An experimental study for a crane hook was performed to investigate the stress distribution along a certain line where the maximum and minimum stresses to be developed. On this line, the isoclinic fringe and/or principal stress direction is constant. The crane hook was modeled into a 2-dimensional plate made of urethane rubber called 'Photoflex' The Photoflex is very sensitive to a load and has low photoelastic fringe constant. The Tardy compensation method with the fringe sharpening process and the 4-step phase shifting method, was used for the photoelastic technique. Experimental results by photoelasticity were compared with the calculated stresses from the simple curved beam theory and tile finite element analysis. Ail the results were close to each other.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distribution at supporting bone according to the types of endosseous implants. This investigation evaluated the stress patterns in rectangular photoelastic models produced by four different types of dental implants such as $Br\ddot{a}nemark$, screw type of Steri-Oss, blade type of Steri-Oss, IMZ with IMC and resin tooth using the techniques of quasi-three dimensional photoelasticity. All prostheses were casted in the same nonprecious alloy and were cemented or screwed on their respective implants and abutments. 20 kg of vertical load was applied on the central fossa of casted crown and 16 kg of inclined had was applied on the top third of distal surface of casted crown respectively. The results were as follows : 1. Under the vertical load, screw implants of Steri-Oss and $Br\ddot{a}nemark$ showed increasing stress condition between and around the screw threads along the implant lateral surface and cylindrical implant of IMZ showed the less stress condition along the lateral surface with concentration of stress mostly near the root apex. 2. Under the vertical load, the stress of Steri-Oss blade was distributed uniformly at the alveolar bone under the broad blade. 3. Under the inclined load, the stress concentration of Steri-Oss screw and $Br\ddot{a}nemark$ was developed highly around the mesiocervical bone area on the contralateral side to force application. The stress of $Br\ddot{a}nemark$ with flexible gold glod was more concentrated in the cervical bone area than that of Steri-Oss with stiff screw. 4. Under the inclined load, the stress of Steri-Oss blade broadly was distributed around the mesioceivical bone area and the lower and mesial bone area of the blade. 5. Under the Inclined load, IMZ implant showed the gap between c개wn and fixture due ta deformation of the IMC and IMZ was lower in stress concentration developed around the mesiocervical bone area than $Br\ddot{a}nemark$ and Steri-Oss screw. 6. Under the inclined load, the stress magnitude induced in the mesiocervical bone area of implants was in order of $Br\ddot{a}nemark$, Steri-Oss strew, IMZ and Stsri-Oss blade. 7. Tilting forces as compared to axial forces exerted greater magnitude of stress in the cervical bone area of the implant. 8. In respect of stress distribution, Steri-Oss blade was superior than any other implants and in respect of the stability by horizontal lone, IMB and $Br\ddot{a}nemark$ was inferior than any other implants.

The distinct element method is improved to consider the charateristics of stress wave propagation in media involving the discontinuous faces. The distinct element method has many advantages to analyse the characteristics of the reflection, refraction and deflection of the waves in nonhomogeneous media. The double-suing connection system is adopted instead of the single-spring connection system because the distinct element cannot be used for analysing the contact behavior between the different materials by only one contact spring. For the verification of the improved code, the results of the numerical analysis are compared with that of the photoelastic experiments which are one or two dimensional wave propagation problem of the nonhomogeneous media including the different accoustic impendence material or voids. It is shown that the characteristics of the stress wave propagation in nonhomogeneous media can be simulated appropriately using the improved distinct element method.
The break of rotary blade is occured from a stress concentration of the inside of blade by the outside impulsive load. In order to examine its inside stress and stress concentration of rotary blade, a epoxy plate which is suitable to applicate by photoelastic system is used to experiment. These results are summarized as follow. 1. Refer to the existence of bolt hole and a size of its of rotary blade, a stress concentration which cause the break of rotary blade is not exposed. 2. It is expected to be break to section of hold of rotary blade and the break of this is due to that there are concentrated by shearing force, bending moment and bending stress. 3. When the crack which caused from processing are set up to any location, the stress concentration taken to the creak point. 4. Without regard to the location of the reaction points of rotary blade, the bending stress which is greated than the bending moment is occured within about 6 em toward the center line of bolt hole and it was possible to break that section.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stress distributions in the surrounding tissues of the teeth seated by indirect retainers in three different teeth of unilateral distal extension partial denture when the dislodging forces were applied on denture bases. Three dimensional photoelastic models were made. The teeth on which indirect retainers were seated were mandibular left lateral incisor (Model I), canine (Model II), and first premolar (Model III). The dislodging force with 860mg at $45^{\circ}$ angulation to occlusal plane was applied to each model. Three dimensional photoelastic stress analysis was done, and the records were diagramed and analysed. The results were as follows : The compressive stresses were shown the most on neck portions of buccal, mesial, and distal sides in all three models. Slight tensile stresses were shown on neck portions of lingual sides in all three models. The compressive stresses on buccal side were shown in strength in such order as model I, model II, and model III. The compressive stresses were shown on neck portion of mesial and distal sides of model I and mode II, with model I more than Model II. The compressive stresses were shown only on neck portion of mesial side on Model III. The general overall magnitude of compressive stresses were shown in strength in such order as Model I, Model II, and Model III.

This paper presents stress distribution around a central crack tip in a tensile plate using phase-shifting photoelasticity and a power series stress function. Isochromatic data along the straight lines far from the crack tip were obtained by phase shifting photoelasticity and were used as input data of the hybrid experimental analysis. By using the complex-type power series stress equations, the photoelastic stress distribution fields in the vicinity of the crack and the mode I stress intensity factor were obtained. With the help of image processing software, accuracy and reliability was enhanced by twice multiplying and sharpening the measured isochromatics. Actual and reconstructed fringes were compared qualitatively. For quantitative comparison, percentage errors and standard deviations of the percentage errors were calculated for all measured input data by varying the number of terms in the stress function. The experimental results agreed with those predicted by finite element analysis and empirical equation within 2 percent error.

The strain gage, holographic and photoelastic analysis etc. have been used for stress analysis of prosthesis, orthodontic or orthopedic appliances and filling materials. But these methods has some limitation in analyzing the internal stress. The Finite Element Analysis has been proved to compensate this defect and widely used in this area. The purpose of this study was to compare the stress distributions of the various temporary filling methods being used in pulpotomy procedure. Three different models were designed according to temporary filling material and method: amalgam filling with ZOE base(Model I), amalgam filling with ZPC sub-base and ZOE(Model II), IRM filling only(Model III). The results of the experiment were as follows: 1. In model I under the load case 6 and 1, the significant stress was shown to be concentrated on the buccal portion of crown. 2. Model II showed the similar pattern of stress distribution to Model I. 3. In model III under load case 2, the stress was mainly distributed on the buccal cusp tip and buccal margin of filling material. In same model under the load case 3, the stress was distributed on the lingual cusp tip. 4. Based on the above data, IRM can be assumed to have advantage over the other tested materials in reducing the incidence of crown fracture by localized the stress within the filling materials.
This study was executed to analyze the stress distribution of tooth, supporting structure and overdenture by two-dimensional photoelastics when 6 types of coping were inserted. Types of coping were designed to be inclined plane, short dome, medium dome, shore square, medium square and o-p anchor attachment. Fortes were applied respectively as follows: 1) Vertical load of 10 kg on the incisal edge 2) $30^{\circ}$ diagonal load of 8 kg on the labial surface. The results were as follows: 1. In case of short dome and o-p anchor attachment, the stress is evenly distributed on teeth, supporting tissue structure under vertical and $30^{\circ}$ diagonal load, then short dome and o-p anchor attachment show better stress distribution and stabilization of overdenture than any other coping under labial diagonal load. 2. Inclined plane revealed greater tendency of displacement of overdenture than any other coping under labial diagonal load. 3. Long height of copings had greater concentration of stress than short height of copings. 4. In case of medium dome under labial diagonal load, there were high level of stress concentration on denture base contacted labioincisal angle of coping.
For the purpose of evaluating the effect of both direct retainer design and bony absorption degree around abutment of indirect retainer on the supporting tissue of abutment of indirect retainer, dislodging force was transmitted to unilateral distal extension RPD bases. Analysis of stress distributed within the supporting tissue around abutment of indirect retainer was carried out. Using three-dimensional photoelastic stress analysis method and the conclusion is a follows. 1. According to the extent of force which the direct retainer of the most distal abutment tooth, the amount of force transmitted to the abutment tooth of indirect retainer was small. 2. Of all the cases, Mandibular first premolar which was used abutment tooth of indirect retainer, buccal, mesial and distal sides represented compression stress and lingual side represented tensile stress. 3. The more bone resorption of abutment tooth of indirect retainer, the more distortion of buccal and distal side of abutment tooth was existed and the extent of compression stress which was existed and distal side to abutment tooth was large. 4. When the alveolar bone around the abutment with indircet retainer is normal. The amount of force transmitted on abutment with indirect retainer was small in the order of Akers clasp, RPA clasp, RPI clasp. 5. When the alveolar bone around the abutment with indirect retainer has been absorbed 20% and 30%, the amount of force transmitted on abutment with indirect retainer was small in the order of RPA calsp, RPI clasp, Akers clasp. 6. When denture is displaced, shape of the direct retainer reciprocating abutment affect much the function of indirect retainer.
The purpose of this study was to analize the initial stress distribution around apex and the alveolar bone of the upper anterior teeth when applying intrusive force by the use of utility arthwire, Burstono 3-piece infusion archwire, and 'J' hook headgear which is usually used in clinital practice. By the use of the polarization plate, initial stresses were analized when 80g and 150g forte applied. The results were as follows. 1. With the utility archwire, moderate levels of stress were evenly distributed on the apical areas of the anterior teeth and concentrated on the apical areas of the first molars. 2. With the Burstone's 3-piece intrusion archwire, moderate levels of stress were evenly distributed on the apical areas of the anterior and posterior teeth. 3. With the 'J' hook headgear, severe levels oi stress were widely distributed on the alveolar bone and apical areas of the upper anterior teeth, and concentrated on the apical area between the central and the lateral incisors. Especially, weak levels of stress appeared along the periodontal ligament space of all teeth.
