자연환경과 건강증진에 관한 새로운 패러다임에 관한 고찰 (A New Paradigm of the Relationships between the Natural Environment and Human Health)

  • The natural environment plays an important role not only in ecological sustainability, but also in human health. Growing attention has been focused on the health benefits of natural environments with increasing scientific evidence in this field. Urban green space has positive effects on individual and community health; thus, it is considered as social infrastructure. The natural environment promotes mental health by relieving psychological stress and depression. Physical health can be improved by experiencing nature, which reduces physiological stress and boosts the immune system. Several international initiatives have been undertaken to improve our understanding in this field and to utilize these benefits for health promotion. Interdisciplinary approaches are needed to promote human health through the natural environment in the fields of science, education, planning and policy.

조도 변화에 따른 뇌파 기반 생체신호 변화에 관한 연구 (The Study about Variation of Physiology Signal based on EEG due to Variation of Illumination)

  • By using EEG and HRV, subjects were estimated on their psychological and physiological reaction when reading psychrometric chart in 7 point century font, in an environmental test room in the condition of temperature 25[$^{\circ}C$], relative humidity 50[RH%], air current speed 0.02[m/sec], giving variation in illuminance to 0.1, 300, 600, 1000, 1300 and 1600[lux]. As a result, it was at 1300[lux] that absolute ${\alpha}$ wave, SMR, SDNN were most vitalized, and also both sides ${\alpha}$ wave asymmetry index, SEF50, HRT, stress and fatigue degree were at the lowest. It was found that a certain illuminance which minimizes psychological stress and fatigue degree while enhancing concentration and task achievement stably does exist.

Oxidative Stress and Antioxidant Defences in the Tasar Silkworm Antheraea mylitta D: Challenged with Nosema Species

  • This study was designed to find out the effect of Nosema spore on oxidative damages and antioxidant defence in the midgut of tasar silkworm Antheraea mylitta. Higher level of lipid peroxidation (LPX) and total hydroperoxides indicate the resultant oxidative stress in the Nosema exposed specimen. Increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) suggests activation of physiological mechanism to scavenge the superoxide radical produced during Nosema infection. Higher activities of catalase and glutathione-S-tranferase on $18^{th}$ d indicate adaptive behaviour of the tissue against oxyradicals. The results suggest that Nosema infection is involved in altering the active oxygen metabolism by modulating LPX and reactive oxygen species (ROS), which is indicative of pebrine disease disorder.

동작물의 기상재해와 그 대책 (Meteorological Constraints and Countermeasures in Winter Crop Production)

  • Yield loss of wheat and barley due to meteorological constraints has been analyzed in order to get the basic information, which will lead to the counter-measures for dissemination of agricultural technology and administration. These meteorological damages were analyzed on the results of percentage yield loss and mechanism of damage and the aspects of constraints were explained. The annual yield loss of wheat and barley were 21.7% by meteorological stress: Cold damage, 5.9% ; excessive soil moisture, 5.6% ; lodging, 2.9% ; drought, 3.0% ; disease, 4.3% etc. Those damages by the stresses mentioned above and rain damage were analyzed in relation to the growth stages and the degrees of damage. The predispositions and the growth of wheat and barley to those meteorological stress are also discussed. Varietal resistances of wheat and barley to those stresses were indexed and the physiological and morphological characteristics of these resistant cultivars are described. Cultural practices to minimize the damages were also reviewed.

Endothelial cell autophagy in the context of disease development

  • Endothelial cells (EC) are the anatomical boundaries between the intravascular and extravascular space. Damage to ECs is catastrophic and induces endothelial cell dysfunction. The pathogenesis is multifactorial and involves dysregulation in the signaling pathways, membrane lipids ratio disturbance, cell-cell adhesion disturbance, unfolded protein response, lysosomal and mitochondrial stress, autophagy dysregulation, and oxidative stress. Autophagy is a lysosomal-dependent turnover of intracellular components. Autophagy was recognized early in the pathogenesis of endothelial dysfunction. Autophagy is a remarkable patho (physiological) process in the cell homeostasis regulation including EC. Regulation of autophagy rate is disease-dependent and impaired with aging. Up-regulation of autophagy induces endothelial cell regeneration/differentiation and improves the function of impaired ones. The paper scrutinizes the molecular mechanisms and triggers of EC dysregulation and current perspectives for future therapeutic strategies by autophagy targeting.

스트레스 사건의 경험이 주의변화에 미치는 영향 (Influence of Stress Experience on Change of Attention)

  • For a man to maintain attention, he needs to keep a certain level of arousal. An inordinate increase or decrease in the level of arousal eventually has a negative influence on attention. Precedent research has shown that the degree of attention changes when an experience of stress is related to anxiety resulting in a rise in arousal. This research was done to examine this hypothesis by looking at the 27 female students, 14 of whom had failed in the annual examination. The results of the investigation are as follows : The stress of failure in the examination was seen to raise the level of physiological arousal. Although pulse and electromyography showed no significant change, further inquiries should be made based on other types of methodology. In spite of the rise of arousal, the performance of selective task was degraded. This suggests those students failed to give moderate attention to given information for that kind of task. But the exact reason of that failure was not identified : that is it was difficult decide whether they gave too much attention to the anxiety brought about by stress. Performance of integral tasks, however, did not show any degradation. Judging from these results, stress seems to exert significant influence on attention in the selection of the appropriate information among the various options given. This offers an important hint in relation to the health care situation where nursing information is offered. Clients who receive nursing information in stressful situations may have difficulty in separating and selecting this helpful information from other options which they have acquired through their life experience. The content and terminology of nursing information may be strange and unintelligible to clients, although they are quite familiar and distinct to nurses. So, it is desirable for nurses to give, in addition and at the same time when nursing information is given, some certain related information as devices for selection, instead of merely giving nursing informations as such. So far it is not clear whether the concepts of information processing theory can be suitably applied to nursing. However, it is obvious, according to this research, that the quality of attention is disturbed in the stress situation. This is why further inquiries should be made into attention in practical nursing situation.

방사선과 염화수은의 일시 및 반복 복합 처리된 효모세포의 산화적 스트레스 적응과 형태 변화 (Effect of Ionizing Radiation and Mercury Chloride (II) on Cell Morphology in Yeast Cells Frequently and Temporarily Treated with Both Stressors)

  • Metal ions are essential to life. However, some metals such as mercury are harmful, even when present at trace amounts. Toxicity of mercury arises mainly from its oxidizing properties. Ionizing radiation (IR) is an active tool for destruction of cancer cells and diagnosis of diseases, etc. IR induces DNA double strand breaks in the nucleus, In addition, it causes lipid peroxidation, ceramide generation, and protein oxidation in the membrane, cytoplasm and nucleus. Yeasts have been a commonly used material in biological research. In yeasts, the physiological response to changing environmental conditions is controlled by the cell types. Growth rate, mutation and environmental conditions affect cell size and shape distributions. In this work, the effect of IR and mercury chloride (II) on the morphology of yeast cells were investigated. Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells were treated with IR, mercury chloride (II) and IR combined with mercury chloride (II). Non-treated cells were used as a control group. Morphological changes were observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The half-lethal condition from the previous experimental results was used to the IR combined with mercury. Yeast cells were exposed to 400 and 800 Gy at dose rates of 400Gy $hr^{-1}$ or 800 Gy $hr^{-1}$, respectively. Yeast cells were treated with 0.05 to 0.15 mM mercury chloride (II). Oxidative stress can damage cellular membranes through a lipidic peroxidation. This effect was detected in this work, after treatment of IR and mercury chloride (II). The cell morphology was modified more at high doses of IR and high concentrations of mercury chloride(II). IR and mercury chloride (II) were of the oxidative stress. Cell morphology was modified differently according to the way of oxidative stress treatment. Moreover, morphological changes in the cell membrane were more observable in the frequently stress treated cells than the temporarily stress treated cells.

산화스트레스로 인한 C6 Glioma Cell Apoptosis에 대한 길경의 세포보호효과 (Cytoprotective Effects of Platycodon grandiflorus (Jacq.) A.DC on C6 Glioma Cell Apoptosis by Oxidative Stress)

  • This study is designed to investigate cytoprotective effects of Platycodon grandiflorus (Jacq.) A.DC on C6 glioma cell apoptosis by oxidative stress. Experimental C6 glioma cells were classified into four groups as follows: normal group, PGE group, chemical groups, PGE+chemical groups. Oxidative stress that caused by chemicals in the C6 glioma cell, check the impact to Chemical group was administered normal group. Apoptotic effect protecting in order to observe the chemical group was administered PGE. We to observe effects of PGE on SOD inhibition, total glutathione production in C6 glioma cells were administered PGE. In case of administration PGE, apoptosis induced by Paraquat was significantly decreased. In case of administration PGE, apoptosis induced by SNP was significantly decreased. In case of administration PGE, apoptosis induced by $H_2O_2$ was significantly decreased. In case of administration PGE, apoptosis induced by Rotenone was decreased, but the statistical significance was not. In case of administration PGE, SOD inhibition activities significantly decreased. In case of administration PGE, Total glutathione did not affect the content. These results suggest that PGE is able to treat a disease caused by oxidative stress and prevent a aging. These results suggest that PGE is a disease caused by oxidative stress and aging, the prevention and treatment of food shall be able to be applied.

수면박탈로 유도한 Hippocampus Dentate gyrus의 산화 스트레스에 대한 백합, 연자육의 신경세포보호효과 (Neuroprotective Effect of Lilii bulbus, Nelumbins semen on the Sleep Deprivation-induced Oxidative Stress in the Hippocampus Dentate Gyrus)

  • Sleep deprivation is an extremely common event in today's society. It has caused learning cognitive skill deterioration and poor concentration, increased disease such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity, sexual function decrease, infertility increase, depression and autonomic nervous system disorder. Sleep deprivation-induced stress caused NADPH oxidase and oxidative stress. And this oxidative stress induces apoptosis. Lilii bulbus and Nelumbins semen are known to mental and physical relaxation effects. In this study, we induced sleep deprivation(SD) in Sprague-Dawley rats in water for 5 days and thereafter administered orally L. bulbus and N. semen for 5 days. Brain tissues were observed by histochemical, immunohistochemical and tunel staining. The immunoreactives of Tumor necrosis factor ${\alpha}$, Neuronal nitric oxide synthases, Phospho-SAPK/JNK and gp91-phox of the L. bulbus administered group and N. semen administered group were weaker than those of sleep deprivation group. In the L. bulbus administered group and N. semen administered group, apoptosis was decreased than that of sleep deprivation group. Proapoptotic p53, Bax, Cleaved caspase 3 immunoreactives of the administered group were weaker than those of sleep deprivation group, whereas anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 immunoreactity was stronger in the L. bulbus administered group and N. semen administered group. Antioxidant mechanism such as DJ-1, superoxide dismutase 1, Nuclear factor-like 2 immunoreactives of the L. bulbus and N. semen administered group were stronger than those of sleep deprivation group. These results demonstrate that L. bulbus, N. semen had the neuroprotective effects on the sleep deprivation-induced oxidative stress in the hippocampus.

Pyruvate Protects Giardia Trophozoites from Cysteine-Ascorbate Deprived Medium Induced Cytotoxicity

  • Giardia lamblia, an anaerobic, amitochondriate protozoan parasite causes parasitic infection giardiasis in children and young adults. It produces pyruvate, a major metabolic product for its fermentative metabolism. The current study was undertaken to explore the effects of pyruvate as a physiological antioxidant during oxidative stress in Giardia by cysteine-ascorbate deprivation and further investigation upon the hypothesis that oxidative stress due to metabolism was the reason behind the cytotoxicity. We have estimated intracellular reactive oxygen species generation due to cysteine-ascorbate deprivation in Giardia. In the present study, we have examined the effects of extracellular addition of pyruvate, during oxidative stress generated from cysteine-ascorbate deprivation in culture media on DNA damage in Giardia. The intracellular pyruvate concentrations at several time points were measured in the trophozoites during stress. Trophozoites viability under cysteine-ascorbate deprived (CAD) medium in presence and absence of extracellular pyruvate has also been measured. The exogenous addition of a physiologically relevant concentration of pyruvate to trophozoites suspension was shown to attenuate the rate of ROS generation. We have demonstrated that Giardia protects itself from destructive consequences of ROS by maintaining the intracellular pyruvate concentration. Pyruvate recovers Giardia trophozoites from oxidative stress by decreasing the number of DNA breaks that might favor DNA repair.
