Currently, the application of $TiO_2$ photocatalyst has been focused on purification and treatment of wastewater. However, the use of conventional $TiO_2$ slurry photocatalyst results in disadvantage of stirring during the reaction and of separation after the reaction. And the usage of artificial UV lamp has made the cost of photocatalyst treatment system high. Consequently, we studied that solar light/$TiO_2$ film system was designed and developed in order to examine disinfection characteristics of sewage wastewater treatment. The optimum conditions for disinfection such as solar light intensity, characteristic of sewage wastewater, amounts of $TiO_2$ and comparison of solar ligth/$TiO_2$ systems with UV light/$TiO_2$ system was examined. The results are as follows: (1) photocatalytic disinfection process with solar light in the presence of $TiO_2$ film more effectively killed total coliform (TC) than solar light or $TiO_2$ film absorption only. (2) The survival ratio of TC and residual ratio of organic material (BOD, CODcr) decreased with remain resistant material. (3) The survival ratio of TC and residual ratio of organic material (BOD, CODcr) decreased with the increase of amounts of $TiO_2$. (4) TC survival ratio decreased linearly with increasing UV light intensity. (5) The disinfection effect of solar light/$TiO_2$ slurry system decreased more than UV light/$TiO_2$ film systems. (6) The disinfection reaction followed first-order kinetics. We suggest that solar light instead of using artificial UV light was conducted to investigate the applicability of alternative energy source in the disinfection of TC and the degradation of organic material.
Food wastewater derived from three-stages methane fermentation system showed high concentrations of sCOD, T-N and $NH_{3}-N$. To treat the organic wastewater, the optimal operating conditions for high efficiency $UV/TiO_{2}$ photocotalytic system have been investigated. In the first process, wastewater was pre-treated with $FeCl_{3}. The optimum pH and concentration for coagulation were 4.0 and 2000 mg/L, respectively. Through this process, 52.6% of $COD_{cr}$ was removed. The second process was $UV/TiO_{2}$ photocatalytic reaction. The optimum conditions for the operation of $UV/TiO_{2}$ photocatalytic system developed in this lab have been studied. In this process, CODcr was removed from 2890 to 184 mg/L and T-N was removed from 2496 to 914 for 24 hours, respectively.
$TiO_2$ shows considerably efficient photoreaction activity under the ultraviolet range but it has disadvantage that there is no activity in the visible light range. In this study, it was tried to find a solution for the problem of this kind of photocatalyst by utilizing transition metal, which can show electronic transition with $TiO_2$ in the visible light area. Photocatalyst was prepared, which can have photocatalytic activity in the wide wavelength range, not only ultraviolet region but also visible light area and prevent the combination of electron and hole hindering the photoreaction. For this purpose, by using the ion exchange method, $TiO_2$ precursor and transition metal precursor were dipped into H typed strong acid ion-exchange resin. And two kind photocatalysts (Ti-M-SCM) in which transition metal and titanium dioxide coexist through the carbonization/activation process was prepared. Moreover, photolytic reaction under the wavelength 254 nm and 365 nm was performed for humic acid (HA) in the continuous reactor in order to estimate the efficiency of produced Ti-M-SCM.

The evaluation of the corrosion resistance of titanium with a TiO2 nanotubes top layer was carried out (TiO2 NT). These nanostructures were evolved into anatase nanoparticles without heat treatment in an aqueous medium, which is a novel phenomenon. This work analyzes the layer between the nanotube bottom and the substrate, which is thin and still susceptible to corrosion. The bottom of TiO2 nanotubes having Fluor resulting from the synthesis process changed between amorphous to crystalline anatase with a crystallite size of about 4 nm, which influenced the corrosion rates. Four kinds of samples were evaluated. A) NT by Ti anodizing; B) NTSB for Ti plates, either modifying its surface or anodizing the modified surface; C) NT-480 for anodized Ti and heat-treated (480℃) for reaching the anatase phase; D) NTSB-480 for Ti plates, first, modifying its surface using sandblast, after that, anodizing the modified surface, and finally, heat-treated to 480℃ to compare with samples having induced crystallization and passivation. Four electrochemical techniques were used to evaluate the corrosion rates. The surfaces having TiO2 nanotubes with a sandblast pre-treatment had the highest resistance to corrosion.
$SnO_{2}$-doped anatase type $TiO_{2}$ powder was prepared by the polymerization complex route from tin(IV) bis (acetylacetonate) dichloride, titanium diisopropoxide bis (acetylacetonate) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a complexing agent. The structural changes of reaction mixture were monitored by fourier transform infarared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The microstructure and morphology of gel powder were studied by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The photocatalytic activity of these powders with the anatase structure was investigated by using indigo carmine solution.

This research investigates the application of ZnO (zinc oxide) nanoparticles and $TiO_2$ (titanium dioxide) nanoparticles to polypropylene nonwoven fabrics via an electrospinning technique for the development of textile materials that can decompose harmful gases. To fabricate uniform ZnO nanocomposite fibers, two types of ZnO nanoparticles were applied. Colloidal $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were chosen to fabricate $TiO_2$ nano- composite fibers. ZnO/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and $TiO_2$/PVA nanocomposite fibers were electrospun under a variety of conditions that include various feed rates, electric voltages, and capillary diameters. The morphology of electrospun nanocomposite fibers was examined with a field-emission scanning electron micro- scope and a transmission electron microscope. Decomposition efficiency of gaseous materials (formaldehyde, ammonia, toluene, benzene, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide) by nanocomposite fiber webs with 3wt% nano-particles (ZnO or $TiO_2$) and 7$g/m^2$ web area density was assessed. This study shows that ZnO nanoparticles in colloid were more suitable for fabricating nanocomposite fibers in which nanoparticles are evenly dispersed than in powder. A heat treatment was applied to water-soluble PVA nanofiber webs in order to stabilize the electrospun nanocomposite fibrous structure against dissolution in water. ZnO/PVA and $TiO_2$/PVA nanofiber webs exhibited a range of degradation efficiency for different types of gases. For nitrogen dioxide, the degradation efficiency was 92.2% for ZnO nanocomposite fiber web and 87% for $TiO_2$ nanocomposite fiber web after 20 hours of UV light irradiation. The results indicate that ZnO/PVA and $TiO_2$/PVA nano- composite fiber webs have possible uses in functional textiles that can decompose harmful gases.
Ozonation was investigated for its ability to remove pyruvic acid in a laboratory-scale batch reactor under various experimental conditions, including UV irradiation, TiO2 addition, and variations in temperature. An ozone flow rate of 1.0 L min-1 and a concentration of 75±5 mg L-1 were maintained throughout the experiment, and pH, COD, and TOC were measured at 10 min intervals during a 60 min reaction. Our results confirmed that the combination of UV irradiation and photocatalytic TiO2 in the ozonation reaction improved the removal efficiency of both COD and TOC in aqueous solution at 20℃. Pseudo first-order rate constants and activation energies were quantified based on the COD and TOC measurements. We observed that the O3/UV, O3/UV/TiO2 system increased mineralization and reduced the activation energy (Ea) necessary for pyruvic acid decomposition.
In this study, $TiO_2$ nanotubes with different morphologies were prepared in the electrolyte consisting of ethylene glycol, ammonium fluoride($NH_4F$), and deionized water($H_2O$) by controlling the voltage and time in the anodization method. Thicknesses and pore sizes of these $TiO_2$ nanotubes were measured to interpret the relationship between anodization conditions and $TiO_2$ nanotube morphologies. Element contents in the $TiO_2$ nanotubes were detected for further analysis of $TiO_2$ nanotube characteristics. Photoelectrolyticdecolorization efficiencies of the $TiO_2$ nanotube plates with various morphologies were tested to clarify the morphology that a highly active $TiO_2$ nanotube plate should have. Influences of applied voltage in photoelectrolysis processes and sodium sulfate($Na_2SO_4$) concentration in wastewater on the decolorization efficiency were also studied. To save the equipment investment cost in photoelectrolysis methods, a two-photoelectrode system that uses the $TiO_2$ nanotube plates as photoanode and photocathode instead of adding other counter electrodes was studied. Compared with single-photoelectrode system that uses the $TiO_2$ nanotube plate as photoanode and titanium plate as cathode on the view of the treatment of dye wastewater containing different amounts of salt. As a result, a considerably suitable voltage was strictly needed for enhancing the photoelectrolyticdecolorization effect of the two-photoelectrode system but if salts exist in wastewater, an excellent increase in the decolorization efficiency can be obtained.

To effectively destruct 2-chlorophenol, a representative sterile preservative, nanometer-sized Mn (0.5, 1.0, 3.0 mol %)-incorporated $TiO_2$ powders were synthesized by a solvothermal method. XRD result demonstrated that the Mn ingredients were perfectly inserted into $TiO_2$ framework. The Mn-$TiO_2$ particles exhibited an anatase structure with a particle size of below 20 nm. The absorbance was shifted to the higher wavelength on Mn-$TiO_2$ compared to that of $TiO_2$. Otherwise, the PL intensities which has a close relationship for recombination between holes and electrons significantly decreased on Mn-$TiO_2$. The photodecomposition for 2-chlorophenol in a liquid system was enhanced over Mn-doped $TiO_2$ compared with pure $TiO_2$: 2-chlorophenol of 50 ppm was completely decomposed after 12 h when 1.0 mol % Mn-$TiO_2$ was used. Consequently, the core of this paper is as follows. introducing Mn into $TiO_2$ framework reduced the band-gap, moreover, it played as an electron capture resulted to lower recombination between electrons and holes during photocatalytic reaction for removal of 2-cholophenol.

This study investigates the photoelectrochemical behavior of STS304 steel with TiO2 thin films coating, applied by sol-gel mehod, for the purpose of cathodic photoprotection of the steel corrosion. One time TiO2-coated STS304 steel, adapted with two kinds of TiO2 sol solution, has the most dominant photopotential abilities, which was -200mV vs. SCE and -500mV vs. SCE under illumination with 40 W fluorescent lamp, respectively. That had yielded more negative values than the corrosion potential of the bare metal(-130mv vs.SCE). The bleaching of TCE was confirmed on TiO2-coated STS304 steel under UV-illumination with 20W Black-light. This Study concluded that Ti02-coated STS304 exhibited both a cathodic photoprotection effect against corrosion and a photocatalytic self-cleaning effect.
