  • The efficiency of a synchronous motor can be substantially improved by controlling armature voltage, field excitation, and load angle on optimum values which yield minimum input power at any specified torque and speed. This improvement is particularly noticeable in the case of light loads. In addition, the control of armature input voltage improves the power factor at which the motor operates. Employed in the analysis is a new equivalent circuit model of the motor which incorporates the frequency dependent nature of the motor parameters and the effects of iron loss. The stability of synchronous motor operation is studied by applying the Nyquist stability criterion to the linearized equations which describe the behavior of the motor as the motor loads perturb about a steady-state operating point. This investigation reveals that, in some cases, the stable region of the motor is delineated from the results of a computer simulation. With a view to reducing harmonic loss and improving torque pulsation from harmonic components, a very poweful pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) method using an 16-bit microcomputer has been developed. This method has the advantages of simplicity of control algorithms and requires small memory space for storing thyristor trigger angles for a three-phase PAM inverter. The method can be used for smooth control of both modulation depth and frequency over a wide range.

  • A joint blind parameter estimation algorithm based on minimum channel stability function aimed at the non-cooperative high-order modulated paired carrier multiple access (PCMA) signals is proposed. The method, which uses hierarchical search to estimate time delay, amplitude and frequency offset and the estimation of phase offset, including finite ambiguity, is presented simultaneously based on the derivation of the channel stability function. In this work, the structure of hierarchical iterative processing is used to enhance the performance of the algorithm, and the improved algorithm is used to reduce complexity. Compared with existing data-aided algorithms, this algorithm does not require a priori information. Therefore, it has significant advantage in solving the problem of blind parameter estimation of non-cooperative high-order modulated PCMA signals. Simulation results show the performance of the proposed algorithm is similar to the modified Cramer-Rao bound (MCRB) when the signal-to-noise ratio is larger than 16 dB. The simulation results also verify the practicality of the proposed algorithm.

  • This paper presents methods for the compensation of sinusoidal disturbances with unknown amplitude, phase, and time-varying frequency in nonlinear systems. In the previous disturbance accommodation methods, the sinusoidal disturbance with unknown time-invariant frequency was considered. In the proposed method, the disturbance with unknown time-varying frequency is compensated. As for the control structure, two control inputs are designed separately in such a way that one of them is designed for the nonlinear system control without considering the disturbance, and the other one uses the disturbance estimate obtained from the disturbance accommodating observer. The stability analysis is done considering the disturbance estimation error and the numerical simulation demonstrates the proposed approach.

  • The PAL (Pohang Accelerator Laboratory) is persuading to construct a SASE-XFEL facility (PAL XFEL) that supplies coherent X-rays. The bright and stable electron beam is essential for the PAL XEL. The electron beams has to have an emittance of 1.0 mm-mrad, a peak current of 3 kA, and a low energy spread of 1.0 MeV. In order to provide reasonably stable SASE output, the RF stability of 0.02% rms is required for both RF phase and amplitude. This is a technologically challenging issue for PAL XFEL. An inverter technology is to be applied to charge the PFN of a new modulator. Therefore, a new inverter system should provide very stable charging performances. This paper presents the development of an ultra stable klystron-modulator with an inverter power supply.

  • The measurement of the amplitude and phase of electric fields on high voltage transmission lines is important for several reasons including a) Metering and determination of power flow, b) protective relaying. and c) fault sensing. The work reported here is directed toward a major improvement to optically based, electric-field sensors. This is a signal processing based technique for overcoming the instabilities of conventional, optically-based, electric-field sensors to changes in optical power or temperature.

  • A Second Harmonic Generation Frequency Resolved Optical Gating(SHG FROG) system was developed. Its performance test shows that it is capable of accurately measuring the temporal evolution of the electric field, both amplitude and phase, of femtosecond light pulses. For the retrieval of the temporal evolution of light pulses from their spectrograms obtained by using the FROG system, Principal Components Generalized Projection(PCGP) algorithm is used and in addition we used additional constraints of second-harmonic spectrum, marginals in frequency and time-delay of the spectrogram. Such modification of the software brings about significant improvement in speed and stability of the pulse retrieval process.

  • Grid-connected inverters (GCIs) with an LCL output filter have the ability of attenuating high-frequency (HF) switching ripples. However, by using only grid-current control, the system is prone to resonances if it is not properly damped, and the current distortion is amplified significantly under highly distorted grid conditions. This paper proposes a synchronous reference frame equivalent proportional-integral (SRF-EPI) controller in the αβ stationary frame using the parallel virtual resistance-based active damping (PVR-AD) strategy for grid-interfaced distributed generation (DG) systems to suppress LCL resonance. Although both a proportional-resonant (PR) controller in the αβ stationary frame and a PI controller in the dq synchronous frame achieve zero steady-state error, the amplitude- and phase-frequency characteristics differ greatly from each other except for the reference tracking at the fundamental frequency. Therefore, an accurate SRF-EPI controller in the αβ stationary frame is established to achieve precise tracking accuracy. Moreover, the robustness, the harmonic rejection capability, and the influence of the control delay are investigated by the Nyquist stability criterion when the PVR-based AD method is adopted. Furthermore, grid voltage feed-forward and multiple PR controllers are integrated into the current loop to mitigate the current distortion introduced by the grid background distortion. In addition, the parameters design guidelines are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. Finally, simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the feasibility of the proposed control approach.

  • Recent studies have shown that Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is modulated by Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) during the boreal winter; MJO becomes more active and predictable during the easterly phase of QBO (EQBO) than the westerly phase (WQBO). Despite growing evidences, climate models fail to capture the QBO-MJO connection. One of the possible reasons is a weak static stability change in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) by neglecting QBO-induced ozone change in the model. Here, we investigate the possible impact of the ozone-radiative feedback in the tropical UTLS on the QBO-MJO connection by integrating the Global Seasonal Forecasting System 5 (GloSea5) model. A set of experiments is conducted by prescribing either the climatological ozone or the observed ozone at a given year for the EQBO-MJO event in January 2006. The realistic ozone improves the temperature simulation in the UTLS. However, its impacts on the MJO are not evident. The MJO phase and amplitude do not change much when the ozone is prescribed with observation. While it may suggest that the ozone-radiative feedback plays a rather minor role in the QBO-MJO connection, it could also result from model biases in UTLS temperature and not-well organized MJO in the model.

  • This paper relates with the improved CMA blind adaptive equalization algorithm which uses the constellation matching method that improve the inverse modelling efficiency of a communication channel compared to the present CMA blind adaptive equalizer. The amplitude distortion can be compensated in the present CMA blind adaptive equalizer which is used for the reduction of intersymbol interference by distortion that generate such as a band limited wireless mobile channel, but in the improved adaptive alogorithm operates with the minimize the amplitude phase distortion in the output of equalizer by applying the cost function that is composition of additional signal constellation matching error terms. In order to evaluation of the inverse modeling efficiency of improved algorithm, the residual intersymbol interference and recovered signal constellation were compared by computer simulation. As a result of comparion of computer simulation, the improved algorithm has a good stability in the residual intersymbol interference in the steady state, but it has a slow convergence rate in the adaptation state in initial state.
