A Study on the Establishment of Total Organic Carbon in Drinking Water Standard (총유기탄소의 먹는물 수질기준 설정 연구)

  • In this study, total organic carbon (TOC) and potassium permanganate ($KMnO_4$) demand were examined for raw and finished tap water and the range of $KMnO_4$ demand in drinking water was investigated. By analyzing the relationship between TOC and $KMnO_4$ demand, the applicability of TOC as a drinking water standard and its regulation level was proposed. The average $KMnO_4$ demand was 1.3 mg/L in 4,638 samples from finished drinking water, tap water and finished water from small facilities. $KMnO_4$ demand of 95% of samples was 2.9 mg/L which was 29% of the drinking water standard (10 mg/L). At 12 major drinking water treatment plants, the average $KMnO_4$ demand in July and August was 8.1 and 2.4 mg/L for raw and finished water, respectively. TOC in July and August was 2.0 and 1.15 mg/L for raw and finished water, respectively. The correlation coefficient between $KMnO_4$ demand and TOC was as high as 0.8 in both raw and finished water and $KMnO_4$ demand was twice of TOC in finished water. Because the correlation coefficient and ratio between $KMnO_4$ demand and TOC varied according to season and the characteristics of raw water, it would be difficult to establish TOC standard just from the ratio of $KMnO_4$ demand to TOC. However, it is possible to set the TOC range based on the accumulated $KMnO_4$ demand data or from the satisfactory correlation results. Then, it would be reasonable to establish TOC standard level as 4 ~ 5 mg/L.

A New Sample Preparation Technique for SEM Observation of Polyolefin Microstructure (주사전자현미경상에서의 고분자 미세구조 관찰)

  • In general, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is usually used in the investigation of polymer microstructure. Microtoming, solution casting, staining and carbon replica method are frequently introduced to the study of the polymer morphology with TEM, however the sample preparation procedure of those techniques is very difficult, and it takes a long time. The purpose of this study is to develop a new sample preparation technique which is suitable for the investigation of the various shapes and species of polyolefin microstructure by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By modifying the conventional chemical etching method, we developed a new chemical etching technique and sample preparation procedure that are suitable for SEM study of polymer microstructure. In this study the permanganate etching method is introduced and the optimum etching condition are determined by simply adjusting the etchant formulation, concentration and etching time. This technique has shown good reproducibility and it's morphological results agree well with other works on various types of microstructures such as spherulite characterization of isotatic polypropylene $(\alpha/\beta)$, polyethylene and poly-propylene copolymer characterization, and the study of lamellar growth pattern of unsheared or oriented materials. This technique has also been applied to the industrial fields for characterization of the polyolefin film, automobile products and the others.

Growth and Survival on Different Kinds of Sediment Improvements of Early Spats of the Hard Clam, Meretrix petechialis (LAMARCK) (말백합, Meretrix petechialis (LAMARCK) 초기치패의 저질개선제 종류에 따른 성장 및 생존)

  • The study describes growth and survival on different kinds of sediment improvements of early spats of the hard clam, Meretrix petechialis. Specimens of the mature hard clam were collected in the intertidal zone of Yeonggwang, Korea, July 2011. After transportation, early spats(shell length $196{\pm}14{\mu}m$) collected in mature hard clam were used. Experiment period were July 7 to August 6 in 2011 (30 days). Sediment improvements used iodine(10 ppm), hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$, 5 ppm), sodium hypochlorite (NaClO, 100 ppm), chlorine dioxide($ClO_2$, 100 ppm) and potassium permanganate ($KMnO_4$, 5 ppm). After cultured during 30 days, shell length growth of hard clam were observed $1.04{\pm}0.26mm$ in sodium hypochlorite 100 ppm, $1.03{\pm}0.25mm$ in chlorine dioxide 100 ppm and $1.01{\pm}0.28mm$ in iodine 10 ppm. Survival rate were 31.4% in chlorine dioxide 100 ppm, 12.1% in sodium hypochlorite 100 ppm, 11.6% in iodine 10 ppm, 1.5% in hydrogen peroxide 5 ppm and 0% in potassium permanganate 5 ppm.

Chimie Douce Synthesis of Chalcogen-Doped Manganese Oxides (칼코겐이 도핑된 망간 산화물의 저온합성 연구)

  • manganese oxides have been prepared by Chimie Douce redox reaction between permanganate and chalcogen element fine powder under acidic condition (pH = 1). According to powder X-ray diffraction analyses, the S- and Se-doped manganese oxides are crystallized with layered birnessite and tunnel-type -MnO2 structures, respectively. On the contrary, Te-doped compound was found to be X-ray amorphous. According to EDS analyses, these compounds contain chalcogen dopants with the ratio of chalcogen/manganese = 4-7%. We have investigated the chemical bonding character of these materials with X-ray absorption spectroscopic (XAS) analysis. Mn K-edge XAS results clearly demonstrated that the manganese ions are stabilized in octahedral symmetry with the mixed oxidation states of +3/+4. On the other hand, according to Se K- and Te L1-edge XAS results, selenium and tellurium elements have the high oxidation states of +6, which is surely due to the oxidation of neutral chalcogen element by the strong oxidant permanganate ion. Taking into account their crystal structures and Mn oxidation states, the obtained manganese oxides are expected to be applicable as electrode materials for lithium secondary batteries.

Recoil Effects of Neutron-Irradiated Metal Permanganates (중성자조사 금속 과망간산염의 반조효과)

  • The chemical effects resulting from the capture of the thermal neutron by manganese in various crystalline permanganates, that is, potassium permanganate ammonium permangante and barium permanganate, have been investigated. The effect of pH of solvent on the distribution of radioactive manganese chemical species, that is, cationic $^{56}$ Mn, $^{56}$ MnO$_2$ and $^{56}$ MnO$_4$$^{[-10]}$ produced in the permanganates by $^{55}$ Mn(n, r) $^{56}$ Mn reaction was studied by using various adsorbents and ion-exchanger, that is, zeolite A-3, kaolinite, alumina, manganese dioxide and Dowex-50 The distribution of radioactive MnO$_4$$^{[-10]}$ in kaolinite and alumina has higher than that in other adsorbents and ion-exchanger at a representative pH value of 4, 7 and 9, respectively. The yield of radioactive MnO$_4$$^{[-10]}$ is higher at pH 4 End pH 9 than at pH 7. The thermal annealing behavior of recoil manganese atoms produced in the permanganates by $^{55}$ Mn(n, r) $^{56}$ Mn reaction was also studied. The retention of MnO$_4$$^{[-10]}$ in the thermal annealing is increased as annealing temperature increases when it was treated at 10$0^{\circ}C$ and 13$0^{\circ}C$. The recoil effect of permanganates was explained by the hot zone model.

PEG Distribution in the Cell Walls of PEG-treated Woods using SEM-EDS (SEM-EDS를 이용한 PEG처리재 세포벽내의 PEG분포 분석)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the distribution and penetration of PEG molecules into the cell wall of wood by SEM-EDS method. SEM observation indicated that the cell walls of PEG-treated specimen were swollen, and didn't show any change in their shapes, while the cells of untreated specimen were more or less collapsed. The results of X-ray analyses of potassium stained samples revealed the distribution of the impregnated chemicals within the cell walls, when considering the distribution of potassium ions in the cell walls. Consequently, this study supported the possibility of PEG molecules penetrated into the wood cell wall play an important role in enhancing the dimensional stability of wood.

Influence of Plant Growth Substances on Cytolysome-like Organelles in the Mesophyll Cells of Soybean (식물생장소가 대두 엽육세포의 Cytolysome-like Organelle에 미치는 영향)

  • Leaf tissue of Glycine max Merr. was fixed in para-formaldehyde-glutarldehyde and postfixed in osmium tetroxide or postassium permanganate for electron microscopy. The origin of cytolysome-like organelles of mesophyll cell was studied and changes of fine structure of the organelles according to treating solutions such as gibberellin (GA), kinethin (KI), 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid(2, 4-D) or 2, 4-D+GA(1mg/l, respectively) were observed. The cylolysome-like organelles differentiate in endoplasmic reticulum and plasmalemma, and they drop into vacuoles being isolated from the formers. They seem to change into myelin-like structure and to be degenerated by autodigestion. Cytolysome-like organelles involved in cell walls and vacuoles showed activity of acid phosphatase. In the group of GA and KI treatment, cytolysome-like organelles were similar to that of the control group. But in the treatmental groups of 2,4-D and 2,4-D+GA, myelin-like structures increased in size and autodigestion of this organelles were similar to that of the control group. But in the treatmental groups of 2,4-D and 2,4-D+GA, myelin-like structures increased in size and autodigestion of this organelle seemed to be accelerated. In the treatmental group of 2,4-D+GA, myelin-like structures shown high electron density were observed in cytoplasm and vacuoles together.

Studies on Quality Maintenance of Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Using Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MA포장 기술을 이용한 신선한 과실 및 채소류의 품질보존에 대한 연구)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the methods of quality maintenance using modified atmosphere packaging with various quality preservatives at ambient and low temperatures. Ethylene(<1.0ppm) accumulated during modified atmosphere storage of Chinese cabbage using polyethylene film(60$\mu\textrm{m}$) caused quality deterioration such as yellowing and abscission. The addition of potassium permanganate reduced ethylene level and thus extended storage life of l00% at 20$^{\circ}C$ and 140% at 0$^{\circ}C$. To establish the storage conditions of minimally processed sit and vegetables, the experiment was conducted with various quality preservatives and packaging materials. Ceramic film(Zeolite 7%, 60$\mu\textrm{m}$) showed increasing storage life of 50%, reducing total microbial counts of 50% and keeping high appearance quality of minimally processed pears stored at 20$^{\circ}C$ and 0$^{\circ}C$. Minimally processed Chinese cabbage treated with l% CaCl2 at 20$^{\circ}C$, and 1% CaCl2 and 1% NaCl at 0$^{\circ}C$ has a longer storage life of 90% with good maketable quality. Treatment of 1% NaCl for cut Asian penis appeared increased storage life of 100%, decreased cut surface browning and the best overall acceptability by a sensory panel.

Electrochemical Properties of Manganese Oxide coated onto Carbon Nanotubes for Energy Storage Applications (보조에너지원으로서의 수퍼커패시터용 나노전극소재로서의 탄소/망간산화물의 전기화학적 특성)

  • Birnessite-type manganese dioxide($MnO_2$) was coated uniformly onto carbon nanotubes (CNTs) through a spontaneous direct redox reaction between CNTs and permanganate ions($MnO_4\;^-$). The initial specific capacitance of the $MnO_2/CNT$ nanocomposite in an organic electrolyte at a large current density of 1 A/g was 250 F/g, which is equivalent to 139 mAh/g based on the total weight of the electrode material including the electroactive material, conducting agent and binder. The specific capacitance of the $MnO_2$ in the $MnO_2/CNT$ nanocomposite was as high as 580 F/g (320 mAh/g), indicating excellent electrochemical utilization of the $MnO_2$. The addition of CNTs as a conducting agent can improve the high rate capability of $MnO_2/CNT$ nanocomposite considerably. An analysis of the in-situ X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) showed an improvement in the structural and electrochemical reversibility of the $MnO_2/CNT$ nanocomposite by heat-treatment.

  • A study on the acute toxicity in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus fry showed that the 24hr-$LC_{50}$ was 18.6% for NaCl,152 ppm for formaline and 2.1 ppm for $KMnO_4$. The fry responded to narrow range of concentration of all the tested chemicals and their toxic effects were dose-dependent.
