Effects of Orthographic Knowledge and Phonological Awareness on Visual Word Decoding and Encoding in Children Aged 5-8 Years (5~8세 아동의 철자지식과 음운인식이 시각적 단어 해독과 부호화에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the relation among orthographic knowledge, phonological awareness, and visual word decoding and encoding abilities. Children aged 5 to 8 years took letter knowledge test, phoneme-grapheme correspondence test, orthographic representation test(regular word and irregular word representation), phonological awareness test(word, syllable and phoneme awareness), word decoding test(regular word and irregular word reading) and word encoding test(regular word and irregular word dictation). The performances of all tasks were significantly different among groups, and there were positive correlations among the tasks. In the word decoding and encoding tests, the variables with the most predictive power were the letter knowledge ability and the orthographic representation ability. It was found that orthographic knowledge more influenced visual word decoding and encoding skills than phonological awareness at these ages.

Meta-analysis of the effectiveness of speech processing analysis methods: Focus on phonological encoding, phonological short-term memory, articulation transcoding (메타분석을 통한 말 처리 분석방법의 효과 연구: 음운부호화, 음운단기기억, 조음전환을 중심으로)

  • This study aimed to establish evaluation methods for the speech processing stages of phonological encoding, phonological short-term memory, and articulation transcoding from a psycholinguistic perspective. A meta-analysis of 21 studies published between 2000 and 2024, involving 1,442 participants, was conducted. Participants were divided into six groups: general, dyslexia, speech sound disorder, language delay, apraxia+aphasia, and childhood apraxia of speech. The analysis revealed effect sizes of g=.46 for phonological encoding errors, g=.57 for phonological short-term memory errors, and g=.63 for articulation transition errors. These results suggest that substitution errors, order and repetition errors, and phoneme addition and voicing substitution errors are key indicators for assessing these abilities. This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of speech and language disorders by providing a methodological framework for evaluating speech processing stages and a detailed analysis of error characteristics. Future research should involve non-word repetition tasks across various speech and language disorder groups to further validate these methods, offering valuable data for the assessment and treatment of these disorders.

Lexical Encoding of L2 Suprasegmentals: Evidence from Korean Learners' Acquisition of Japanese Vowel Length Distinctions

  • Despite many studies on the production and perception of L2 phonemes, studies on how such phonemes are encoded lexically remain scarce. The aim of this study is to examine whether L2 learners have a perceptual problem with L2 suprasegmentals which are not present in their L1, or if they are able to perceive but not able to encode them in their lexicon. Specifically, Korean learners were tested to see if they could discriminate the vowel length differences in Japanese at the psychoacoustic level through a simple AX discrimination task. Then, a speeded lexical decision task with high phonetic variability was conducted to see whether they could use such contrasts lexically. The results showed that Korean learners of Japanese have no difficulties in discriminating Japanese vowel length contrast, but they are unable to encode such contrast in their phonological representation, even with long L2 exposure.

  • This study investigated Greene and Corwder(1984)'s modified PAS model, according to which, in a short-term memory recall task, the recency and suffix effects existing in auditory and visual conditions are mediated by the same mechanisms. It also investigated whether the auditory information and mouthed information are encoded by the same codes. Though the experimental manipulation of the phonological nature, the presence of differential recall effect of consonant-and vowel-varied stimuli in auditory and mouthing conditions which has been supposed to interact with the recency and suffix effects, was investigated. The result shows that differential recall effect between consonant and vowel exists only in the auditory condition, but not in the mouthing condition. Thus, this result supported Turner.

A Comparative Study of Spoken and Written Sentence Production in Adults with Fluent Aphasia (유창성 실어증 환자의 구어와 문어 문장산출 능력 비교)

  • Traditionally it has been assumed that written abilities are completely dependent on phonology. Therefore spoken and written language skills in aphasic patients have been known to exhibit similar types of impairment. However, a number of latest studies have reported the findings that support the orthographic autonomy hypothesis. The purpose of this study was to examine whether fluent aphasic patients have discrepancy between speaking and writing skills, thereby identifying whether the two skills are realized through independent processes. To this end, this study compared the K-FAST speaking and writing tasks of 30 aphasia patients. In addition, 16 aphasia patients, who were capable of producing sentences not only in speaking but also in writing, were compared in their performances at each phase of the sentence production process. As a result, the subjects exhibited different performances between speaking and writing, along with statistically significant differences between the two language skills at positional and phonological encoding phases of the sentence production process. Therefore, the study's results suggest that written language is more likely to be produced via independent routes without the mediation of the process of spoken language production, beginning from a certain phase of the sentence production process.

Prosodic Annotation in a Thai Text-to-speech System

  • This paper describes a preliminary work on prosody modeling aspect of a text-to-speech system for Thai. Specifically, the model is designed to predict symbolic markers from text (i.e., prosodic phrase boundaries, accent, and intonation boundaries), and then using these markers to generate pitch, intensity, and durational patterns for the synthesis module of the system. In this paper, a novel method for annotating the prosodic structure of Thai sentences based on dependency representation of syntax is presented. The goal of the annotation process is to predict from text the rhythm of the input sentence when spoken according to its intended meaning. The encoding of the prosodic structure is established by minimizing speech disrhythmy while maintaining the congruency with syntax. That is, each word in the sentence is assigned a prosodic feature called strength dynamic which is based on the dependency representation of syntax. The strength dynamics assigned are then used to obtain rhythmic groupings in terms of a phonological unit called foot. Finally, the foot structure is used to predict the durational pattern of the input sentence. The aforementioned process has been tested on a set of ambiguous sentences, which represents various structural ambiguities involving five types of compounds in Thai.
