Eighteen wether lambs averaging 32 kg were used to determine the effects of dietary silica, added as silicic acid, on mineral metabolism. Lambs were fed 1200 g daily of a coastal Bermuda grass based diet supplemented with either 0, .5 or 1.5% silicic acid. A 7-d total collection of urine and feces was conducted after lambs had adjusted to the dietary treatments for 19 days. Urinary excretion of silica was higher (p<.01) in lambs fed added silicic acid. Ruminal soluble concentrations of manganese tended to be lower (p<.10) and apparent absorption and retention of manganese were lower (p<.05) in lambs supplemented with silicic acid compared to control lambs. Apparent absorption and retention of calcium were slightly lower (p<.10) in silicic acid fed lambs. No differences in urinary between lambs fed .5 and those given 1.5% silicic acid. Phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper absorption and retention were not affected by treatment.
This study investigated the synergistic effect of single inoculation and co-inoculation of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) Burkholderia metallica JH-7 and Burkholderia contaminans JH-15. Phosphate-solubilizing abilities of these strains were assessed by measuring phosphorus content in culture media that were singly inoculated or co-inoculated with these strains for 7 days. B. metallica JH-7 was found to release the highest content of soluble phosphorus ($140.80{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ ) into the medium, followed by single inoculation of B. contaminans JH-15 ($135.95{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ ) and co-inoculation of two strains ($134.84{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ ). The highest pH reduction, organic acid production, and glucose consumption were observed in the medium inoculated with B. metallica JH-7 alone compared with that in the medium co-inoculated with both the strains. Results of a plant growth promotion bioassay showed 17.4% and 7.48% higher leaf and root growth, respectively, in romaine lettuce inoculated with B. metallica JH-7 alone than in romaine lettuce inoculated with a control strain. However, no significant difference was observed between single inoculation and co-inoculation of these strains with respect to phosphorus release and plant growth. Although the results of the present study did not show the synergistic effect of phosphate solubilization by the PSB strains examined, these results indicate that treatment with PSB exerts a beneficial effect on crop growth.

Algal communities are important to maintain the aquatic ecosystems function. Algae have short life cycles, they respond quickly to environmental change and their diversity and density can indicate and the quality of their habitat. The bloom forms before the rice seedings have emerged, it may present a physical barrier that prevents the seedlings from penetrating the floodwater. Wind may also move the algal bloom, pushing the young plants beneath the surface. Another harmful action develops when the water dries up and the algae form a layer at the bottom of the field. The layer envelops the seedlings, which are not yet deeply rooted, and drag them to the surface when the water is let in again. Soil utilization pattern can be the mail facter affecting soil physico-chemical properties, especially in soil phosphorus (P). Solid content of the algae culture solution increased with the increase in the nitrogen rather the phosphors concentration. Phosphoric acid was treated with conventional treatments (100-0%, before transplanting time-tillering stage), 50-50%, 0-100%, and un-treated. The herbicide was treated on the 7 DAT (day after transplanting). Green algae samples were collected 20 DAT. Total phosphoric acid was the highest at 0.06 in 50-50% treatment in 20 DAT. The amount of green algae was about twice (9.8 mg/20ml) that of un-treated. Total number of green algae was 54 species(Green algae 35 species, Euglena 9 species, Stone wheel 10 species). Among the phosphoric acid treatment methods, the number of occurrences of green algae were the highest with 39 species in 0-100%, followed by 50-50%, 28 species, conventional treatments, 22 species, non-treatment, 18 species, respectively. Rice Yield was not significantly different by phosphoric treatment time, but slightly higher than un-treated. The maximal algal biomass was observed about 2weeks or 1 month after transplanting; the subsequent decrease of the biomass was related to the consumption by grazers and to a deficient light under the rice canopy. Maximal algal growth was observed just before tillering. To estimate the suitable method of phosphorus application in puddled-soil drill seeding of rice, available phosphorus appearance of algal water bloom, and rice yield were investigated in paddy soil of rice-barley double cropping system.
On the seventh day of mounting male and feamale cocoons are distinguished. A part of those male and female pupae is irradiated for 40 min. with 1,000r-ray irradiation. Those eggs obtained from the irradiated pupae are divided into six groups of 5, 15, 45, 90, 720 and 2,400 minutes after laying. The cahanges of accid soluble phosphorus in the each group of eggs are as follows. 1. In the control group of the maximum quantity in acid soluble phosphorus was 1,456r/100mg D.P. in the 2,400 minutes group, while the minimum quantity was 1,233r/100mg D.P. in the 720 minutes group. 2. In the mated group of *irradiated female moths and control male moths, the quantity of acid soluble phoshorus was small as compared with the control group in the five minute group of 1,288r/100mg D.P. and in the 15 minutes group of 1,299r/100mg D.P. while the quantity increased to 1,484r/100mg D.P. in the 45 minutes group. The quantity began to decrease again to 1,400r/100mg D.P. in the 2,400 minutes group which was smaller than that of the control group. The quantity was slightly small in the silkworm eggs laid in the early stage when compared with that of mated group of *irradiated male moths and control female moths. Both groups showed the larger quantity in the 720 minutes group than that of the control group. The quantity of acid soluble phosphorus in the mated group of control female moths .and *irradiated male moths was larger in variation than in the mated group of control male moths and *irradiated female moths. 3. In the mated group of *irradiated male and female moths the largerst quantity was 1,760r/100ms D.P. in 2,400 minutes group and second was 1,736r/100mg D.P. in 90 minutes group, and third was 1,288r/100mg D. P., in 5 minutes group. Generally the quantity was small in silkworm eggs laid by the irradiated one in the early stage than the control group, but in the later period of egg the quantity began to increase more than that of control group.
Plant growth promoting traits like production of indoleacetic acid (IAA), ammonia, hydrogen cyanide (HCN), siderophore, and like the enzyme activities of catalase, ACC deaminase, cellulase, chitinase and protease were assayed in vitro for twenty one phosphorus solubilizing bacteria isolated from soil isolates. Except SPP-5 and SPP-15 strains, all the other isolated strains produced IAA in various amounts of 10 to $23{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$. All strains showed positive response for ammonia production and ACC deaminase activity implying that they are capable of growing in a N-free basal medium. Catalase activity was found to be superior in SPP-2, SPP-7, SPP-12 and SPP-17 compared to the other strains tested. HCN production was detected by 15 strains and among them SPP-9, SPP-15, SAph-11, and SAph-24 were found to be strong HCN producers. Except the isolates SPP-10, SPP-12, SPP-13 and SPP-14, all the other isolates produced more than 80% siderophore units. None of the strains showed cellulose and chitinase activity. SAph-8, SAPh-11, SAPh-24 and SPP-15 strains showed 35.84, 50.33, 56.64 and 34.78 U/ml protease activities, respectively. SPP-1, SPP-2, SPP-3, SPP-11, SPP-17, SPP-18, SAph-11 and SAph-24 strains showed positive response for all the tested plant growth promotion traits except cell wall degrading enzyme activities. According to the results, all the tested phosphorus solubilizing isolates could exhibit more than three or four plant growth promoting traits, which may promote plant growth directly or indirectly or synergistically. Therefore, these phosphorus solubilizing strains could be employed as bio-inoculants for agriculture soils.

To maximize a synergy effect in flame-retardancy of flame-retardant coatings, phosphorus and chlorine were introduced in polymer chains. Two-components PU flame-retardant modified polyesters (ABTTC-10C, -20C, -30C) were prepared by curing, at room temperature, of isocyanate (allophanate-trimer) and prepared modified polyesters which contain phosphorus and chlorine. To examine the film properties of the prepared flame-retardant coatings, film specimens were prepared with the prepared coatings. The film properties of ABTTC, ABTTC-10C and ABTTC-20C, which contain 0, 10 and 20wt%, 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,4-DCBA), respectively, were proved to be good, whereas the film properties of ABTTC-30C, which contains 30wt% 2,4-DCBA, were proved to be a little bit poor. Two kinds of flame retardancy tests, $45^{\circ}$Meckel burner method and LOI method, were performed. With the $45^{\circ}$Meckel burner method, three flame-retardant coatings except ABTTC showed less than 3.4 cm of char length, and showed less than 2 seconds of afterflaming and afterglow. From this result, the prepared flame-retardant coatings were proved to have the 1st grade flame retardancy. With the LOI method, the LOI values of the coatings containing more than 10wt% 2,4-DCBA were higher than 30wt%, which means that the coatings possess good flame-retardancy. From these results, it was found that synergistic effect in flame-retardancy was taken place by the introduced phosphorus and chlorine.

This study investigated the effect of organic matter on the precipitation of struvite and calcium phosphate for phosphorus recovery from synthetic dairy wastewater. Batch precipitation experiments were performed to precipitate phosphorus from solutions containing $PO_4{^{3-}}$ and $NH_4{^+}$ by the addition of $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$, separately, at varying pH, Mg/P and Ca/P molar ratios, and organic matter concentrations. Soluble total organic solids exhibited more inhibition to precipitation due to potential interaction with other dissolved ionic species involved in phosphorus precipitation. Xylan with low total acidity only exhibited significant inhibition at very high concentrations in synthetic wastewater (at up to 100 g/L). No significant inhibition was observed for Mg and Ca precipitation at relatively lower concentrations (at up to 1.2 g/L). MINTEQ simulations show that dissolved organic matter (DOM) as humic substances (HS) can cause significant inhibition even at relatively low concentrations of 0.165 g/L fulvic acid. However, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis suggested that xylan altered the crystal structure of both precipitates and had caused the formation of smaller sized struvite crystals with slightly rougher surfaces This could be due to xylan molecules adhering on the surface of the crystal potentially blocking active sites and limit further crystal growth. Smaller particle sizes will have negative practical impact because of poorer settleability.
This research was carried out to elucidate the impacts of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration to phosphorus release mechanism from soil into water in lakes. $PO_4-P$ contributed to the growth of the total phosphorus (T-P). $PO_4-P$ was steadily increasing because water was accumulating $PO_4-P$. T-P was closely related to turbidity, pH, and DO. We found that DO had decreased because DO was consumed in organic matter decomposition, and that the resulting anaerobic decomposition occurred whenever water had run out of DO. We also found that pH had decreased sharply by production of organic acid by the anaerobic decomposition and that T-P decreased because a decrease in pH removed turbidity by precipitation. T-P was dissolved without microbial decomposition. This mechanism was of great importance in lakes because phosphorus is released from soil into water.
Effects of nitrogen sources on free amino acids, and on photosynthsis-respiration equilibrium point of various positional leaf in soybean were investigated in relation to phosphorus sensitivity. The content of free amino acids was highest in ammonium and lowest in urea treated leaves. Glycine, serine, alanine and especially histidine were high in the ammonium treated leaves. Aspartic acid was high in the nitrate treated leaves. Photosynthesis respiration equilibrium point was higher in the sensitive cultivars, and higher with ammonium than with nitrate. The excess ammonium in plant appears to draw out an intermediate metabolite from carbon fixation pathway resulting in photosynthetic inhibition and activate pentoses phosphate pathway and photorespiration. Such phenomena were likely accentuated in phosphorus sensitive variety.
In this study, we have isolated a rice (Oryza sativa L.) glutamate decarboxylase (RicGAD) clone from a root cDNA library, using a partial Arabidopsis thaliana GAD gene as a probe. The rice root cDNA library was constructed with mRNA, which had been derived from the roots of rice seedlings subjected to phosphorus deprivation. Nucleotide sequence analysis indicated that the RicGAD clone was 1,712 bp long, and harbors a complete open reading frame of 505 amino acids. The 505 amino acid sequence deduced from this RicGAD clone exhibited 67.7% and 61.9% identity with OsGAD1 (AB056060) and OsGAD2 (AB056061) in the database, respectively. The 505 amino acid sequence also exhibited 62.9, 64.1, and 64.2% identity to Arabidopsis GAD (U9937), Nicotiana tabacum GAD (AF020425), and Petunia hybrida GAD (L16797), respectively. The RicGAD was found to possess a highly conserved tryptophan residue, but lacks the lysine cluster at the C-proximal position, as well as other stretches of positively charged residues. The GAD sequence was expressed heterologously using the high copy number plasmid, pVUCH. Our activation analysis revealed that the maximal activation of the RicGAD occurred in the presence of both $Ca^{2+}$ and calmodulin. The GAD-encoded 56~58 kDa protein was identified via Western blot analysis, using an anti-GAD monoclonal antibody. The results of our RT-PCR analyses revealed that RicGAD is expressed predominantly in rice roots obtained from rice seedlings grown under phosphorus deprivation conditions, and in non-germinated brown rice, which is known to have a limited phosphorus bioavailability. These results indicate that RicGAD is a $Ca^{2+}$/calmodulin-dependent enzyme, and that RicGAD is expressed primarily under phosphate deprivation conditions.
