  • Investigators have been perplexed with the thermal phenomena behind the recently discovered nanofluids, fluids with unprecedented stability of suspended nanoparticles although huge difference in the density of nanoparticles and fluid. For example, nanofluids have anomalously high thermal conductivities at very low fraction, strongly temperature-dependent and size-dependent conductivities, and three-fold higher critical heat flux than that of base fluids. Traditional conductivity theories such as the Maxwell or other macroscale approaches cannot explain why nanofluids have these intriguing features. So in this paper, we devise a theoretical model that accounts for the fundamental role of dynamic nanoparticles in nanofluids. The proposed model not only captures the concentration and temperature-dependent conductivity, but also predicts strongly size-dependent conductivity. Furthermore, we physically explain the new phenomena for nanofluids. In addition, based on a proposed model, the effects of various parameters such as the ratio of thermal conductivity of nanofluids to that of a base fluid, volume fraction, nanoparticle size, and temperature on the thermal conductivities of nanofluids are investigated.

  • Most distributed models have been developed for data interchange between model for hydrological analysis and GIS(Geographic Information System). And some interface systems between them have been developed to operate the model conveniently. This study is about developing integrated system between model and GIS not coupled system based on file interchange or interface system. In this study, HyGIS-GRM which is integrated system between GRM(Grid based Rainfall-runoff Model) which is physically based distributed rainfall-runoff model and HyGIS(Hydro Geographic Information System) have been developed. HyGIS-GRM can carry out all the processes from preparing input data to appling them to model in the same system, and this operation environment can improve the efficiency of running the model and analyzing modeling results. HyGIS-GRM can provide objective modeling environment through establishing the process of integrated operation of GIS and distributed model, and we can obtain fundamental technologies for developing integrated system between GIS and water resources model.

  • Internal air temperature of greenhouse is an important variable that can be influenced by the complex interaction between outside weather and greenhouse inside climate. This paper focuses on a data-based model approach to predict internal air temperature of the greenhouse. External air temperature, solar radiation, wind speed and wind direction were measured next to an experimental greenhouse supported by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute and used as input variables for the model. Internal air temperature was measured at the center of three sections of the greenhouse and used as an output variable. The proposed model consisted of a transfer function including the four input variables and tested the prediction accuracy according to the sampling interval of the input variables, the orders of model polynomials and the time delay variable. As a result, a second-order model was suitable to predict the internal air temperature having the predictable time of 20-30 minutes and average errors of less than ${\pm}1K$. Afterwards mechanistic interpretation was conducted based on the energy balance equation, and it was found that the resulting model was considered physically acceptable and satisfied the physical reality of the heat transfer phenomena in a greenhouse. The proposed data-based model approach is applicable to any input variables and is expected to be useful for predicting complex greenhouse microclimate involving environmental control systems.

  • The purpose of this paper is to overview a recent dispute of the library of the 21st century in Korea and to suggest a desirable model of the future library. There are two visions of the future of library. The first is an access based library model(digital library) emphasizing the digital resources that are networked and browsable electronically. The second is an ownership-based library model(paper library) which emphasize the use of traditional print collections stored locally and physically browsable. A points of dispute between the paper library as storehouse and the digital library as gateway are an electronic informations versus printed materials, access versus ownership, information professional versus librarians. The idea that library as physical place and as cyberspace are diametrically o n.0, pposed is a fallacy and surrealistic opinion. Future library has to acquire, organize, preserve, and make accessible the collections that users want and need. In other words, future libraries need both ownership and access. Access to remote electronic resources must serve as a reasonable substitute for holdings of older material. Therefore, it is a balanced solution that the more heavily used or important materials be considered for ownership and selective information resources for access. No doubt, the traditional library and the digital library will be coexist in the 21 century.

  • In recent, flood inundation damages by hydraulic structure failures have increased drastically and thus a variety of countermeasures were needed to minimize such damages. A real-time flood inundation prediction technique is essential to protect and mitigate flood inundation damages. In the context of real time flood inundation modeling, this study aims to develop a grid based two-dimensional numerical method for flood inundation modeling using globally-available DEM data: SRTM with $90m{\times}90m$ spatial resolution. The newly-developed model guarantees computational efficiency in terms of geometric data processing by direct application of DEM for flood inundation modeling and also have good compatibility with various types of raster data when compared to a commercial model such as FLUMEN. The model, which employed the leap-frog algorithm to solve shallow water and continuity equations, can simulate inundating flow from channel to lowland and also returning flow from lowland to channel by comparing water levels between channel and lowland in real time. We applied the model to simulate the BaekSan levee break in the Nam river during a flood period from August 10 to 13, 2002. The simulation results had good agreements with the field-surveyed data in terms of inundated area and also showed physically-acceptable velocity vector maps with respect to inundating and returning flows.

  • Recently, a physically based model of water-table fluctuation due to precipitation is developed based on aquifer water balance model. In the model, it was assumed that the water infiltration into ground surface is advection dominant and immediately reaches to water-table. The assumption may be suited for the sites where the water-table is shallow and/or the permeability of the unsaturated zone is high. However, there are more cases where the model is not directly applicable due to thick and low permeable unsaturated zone. For the low permeability unsaturated zone, the pattern of water flux passing through unsaturated zone is diffusive as well as advective. In this study, to improve the previously developed water-table fluctuation model, we combined the delayed drainage model, which has long been used in well hydraulics, to the water-table fluctuation model. To test the validity of the development, we apply the developed model to 5 different domestic sites. The model parameters are calibrated based on the groundwater hydrograph and the precipitation time series, and the correlation analyses among the parameters are pursued. The overall analyses on the delineated model parameters indicate that the delayed drainage parameters or delay index used in the developed model are able to reveal drainage information in the unsaturated zones.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate observed runoff data collected every 10 minutes at stream gauging stations in Jeju Island using a physically-based model, SWAT. The Hancheon watershed was selected as study area, and ephemeral stream algorithm suggested by previous research was incorporated into the model, which is able to simulate ephemeral runoff pattern of Jeju streams. Simulated runoff and runoff rates were compared to observations during 2008-2013, which showed 'very good' performance rating in Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (ME) and determination coefficient ($R^2$). Some observations had problems such that runoff rates were very high for some rainfall events with little amount of antecedent rainfall, and were very low or missing with much rainfall comparing to previous researches. Additionally, regression equation between precipitation and simulated runoff was generated with high degree of correlation. The equation can be utilized to simply predict reasonable runoff, or to investigate and complement the abnormal or missing data of observations on the assumption that modelling results were sufficiently reliable and satisfactory. As results, minimizing the error in calibrating the model by evaluation of observed data would be helpful to accurately model the rainfall-runoff characteristics and analyze the water balance components of watersheds in Jeju Island.

  • In this study, rainfall-runoff analysis was performed for Yongdam watershed($930km^2$) using KOWACO flood analysis model based on Storage Function Method as lumped hydrologic model and Vflo which was developed for real-time flood prediction by University of Oklahoma. The results shows that, the hydrographs of lumped and distributed model with uncalibrated parameters which estimated from physical or experimental relationship show significant biases from observed hydrographs. However, the hydrograph at Cheoncheon site from the distributed model follows the actual hydrograph to an extent that no more calibration is necessary. It encourages that distributed model can have advantages for application in real-time flood forecasting as physically based distributed hydrologic model which can construct event-independent basin parameter group.

  • In this study, computational structural vibration analysis of helicopter search light exposing unsteady buffet load have been conducted using combined advanced numerical methods. Unsteady CFD method based on Navier-Stokes equations is used to predict viscous buffet load due to flow separation effects. Full three-dimensional finite element model is constructed in order to conduct static and structural dynamic analyses of the search light model for two different typical flight speeds. Also, the correct performance of the search light can be physically estimated to examine the actual lighting area considering the effects of structural deformations.

  • Accurate equivalent circuit modeling using multi-circuit optimization has been perfomred for detemining small-signal model of AlGaAs/GaAs HBTs. Three equivalent circuits for a cutoff biasing and two active biasing at different curretns are optimized simultaneously to fit gheir S parameters under the physics-based constrain that current-dependent elements for one of active circuits are connected to those for another circit multiplied by the ratio of two currents. The cutoff mode circuit and the physical constrain give the advantage of extracting physically acceptable parameters, because the number of unknown variables. After this optimization, three ses of optimized model S-parameters agree well with their measured S-parameters from 0.045 GHz to 26.5GHz.
