  • An autocorrelation method is used in pitch estimation. Autocorrelation values in time and frequency domains, which have different characteristics, correspond to the pitch period and fundamental frequency, respectively. We utilize an integrated autocorrelation method in time and frequency domains. It can remove the errors of pitch doubling and having. In the time and frequency domains, pitch period and fundamental frequency have reciprocal relation to each other. Especially, fundamental frequency estimation ends up as an error because of the resolution of FFT. To reduce these artifacts, interpolation methods are applied in the integrated autocorrelation domain, which decreases pitch errors. Moreover, only for the pitch candidates found in a time domain, the corresponding frequency-domain autocorrelation values are calculated with reduced computational complexity. Using linear interpolation, we can decrease the required number of FFT coefficients by 8 times. Thus, compared to the conventional methods, computational complexity can be reduced by 9.5 times.

  • This paper presents quasi-zero-stiffness (QZS) characteristic of a passive isolator using flexures under compression force. The passive isolator consists of a positive stiffness element (a vertical coil spring) and a negative stiffness element (flexures under compression force), and their proper combination of the positive and negative stiffness elements can produce both substantial static and zero dynamic stiffness, so called QZS. Firstly, a nonlinear dimensionless expression of a flexure under compression force is derived. A dynamic model of the passive isolator is developed and numerical simulations of its time and frequency response are performed. Then, undesirable nonlinear vibration is quantified using a period doubling bifurcation diagram and a Poincare's map of the isolator under forced excitation. Finally, experiments are performed to validate the QZS characteristic of the passive isolator.

  • We study the characteristics of oscillating in non-autonomous condition and the conducted noise generation in a RL-photocoupler circuit. This circuit may be shown a period-doubling and a chaos dynamics under any specific conditions of input circuit. But, the relationship between input signals and output signals is different according to the amplitude of driving input voltage. Then, the oscillation noise was analyzed with respect to both the frequency and the amplitude of an external ac signal and do values. The results show that the noise-induced oscillations for falling and rising cycles induced by kick-back effect in an inductor, nonlinear capacitance, nonlinear resistance and charge storage time in a diode and an LED. We also compared the simulation with the experimental results.

  • By employing the nonlocal continuum field theory of Eringen and Von Karman nonlinear strains, this paper presents an analytical model for linear and nonlinear dynamics analysis of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) conveying fluid with different boundary conditions. In the linear analysis the natural frequencies and critical flow velocities of SWNTs are computed. However, in the nonlinear analysis the effect of nonlocal parameter on nonlinear dynamics of cantilevered SWNTs conveying fluid is investigated by using bifurcation diagram, phase plane and Poincare map. Numerical results confirm existence of chaos as well as a period-doubling transition to chaos.

  • The word ‘growth’ represents an increase in actual size, implying a change of state. In science and technology, growth may imply an increase in number of institutions, scientists, or publications, etc. The present study demonstrates the growth of neurology literature for the period 1961-2010. A total of 291,702 records were extracted from the Science Direct Database for fifty years. The Relative Growth Rate (RGR) and Doubling Time (Dt.) of neurology literature have been calculated, supplementing with different growth patterns to check whether neurology literature fits exponential, linear, or logistic models. The results of the study indicate that the growth of literature in neurology does not follow the linear, or logistic growth model. However, it follows closely the exponential growth model. The study concludes that there has been a consistent trend towards increased growth of literature in the field of neurology.

  • Torsional oscillations of a system incorporating a Hooke's joint are investigated by adopting a nonlinear 2-degree-of-freedom model. Linear and Van der Pol transformations are applied to obtain the equations of motion to which the method of averaging can be readily applied. Various subharmonic and combination resonances are identified with the conditions of their occurrences. Applying the method of averaging leads to the reduced amplitude- and phase-equations of motion, of which constant and periodic solutions are obtained numerically. The periodic solution which emerges from Hopf bifurcation point experiences period doubling bifurcation leading to infinite solution rather than chaotic solution.

  • This paper predicted nonlinear dynamic responses of a cantilevered carbon nanotube(CNT) resonator incorporating the electrostatic forces and van der Waals interactions between the CNT cantilever and ground plane. The structural model of CNT includes geometric and inertial nonlinearities to investigate various phenomena of nonlinear responses of the CNT due to the electrostatic excitation. In order to solve this problem, we used Galerkin's approximation and the numerical integration techniques. As a result, the CNT nano-resonator shows the softening effect through saddle-node bifurcation near primary resonance frequency with increasing the applied AC and DC voltages. Also we can predict nonlinear secondary resonances such as superharmonic and subharmonic resonances. The superharmonic resonance of the nano-resonator is influenced by applied AC voltage. The period-doubling bifurcation leads to the subharmonic resonance which occurs when the nano-resonator is actuated by electrostatic forces as parametric excitation.

  • Numerical schemes are routinely used to predict the behavior of continuous dynamical systems. All such schemes transform flows into maps, which can possess dynamical behavior deviating from their continuous counterparts. Here the common bifurcations of scalar dynamical systems are transformed under a class of algorithms known as linearized one-point collocation methods. Through the use of normal forms, we prove that each such bifurcation in an originating flow gives rise to an exactly corresponding one in its discretization. The conditions for spurious period doubling behavior under this class of algorithm are derived. We discuss the global behavioral consequences of a singular set induced by the discretizing methods, including loss of monotonicity of solutions, intermittency, and distortion of attractor basins.

  • The model of a power system with load dynamics is studied by investigating qualitative changes in its behavior as the reactive power demand at a load bus is increased. The load is created using induction motors parallel with the constant power and constant impedance load. As the load increases, the system experiences various bifurcations such as sub critical and supercritical Hopf, period-doubling and saddle-node bifurcation. The latter may lead the system to voltage collapse. A nonlinear controller is used to control the subcritical Hopf bifurcation and hence mitigate voltage collapse. It is applied to the KEPCO (Korean Electric Power Company) system to demonstrate its validity.
