거주하는 중학생 705명을 대상으로 야식 섭취형태, 야식 선택 시 고려사항, 야식 메뉴별 기호도 및 섭취빈도, 야식 섭취에 따른 식습관을 비교분석함으로써 청소년의 야식 섭취상태와 그에 따른 문제점을 제시하고자 하였다. 주 1회 이상 야식을 한다는 대상자를 '야식군'으로 분류하였고, 전체대상자 중 야식군은 422명(59.9%)이었다. 야식을 먹는 주된 이유는 배가 고파서(79.1%)로 나타났으며, 야식을 먹게 되는 경로는 가족이 구입해서가 39.3%로 가장 높았고, 야식을 먹는 장소는 집이 96.2%로 높은 비율을 보였다. 야식을 먹는 시간은 밤 10~11시가 40.3%로 가장 높았으며, 야식 대상자의 32.9%가 야식 후 1시간 이내에 잠자리에 들고, 야식을 먹고 난 후 다음날 아침의 변화에 대하여 69.2%가 변화가 없다고 답하였다. 야식 메뉴를 선택할 때 맛, 위생, 양 등의 순서로 중요하게 고려하는 것으로 나타났다. 기호도가 높은 야식 메뉴는 빙과류, 과일류, 치킨, 과일주스, 라면, 피자, 자장면 순이었으며, 섭취빈도가 높은 것은 과일류, 빙과류, 라면, 치킨, 요구르트, 과일주스 순이었다. 야식군은 비야식군보다 편식(P<0.01), 과식(P<0.01), 짜게 먹기(P<0.01), 불규칙한 식사시간(P<0.001)의 점수가 높아 식습관이 좋지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 결과를 종합할 때, 조사대상 중학생의 약 60%가 주 1회 이상 야식을 섭취하고 있었으며, 늦은 저녁 시간에 배고픔으로 인하여 가족과 함께 야식을 섭취하는 경우가 많고, 야식 메뉴에 있어서도 탄수화물 및 지방이 주를 이루며 영양밀도가 낮은 메뉴들에서 기호도 및 섭취빈도가 높았다. 또한 야식군이 비야식군에 비해 식습관도 바람직하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 비교적 많은 청소년을 대상으로 이들의 올바른 야식 지도에 활용할 수 있는 유의미한 결과를 도출하였지만, 야식에 대한 정의가 다소 불분명하고 여름 한 철에 조사되어 야식 메뉴가 한정적으로 제시된 제한점을 가지고 있다. 따라서 앞으로 보다 다양한 야식시간과 양 그리고 계절에 따른 야식 섭취상태를 비교 분석하는 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다.

40대 남자 생산직 근로자의 주요 만성질환 유병 인지 상태에 따른 식습관 및 식사의 질 (Food Habits and Dietary Quality by the Presence of Perceived Major Chronic Disease among Male Manufacturing Company Workers in Their 40s)

  • This study aimed to investigate the association between awareness of having a chronic disease with food habits and dietary quality among 320 male manufacturing workers in their 40s. Participants were categorized into groups. The first group comprised workers who were aware of having chronic diseases (ACD, n=160) and had been diagnosed with any one or more of the following major chronic diseases: Metabolic syndrome, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. The second group comprised those who had experienced none of the above diseases were classified as a group of people who were a ware of not having chronic diseases (ANCD, n=160). The mean age of the subjects was 44.2 years. The mean weight (P<0.001) and body mass index (BMI; P<0.01) were significantly higher in the ACD than in the ANCD group. The frequency of alcohol consumption and the number of current smokers were not significantly different between the two groups. Dietary attitudes were not significantly different between the two groups. The frequency of egg consumption was significantly higher in the ACD group (P<0.05). Picky eating, vegetable intake, checking nutrition labels, and healthy eating behavior were not significantly different between the two groups. The frequency of exercise was significantly lower in the ACD group compared to the ANCD group (P<0.05). The mean nutrition quotient (NQ) score was 51.9, with no significant difference between the two groups. Based on these results, the awareness of suffering from chronic diseases was not significantly related to dietary attitudes, food habits, and overall dietary quality among production workers. Therefore, there is a need to develop and implement nutrition education programs to inculcate an awareness of health status that can lead to dietary changes.
