  • In this research on-line model for the prediction of the effective strain distribution in strip on finishing mill process is presented. To describe the effective strain distribution in strip, three guide points and a distribution fitting variable are used. On-line models to get these points and fitting variable non-dimensionalization method and least square method were used with FEM simulation results. The model is developed using strip only FEM simulation as reference sets and compared with roll coupled FEM simulation results as perturbed sets. The on-line model to describe effective strain distribution shows good agreement with coupled FEM analysis results.

  • In this paper, we present a non-fragile guaranteed cost control design method for uncertain nonlinear systems with time varying delays in state and control input, even though the controller gain is perturbed. The uncertain nonlinear term in the systems is norm bounded and the linear matrix inequality(LMI) optimization method is employed as a stability analysis of the systems. We design a robust controller and show the asymptotical stability of uncertain time-varying systems based on Lyapunov method. Also, we guarantee a specific level of performance of the systems. The simulations are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The finite element analyses of a composite hingeless rotor blade in forward flight have been performed to investigate the influence of blade design parameters on the blade stability. The blade structure is represented by a single cell composite box-beam and its nonclassical effects such as transverse shear and torsion-related warping are considered. The nonlinear periodic differential equations of motion are obtained by moderate deflection beam theory and finite element method based on Hamilton principle. Aerodynamic forces are calculated using the quasi-steady strip theiry with compressibility and reverse flow effects. The coupling effects between the rotor blade and the fuselage are included in a free flight propulsive trim analysis. Damping values are calculated by using the Floquet transition matrix theory from the linearized equations perturbed at equilibrium position of the blade. The aeroelastic results were compared with an alternative analytic approch, and they showed good correlation with each other. Some parametric investigations for the helicopter design variables, such as pretwist and precone angles are carried out to know the aeroelastic behavior of the rotor.

  • The analytical-finite element(FE) squeal model is applied to investigate the squeal propensity associated with contact stiffness of the disc brake system. The system contact stiffness is incorporated into the perturbed equations of motion in the analytical manner where the brake components are modeled by FE method. The results show that the contact stiffness of the friction material and the contact stiffness between the pads and caliper are the influential factors on the squeal propensity. Particularly, the modal instability of the 3200 Hz squeal mode drastically changes with respect to the contact stiffness between the pads and caliper.

  • Derivatives of eigenvalues and eigenvectors for statistical properties is presented. Dynamic response of random system including uncertainties for the design variable is calculated with the first order perturbation method to original governing equation. In optimal design methods, there is fundamental requirement for design gradients. A method for calculating the sensitivity coefficients is developed using the governing equation and first order perturbed equation.

  • The paper describes the study of concurrent subspace optimization(CSSO) for coupled multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) techniques in mechanical systems. This method is a solution to large scale coupled multidisciplinary system, wherein the original problem is decomposed into a set of smaller, more tractable subproblems. Key elements in CSSO are consisted of global sensitivity equation(GSE), subspace optimization (SSO), optimum sensitivity analysis(OSA), and coordination optimization problem(COP) so as to inquiry valanced design solutions finally, Automatic differentiation has an ability to provide a robust sensitivity solution, and have shown the numerical numerical effectiveness over finite difference schemes wherein the perturbed step size in design variable is required. The present paper will develop the automatic differentiation based concurrent subspace optimization(AD-CSSO) in MDO. An automatic differentiation tool in FORTRAN(ADIFOR) will be employed to evaluate sensitivities. The use of exact function derivatives in GSE, OSA and COP makes Possible to enhance the numerical accuracy during the iterative design process. The paper discusses how much influence on final optimal design compared with traditional all-in-one approach, finite difference based CSSO and AD-CSSO applying coupled design variables.

  • This paper deals with robust stability of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems with unstructured uncertainties. A new relation between uncertainties and system poles perturbed by the uncertainties is derived from a graphical analysis. A stability criterion for LTI systems with uncertainties is proposed based on this result. The migration range of the poles in the proposed criterion is represented as the bound of uncertainties, the condition number of a system matrix, and the disc containing the poles of a given nominal system. Unlike the existing methods depending on the solutions of algebraic matrix equations, the proposed criterion provides a simpler way which does not involves algebraic matrix equations, and a more flexible root clustering approach by means of adjusting the center and the radius of the disc as well as the condition number.

  • We have analyzed Gray's observed mean line bisectors of FS, G0, G2, and G5 normal dwarf stars and interpreted them by computing theoretical line bisectors based on a two stream model. A set of perturbed models has been derived, and their detailed structures on temperature fluctuations and velocity fields are presented as a function of depth, which account for the observed bisectors. From the present study, it is found that the degree of stellar convective overshootings and temperature fluctuations in the upper atmospheres increases towards earlier spectral types. The convection cell size inferred from these models is found to increase also with the advancing earlier type. We demonstrated the usefulness of line bisector analysis as a diagnostic probe for stellar convection.

  • For large gas-insulated systems, the conductor utilized possess some degree of surface roughness which locally enhances the applied field at highpressure in $SF_{6}$. In order to investigate the effect of field enhancement on the breakdown field strength, the spheric protrusion was employed which gives a quantitative analysis on field enhancement. For further investigations on the breakdown level and polarity effect in $SF_{6}$, the repeated breakdown tests were performed with d.c. voltage at pressures up to about 4 bar. The experimental results show that the breakdown level does vary noticeably due to successive voltage applications and the breakdown field strength measured for a test gap with the cathode protrusion is markedly lower than that determined from the identical anode protrusion.

  • This paper presents a molten salt reactor (MSR) design parameter sensitivity study using a nodal dynamic modelling methodology with explicitly modified point kinetics equation and Mann's model for heat transfer. Six parameters that can impact MSR safety are evaluated. A MATLAB-Simulink model inspired by Thorcon's 550MWth MSR is used for parameter evaluations. A safety envelope was formed to encapsulate power, maximum and minimum temperature, and temperature-induced reactivity feedback. The parameters are perturbed by ±30%. The parameters were then ranked by their subsequent impact on the considered safety envelope, which ranks acceptable parameter uncertainty. The model is openly available on GitHub.
