  • In order to know the quality changes of the fat and oil foods packed in plastics film by the sunlight, we examined the sunlight transmitting rate by the kind of films and measured the acid value and peroxide value according to it. The results obtained were as follows : 1. The sunlight transmitting rate of various films was explained especial permeability under the wavelength of less than 300nm, but it marked a regular form under that of more than 30nm. 2. The vacuum evaporation film with aluminum on the polyester shuts off most of the sunlight, therefore, it has the best effect that keeps the fats and oils off rancidity. 3. The sunlight transmitting rate of the white color printing film drops about 80% as compared with not printing. 4. The preventive power against the rancidity of fats and oils is PET/Al, PET, PE, nylon and OPP film in that order. The changes of peroxide value and acid value were approximately the same as that of the sunlight transmitting rate.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the deformation of packaging materials used for ready-to-eat (RTE) foods after the retort process and microwave heating. From the multilayer films consisting of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyamide (PA), and cast polypropylene (CPP) in a stand-up pouch form used for RTE foods, some deformation of the CPP layer, which was in direct contact with the food, was observed after the retort process and microwave heating. The damage was more severely caused by microwave heating than by the retort process. This may be attributed to diverse factors including the non-uniform heating in a microwave oven, the sorption of oil into the packaging film, and the different characteristics of food components such as viscosity, salt and water content. The development of heat-resistant packaging materials and systems suitable for microwave heating of RTE foods is required for the safety of consumers.

  • Chitosan has been widely applied to the products in various industries such as textile fabrics, apparels, foods, medical area, etc. Cochineal has long been employed as one of natural dyestuffs in the textile industry. The effect of chitosan pre-treatment on the low-stress physical and mechanical properties of cochineal-dyed fabrics including cotton, silk, nylon and polyester fabrics was investigated in this study. The chitosan treatment and mordanting of the fabrics changed the bending, shear, compression, and surface properties of the fabrics. In cotton fabric specimens, while the increase of B(bending rigidity) of cotton is relatively high, the increase of G(shear rigidity) of cotton is relatively low. In nylon and PET fabric specimens, while the increase tendency of B is relatively low, that of G is high compared to the corresponding cotton fabrics.

  • Numbers of companion animals and people rearing them are increasing in developed countries. As a result, businesses related to companion animals are becoming more advanced and specialized. Dogs have been cohabiting with humans as companions (pets) for thousands of years and, as a result, eat carbohydrate-rich foods similar to humans and maintain lives similar to their owners. Tight bonds between dogs and their owners are formed by sharing similar lifestyles, including a dwelling and food. Owners are responsible for their pets and treat them with emotional stability. Pets depend on their owners, although the food situation can cause stress. Since pet dogs are carnivorous in nature, providing pet dogs with a nutritionally balanced diet and functional materials is important for a healthy gut microbiome. Recently, the gut microbiota has become a research focus because it is associated with protection from harmful pathogens and immune regulation while maintaining physiological homeostasis. An abnormal gut microbiota is related to pathogenic processes and various gut, metabolic, mental, and neurological diseases. Additionally, pet dogs at risk of disease affect the health of their owners. Therefore, this review discusses the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota of dogs and the relationships between the gut microbiota and diseases.

  • In the year of 1998 the heads of dog raised in Korea were 1,846,411 and the number of the households raising dogs is 819,112 which means that the heads of pet dog and edible dos were 819,112 and 1,027,299, respectively, because each house raised about one pet dog and one edible dog breeder raised hundreds of dog. in 1998 the number of exported dogs came to 28 heads and that of imported dogs was 296 heads. But edible dog that was slaughtered or processed has not been reported to be exported or imported. It is known that at the Shenyang Xingshan Food Ltd in Shenyang, Chinese, 300,000 heads of dogs were rais-ed slaughtered and processed of dog meat per year, and 20% of them were exported. In Korea the cook of dog meat is a special food culture with a long history. During the Chosun dynasty dog meat had been eaten to be cooked diversely such as Gaejangkuk(a soup) Suyuk(a boiled meat) Sundae(a sausage) Kui(a roasted meat) Gaezim(a steamed meat) Nurumi(a meat roasted or fried to which lot of spice paste are added) Gaesoju(an extract) Musulju(a wine) Musuldang(a sweet cane) Now it is cooked as Bosintang(a soup) Suyuk (a boiled meat) Jeongol (boiled meat mixed with spices vegetables and water on the pot) Duruchigi(boiled meat added spice vegatasble and slightly roasted) Muchim(boiled meat added by spice and mixed) Gaesoju(an extract) with the number of recipes lessened compared with those of the old times. The reason is due to the intervention and criticism from foreign countries. But foreigner's blame for the dog meat is absurd and excessive action because Korea raises exceptional dogs which are edible.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the conventional culture method, enzyme immune method and the PCR method using species-specific primer in the analysis on the Salmonella spp. found in domestically distributed pet foods. For the study, Salmonella spp. were detected from 175 samples. From the conventional culture method and the PCR method, two samples (jerky and corn gluten) were determined as positive. Also, from the enzyme immune method, one sample (corn gluten) was test-positive. The study revealed that application of the PCR method with species-specific primer allows better distinguishment between the species of the strain collected from the samples than the conventional culture method and/or the enzyme immune method.

  • This study was conducted to gather the basic data on making good use of a kind of groundsel (Ligularia fischeri). We have made methanol extracts from Ligularia fischeri and have also determined the effects of extracting temperature and time on the physiological activities of methanol extracts from Ligularia fischeri. Total phenolic compound and flavonoid contents in the methanol extracts from Ligularia fischeri at the extracting concentration of $1,000mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ were $75.8-297.7mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and $45.6-173.6mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Total phenolic compound and flavonoid contents, and DPPH radical scavenging activities were most increased when Ligularia fischeri was extracted with methanol at $95^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours, however, nitrite radical scavenging activities were extremely increased at $75^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours by 97.4%. At $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and $400mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ methanol extracting concentration, the hyperplasia of lung cancer cells (Calu-6) and stomach cancer cells (SNU601) were effectively inhibited over 90%. Consequently, it was assumed that Ligularia fischeri was a functional vegetable with a higher physiological activities. Making the processed foods, it had better make the extracts from Ligularia fischeri with methanol at $95^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours.

  • Digestibility of pet food can affect the health of dog, especially of aged animals. To maintain the health of dogs in an overall good status it is necessary to provide nutritionally balanced food. For example, the digestibility of dogs was known to be decreased along aging. In addition, losing teethes is an often event in aged dogs that could induce a problem to eat a large size dry pet food. Nonetheless, few detailed information is available on the most suited feeding for aged dogs. As part of the nutritional study of food for aged dogs, in this study, we tested whether food type impacts on digestibility on adult versus senior dogs. The methodology to measure the digestibility of nutrients was chosen the index method using chromium oxide. Dogs were fed the same commercial dry or wet diets, which were supplemented with 0.5% chromium oxide. The wet food was prepared by adding twice volume of water in the dry food prior to incubated overnight (14-16 hours) at room temperature. After five days, their feces were collected up to a total weight of > 200 g which was the amount to analyze undigested nutrients in feces as 3 repeats. In the apparent total tract digestibility analysis of the experimental breed, no difference in the digestibility of crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, ash, and energy was observed regarding the moisture content of the food. Noteworthy, the digestibility of nitrogen free extract was significantly increased in senior dogs fed dry dog food compared with adult dogs fed the same diet, whereas no difference was observed between senior and adult dogs fed wet food. The small breed dogs showed similar results to the experimental breed dogs. However, the digestibility of crude fat was additionally affected by age and food type unlike the experimental breed dogs. This finding suggests that the food moisture content affects the digestibility of nutrients in dogs with aging. Hence, it may be helpful to determine the nutrient contents in foods for senior dogs depending on the food type.
