  • The morphological and anatomical features of petioles in genus Populus were as follows, 1. All of 8 species had one sort of these trichoma; wooly, tomentose, gravellate, cravellate. 2. The colors of petioles were different with the species; Populus alba was green white, P. glandulosa was white green, and P. maximowiezii P. koreana were red on the surface but the back of petioles were light green. Most of petioles of P. euramericana and P. deltoides were light green but the rest on the same trees were two different colors as P. nigra var. italica and P. simonii were light green or yellow green. 3. P. koreana had the largest diameter of petiole among the 8 species investigated, and P. simonii was the smallest. 4. The lengths of petioles were highly significant among species except 3 combinations. 5. The number of vascular was different with the species and with section levels of petiole; At the base level, the vascular number of 8 species were highly significant among species and the average number of vascular of 8 species were 6.61. At the middle level, the average number of vascular were 5.26 in 8 species, and P. nigra var. italica were highly significant against the rest 7 species and two combinations showed at 5 percent significance. 6. At the terminal level, since the 95.5 per cent of the samples contained 3~4 vasculars and only 4.5 per cent of the samples in each section contained 5 vasculars, there, was no significance among the species. 6. Mostly the largest vascular of petioles was appeared in under part of the any sections in 8 species investigated.

  • The study aimed to determine effects of light emitting diode (LED) and the ultraviolet radiation (UVA) light of plant factory on plant growth and ascorbic acid content of spinach (Spinacia oleracea cv. Shusiro). Plants were grown in a NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) system for 28 days after transplanting with fluorescent light (FL, control), LEDs and UVA (Blue+UVA (BUV), Red and Blue (R:B(2:1)) + UVA (RBUV), Red+UVA (RUV), White LED (W), Red and Blue (R:B(2:1)), Blue (B), Red (R)) under the same light intensity ($130{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$) and photoperiod (16/8h = day/night). All the light sources containing the R (R, RB, RUV, and RBUV) showed leaf epinasty symptom at 21 days after transplanting (DAT). Under the RUV treatment, the lengths of leaf and leaf petiole were significantly reduced and the leaf width was increased, lowering the leaf shape index, compared to the R treatment. Under the BUV, however, the lengths of leaf and leaf petiole were increased significantly, and the leaf number was increased compared to B. Under the RBUV treatment, the leaf length was significantly shorter than other treatments, while no significant difference between the RBUV and RB for the fresh and dry weights and leaf area. Dry weights at 28 days after transplanting were significantly higher in the R, RUV and BUV treatments than those in the W and FL. The leaf area was significantly higher under the BUV treatment. The ascorbic acid content of the 28 day-old spinach under the B was significantly higher, followed by the BUV, and significantly lower in FL and R. All the integrated data suggest that the BUV light seems to be the most suitable for growth and quality of hydroponically grown spinach in a plant factory.

  • To provide useful information for developing new high yielding soybean varieties and for improving cultural practices, an investigation was made on variation of dry matter production and on relationship among several agronomic characters of soybean plants grown under different planting times and densities as well as under different fertilizer levels, using Kwang-kyo, Dong puk-tae, and Suke # 51 as determinate types and Shelby, SRF-300 and Harosoy as indeterminate types at the Crop Experiment Station during the period of 1972 and 1973. The results obtained were summarized as follow: 1. The dry weight, CGR and LAI at the initial flowering stage were high in the high plant population irrespective of varieties, planting times, and fertilizer levels. However, those characters of the indeterminate type were lower than those of the determinate types. The same characters of the indererminate type at the terminal leaf stage were either same or higher than those of the determinate types. 2. The dry weight of the determinate type at the initial flowering stage was similar to the indeterminate, type, when planting times were May 21 or June 15. The dry weights of both types of varieties were low when planted on July 10. When fertilizer levels were increased, the CGR, dry weight and LAI at the initial flowering stages were also increased. 3. Even though significant differences of LAI were obtained among the varieties within the same plant type, the indeterminate type was in general lower than that of the determinate type regardless of planting time and densities, or fertilizer levels, while the yield of the indeterminate type was comparable to the yield of the determinate type. 4. The high degree of leaf- and petiole-fall at the greenbean stage was highly associated with early planting and high levels of fertilizers. However, less amount of leaf- or petiole-fall was found when planted on July 10 or under low plant population. 5. The percent of stem weight was high under higher plant population, while the percent of leaf weight was high under lower plant population. When planting time was late, the percent of stem and petiole weight were reduced, while the leaf weight was increased. 6. The percent of pod weight of the determinate type at the terminal leaf stage was about 2% when planted on May 21, about 8% when planted on June 15, and about 9% when planted on July 10. The percent of pod weight of the indeterminate type at the terminal leaf stage were about 6 % when planted on May 21, 14% when planted on June 15 and 21% when planted on July 10. 7. Kwang kyo showed less degree of leaf-fall even when lodged due to high levels of fertilizer applied, while SRF-300 showed great damage due to lodging. 8. High yields were obtained when planted on May 21, but there were little yield differences between yields from May 21 and June 15 plantings. The reduction of yield due to late planting of July 10 was less apparent in the determinate type of varieties, while it was high in the indeterminate type. 9. The optimum plant population per are for high yield was 1, 250 to 2, 500 plants when planted on May 21, 2, 500 plants when planted on June 15, and 3, 333 plants when planted on July 10. 10. High correlation coefficients were obtained between dry matter weight and LAI at the terminal leaf stages, and between the dry matter weight and yield at the greenbean stages. The optimum dry weight for high yield in the determinate type was expected to be 25 kg. per are at the initial flowering stage and 50 kg. per are at the terminal leaf stage. In the indeterminate type the LAI and dry weight at the greenbean stage were 4 to 5 and 80 kg. per are, respectively. 11. Under the high plant population plant height was increased, while the stem diameter and the number of nodes and branches were reduced. Consequently, the percent of mainstem to main stem plus branches were increased, and the length of internode was also elongated. The ratios of stem weight, number of nodes and pods, and yield of main stem were increased when high plant population was associated with the early planting. The percent of main stem to branches for the indeterminate type was higher than that of the determinate type. 12. Under the high plant densities and late planting, the percent of the pod number and yields of main stem were increased, indicating that varieties with no or less branches were better adaptable under such conditions. 13. High degree of simple correlation coefficients was obtained between the LAI at the initial flowering stage and terminal leaf stage, and the total node number, dry matter and dry stem weight of both determinate and indeterminate types. Even though no significant correlation was found between the LAI at the initial flowering stage of the determinate type and the stem length and pod number per are, highly significant correlation coefficients were obtained between such characters in the indeterminate type of varieties. 14. The dry matter was positively correlated with the LAI, CGR, stem length, and pod number, node number and dry stem weight per are, while no significant correlation was found between the dry matter and stem diameter. 15. The correlation coefficients between lodging index and the LAI, dry weight, stem length and dry stem weight were highly significant. Negative correlation was obtained for the indeterminate type between the stem diameter and lodging index. The correlation coefficient between the stem diameter and lodging index was non-significant for the determinate type, while positive correlation was obtained between the yield and lodging index in the determinate type. The lodging index was also positively correlated with average length of internode of main stem. 16. The 100 seed weight appeared to be lowered under the high plant population and no fertilizer condition, and when planted late. Apparent differences of 100 seed weight were found between main stem and branches, being higher for the main stem than for the branches. 17. No variation of protein content was found due to different cultural practices. However, the oil content was apparently reduced when planted late.

  • This study was carried out to control the decrease of yield and the deterioration of quality of Angelica gigas roots by bolting. This phenomenon resulted from lignificartion and dwarfishness of roots because of bolting formed for inflorescence and fruition. Seedlings were grown for 60,90 and 120 days in nursery of the green house, and transplanted in main field to compare with traditional seedling that grew for 1 year. Growth of the petiole length compare with length and leaf width of aerial parts in nursery showed a remarkably progress, and root characters as root length, root diameter and root weight grew more vigorously in the order of nursery periods. Bolting was not entirely formed in plots transplanted the seedlings which grown for short-time; 60, 90 and 120days, but showed the high bolting rate, 64.3%,in traditional seedling plots. Yield was higher in plots that transplanted short-time growing seedlings than that transplanted traditional seedlings, and among 3 kinds of nursery periods yields were high in the order of nursery periods. For the increase of yield and decrease of bolting rate, it was needed to transplant small seedlings of 3-4g/plant which grew in nursery for 90-120 days.

  • The Polygonum amphibium complex (Poygonaceae) is a highly polymorphic taxon that can grow in aquatic environments as well as in moist terrestrial habitats. Aquatic and terrestrial plants of the P. amphibium complex vary significantly in morphology and exhibit very complicated patterns of morphological variation, resulting in the description of numerous infra-specific taxa. Principal components analysis of 107 individuals of the P. amphibium complex from Asia and North America using 11 morphological characters showed that the aquatic plants can be discerned from the terrestrial plants by leaf size, shape, and petiole length. In contrast, both aquatic and terrestrial plants collected from the same population or locality shared identical sequences in the matK, psbA-trnH IGS, rbcL-accD IGS and trnL-trnF regions of the chloroplast DNA (cpDNA), suggesting that aquatic and terrestrial forms of the P. amphibium complex are not genetically diverged; morphological differences between the two forms are probably due to the differences in environmental conditions of the habitats. In addition, results from the morphological analysis and the maximum parsimony analysis of the cpDNA data set revealed that the plants from Asia including Korea, Japan, China, Mongolia and Russia Far East are diverged from those in North America and Europe, suggesting that the Asian populations should be recognized as a distinct variety, P. amphibium var. amurense Korsh.

  • This study was conducted to determine the number of days required to break a plant's dormancy and promote subsequent crop growth in new varieties of Gomchwi through the 4℃ treatment. Three new varieties of Gomchwi namely, 'Sammany', 'Gommany', and 'Damogy' were observed in this study. The rate of leaf emergence of 'Sammany' after 15-day of 4℃ treatment was 100%, while 'Gommany', and 'Damogy' took 20-days and 10-days, respectively to reach to 97.9% rate of leaf emergence. After 10-days of 4℃ treatment, 'Damogy' grew faster than the other varieties. and Harvest time for 'Damogy' was on January 18th, after 5-days of 4℃ treatment and yield was observed to be the highest at 15-days of 4℃ treatment. 'Sammany' was next with a minimum of 10-days of 4℃ treatment, although 15-days is more preferred for better harvest. 'Gommany' on the other hand, did not grow enough for harvest by January 18th, and its harvest time was delayed to January 31st. It needed a minimum of 15-days and preferentially 20-days of 4℃ treatment to grow normally and be ready for harvest. The plant height, leaf length and leaf petiole length appeared to grow better by extending duration of the 4℃ treatment. The number of leaves of 'Sammany' and 'Gommany' varieties was three leaves for the 5-days treatment which may be due to the incomplete breaking of dormancy. Regarding the yield per plant, 'Sammany' yielded 112.3 grams (g) in 15-days treatment, and 'Gommany' yielded 106.5 g in 25-days treatment. In the case of 'Damogy', it yielded 123.5 g and 183 g in the 10-days and 25-days treatment respectively. It is concluded that 'Damogy', 'Sammany' and 'Gommany requires 10, 15, and 20 days of 4℃ treatment to break the plant's dormancy and promote better plant growth.

  • Centella asiatica is one of the local herbs that is claimed to possess various physiological effects. C. asiatica also accumulates large amounts of pentacyclic triterpenoid saponins known as centelloids. These terpenoids usually include asiatic acid, asiaticoside, madecassoside, and madecassic acids. In the present study, to understand the changes of triterpene glycoside levels in the different shoot tissues of C. asiatica during seasonal cultivation, we investigated the High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis via different extraction methods, such as water, 20% ethanol and methanol extracts. Significant increases were observed in the levels of madecassoside and asiaticoside in the leaf extracts by methanol compare with extracts using water or 20% ethanol. Additionally, we also analyzed the various antioxidant activity in the different shoot tissues of C. asiatica using different extracts, such as leaves, petioles and both materials. Among these petiole extracts showed high 2,2-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTs) scavenging activity in all extracts, whereas 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity exhibited high activity levels in the leaf part using methanol and ethanol extracts. Levels of total phenolics and flavonoid also showed the highest levels in the leaf tissues using all extracts such as methanol, ethanol and water. Our results indicated that the increased levels of triterpene glycoside and antioxidant activity in the leaf parts of the C. asiatica were indicating that useful metabolites were mainly maintained through seasonal cultivation such as madecassoside, asiaticoside.

  • White clover (Trifolium repens L) gives rise to either weak persistence or overdominance in the pastures. To get information on grazing method to surmount the problem, the experiment was done to measure the effect of infrequent, frequent and their alternations on harvest yield and morphological characteristics of the clover. Individual plants of Regal, Louisiana S-l, Grasslands Huia, and Aberystwyth S184 were grown in 22cm plastic pot containing a 2: 1: 1 soil: sand: Peat moss mixture for 27 days after transplanting 50-day seedlings raised on 3cm pots, and then their all fully expanded leaves are trimmed. Defoliation treatments were forced every 1 (CC, frequent), 4 week(RR,infrequent) or their alternations(CR, RC) after 8 weeks from the trimming. To analyze the treatment effects, plants were sampled on 4, 8, 12, and 16 weeks after the trimming. Harvest yield of infrequent defoliation (RR) was higher than that of frequent defoliation (CC). Leaf area and no. of leaves per plant, petiole length and stolon length per plant, moreover, showed the similar result to the yield but stolon length and leaf area per g were reverse. The alternation of infre-quent and then frequent defoliation (RC) had greater yield than that of their reverse (CR) although both alternations showed intermediate ones compared to CC and RR. Morphological characteristics, furthermore, related to the clover leaf were immediately changed by alternations of defoliation inter-val(RC and CR) while those done to the stolon were lasted longer thereafter(RC and CR). Harvest yields in RC and CR were positively correlated to leaf area and no. of leaves or stolon length per plant but negatively done to leaf area and stolon length per g. It is concluded that weak persistence or overdominance of white clover in pasture can be controlled by alternation of infrequent and then frequent defoliation or reverse.

  • 1) The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of culture filtrates of Fusarium oxysporum f. vasinfectum which is known to produce fusaric acid (wilt toxin) on the germination of sesame seeds and the growth of sesame seedlings. 2) Culture filtrates of Fusarium oxysporum 1. vasinfectum used in this study strongly or weakly inhibited the germination and bring about necrosis accompanying black discoloration of sesame seeds. 3) Varietal difference of sesame in the germination response on the culture filtrates of Fnsarium oxysporum f. vasinfectum is not shown in this study. 4) This study reveals that differential five strains of Fnsarium oxysoprum f. vasinfectum used in this study differ greatly in the toxicity of culture filtrates inhibiting the germination of sesame seeds. 5) In the seedling bed added with culture filtrates of Fnsarium oxysporum f. vasinfectum, the growth of shoot as well as root system of sesame seedlings are notably inhibited and necrotic black discoloration appear on both shoot and root system. But in the seedling beds added with weaker concentration of culture filtrates $/(10\%)$ the growth of shoot is slightly promoted. 6) In culture of sesame seedlings with Knop's solution containing 1 to 3 per cent culture filtrates, the growth of shoot as well as root system are slightly retarded" and till the time of development of the third leaves the whole stem and leaf petiole tissue are weakened so that they become thread like accompanying brown discoloration, interveinal light brown area appear in the second leaves, and the third leaves curl from both sides towards the middle with necrotic brown discoloration, especially symptoms of injury on the third leaves are nearly similar that of the leaves of wilted sesame in the field. 7) A pararell relationship is not found between toxicity of culture filtrates and pathogenicity of five differential strains of Fnsarium oxysporum f. vasinfectum used in this study.

  • Changes in weight, volume and density of petiole tissue of Chinese cabbage during salting and blanching were investigated. Rapid changes in mass and volume occurred within 4 hours during salting in 5% salt solution and the changes were nearly completed after 8h. After salting, the reduction of mass and volume ranged between $22{\sim}27%\;and\;22{\sim}35%$, respectively. Average density of the sample was found to be 0.88g/ml, and increased to 1.020g/ml after salting. Air content of the sample ranged from 0.093 to 0.120ml/ml cabbage, and about 70% of the initial content was expelled from the tissue by salting. The changes of physical properties of the cabbage during steam blanching were similar to those during salting, but their relative values were smaller. A linearization model for physical changes during salting and blanching was proposed.
