  • Experimental research on the preparation of photocatalyst for the decomposition of brilliant blue FCF ($C_{37}H_{31}O_9N_2S_3Na_2$) was performed. $TiO_2$ and ZnO powders were prepared from titanium (IV) sulfate and zinc acetate at low reaction temperature and atmospheric pressure by hydrothermal precipitation method without calcination. In addition, $TiO_2$ was prepared with cationic surfactant CTAB (Hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide) at the same conditions. The physical properties of prepared $TiO_2$ and ZnO, such as crystallinity, average particle size and absorbance, were investigated by XRD, Zeta-potential meter and DRS. And, the photocatalytic degradation of brilliant blue FCF has been studied in the batch reactor under UV radiation. For the photocatalysts prepared without CTAB, $TiO_2$ has smaller particle size and larger absorbance and photocatalytic reaction rate than ZnO. And $TiO_2$, prepared with CTAB whose concentration is 1/10 of that of precursor, shows 15% higher than that prepared without CTAB in final photocatalytic degradation ratio of brilliant blue FCF.

  • Up to now, microstructure changes of photocatalysts have been studied to improve photocatalytic activity. Especially, to improve the adsorption of reactants and reactive sites, porous and fine crystal structures have received much attention because of their large specific surface area. In this study, $TiO_2$ nanotubes were synthesized by hydrothermal method using $TiO_2$ nanoparticles; nanotubes were evaluated by oxidized methylene blue reduction test. Using synthesized $TiO_2$ nanotubes, results of TEM showed that the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were changed into folding sheets and nanotubes. XRD results showed that the peaks of the nanoparticles almost disappeared and only the rutile (110) and anatase (200) peaks were observed. Comparison of photocatalytic properties of nanoparticles and nanotube structures was performed by measuring the UV-vis absorbance with reducing oxidized methylene blue. As a result, the reduction rate of nanotubes was found to be $0.24{\mu}mol/s$, which was 2.6 times higher than the rate of reduction of nanoparticles.

  • To date, nanostructured tungsten oxides with a variety of stoichiometries, such as WO3, WO2.9, W18O49, and WO2, have been prepared, because they are promising candidates for applications such as gas sensors, photocatalysts, electrochromic devices, and field emission devices. Among them, W18O49 and WO2 have been widely studied due to their outstanding chemical sensing, catalytic, and electron emissive properties. Here we report, for the first time, a one-pot solution-phase route to synthesizing a novel composite hierarchical hollow structure without adding catalysts, surfactants, or templates. The products, consisting of a WO2 hollow core sphere surrounded by a W18O49 nanorod shell (yielding a sea urchin-like structure), were generated as discrete structures via Ostwald ripening. To our knowledge, this type of composite hierarchical core/shell structure has not been reported previously. The morphological evolution and the detailed growth mechanism were carefully studied. We also demonstrate that the size of the hollow urchins is readily tunable by controlling the reactant concentrations.Interestingly, although bulk tungsten oxides are weakly paramagnetic or diamagnetic, the as-prepared products show unusual ferromagnetic behavior atroom temperature. The urchin structures also show a very high Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) surface area, suggesting that they may potentially be applied to chemical sensor or effective catalyst technologies.

  • TiO$_2$ and TiO$_2$-CdS powders which were expected to be highly activated photocatalysts were prepared using supercritical fluid method (SCF). The prepared photocatalyst TiO$_2$ powders were crystalline of anatase and ultrafine spherical powders with large specific surface area. When photodecompositoion reaction was done with TiO$_2$ powders prepared by SCF as a photocatalyst in DCA (Dichloroactic Acid) solution, a hazardous organic compound, the photocatlyst, properties of TiO$_2$ powders prepared by SCF were better than that of commercial TiO$_2$ powders.

  • SnS-$TiO_2$ nanocomposites are synthesized using simple, cheap, and less toxic $SnCl_2$ as the tin (II) precursor. The prepared nanoparticles are characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The XRD and TEM results indicate that the prepared product has SnS nanoparticles and a grain diameter of 30 nm. The DRS demonstrate that SnS-$TiO_2$ possesses the absorption profile across the entire visible light region. The generation of reactive oxygen species is detected through the oxidation reaction from 1,5-diphenyl carbazide (DPCI) to 1,5-diphenyl carbazone (DPCO). It is found that the photocurrent density and photocatalytic effect increase with the modified SnS. Excellent catalytic degradation of Texbrite BA-L (TBA) solution is observed using the SnS-$TiO_2$ composites under visible light irradiation. It is proposed that both the strong visible light absorption and the multiple exciton excitations contribute to the high visible light photocatalytic activity.

  • New porous $TiO_2$ nanostructures with shapes of pearl and rice were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of $TiO_2$-liposome nanocomposites in acid and base solutions, respectively, as identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images and large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and selected area electron diffraction proved them to be well-defined anatase crystals. Their UV-visible reflectance absorption spectra were observed to have low band gap energy (3.03 and 3.07 eV, respectively), exhibiting surface absorption band in the visible range from 400 to 600 nm. The degradation of methylene blue (MB) over the $TiO_2$ nanostructures was observed upon visible-light irradiation, which was found to be very efficient as compared with any other conventional visible-light responsive $TiO_2$ nanostructures.

  • Indoor air pollutants can cause severe health problems, specifically in terms of toxicological impacts on human. Every day, a complex mixture of many air pollutants is emitted from various sources and subject to atmospheric processes that can create varied classes of pollutants such as carboxylic acids, aldehydes, ketones, peroxyacetyl nitrate, and hydrocarbons. To adhere to indoor air quality standards, a number of techniques such as photocatalytic oxidation of various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been employed. Among these techniques, titania ($TiO_2$) based photocatalytic reactions have proven to be the best benchmark standard approach in the field of environmental applications. Over the last 45 years, $TiO_2$-based photocatalytic reactions have been explored for the degradation of various pollutants. This review discusses the indoor air quality profile, types of indoor pollutants, available indoor air cleaning approaches, and performance of $TiO_2$-based catalysts. Finally, we have presented the perspectives on the progress of $TiO_2$ induced photocatalysis for the purification of indoor air.

  • This study was carried out the simultaneous removal or organics and Cr(VI) in aqueous suspensions of phtocatalyst under circular type reactor and UV light illumination. In this experiment, comparison on the removal of Cr(VI) by photoreduction using UV light, photocatalyst adsorption using TiO2, ZnO, and FeCl3 as photocatalyst, and phtocatalysis using UV light with photocatalysts as well as the effect of experimental parameters such as phtocatalyst dosage, a kinds of organics and their concentration was examined. The major results of this study were as follows; 1. It was found that photocatalyst adsorption and phtocatalysis were applicable to the removal of Cr(VI), and Cr(VI) was more effectively eliminated by TiO2 than ZnO, and FeCl3. 2. phtocatalytic removal efficiency of Cr (VI) increased with increasing phtocatalyst dosage. However, over 1.0g/l of phtocatalyst dosage, the efficiency reached a plateau. 3. phtocatalytic removal of Cr(VI) was enhanced by addition of organics such as salicylic acid, mandelic acid, EDTA, and citric acid, and phtocatalytic oxidation of organics were also observed. 4. It was found that the simultaneous removal of organics and Cr(VI) using phtocatalysis was possible.

  • We prepared the nano-sized $TiO_2$ particles by the diffusion flame reactor and investigated the effects of several process variables on the generation and transport properties of $TiO_2$ particle. As the length from the tip of diffusion flame reactor increases, the size of $TiO_2$ particle increases by the coagulation between particles. The structure of $TiO_2$ particles prepared is almost found to be anatase. It was found that the $TiO_2$ particle size depends more largely on the change of reactor temperature than on the change of inlet $TiCl_4$ concentration. By the photo-degradation experiment of phenol and toluene with the prepared $TiO_2$ particles, we found that the photo-degradation efficiencies of phenol and toluene change, depending on the process variables such as size of $TiO_2$ photocatlysts, concentration of phenol or toluene. Degradation efficiencies of phenol and toluene was above 90% in our experiments in 60 minutes.

  • N-doped Titanium oxides were prepared by using urea as a source of nitrogen. The photoactivities of the doped $TiO_2$ were evaluated on the basis of degradation of humic acid in aqueous solutions with different light sources, ultraviolet lamp, fluorescent lamp and solar light. XRD analysis was conducted to identify the crystal structure of the synthesized photocatalysts. N-doped $TiO_2$ and $pure-TiO_2$ was anatase type. SEM results showed that spherical particles were formed, which are the characteristics of the anatase form. N doped $TiO_2$ showed higher $UV_{254}$ decrease ratio and DOC removal ratio compared to $pure-TiO_2$. The humic acid degradation reaction using the UV-A lamp and UV-C lamp was assigned to pseudo-first order reaction. For solar light, only $pure-TiO_2$ and $N-TiO_2$ exhibited the pseudo-first order reaction.
