  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the capacity of 2% chlorhexidine gel associated with 8% papain gel in comparison with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite in bovine pulp tissue dissolution. Materials and Methods: Ninety bovine pulps of standardized sizes were used and fragmented into 5-mm sizes. The fragments were removed from the root middle third region. They were divided into 6 experimental groups (n = 15), 1) 8% papain; 2) 2% chlorhexidine; 3) 2% chlorhexidine associated with 8% papain; 4) 0.9% saline solution; 5) 2.5% sodium hypochlorite; and 6) 5.25% sodium hypochlorite. The pulp fragments were weighed and put into immobile test tubes for dissolution for time intervals of 30, 60, 90, and 120 min. Results: The 5.25% sodium hypochlorite had greater dissolution potential than the pure papain, and when associated with chlorhexidine, both promoted greater dissolution than did the saline solution and 2% chlorhexidine groups (p < 0.05). The 2.5% sodium hypochlorite promoted dissolution to a lesser extent than the groups with papain within a period of 30 min (p < 0.05), but, was comparable to the saline solution and chlorhexidine. After 120 min, the 2.5% and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite promoted dissolution of 100% of the pulp fragments, and papain, 61%, while chlorhexidine associated with papain and chlorhexidine alone dissolved only 55% and 3%, respectively. Conclusions: The 8% papain in gel, both alone and in association with chlorhexidine, was able to dissolve bovine pulp tissue, but to a lesser extent than did 5.25% sodium hypochlorite.

  • The phenomenon of the shrinkage of silk fibers induced by inorganic salts including LiBr, $Ca(NO_3){_2}$, and $CaCl_2$, has been studied up to the present as one of the finishing methods of silk. It is expected that the shrinkage phenomenon may greatly contribute to the realization of the high sensibility of silk fibers. Especially the shrinkage enables the expression of three-dimensional appearance of silk fabrics along with the improvements in dimensional stability, resilience in stretching, and comfort. Numerous theoretical studies on the contraction phenomenon by $Ca(NO_3){_2}$ have been conducted so far. These studies have focused mostly on the silk fibers. It is difficult to find studies on silk fabrics. The negative aspects of the finishing are such as strength drop, yellowish discoloration, and fiber damage. These should also be considered as well as the positive aspects. In this study, the phenomenon of salt shrinkage is diversely reviewed by applying $Ca(NO_3){_2}$ solution for the silk fabrics as objects. The changes in the air permeability, thickness, and color were investigated with focus on the shrinkage of the silk fabrics according to the changes in treatment conditions. Some findings from this study are as follows: Within short period of time at the initiation of salt shrinkage, the salt shrinkage proceeds effectively. In the case of concentration of 47.4%, or 46.3% of $Ca(NO_3){_2}$ solution, appropriate treatment time seems to be 20seconds, or $2{\sim}8$minutes, respectively. Excessive shrinkage is obtained when lower liquor ratio is adopted. As a result, the condition is acting extremely disadvantageously against the thickness and yellow discoloration aspects.

  • Soybean, inoculated with effective Rhizobium japonicum 110, were grown by sand culture with nutrient solution containing either of 0, 1, 3, 10 or 30mM NO3-/l, and analyzed growth characteristics, NR activity, N2-fixation activity, and changes of ureide contents during the growing period. The amount of nodule formation decreased abruptly by nitrate treatment, the maximum nodule dry weight was 1.59, 1.05, 0.78, 0.09 and 0.008 g plant-1, respectively for each treatment on the 98th day. Specfic activity of N2-fixation showed the maximum rates of 140, 101, 37, 5 and 2.2 nM dw.mg-1.hr-1, respectively for each treatment in the earlier growth period. The maximum acetylene reduction activity on the 98th day after sowing was 81.5, 35.3, 14.3, 0.1 and 0.0045 $\mu$M C2H4 plant-1.hr-1, respectively for 0, 1, 3, 10 and 30 mM of NO3- gradients. Nitrate reduction activity increased along with nitrate gradients, and decreased abruptly with age. Relative abundance of ureides in plant organs was high in reproductive growth, and showed the maximum value in fully symbiotic dependent plant. Relative abundance of ureides in stem is a useful indication for the evaluation of nitrogen fixation in nodules of symbiotic plant.

  • In this study, the selenium (Se) accumulations of soybean sprouts and mungbean sprouts treated with various concentrations of Se-solutions were evaluated, as part of a broader effort to produce Se-enriched variants of the plants. Four levels of sodium selenate ($Na_{2}SeO_{4}$)-dissolved solutions (i.e. 0, T0; 6, T1; 60, T2; and $600{\mu}g/mL$, T3) were prepared and sprayed onto the plants during cultivation. The effect of different spraying periods on Se accumulation was also assessed by watering plant groups once a day for periods of one, two, or three days. Se solution remaining on the surfaces of the plants was washed out by spraying with distilled water on the final day of cultivation. However, the increase of Se accumulation in the plants was found to depend on both Se-concentration and watering period, and the soybean sprouts were determined to accumulate Se more effectively than the mungbean sprouts. Additionally, with regard to Se accumulation in the plants, the period of application of Se solution was determined to be more important than the concentration of the Se solution applied. The averaged total levels of Se-enrichment in whole soybean sprouts at T0, T1, T2, and T3 were 0.26, 65.86, 179.62, and $525.12{\mu}g/dry$ matter (DM) g, respectively, and the relative equations relating Se enrichment in soybean sprouts (Y) against watering days (X) were Y=32.505X-36.17 (T1), Y=88.46X-92.04 (T2), and Y=251.11X-254.9(T3). The averaged total levels of Se-enrichment in the whole mungbean sprouts at T1, T2, and T3 group were 0.05, 3.64, and $101.43{\mu}g/DM$ g, respectively, and the relative equations relating Se enrichment (Y) to watering days (X) for mungbean sprouts were Y=1.67X-1.3467 at T1 and Y=48.035X-46.907 at T2. The results of this study suggest that soybean sprouts and mungbean sprouts enriched with bioavailable Se can be produced on a large scale by Se supplementation, allowing for the development of healthy functional foods such as Se-enriched mungbean sprout soups and salads, Se-enriched functional drink and food additives, and selenium tablets to promote health.

  • Physico-chemical characteristics of glutinuous rice during soaking treatment at different temperature for Yu-Kwa (Korean traditional glutinous rice cake) processing were determined. Crude fat and protein contents of soaked glutinous rice decreased up to 30% to 50%, respectively, compared to raw rice, but there was a little difference in soaking periods. As the soaking period increased pH of soaking solution was decreased from 6.4 to 3.3, while Brix was increased from 0.5 to 13.6. Titration acidity of soaking solution and soaked rice were increased to 22.9 and 3.4, respectively, as the soaking period increased to 9 days at $20^{\circ}C$ soaking, but it was increased rapidly to 29.8 and 4.0, respectively, at $30^{\circ}C$. The three kinds of free sugar such as glucose, sucrose and maltose were detected. Glucose was the major produced free sugar during soaking, sucrose was not detected after 1 day soaking period. Characteristics of amylographic viscosity on soaked rice showed that there are no difference in pasting temperature by the soaking time and temperature, but the maximum viscosity was drastically increased on $1{\sim}2\;day$ soaking period and decreased rapidly after $2{\sim}3\;day$.

  • In this study, we investigated antimutagenic and anticancer activities of leaf mustard (LM, Brassica juncea) and leaf mustard kimchi (LMK) during their fermentation period. Methanol extracts were prepared from raw mustard, brined leaf mustard in 10% Gueun salt solution for 2 hrs, leaf mustard fermented at 15$^{\circ}C$ for 5 days after brined in 10% Guenun salt solution for 2 hrs (Fr-LM), fresh leaf mustard kimchi (Fresh-LMK) and optimally ripened leaf mustard kimchi fermented at 5$^{\circ}C$ for 30 days (OR-LMK). OR-LMK showed the strongest inhibitory activities against the mutagenicities induced by aflatoxin B1 in Salmonella Typhimurium TA100. LMs and LMKs inhibited the survival or growth of AGS human gastric adenocarcinoma cells and HT-29 human colon carcinoma cells in MTT assay and growth inhibition test. Among the extracts, OR-LMK and FR-LM exhibited strong antiproliferative effect against cancer cells, especially HT-29 cells. DAPI staining assay showed that OR-LMK induced apoptosis cell death of HT-29 cells in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that leaf mustards and leaf mustard kimchi have chemopreventive activities.

  • The corrosion behavior of high chromium white cast iron was studied in 0.5 mol dm-3 H2SO4 + 0.01 mol dm-3 HCl solution over time through electrochemical and immersion experiments. Potentiodynamic and potentiostatic polarizations revealed active-passivation transition behavior, with critical current densities observed at -0.27 VSSE and 0.00 VSSE, repectively. The former potential showed preferential dissolution of primary γ phases, while the latter one showed preferential dissolution of eutectic γ phases. Immersion tests showed an exponential increase in corrosion rate, with significant acceleration observed around 1000 seconds due to the onset of eutectic γ phase dissolution. Over a 24-hour immersion period, both γ phases exhibited extensive corrosion, leaving carbides largely intact. These findings elucidate distinct corrosion behaviors of high chromium white cast iron in acidic environments, providing critical insights into material performance evaluation. Understanding these mechanisms is essential for predicting the longevity and durability of materials in corrosive conditions, thereby informing better material design and application strategies.

  • For more esthetic treatments the use of composite in molar areas are increasing. But polymerzation shrinkage that cause marginal leakage and cuspal deflection has been the problems of composites. The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of low intensity curing and polishing period on marginal leakage. Cavities were prepared on the buccal or lingual surface of forty five sound extracted human teeth and etching, application of bonding agent and filling of composite was done. Group 1 was light cured at intensity of 600$mW/cm^2$ for 41 seconds and polished. Group 2 was light cured at intensity of 300$mW/cm^2$ for 2 seconds and polished and after polishing it was light cured for 40 seconds at 600$mW/cm^2$. Group 3 was light cured at intensity of 300$mW/cm^2$ for 2 seconds and waited for 5 minutes and after curing at 600$mW/cm^2$ for 40 seconds polishing was done. The specimens were thermocycled at $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ for 1000 cycles and immersed in 2% methylene blue solution for 24 hours. Composite-tooth interface was examined under stereobinocular microscope for dye penetration. The results were as follows : 1. Group which were cured at low intensity and polished after curing at high intensity showed less marginal leakage than group which were cured at high intensity for 41 seconds(p<0.05). 2. Marginal leakage between group which were cured at low intensity and polished immediately and group which were cured at high intensity for 41 second were not significantly different. Light curing at low intensity can reduce marginal leakage but polishing immediately after curing at low intensity for short time can affect marginal leakage.

  • Carrot leaves have many nutrients as well as roots, which will increase the demand for carrot leaves in the future. This study was carried out by dividing into two stages: high temperature and low temperature periods, in order to investigate the possibility of cultivation of carrot leaves and the composition and EC of the nutrient solution for growth and quality of carrot leaves. Composition of nutrient solution($NO_3-N:16.0$, $NH_4-N:1.0$, P: 1.0, K: 11.0, Ca: 2.0, Mg: 1.0, $SO_4-S:1.0mM{\cdot}L^{-1}$) developed by analysis of plant. In the high temperature range (From June $29^{th}$ to Sep. $8^{th}$, 2016), the concentration of the developed nutrient solution (JNU) were 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and $4.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and the concentration of nutrient solution of Japanese Horticultural Station(JHS) $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ was used for comparison. In the low temperature range (From Dec. $31^{st}$, 2015 to Feb. $29^{th}$, 2016), the concentration of the developed nutrient solution 1.0, 2.0, and $3.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ were used. Growth was investigated in root fresh and dry weights, shoot fresh and dry weights, leaf number, and leaf area of carrot. In the high temperature range, the leaf area and shoot fresh and dry weights were good at 1.0 and $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. The sugar content of the root was the highest at the EC $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, and the chlorophyll content was the highest at the EC $4.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. In the low temperature range, The shoot fresh and dry weights were the highest at EC 1.0 and $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. There was no significant difference in sugar content and chlorophyll content. As a result, from the viewpoint of growth and quality of carrot, it is good to cultivate EC 1.0 and $2.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in high temperature period and low temperature period, but EC $1.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ is economical perspective such as fertilizer input.
