  • In this letter, a miniaturized log-periodic dipole array (LPDA) antenna operating from 1 GHz to 6 GHz is proposed for portable direction finding applications. To reduce the lateral size of an LPDA antenna, bow-tie elements and a top-loading technique are utilized and spacing factor is decreased to reduce the spacing between the LPDA elements. The proposed miniaturized LPDA antenna has the measured gain and front-to-back ratio ranging from 1.2 dBi to 3 dBi and from 7 dB to 22 dB, respectively.

  • A parametric study has been carried out to elucidate the characteristics of channel flow with a streamwise-periodic array of cylinders. This flow configuration is relevant to heat exchanger applications. The presence of cylinders in channel flow causes the attached wall boundary layer to separate, leading to significant change in flow instabilities. There exist two kinds of instabilities; flow undergoes a primary instability (Hopf bifurcaiton) at a lower Reynolds number, and the unsteady two-dimensional flow becomes unstable to three-dimensional disturbances at a higher Reynolds number. We report here the dependencies of the primary instability as well as the flow characteristics of the subsequent unsteady flow including flow-induced forces and Strouhal number of vortex shedding, on the distance between the cylinder and the channel wall.

  • The physical model considered here is a horizontal layer of fluid heated below and cooled above with a periodic array of evenly spaced square cylinders placed at the center of the layer, whose aspect ratio here varies from unity to twelve. Periodic boundary condition is employed along the horizontal direction to allow for lateral freedom for the convection cells. Two-dimensional solution for unsteady natural convection is obtained using an accurate and efficient Chebyshev spectral multi-domain methodology for a given Rayleigh numbers of $10^{6}$.

  • In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) image correlator by use of computational integral imaging reconstruction based on the modified convolution property of periodic functions (CPPF) for recognition of partially occluded objects. In the proposed correlator, elemental images of the reference and target objects are picked up by a lenslet array, and subsequently are transformed to a sub-image array which contains different perspectives according to the viewing direction. The modified version of the CPPF is applied to the sub-images. This enables us to produce the plane sub-image arrays without the magnification and superimposition processes used in the conventional methods. With the modified CPPF and the sub-image arrays, we reconstruct the reference and target plane sub-image arrays according to the reconstruction plane. 3D object recognition is performed through cross-correlations between the reference and the target plane sub-image arrays. To show the feasibility of the proposed method, some preliminary experiments on the target objects are carried out and the results are presented. Experimental results reveal that the use of plane sub-image arrays enables us to improve the correlation performance, compared to the conventional method using the computational integral imaging reconstruction algorithm.

  • Present study deals with a three phase flow problem of determining drag acting on spheres wetted by liquid flow by gas flow through the spheres in simple cubic (SC), body-center cubic (BCC) and face-centered cubic (FCC) array, respectively, when the inertia of gas is negligibly small. The liquid flow driven by gravity on the spheres is assumed to be unaffected by the countercurrent gas flow. A perturbation method coupled with a multipole expansion method is used to calculate the hydrodynamic interactions between spheres and hence determine the effect of liquid film and flow on the gas flow for each periodic array of spheres. An approximate method for evaluating the effect of the liquid film is also presented for simple estimations. It is found that the approximation results are in a reasonable agreement with the numerical calculations.

  • A new concept of forming self-aligned multidomains is used for fabricating wide-viewing liquid crystal displays (LCDs) with periodic surface gratings. An array of the periodic surface gratings is produced on substrates using a photosensitive polymer by the illumination o. the UV light through a patterned photomask. A multidomain structure is naturally formed on the grating surface by the initial director distortions together with continuous variations of an external electric field. The LCD cells with periodic surface gratings are found to show excellent extinction in the off-state and wide-viewing property m the on-state.

  • Effect of computational domain size in simulating of periodic obstacle flow has been investigated for the flow past tube banks. Reynolds number, defined by freestream velocity (U) and cylinder diameter (d), was fixed as 200, and center-to-center distance (P) as 1.5d. In-line square array was considered. Drag coefficient, lift coefficient and Strouhal number were calculated depending on domain size. Circular cylinders were implemented on a Cartesian grid system by using an immersed boundary method. Boundary condition is periodic in both streamwise and lateral directions. Previous studies in literature often use a square domain with a side length of P, which contains only one cylinder. However, this study reveals that size is improper. Especially, RMS values of flow-induced forces are most sensitive to the domain size.

  • Scan Element Pattern(SEP) and Scan Impedance(SI) concepts are used to analyze the characteristics of open-ended waveguide array, which is the representative phased array antenna element in C-band and X-band. Transmit SEP's are calculated for 15$\sim$15 subarray and SI's are obtained by applying periodic boundary conditions for a unit cell of the given array condition. CST's MWS and Ansoft's HFSS are utilized for each analysis. Some relations are reviewed between the two results, which are based on mutual coupling effects. For validation purpose, an 8$\sim$8 subarray is constructed and tested. Transmit SEP measured in MTG's far-field range shows good agreement with the calculated transmit SEP.

  • In this paper, the leaky wave readiation characteristics of a microstrip rectangular patch array is presented. The reflection and transmission characteristics are analyzed using the equivalent transmission line method. Since the leaky wave is generated from the periodic array, using the Floquet'theorem, leaky wave frequency range is predicted and confirmed by the measured reflection and transmission characterstics of the array. A 17 element microstrip patch array at X-Band is designed and tested. Teh scattering Characteristics show good agreement woth those obtained from the equivalent transmission line analysis. The radiatio characteristics at 10GHz using this method show about 3${\circ}$ shift in main lobe angle compared with measured results.
