This paper describes the out-of-plane order of a liquid crystalline(LC) methacrylate copolymer(3) comprised of a methacrylate(1) with a 4-styrylpyridine moiety as the photo-cyclodimerizable group and a benzoate moiety as the mesogenic group in the side chain, and another methacrylate(2) with a 4-(4-methoxyphenyl)benzoate moiety as the mesogenic group. The composition of 1 and 2 units in 3 was estimated to have a molar ratio of 54.2:45.8 by $^{1}H$ NMR spectroscopy. The X-ray diffraction study revealed that the copolymer forms a partial bilayer smectic structure. The copolymer gave rise to a high out-of-plane order parameter of about 0.74 in a wide LC temperature range of $110{\sim}160^{\circ}C$ after linearly polarized, UV light irradiation and subsequent annealing. Moreover, the external reflection IR analysis indicated that excess UV-light irradiation makes the out-of-plane LC structure of the copolymer appear in a higher and wider temperature range.
Photo-capacitor electrodes are attracting great attention because of their high capacitance and potential applications in electronic devices. Carbon capacitor, active carbon capacitor and its combination will be fabricated using simple sandwich capacitor electrode method as carbonaceous material on each type of capacitor electrodes with 20 ${\times}$ 15 mm cell size. Carbon/active carbon cell was fabricated using sol-gel process with 120oC dry temperature in l hour and using sintering process with 500oC in 2 hour. The effect of sintering temperature on carbon properties was also investigated with X-ray diffraction technique to get the best sintering temperature. The detail of fabrication process will be explained. Elemental composition in electrode material can be measured using quantitative spectroscopic as and a cyclic voltammetric technique was used to study the combined effects of electrode material and effect of annealing temperature and also time on the capacitance of thermally treated in capacitor electrode. In this work, characterization impedance technique is used to measurement of capacitance and giving complementary results. Active carbon as carbonaceous material has a better capacitance in charge/discharge process with mean thickness $32{\mu}m$ and with particle size $1{\mu}m$ to $4.5{\mu}m$ in 20 ${\times}$ 15 mm sample size of capacitor electrode.
For phase transition method, good record sensitivity, low heat radiation, fast crystallization and hi-resolution are essential. Also, a retention time is very important part for phase-transition. In our past papers, we chose composition of $Ge_1Se_1Te_2$ material to use a Se factor which has good optical sensitivity than conventional Sb. Sb/Ge-Se-Te thin films are fabricated and irradiated with UV light source to investigate a reversible phase change by Sb-doped condition. Because of Sb atoms, the Sb inserted sample showed better performance than conventional one. We should note that this novel one showed another possibility for phase-change random access memory.
Poly(vinyl butyral), PVB was photooxidized by UV/ozone irradiation and the effect of UV energy on the surface properties of the UV-irradiated PVB film were investigated by the measurement of reflectance, surface roughness, contact angles, elemental composition, and zeta potential. With increasing UV energy, reflectance decreased in the visible and ultraviolet regions particularly at the wavelength of 400nm. The irradiation produced nano-scale surface roughness including the maximum peak-to-valley roughness increased from 274nm for the unirradiated PVB to 370nm at the UV energy of $5.3J/cm^2$. The improved hydrophilicity was due to the higher $O_{1s}/C_{1s}$ resulting from the introduction of polar groups such as C=O bonds. The surface energy of the PVB film increased from $35.3mJ/m^2$ to $39.3mJ/m^2$ at the irradiation of $15.9J/cm^2$. While the zeta potentials decreased proportionally with increasing UV energy, the cationic dyeability of the PVB increased accordingly resulting from the improved affinity of the irradiated PVB surfaces containing the photochemically introduced anionic and dipolar dyeing sites.
Photosensitive carbon nanotube (CNT) pastes are explored to develop a CNT field emitter for field emission display (FED) application. We formulated a photosensitive paste including multi-walled CNTs (MWNTs) for screen printing. The photosensitive CNT paste was synthesized by mixing of MWNTs, inorganic fillers (nano metal), organic vehicle, monomers and photo initiator. The CNT paste films were patterned by using backside exposure technique. The CNTs were strongly fixed on a cathode by formation of carbon residue during firing process. For the CNT emitters, current-voltage(I-V) characteristics and images of field emission were evaluated. The emission properties of CNT emitters are dependent on the paste composition. A turn-on electric field for the CNT field emitters is measured to be 1 V/$\mu$m. Additionally, the effect of heat treatment parameter on field emission properties was discussed. The newly formulated photosensitive CNT paste can be potentially applicable to highly reliable CNT field emitters.
Toluene($C_6H_5CH_3$) gas sensors were fabricated using $PtO_x$ loaded with SWNTs by a new deposition method. The nanoparticle powders of SWNTs-$PtO_x$ composite were deposited on Si wafer substrates by a vacuum filtering deposition method. The fabricated sensors were tested against toluene gas which is a kind of the Volatile Organic Compounds. The composition ratio that exhibited the highest response to toluene gases was SWNTs : $PtO_x\;=\;99:1$ in wt% ratio at operating temperature of about $150^{\circ}C$. The response and recovery times of the sensors were as short as less than 1 min., respectively.
In this paper, fabrication of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu solder bumping having accurate composition and behavior of intermetallic compounds(IMCs) growth at interface between Sn-Ag-Cu bumps and Cu substrate were studied. The ternary alloy of the Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu solder was made by two binary(Sn-Cu, Sn-Ag) electroplating on Cu pad. For the manufacturing of the micro-bumps, photo-lithography and reflow process were carried out. After reflow process, the micro-bumps were aged at $150^{\circ}C$ during 1 hr to 500 hrs to observe behavior of IMCs growth at interface. As a different of Cu contents(0.5 or 2wt%) at Sn-Cu layer, behavior of IMCs was estimated. The interface were observed by FE-SEM and TEM for estimating of their each IMCs volume ratio and crystallographic-structure, respectively. From the results, it was found that the thickness of $Cu_3Sn$ layer formed at Sn-2.0Cu was thinner than the thickness of that layer be formed Sn-0.5Cu. After aging treatment $Cu_3Sn$ was formed at Sn-0.5Cu layer far thinner.
Biodegradable Poly(butylene succinate), PBS, was photooxidized by UV/ozone irradiation and the effect of UV energy on the surface properties of the UV-irradiated PBS film were investigated by the measurement of reflectance, surface roughness, contact angles, chemical composition, and zeta potential. With increasing UV energy, reflectance decreased in the visible and ultraviolet regions particularly at the wavelength of 380nm. The irradiation produced nano-scale surface roughness including the maximum peak-to-valley roughness increased from 106nm for the unirradiated sample to 221nm at the UV energy of $10.6J/cm^2$. The improved hydrophilicity was due to the higher $O_{1s}/C_{1s}$ resulting from the introduction of polar groups such as C-O and C=O bonds. The surface energy of the PBS increased from $42.1mJ/m^2$ for the unirradiated PBS to $56.8mJ/m^2$ at the irradiation of $21.2J/cm^2$. The zeta potentials of the UV-irradiated PBS also decreased proportionally with increasing UV energy. The cationic dyeability of the PBS increased accordingly resulting from the improved affinity of the irradiated PBS surfaces containing photochemically introduced anionic and dipolar dyeing sites.
Microalga, Spirulina platensis has been cultivated in a pilot scale photo-bioreactor to treat wastewater and to produce high protein feedstocks from swine waste containing medium. 0.31(1/day) of specific growth rate and 0.170 of bioenergeric yield were obtanined from batch cultivation in 30% waster containing medium, compared to 0.71(1/day) and 0.545 from clean culture. An optimal dilution concentration was decided as 20% of working volume, based upon the cell growth and biomass productivity. The removal rate of nitrates in the wastewater was decreased as the adding concentration of wastewater was increased while the decrease of total phosphates was reversed, showing 0.33(1/day) and 0.30(1/day) of rate constants for nitrate removal in 10% addition and for phosphate removal in 30% addition, respectively. The chemical composition and amino acid profile of the biomass were superior to those of commerically available health food product, Spirulina sp.
In this study, we prepared Fe-activated carbon fiber(ACF)/$TiO_2$ composites with titanium (VI) n-butoxide (TNB) as the titanium source for ACF pre-treated with iron compounds through the impregnation method. In terms of textural surface properties, the composites demonstrate a slight decrease in the BET surface area of the samples and an increase in the amount of iron compounds treated. The surface morphology of the Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites was characterized by means of SEM. The composites have a porous texture with homogenous compositions of Fe and titanium dioxide distributed on the sample surfaces. The phase formation and structural transition of the iron compounds and titanium dioxide were observed in X-ray diffraction patterns of the Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites. The chemical composition of the Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites, which was investigated with EDX shows strong peaks for the C, O, Fe and Ti elements. The photo degradation results confirm that the Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites show excellent removal activity for the COD in piggery waste due to photocatalysis of the supported $TiO_2$, radical reaction by Fe species, and the adsorptivity and absorptivity of ACF.
