The back emf harmonics of a permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor is a major source of torque ripple. For torque control applications including column fitted MDPS (motor driven power steering) systems, it is essential to reduce the mechanical vibrations due to torque ripples at low speeds. In this paper, a torque ripple reduction algorithm for interior PM synchronous motors is proposed. The harmonic currents that cancel the $6^{th}$ order torque harmonic are added to the nominal dq currents for MTPA (maximum torque per ampere) operation. The compensated harmonic currents are derived from flux linkage harmonics based on a FFT analysis of the back emf harmonics. Simulation and experimental results verify that the $6^{th}$ order torque harmonic and THD of the torque ripple are reduced by compensating the dq harmonic currents.

This paper presents an advanced method for an initial pole position estimation of a Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor(PMLSM) that has an accurate incremental encoder for servo applications but does not have Hall sensors as a magnetic pole sensor. By appropriately using the secant method as a numerical method the proposed algorithm finds either of two zero force positions and then the correct d-axis by applying a q-axis test current. It only requires the tuned current controller and the relative position information md so it can be simply applicable to a rotary PMSM. The experimental results show the validity of the proposed method, which has an excellent performance with respect to an accurate pole position estimation under the minimal moving distance(average of about 85㎛) during the estimation process.
Effect of coulomb friction and backlash on the single loop position control has been studied for the precision position control. We have showed the limit cycle on the single loop system which used a ball screw that had the backlash. Also, we have made an inner loop with a classical velocity and torque controller which was forcing the current of d axis to be zero by using a permanent-magnet synchronous motor and composed the outer loop with linear encoder for sensing a position of the loader. Also, we have used least squares fit(LSF) observer for reducing noise when we got velocity from position outputs. We have shown a good result by using the dual loop through simulation and experiment.

The interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is often used for the traction motor of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) due to its high power density and wide speed range. This paper introduces the 120kW class IPMSM for traction motors in military trucks. This system, as a SHEV (series hybrid electric vehicle), requires a traction motor that can generate high torque. This study introduces a way to reduce costs by proposing a design approach that creates reluctance torque that can be maximized by varying the dq-axis inductance. If a model designed by a design approach meets the desired torque, the magnetic torque can be reduced by an amount equal to the increase in reluctance torque and consequently the amount of permanent magnets can be reduced. A reduction gear and high speed operation of motors are necessary for the miniaturization of the motor. Thus, a fairly large centrifugal force is generated due to the high speed rotation. This force causes mechanical interference between the rotor and the stator, and a design approach for adding an iron bridge is explained to solve the interference. In this study, the initial model and the improved model that reduces cost and improves mechanical durability are compared by FEA, and the models are produced. Finally, the FEM results were verified experimentally.
The Direct Torque Control (DTC) technique for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) is receiving increased attention due to its simplicity and robust dynamic response when compared with other control techniques. The classical switching table based DTC results in large flux and torque ripples in the motors. Several studies have been reported in the literature on classical DTC. However, there are only limited studies that actually discuss or evaluate the classical DTC. This paper proposes, novel switching table / DTC methods for PMSMs to reduce torque ripples. In this paper, two DTC schemes are proposed. The six sector and twelve sector methodology is considered in DTC scheme I and DTC scheme II, respectively. In both DTC schemes a simple modification is made to the classical DTC structure. The two level inverter available in the classical DTC is eliminated by replacing it with a three level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) inverter. To further improve the performance of the proposed DTC scheme I, the available 27 voltage vectors are allowed to form different groups of voltage vectors such as Large - Zero (LZ), Medium - Zero (MZ) and Small - Zero (SZ), where as in DTC scheme II, all of the voltage vectors are considered to form a switching table. Based on these groups, a novel switching table is proposed. The proposed DTC schemes are comparatively investigated with the classical DTC and existing literatures through theory analysis and computer simulations. The superiority of the proposed DTC method is also confirmed by experimental results. It can be observed that the proposed techniques can significantly reduces the torque ripples and improves the quality of current waveform when compared with traditional and existing methods.
This paper presents a vector control implementation for SPMSM(Surface-mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) using dSPACE 1104 system and MATLAB/SIMULINK. SPMSM can be treated as a DC motor provided that currents of flux and torque component are controlled independently using vector control. Therefore various control algorithms for conventional DC motor control can be adopted to SPMSM. The system is designed to improve set-point tracking capability, fast response, and accuracy. In This paper, d-q equivalent modeling of PMSM is derived based on vector control theory. The PI controller is used for speed control and state feedback PI current control method is used for current control. For the implementation of high performance vector control system, dSPACE 1104 system is used. Simulations and experiments were carried out to examine validity of the proposed vector control implementation.

This paper presents neural load torque observer that is used to deadbeat load torque observer and gain compensation by parameter estimator As a result, the response of the PMSM(permanent magnet synchronous motor) follows that nominal plant. The load torque compensation method is composed of a neural deadbeat observer To reduce the noise effect, the post-filter implemented by MA(moving average) process, is adopted. The parameter compensator with RLSM (recursive least square method) parameter estimator is adopted to increase the performance of the load torque observer and main controller The parameter estimator is combined with a high performance neural load torque observer to resolve the problems. The neural network is trained in on-line phases and it is composed by a feed forward recall and error back-propagation training. During the normal operation, the input-output response is sampled and the weighting value is trained multi-times by error back-propagation method at each sample period to accommodate the possible variations in the parameters or load torque. As a result, the proposed control system has a robust and precise system against the load torque and the Parameter variation. A stability and usefulness are verified by computer simulation and experiment.

This study presents a solution to control a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor without sensors based on the superposition principle. Because the proposed method of sensorless theory is very simple to compute the estimated angle, computing time to estimate the angle is shorter than other sensorless method. The use of this system yields enhanced operations, fewer system components, lower system cost, energy efficient control system design and increased efficiency. The performance of a sensorless architecture allows an intelligent approach to reduce the complete system costs of the digital motion control applications using cheaper electrical motors without sensors. This paper deals with an overview of sensorless solutions in PMSM control applications whereby the focus will be on the new controller without sensors and its applications.
The purpose of this paper is to study a high-performance control scheme for neutral-point-clamping three-level (NPC-3L) inverter fed dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives by considering some asymmetric factors such as the non-identical parameters in phase windings. To implement this, the system model is analyzed for dual three-phase PMSM drives with asymmetric factors based on the vector space decomposition (VSD) principle. Based on the equivalent circuits, PI controllers with feedforward compensation are used in the d-q subspace for regulating torque, where the cut-off frequency of the PI controllers are set at the twice the fundamental frequency for compensating both the additional DC component and the second order component caused by asymmetry. Meanwhile, proportional resonant (PR) controllers are proposed in the x-y subspace for suppressing the possible unbalanced currents in the phase windings. A dual three-phase space vector modulation (DT-SVM) is designed for the drive, and the balancing factor is designed based on the numerical fitting surface for balancing the DC link capacitor voltages. Experimental results are given to demonstrate the validity of the theoretical analysis and the proposed control scheme.

In this paper, an operating algorithm for single-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor based on PR current controller is proposed. In general, an asymmetric gap may occur depending on the shape of the rotor of single-phase PMSM, and this causes noise and vibration during high-speed operation. Therefore, in this paper, an operating algorithm for a single-phase PMSM usihng a proportional resonant current conrtoller with excellent control stability was proposed. Proportional resonant current controller has on steady state error is relatevly robust against distortion. Also, steady state error of AC input can be eleminated without complicated calculation process. The validity and availability of the proposed algorithm are verified through the experiment.
