  • The dihydroxy naphthalene/$TiO_2$ complexes with different substitution patterns were prepared by surface modification. X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the prepared composite materials. The results indicated that the surface modification did not influence the crystallization of $TiO_2$. The visible-light absorbances of prepared dihydroxy naphthalene/$TiO_2$ complexes could be assigned to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer. The obtained catalyst exhibited outstanding photocatalytic activity and stability under visible light. A linear relationship existed between the percentages of hydroxynaphthalenes coordinated on $TiO_2$ surface and $H_2$ production ability. The substitution pattern of dihydroxy naphthalene and $CH_3OH$ content could also influence the photocatalytic performance remarkably. The photocatalytic $H_2$ production ability was further improved after loading with ultra low concentration of Pt, 0.02 wt %. The possible mechanism was proposed.

  • In recent years, much attention has been paid to "Photocatalytic oxidation" as an alternative technique, where the pollutants are degraded by UV-irradiation in the presence of a semiconductor suspension such as titanium dioxide. $TiO_2$ is the most often used photocatalyst due to its considerable photocatalytic activity, high stability, non-environmental impact and low cost. 1n this research, the photocatalytic degradation of humic acid, acetaldehyde and methylene blue in $UV/TiO_2$ systems has been stydied. The effect of calcination temperature for manufacturing of $TiO_2$ photocatalysts and type of photocatalysts on photodegradation has been investigated. Photocatalysts with various metal ions(Mn, Fe, Cu and Pt) loading are tested to evaluate the effects of metal ions impurities on photodegradation. The photodegradation efficiency with $Pt-TiO_2$ or $Fe-TiO_2$ or $Cu-TiO_2$ is higher than Degussa P-25 powder. However, the photodegradation efficiency with $Mn-TiO_2$ is lower than Degussa P-25 powder. The photocatalytic properties of the nanocrystals were strongly dependent upon the crystallinity, particle size, standard reduction potential of various transition metal and electronegativity of various transition metal. As a result photocatalysts with various metal ion loading evaluated the effect of photodegradation.

  • We have investigated the photocatalytic activity for the decomposition of methyl orange on the pure $LaCoO_3$ and metal ion doped $LaCoO_3$ perovskite-typeoxides prepared using microwave process. In the case of pure $LaCoO_3$ and cesium ion doped $LaCoO_3$ catalysts, the formation of the perovskite crystalline phase was confirmed regardless of the preparation method. From the results of UV-Vis DRS, the pure $LaCoO_3$ and cesium ion doped $LaCoO_3$ catalysts have the similar absorption spectrum up to visible region. The chemisorbed oxygen plays an important role on the photocatalytic decomposition of methyl orange and the higher the contents of chemisorbed oxygen, the better performance of photocatalyst.

  • Dispersion stabilities and photocatalytic activities of rutile $TiO_{2}$ powders with unique nano-structure synthesized by homogeneous precipitation process at low temperature(HPPLT) have been investigated in the acrylic resin containing fluorostyrene in the range of 0~0.16 mole. Isoelectric point of $TiO_{2}$ in the acrylic resin placed in the neutral region whereas that of $TiO_{2}$ in the water placed in the acidic region, indicating that zeta potential and agglomeration of $TiO_{2}$ powder is strongly dependent on the pH and the type of solvent. To prepare an adhesion, an acrylic resin containing fluorostyrene was synthesized by a radical polymerization. The adhesion of coating layer was increased with increasing fluorostyrene's contents without changing the dispersion stabilities and degrading photocatalytic properties.

  • To improve photocatalytic efficiency, graphene/Ag/TiO2 nanotube catalyst was synthesized, and its surface characteristics and photocatalytic activity investigated. For deposition of Ag nanoparticles on the TiO2 nanotubes, a polymer compound containing CH3COOAg/poly(L-lactide) was utilized, and the silver particles were precipitated by reducing the silver ions during the annealing process. Graphene deposition on the Ag/TiO2 nanotubes was achieved using an electrophoretic deposition process. Based on the dye degradation results, it was determined that the photocatalytic efficiency was significantly affected by deposition of silver particles and graphene on the TiO2 catalyst. Highly efficient destruction of the dye was obtained with the new graphene/Ag/TiO2 nanotube photocatalyst. This may be attributed to a synergistic effect of the graphene and Ag nanoparticles on the TiO2 nanotubes.

  • The immobilization technique is important to extend the application field of a photocatalyst. Titanium surface was changed into a $TiO_2$ thin film by the anodizing process. The anodized $TiO_2$ had photocatalytic activity, and showed sponge like shape. The photocatalytic degradation of gas phase acetaldehyde and VOCs by anodized titania has been studied in various initial concentrations, humidity and discharge potentials. The reactivity of anodized titania was increased with relative humidity, but excessive humidity led to a decrease of the reaction rate. The electric dark discharge that was combined with photocatalytic reaction enhanced the decomposition rate of the organic compounds. But excessively applied voltage caused corona discharge, which decreased the reaction rate. Optimum relative humidity was 40% and discharge potential was 5 kV under dark discharge region in photocatalytic reaction.

  • The cuprous oxide cubes with the special porous surface constructed by nano-prisms have been successfully fabricated by a solvothermal method. The template-free method is simple and facile without any surfactant. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) pattern suggests that the as-prepared product is the pure primitive cubic $Cu_2O$. The effects of the experimental parameters, such as the reaction temperature, reaction time and the concentration of sodium acetate anhydrous, on the morphologies of the products were investigated in detail by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Based on the time-dependent experiments, the possible formation mechanism was proposed. Using photocatalytic degrading reactive dyes as the model reaction and xenon lamp to simulate sunlight, the $Cu_2O$ cubes with the porous surface might possess higher photocatalytic activity than those of the commercial $Cu_2O$ powder in the visible-light region, indicating the excellent photocatalytic performance.

  • Fe-fullerene/$TiO_2$ composite photocatalysts were prepared with titanium (IV) n-butoxide (TNB) by a sol-gel method. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscope (TEM), specific surface area (BET), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The photocatalytic activities were evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) solution. XRD patterns of the composites showed that the Fe-fullerene/$TiO_2$ composite contained a typical single and clear anatase phase. The surface properties shown by SEM present a characterization of the texture on Fe-fullerene/$TiO_2$ composites and showed a homogenous composition in the particles for the titanium sources used. The EDX spectra for the elemental identification showed the presence of C and Ti with strong Fe peaks for the Fe-fullerene/$TiO_2$ composite. From the photocatalytic results, the excellent activity of the Fe-fullerene/$TiO_2$ composites for degradation of methylene blue under UV light irradiation could be attributed to both the effects between photocatalytic reaction of the supported $TiO_2$, decomposition of the organometallic reaction by the Fe compound and energy transfer effects such as electron and light of the fullerene.

  • A heterogeneous photocatalytic system is attracting much interest for water and air purification because of its reusability and economical advantage. Electrospun nanofibers are also receiving immense attention for efficient photocatalysts due to their ultra-high specific surface areas and aspect ratios. In this study, ZnO nanofibers with average diameters of 71, 151 and 168 nm are successfully synthesized by facile electrospinning and a subsequent calcination process at $500^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. Their crystal structures, morphology features and optical properties are systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The photocatalytic activities of the ZnO nanofibers are evaluated by the photodegradation of a rhodamine B aqueous solution. The results reveal that the diameter of the nanofiber, controlled by changing the polymer content in the precursor solution, plays an important role in the photocatalytic activities of the synthesized ZnO nanofibers.
