Health promoting behaviors of an individual are affected by various variables. Recently, there has been a growing concern over important health problems of the middle aged women. Physiological changes in the middle aged women and their responsibility for family care can result in physical and psychological burden experienced by middle aged women. This study was designed to test Pender's model and thus purpose a model that explains health promoting behaviors among middle-aged women in Korea. The hypothetical model was developed based on the Pender's health promoting model and the findings from past studies on women's health. Data were collected by self-reported questionnaires from 863 women living in Seoul, between 20th, April and 15th, July 1995. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The Linear Structural Relationship(LISREL) modeling process was used to find the best fit model which assumes causal relationships among variables. The results are as follows : 1. The Overall fit of the hypothetical model to the data was good expect chi-square value(GFI=.96, AGFI=.91, RMR=.04). 2. Paths of the model were modified by considering both its theoretical implication and statistical significance of the parameter estimates. Compared to the hypothetical model, the revised model has become parsimonious and had a better fit to the data expect chi-square value(GFI=.95, AFGI= .92. RMR=.04). 3. Some of modifying factors, especially age, occupation, educational levels and body mass index (BMI) are revealed significant effects on health promoting behaviors. 4. Some of cognitive-perceptual factors, especially internal health locus of control, self-efficacy and perceptive health status are revealed significant effects on health promoting behaviors. 5. All predictive variables of health promoting behaviors, especially age, occupation, educational levels, body mass index(BMI), internal health locus of control, self-efficacy & perceptive health status are explained 20.0% of the total variance in the model.
This study was focused on the relationships between menstrual history and psychological variables in middle school girls. The study included 165 students. Self image, optimism and self-efficacy are measured structured questionnaires each. Statistical analysis was performed using t-test, ANOVA and Scheffe's test. The proportion of the students with bleeding period less than 7 days was higher in the group with high self image(p=.002). The self image was higher in the group who take analgesics occasionally than the group who take daily(p=.009) and in the group with irregular menstruation(p=.024). Emotional tone was higher in the group with irregular menstruation(p=.008), and psychopathology was higher in the group who take analgesics occasionally(p=.008). Family relationship was higher in the group with bleeding period less than 7 days(p=.004), in the group who take analgesics occasionally(p=.007) and in the group with irregular menstruation(p=.015). Mastery and coping was higher in the group with bleeding period less than 7 days(p=.026). Adaptation was higher in the group with irregular menstruation(p=.034). Also optimism was higher in the group with bleeding period less than 7 days(p=.005), in the group who experienced menorrhalgia a few years after menarche(p=.014) and the group with irregular menstruation(p=.027). Self-efficacy was higher in the group of polymenorrhea(p=.029). Because menstruation is related with psychiatric factors, it is necessary to ask menstruation history and psychiatric status. This study can be used in the development of the questionnaire for the oriental medical examination.
A child with five delay, five ankylosis, five weakening needs to take herbal medicine for a long term. So safety, efficacy inspection for the long term usage of herbal medicine and mixed dose is needed because other medication or functional health foods, etc could be taken during this process. Operated liver function test before and after dosing herbal medicine to one hundred and sixty children who aided private oriental medicine located in Seoul, and measured the efficacy by comparing sleeping hours, morbidity, stamina, sanguineness, personality, digestion with the state before taking herbal medicine based on questionnaire done by the parents. Every children were under the limits, and there were no differences between boys and girls, and no notable differences according to family histories. There were positive results in efficacy inspection ordered as improvement in personality, stamina, sanguineness, decrease in morbidity, increase in appetite, digestion. No signs of disorder in liver function has been found during the dose of herbal medicine or simultaneous medicine, and shown promotion of health.
Purpose: Regurgitation is a common physiological phenomenon in infants. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of a new anti-regurgitation (AR) formula (Novalac), thickened with an innovative complex including fibres, on the daily number of regurgitations and to assess its impact on stool consistency and frequency. Methods: Infants younger than five months, presenting at least 5 regurgitations per day were recruited in this trial. The efficacy of the new formula on regurgitation (daily number and Vandenplas score), stool frequency and consistency were assessed at day 14 and 90. Growth data were recorded at each study visit. Results: Ninety babies (mean age $9.6{\pm}5.8weeks$) were included in the full analysis data set. The mean number of regurgitation episodes at inclusion was $7.3{\pm}3.4$. In all infants, regurgitations improved after 2 weeks. The daily number of regurgitations decreased significantly ($-6.3{\pm}3.3$, p<0.001) including in those previously fed a thickened formula ($-6.2{\pm}3.0$, p<0.001). There was no significant change in stool consistency at day 14. After 3 months, 97.5% of infants had formed or soft stools. Growth was appropriate with a slight increase of weight-for-age z-score (from $-0.5{\pm}1.0$ to $-0.1{\pm}0.9$) and no change of weight-for length z-score ($-0.1{\pm}1.1$ to $-0.1{\pm}-1.1$). Conclusion: The new AR formula thickened with an innovative complex is very effective in reducing the daily number of regurgitations without having a negative impact on stools consistency.

The cortex and root of Acnthopanax sessiliflorus, a herbal medicine, have been used for several diseases including cancer in Oriental countries. In the previous study, we showed that the cortex of this plant have anti-cancer activity. But its therapeutic efficacy of CORTEX ACANTHOPANAX RADICIS (CAR) is not clarified. For these reasons, we investigated immuno-potentiating and anti-cancer properties of CAR compared with CA, in terms of body and tumor weights, proliferation of thymocytes and tumor cells, and nitric oxide production from macrophages through in vitro and in vivo studies. In our results, administration of CAR reduced tumor mass and increased body weights. CAR also inhibited proliferation of tumor cells in vivo and in vitro dose-dependently. Thymocyte proliferation was accelerated by treatment with CAR and NO production was also promoted by CAR in vivo and vitro. In conclusion, we demonstrated that CAR is useful to treat for cancer as complementary or alternative medicine to Western medication, its therapeutic efficacy is involved in direct inhibition of tumor growth and immuno-potentiating activity.
Background: We evaluated the changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR), and the anesthetic and hemostatic effects, after injection of 2% lidocaine containing various concentrations of epinephrine in rats and mice to determine the appropriate concentration of epinephrine in various anesthetic mixtures. Methods: Rats and mice were randomly allocated to experimental groups: 2% lidocaine without epinephrine (L0), 2% lidocaine with epinephrine 1:200,000 (L200), 1:100,000 (L100), and 1:80,000 (L80). Changes in MAP and HR after administration of the anesthetic mixture were evaluated using a physiological recording system in rats. Onset and duration of local anesthesia was evaluated by pricking the hind paw of mice. A spectrophotometric hemoglobin assay was used to quantify the hemostatic effect. Results: MAP increased in response to epinephrine in a dose-dependent manner; it was significantly higher in the L80 group than in the L0 group at 5 min post-administration. The HR was relatively lower in the L0 group than in the L80 group. The time required for onset of action was < 1 min in all evaluation groups. The duration of action and hemostatic effect of the local anesthetic were significantly better in the L200, L100, and L80 groups than in the L0 group. Conclusion: L200 demonstrated relatively stable MAP and HR values with satisfactory efficacy and hemostatic effect. L200 might be a better local anesthetic for dental patients in terms of anesthetic efficacy and safety.
Purpose: The study is examined the effects of the smoking cessation program of life skills training using flipped learning for male middle school students. Methods: The study was a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The Smoking Cessation Program of life skills training using flipped learning is a Smoking Cessation Program that applied 5 stages of flipped learning such as before class, introductory class, during class, after class, and during work. Participants were 32 male students attending a middle school in D city, with 16 in the control group and 16 in the experiment group. Data collection was conducted from February 26, 2019 to May 14, 2019 for the control group, and from May 28, 2019 to August 19, 2019 for the experiment group. The collected smoking knowledge, smoking attitude, self-efficacy, basic psychological needs, and urine cotinine were analyzed by x2 test, independent t-test, two-way repeated measured ANOVA, and Fishers exact test using the SPSS 25.0 program. Results: The experimental group showed higher smoking knowledge, smoking attitude, self-efficacy, basic psychological need, and urine cotinine negative response than the control group, and there were significant differences. Conclusion: These findings indicate that the Smoking Cessation Program of life skill training using flipped learning is an effective intervention for cessation of middle school male students, and it has a positive effect on the increase in urine cotinine, and a physiological indicator of the cessation effect, and is effective in the success of smoking cessation.
The purpose of this study is to confirm the antioxidant, black hair, and hair growth effects of the N. jatamansi, O. basilicum, and C. sativus mixed extracts that pharmacological efficacy has been verified. Accordingly, four samples (NOC-1 to-4) produced under different extraction conditions were prepared and the results are as follows. First, all samples showed an increase in antioxidant content in a concentration-dependent manner from the results of antioxidant efficacy. In particular, NOC-4 extracted by steaming and ultrasonic methods showed the highest antioxidant effect among the four samples. As a result of analysis of the amount of melanin production in mouse melanoma cells, NOC-4 with concentration of 500 ㎍/ml showed higher melanin production compared to the control group, so the black hair efficacy was the best. Also, in the hair growth test results, it was found that the hair growth was the best at 0.94 ± 0.10 mm at experimental group orally administered with 500 mg/kg of NOC-4. In addition, as a result of cytotoxicity analysis in mouse melanoma cells, the safety of samples was demonstrated by maintaining cell viability of 95% or more at all concentrations. These results suggest that the steaming and ultrasonic extraction method increased the extraction yield of active ingredients for antioxidant, melanin, and hair generation, thereby affecting physiological activity. Based on these results, if the steaming and ultrasonic extraction methods are applied to the mixed extraction of N. jatamansi, O. basilicum, and C. sativus, it is judged that the practical potential as a natural material for black hair and hair growth agents will increase.
The aim of this study was to clarify the origins of grubs which were used in the experiments, and to determine many other effects that are now written in the classical medical and herbal books. We compared the efficacy of grubs written in the herbal and medical books on the one hand, and studied the origins of grubs used in the experiments, on the other hand. The following results were obtained. There are three kinds of grub species for medicinal uses. Holorichia diomphalia Bates mainly produced in China, Cetoniidae species mainly produced in Korea, and Protaeria brevitarsis in Korean folk remedy are three species. Grubs were used in 25 experiments. Of these experiments, Holotrichia diomphalia were used 12 times, Larve of Protaeria brevitarsis 3 times, and Protaetia orientalis was used once. So, of total 25 experiments, 36%(9 experiments) did not clarify the origins of grubs used in the experiments. Currently, the grubs, which are imported from China and used in Korea, are Holotrichia diomphalia Bates from China. Current experimental study shows that grubs have efficacy for protecting liver. So the use of grubs in folk medicine is believed to be based on the scientific evidence. Efficacy of grubs, though it is not recorded in the medical books, has the effects of anti-cancer(anti-tumor), antioxidant, and anti-diabetes mellitus. The ingredients of Holotrichia are protein, peptide, fat, enzyme, mineral, and other several nutrients. Study on the grubs so far has a tendency to be done with little focus on the differen of origin of grubs. So, from now on, it needs that the origin of grubs be clarified, and the study on the efficacy from each origin be done. Considering the effects that the classical herbal books have recorded, it is necessary that more profound study proceed to prevent and treat diseases on eyes and ears, on the basis of the fact that grub has multiple ingredients to replenish the vital essence.
APA-01, which is an aqueous extract of five Chinese herbs, is a modified formula of Huoxiang-Zhengqi-San. The effect of new herb extract on immune response was investigated. The parameter examined to assess apparent immune response of APA-01 in mice included changes of body weight, relative weight of immune organs, cell proliferation and cytokine gene expression. The body weight and relative weight of immune organs were not significantly changed among the tested groups. In the spleen cell prolijeration assay, APA-01 increased the cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. Methotrexate (MTX), an agent of immune suppression, inhibited the spleen cell proliferation (IC/sub 50/: 800㎍/㎖). However, APA-01 significantly inhibited the suppression of mouse spleen cell proliferation. Therefore, it seems that APA-01 has a reducing effect of immune suppression. Immunomodulatory effect of APA-01 was further investigated using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in mouse spleen cells. In RT-PCR test, APA-01 enhanced the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) mRNA in a dose-dependent manner. In spite of immune suppression by MTX, COX-2 mRNA was induced by co-treatment with APA-01. These results suggest that APA-01 stimulates the proliferation of spleen cells, regulates the expression of COX-2 mRNA, and accelerates the recovery of inhibition of spleen cell proliferation induced by MTX, thus providing the immunological basis for clinical benefit of APA-01.
