Cell Autonomous Circadian Systems and Their Relation to Inflammation

  • All living beings on earth have an important mechanism of 24-h periodicity, which controls their physiology, metabolism, and behavior. In humans, 24-h periodicity is regulated by the superchiasmatic nucleus (SCN) through external and environmental cues. Peripheral organs demonstrate circadian rhythms and circadian clock functions, and these are also observed in cultured cell lines. Every cell contains a CLOCK: BMAL1 loop for the generation of circadian rhythms. In this review, we focused on cell autonomous circadian rhythms in immune cells, the inflammatory diseases caused by disruption of circadian rhythms in hormones, and the role of clock genes in inflammatory diseases.

의복단서, 지각자변인이 여자한복착용자의 인상형성에 미치는 영향(I) - 의복단서를 중심으로 - (Effect of Clothing cues and perceiver variables on Impression Formation of Female dressed in Korean Dress(Part I) - Focus on Clothing Cues -)

  • Nineteen stimulus photograghs varied in hue and color scheme of one clothing style of Korean dress worn by a female were used to investigate the effect of color color scheme and structure on impression formation for Korean dress. Subjects were 77 male and 86 female undergraduate and graduate students. The stimuli c9onsisted of two sets(cool and warm) of four similar color schemes two sets (cool and warm in Chima color) of five contrasting color schemes and one extra stimulus triad 3 hue base. Structures were de-fined by color schemes of Kit.Korum toward the color schemes of Jokori and Chima. Stimu-lus photogragh selected from Korean dress fashion magazines was managed and varied in hues and color schemes to Kit Korum Jokori and Chima according to Korean Standard Color through scanning and Adobe photoshop 3.0 program and then pictured through slide printer(HR-6000). Each subject assessed 19 stimulus color photographs with incorporated 7 point semantic differential response scale. The data were analyzed by frequency mean factor analysis t-test ANOVA and Scheffe test. Results indicate impression ofrmations are af-fected by clothing cues. 1) Four factors emerged to account for dimensional structure of impressions of female features on Korean dress. These four factors were titled as(1) preference.evaluation (2) individuality.attention (3) youth and (4) friendshio. The preference.evaluation factor was the largest including eleven adjectives and accounting for 29.62% of the variances. 2) Almost every clothing cue(color, color scheme, structure) had some effects on im-pressions formed But the color of Chima did not form the effects on impression of prefer-ence.evaluation factor. The effect of related color scheme was the most influential clothing cue on impressions of preference.evalation factor and friendship factor whereas the ef-fect of contrasting color scheme was the most influential clothing cue on impressions of indi-viduality.attention factor and youth factor. The effect of cool color of Chima was the most influential clothing cue on impression of indi-viduality.attention factor whereas the effect of warm color of Chima was the most influen-tial clothing cue on impressions of youth factor and friendship factor. The effect of Jokori/Chima.Kit.Korum structure was the most influential clothing cue on impressions of pref-erence.evaluation factor and youth factor whereas the effect of Kit.Korum/Jokori.Chima structure was the most influential clothing cue on impressions of individuality.attention factor and friendship factor. 3) The interaction effects were appeared among clothing cues. Significant interaction effects between color schemes(similar and contrasting) and colors of Chima(cool and warm were appeared on impressions of prefer-ence.evaluation factor imdividuality.atten-tion factor and friendship factor, Significant interaction effects between color schemes (similar and contrasting) and structures (Jokori.Chima.Kit.Korum; Jokori.Kit.Koru-m/Chima;Jokori/Chima.Kit.Korum;Kit.Korum/Jokori.Chima) were appeared on impressions of preference.evaluation factor youth factor and friendship factor. Signifi-cant interaction effects between colors(cool and warm) and structures were appeared on impressions of individuality.attention factor youth factor and friendship factor. Sighifi-cant interaction effects between colors(cool and warm) and structures were appeared on impressions of individuality.attention factor youth factor and friendship factor. Significant interaction effects among clothing cues(color color schemes and structures) were appeared on all impression factors. The friendship factor was the most friquently affected impression factor by interaction effects among clothing cues. In summary the clothing was used as nonverbal cues in the effect on impression for-mation of female dressed in Korean dress. it concluded that color schemes worked as cen-tral traits and colors of Chima and structures worked as peripheral traits in the formation of impression of the female clothed in Korean dress. hence organizing our impressions with respect to the parts of the Korean dress in re-lation to the whole holistic perceptual pro-cess Gestalt approach was used and supported.

기업의 스마트폰 메시지에 대한 고객 신뢰도에 관한 연구: 메시지 정교화 모델을 중심으로 (The Effect of Message Completeness and Leakage Cues on the Credibility of Mobile Promotion Messages )

  • 지금까지 스마트폰 문자 메시지와 관련한 연구는 보안 및 프라이버시 우려 측면에서 제한적으로 이루어져 왔다. 그러나 기업들이 소비자를 대상으로 프로모션 메시지를 전달할 때 어떤 메시지가 효과적인지 규명하는 시도는 많지 않았다. 본 연구는 스마트폰의 메시지 신뢰도를 저하하는 신호를 정교화 가능성 모델에 적용하여 분석하였다. 메시지의 신호는 내용 상의 신호와 수신자가 세심한 검토 없이 의사결정을 하도록 하는 누설 신호(맞춤법 및 특수문자, 축약 링크, 신뢰할 수 없는 발신자 등)로 나눌 수 있다. 이 중 내용 상의 신호에 조절효과를 주는 요소는 맥락화로 메시지가 자신과 상관있다고 느끼는 정도(관여도)이다. 메시지의 신호가 스마트폰 사용자의 메시지 신뢰도에 주는 영향을 검증하기 위해 모바일에서 쿠폰발행 메시지를 받는 시나리오를 바탕으로 166명 대상의 서베이 실험을 진행하였다. 분석 결과, 누설 신호는 유의한 수준으로 신뢰도에 부정적 영향을 주었고, 내용 상의 결함은 근소한 수준에서 부정적 영향을 주었다. 주목할 점은 고맥락화 메시지에 내용 상의 결함이 있으면 유의한 수준으로 신뢰도에 부정적 영향을 주었으나, 저맥락화된 메시지의 경우에는 신뢰도에 영향을 주지 않았으며, 메시지에 누설 신호가 있으면 맥락화 정도와 상관없이 신뢰도가 저하되었다는 것이다. 이는 기업들이 모바일을 통한 프로모션을 진행할 때 관여도가 높은 상품을 골라 고객 맞춤형으로 문자 메시지를 작성하고, 메시지에는 내용 상의 결함이 없도록 하는 것이 중요하다는 시사점을 제공한다.

Primary cilia in energy balance signaling and metabolic disorder

  • Energy homeostasis in our body system is maintained by balancing the intake and expenditure of energy. Excessive accumulation of fat by disrupting the balance system causes overweight and obesity, which are increasingly becoming global health concerns. Understanding the pathogenesis of obesity focused on studying the genes related to familial types of obesity. Recently, a rare human genetic disorder, ciliopathy, links the role for genes regulating structure and function of a cellular organelle, the primary cilium, to metabolic disorder, obesity and type II diabetes. Primary cilia are microtubule based hair-like membranous structures, lacking motility and functions such as sensing the environmental cues, and transducing extracellular signals within the cells. Interestingly, the subclass of ciliopathies, such as Bardet-Biedle and Alström syndrome, manifest obesity and type II diabetes in human and mouse model systems. Moreover, studies on genetic mouse model system indicate that more ciliary genes affect energy homeostasis through multiple regulatory steps such as central and peripheral actions of leptin and insulin. In this review, we discuss the latest findings in primary cilia and metabolic disorders, and propose the possible interaction between primary cilia and the leptin and insulin signal pathways which might enhance our understanding of the unambiguous link of a cell's antenna to obesity and type II diabetes.

참여형 멀티미디어 시스템 사용자 감성평가를 위한 다차원 심물리학적 척도 체계 (Development of Multiple-modality Psychophysical Scaling System for Evaluating Subjective User Perception of the Participatory Multimedia System)

  • A comprehensive psychophysical scaling system, multiple-modality magnitude estimation system (MMES) has been designed to measure subjective multidimensional human perception. Unlike paper-based magnitude estimation systems, the MMES has an additional auditory peripheral cue that varies with corresponding visual magnitude. As the simplest, purely psychological case, bimodal divided-attention conditions were simulated to establish the superiority of the MMES. Subjects were given brief presentations of pairs of simultaneous stimuli consisting of visual line-lengths and auditory white-noise levels. In the visual or auditory focused-attention conditions, only the line-lengths or the noise levels perceived should be reported respectively. On the other hand, in the divided-attention conditions, both the line-lengths and the noise levels should be reported. There were no significant differences among the different attention conditions. Human performance was better when the proportion of magnitude in stimulus pairs were identically presented. The additional auditory cues in the MMES improved the correlations between the magnitude of stimuli and MMES values in the divided-attention conditions.

Gut Microbiota-Derived Short-Chain Fatty Acids, T Cells, and Inflammation

  • T cells are central players in the regulation of adaptive immunity and immune tolerance. In the periphery, T cell differentiation for maturation and effector function is regulated by a number of factors. Various factors such as antigens, co-stimulation signals, and cytokines regulate T cell differentiation into functionally specialized effector and regulatory T cells. Other factors such as nutrients, micronutrients, nuclear hormones and microbial products provide important environmental cues for T cell differentiation. A mounting body of evidence indicates that the microbial metabolites short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) have profound effects on T cells and directly and indirectly regulate their differentiation. We review the current status of our understanding of SCFA functions in regulation of peripheral T cell activity and discuss their impact on tissue inflammation.

수용자의 인지정교화 가능성 수준이 프레이밍 효과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (An Analysis of the Relationship between the Level of Elaboration Likelihood and the News Framing Effects)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 수용자의 인지정교화 가능성과 뉴스 프레임 효과의 관계를 분석하는 것이다. 이를 위해 서로 다른 프레임과 메시지 특성이 적용된 기사를 수용자에게 노출시키는 실험을 통해서 뉴스 프레임 효과가 수용자의 인지정교화 수준에 따라 어떻게 변화하는지를 살펴보았다. 연구 결과, 수용자의 이슈에 대한 관여도가 높을수록 뉴스 프레임에 대한 동조화 정도가 높은 반면, 수용자가 비평적으로 사고하는 성향이 강할수록 뉴스 프레임에 대한 동조화는 적거나 역방향으로 나타나고 있다. 따라서 수용자 요인 중에서 비평적 사고를 즐기는 성향은 높은 수준의 인지정교화를 결정짓는 요인이긴 하지만, 반드시 프레이밍 효과로까지 이어지는 요인은 아니었다. 관여도가 낮은 이슈일수록 수용자들은 주변경로로 정보를 처리하는 경우가 많은 것으로 확인되었다. 메시지 특성 변인으로 논증과 단서의 양이 많을수록 프레임에 대한 동조화 정도가 높은 것으로 확인되었다. 논증과 단서의 양이 적을수록 수용자들은 주변경로를 통해 정보를 처리하는 경우가 많았다. 관여도의 경우, 고관여 이슈에서는 단서보다 논증의 양에 따라서 프레이밍 효과가 결정되는 반면, 저관여 이슈에서는 단서의 양에 따라서 프레이밍의 효과의 차이가 나타나고 있다.

Seeing is Believing: Illuminating the Source of In Vivo Interleukin-7

  • Interleukin-7 (IL-7) is an essential cytokine for T cells. However, IL-7 is not produced by T cells themselves such that T cells are dependent on extrinsic IL-7. In fact, in the absence of IL-7, T cell development in the thymus as well as survival of naive T cells in the periphery is severely impaired. Furthermore, modulating IL-7 availability in vivo either by genetic means or other experimental approaches determines the size, composition and function of the T cell pool. Consequently, understanding IL-7 expression is critical for understanding T cell immunity. Until most recently, however, the spatiotemporal expression of in vivo IL-7 has remained obscured. Shortage of such information was partly due to scarce expression of IL-7 itself but mainly due to the lack of adequate reagents to monitor IL-7 expression in vivo. This situation dramatically changed with a recent rush of four independent studies that describe the generation and characterization of IL-7 reporter mice, all utilizing bacterial artificial chromosome transgene technology. The emerging consensus of these studies confirmed thymic stromal cells as the major producers of IL-7 but also identified IL-7 reporter activities in various peripheral tissues including skin, intestine and lymph nodes. Strikingly, developmental and environmental cues actively modulated IL-7 reporter activities in vivo suggesting that IL-7 regulation might be a new mechanism of shaping T cell development and homeostasis. Collectively, the availability of these new tools opens up new venues to assess unanswered questions in IL-7 biology in T cells and beyond.

하지 허혈 유발에 따른 선형 운동 역치 변화 (Effect of Lower Limb Ischemia on Linear Motion Perception)

  • 말초 신경 병변 환자들에게 하지 체성감각의 저하는 균형 능력 저하와 관련이 있다. 일반적으로 균형 능력은 운동 결과를 측정하여 평가하여 왔다. 그러나 인체 움직임은 다양한 감각 신호들이 통합된 운동지각에 의해 유발된다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 하지 체성감각의 저하는 운동 지각 능력 또한 저하시킬 것이라는 가정하에, 이를 확인하기 위하여 허혈에 의한 하지 체성 감각 저하를 유도하였고, 이때의 피부감각 민감도 및 선형 운동 방향 지각 능력의 변화를 측정 하였다. 이 결과 발바닥 체성감각 저하 유도시에는 운동 지각 역시 저하되었다. 그러나 운동 결과에 해당하는 압력 중심은 변화하지 않았다. 따라서, 운동 지각 측정이 체성 감각 저하를 조기 발견할 수 있는 평가 방법으로 사용될 수 있음을 확인하였다.

Harnessing the Power of IL-7 to Boost T Cell Immunity in Experimental and Clinical Immunotherapies

  • The cytokine IL-7 plays critical and nonredundant roles in T cell immunity so that the abundance and availability of IL-7 act as key regulatory mechanisms in T cell immunity. Importantly, IL-7 is not produced by T cells themselves but primarily by non-lymphoid lineage stromal cells and epithelial cells that are limited in their numbers. Thus, T cells depend on cell extrinsic IL-7, and the amount of in vivo IL-7 is considered a major factor in maximizing and maintaining the number of T cells in peripheral tissues. Moreover, IL-7 provides metabolic cues and promotes the survival of both naïve and memory T cells. Thus, IL-7 is also essential for the functional fitness of T cells. In this regard, there has been an extensive effort trying to increase the protein abundance of IL-7 in vivo, with the aim to augment T cell immunity and harness T cell functions in anti-tumor responses. Such approaches started under experimental animal models, but they recently culminated into clinical studies, with striking effects in re-establishing T cell immunity in immunocompromised patients, as well as boosting anti-tumor effects. Depending on the design, glycosylation, and the structure of recombinantly engineered IL-7 proteins and their mimetics, recombinant IL-7 molecules have shown dramatic differences in their stability, efficacy, cellular effects, and overall immune functions. The current review is aimed to summarize the past and present efforts in the field that led to clinical trials, and to highlight the therapeutical significance of IL-7 biology as a master regulator of T cell immunity.
