  • The purpose of this study is to examine the problems of the each cataloging rules about the physical description area that generated the greatest controversy in the cataloging of microcomputer software, and to suggest solutions of these problems. The results of the study can be summarized as follows: 1. Because the physical description area of materials is to identify the physical attributes of the carrier, file description might better described in the material specific details area. 2. Integrated software that related file is linked together need to be used terms that represented any type of software 3. It is desirable that the term 'computer' is to be used as a modifier to devide the carrier of microcomputer and other non book materials. 4. System requirements would better described in a note area rather than physical, description area. 5. It is desirable that other physical details such as recording density, tracks, etc., is to describe in the physical description area, since such information is to represent specifics of the carrier.

  • This study investigates the mutual effects of the physical environment and the characteristics of user's need in the children's libraries of open plan type. The children's library as a flexible space should accept user's diverse needs. Especially, Children express more positive and diverse behaviors than adults in physical environment. As the design information obtained from observation of children's behaviors are put to architectural design, the more affluent environment in which children can do positive behaviors can be made. We used two research methods of the behavior observation and interview for the children's library, and could formulate various using actions through the behavior setting observation for using library. A relational description for reading environment in this study, based on the affordance and the behavior setting theories, provided us with rich accounts for the psychological and sociocultural resources in the children's library. Consequently, the following results can be summarized. First, children need territories for family use and for place and are using library effectively through taking the two territories. Second, the zoning according to age category should be done, as behavior patterns were observed differently according to age. Third, the space composition with openness should be designed, as children need social relation and learning through imitation and observation.

  • This study examines user satisfaction and information behavior of information commons in the National Digital Library (NDL) of Korea through survey method. It analyzed service quality factors that affect the overall user satisfaction, and users' information behavior according to the physical spaces/facilities in the information commons. User satisfaction factors were developed to measure library satisfaction in all aspects of the eleven physical spaces/facilities of information commons service, and information behavior on eleven physical spaces/facilities in information commons were explored by users' character. According to survey findings, overall level of user satisfaction was maintained highly since the beginning of NDL. In particular, the facility of 'Productivity Computer Cluster' was ranked highest as 83.8 and the 'UCC Studio' was ranked lowest as 70.8 among the eleven facilities in information commons.

  • Looseleaf publications are truly a unique type of library material, partaking simultaneously of the nature of serials and monographs. Therefors, two disparate methods of cataloging looseleaf publications coexist today. But the decision to catalog looseleaf publications as serials as monographs affects the acquisition, budget allocation, receipt, record maintenance, and user access. In view of these aspects, this study analyzed the sources of information and seven areas of description (title and statement of responsibility ; edition ; publication, distribution, etc. ; physical description; series ; note ; standard number and terms of availability) of CRDLP2 as the exclusive cataloging rules of looseleaf publications. The results of the analysis were summarized in chapter 4 in detail. Finally, it is desirable that looseleaf publications for updationg are cataloged as monographs since the bibliographic description applied to looseleaf publications follows so colosely that of monographs. And, the cataloger must pay partioular attention to describe the physical description area because of numerous changes of the bibliographic records accompanied by frequent revisions or updates of the publications.

  • The purpose of this study is to ascertain librarian's perceptions on their users' library access and its patterns. Interviews with seven library staff reveal physical accessibility issues including spatial relationships between libraries and other facilities such as shopping malls and schools, travel distance, transportation mode, and temporal perspectives of library access. The results from the interviews corroborate the findings from secondary analysis using household travel data. However, interviewees do not have a clear picture of how much their users travel and spend to access their libraries. This is true, even though these factors are critical to analyze physical accessibility. Based on the findings, this study makes recommendations to improve the accessibility of public libraries. Suggestions include the concept of sponsorships with other facilities, the placing of material drop-boxes on the main route, and providing library programs during lunch time.

And then, the older persons' physical standard sizes in 'Size Korea(1997)' are researched and reconfigured. The study has selected the 10 kinds in such facilities as followed : Door, Accessible Route, Stair, Elevator, Escalator, Ramp, Toilet Stall, Urinal, Table, and Post Box. As the result, the study has identified the relevancies of each facilities based on the older persons's physical standard sizes.

  • The library space has historically been influenced by the change of its information and social environment. This paper describes the effect of ubiquitous environment on the library's space, by literature review, case analysis. and focus-group interview of 5 undergraduate students. The results show that the library's physical place is still important for users, and suggest the library information space design and management need to reflect the open-ness and the interactive-ness of the ubiquitous space.
