A computationally-efficient method for multi-criteria optimisation is developed for performance-based seismic design of friction energy dissipation dampers in RC structures. The proposed method is based on the concept of Uniform Distribution of Deformation (UDD), where the slip-load distribution along the height of the structure is gradually modified to satisfy multiple performance targets while minimising the additional loads imposed on existing structural elements and foundation. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated through optimisation of 3, 5, 10, 15 and 20-storey RC frames with friction wall dampers subjected to design representative earthquakes using single and multi-criteria optimisation scenarios. The optimum design solutions are obtained in only a few steps, while they are shown to be independent of the selected initial slip loads and convergence factor. Optimum frames satisfy all predefined design targets and exhibit up to 48% lower imposed loads compared to designs using a previously proposed slip-load distribution. It is also shown that dampers designed with optimum slip load patterns based on a set of spectrum-compatible synthetic earthquakes, on average, provide acceptable design solutions under multiple natural seismic excitations representing the design spectrum.

Performance-based design concept is needed to evaluate the seismic capacity of building. In this study, the method estimating the performance point of the spatial structures based on capacity spectrum method (CSM) is proposed. And for efficient evaluation for the performance point of the spatial structures, the algorithm to convert spatial structural system to ESDOF system is simulated Its efficiency is confirmed by comparing with time history analysis of full model. And dynamic behaviors of spatial structures are examined by using this method. At last, evaluation of structural performance according to variation of stiffness after plastic deformation on the substructures is carried out.

This study aims to suggest a simple and convenient design for a mix proportion method for high performance concrete by determining the optimum fine aggregate ratio and minimum binder content based on the maximum density theory. The mix design method introduced in this study adopted the optimum fine aggregate ratio with a minimum void and binder content higher than the minimum binder content level. The research results reveal that the method helps to reduce trial and error in the mixing process and is a convenient way of producing high performance concrete with self filler ability. In an experiment based on the mix proportion method, when aggregate with the fine aggregation ratio of 41$\%$ was used, the minimum binder content of high performance concrete was 470kg/$m^{3}$ and maximum aggregate capacity was $0.657m^{3}/m^{3}$. In addition, in mixing high performance concrete, the optimal slump flow to meet filler ability was 65$\pm$5cm, V load flow speed ranged from 0.5 to 1.5.
When eccentrically braced steel frames (EBFs) are in the desired failure mode, links yield at each layer and column bases appear plastically hinged. Traditional design methods cannot accurately predict the inelastic behavior of structures owing to the use of capacity-based design theory. This paper proposes the use of performance-based seismic design (PBSD) method for planning eccentrically braced frames. PBSD can predict and control inelastic deformation of structures by target drift and failure mode. In buildings designed via this process, all links dissipate energy in the rare event of an earthquake, while other members remain in elastic state, and as the story drift is uniform along the structure height, weak layers will be avoided. In this condition, eccentrically braced frames may be more easily rehabilitated after the effects of an earthquake. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated through a sample case study of ten-story K-type EBFs and Y- type EBFs buildings, and is validated by pushover analysis and dynamic analysis. The ultimate state of frames designed by the proposed method will fail in the desired failure mode. That is, inelastic deformation of structure mainly occurs in links; each layer of links involved dissipates energy, and weak layers do not exist in the structure. The PBSD method can provide a reference for structural design of eccentrically braced steel frames.
Today, building constructions are becoming larger, higher, deeper, and complex to improve quality of human life and meet various needs. As a result, new design space for non - typically standardized space has been created, and targets for performance-based design are also becoming increased. An evacuation safety evaluation of performance-based design should be compared with ASET and RSET estimation so that the value of RSET does not exceed the value of ASET. However, there is a problem that it is difficult to secure the safety with using the performance-based design evaluation method currently in use, especially in case of the underground parking lot, because it has wide compartment area and various routes for evacuation. Therefore, in order to overcome these problems, this paper first investigates the simulation setting method of the performance-based design that is currently in use, and then conducts two fire simulations and three evacuation simulations for underground parking lots each time, so performs the evacuation safety evaluationin total six cases of situations. Here this paper analyzes the problem with comparative evaluation research and suggests the better solution for improved evacuation safety evaluation of performance-based design.
Recent advances in the field of control theory have enabled us to design active vibration control systems for various structures. In many studies, the controller used to suppress vibration has been synthesized for the given mathematical model of structure. In these cases, the designer has not been able to utilize the degree of freedom to adjust the structural parameters of the control object. To overcome this problem, so called 'Structure/Control Simultaneous Optimization Method' is used. In this context of view, this paper is concerned with the active vibration control of bridge towers, platforms and ocean vehicles etc. Simultaneous design method is used to achieve optimal system performance. Here, a general framework for the simultaneous design problem of output feedback case is introduced based on LMI (Linear Matrix Inequality). The simulation results show that the proposed design method achieves desirable control performance.

The purpose of this paper is to design a DVL-RPM based VKF (Velocity Kalman Filter) design for a performance improvement underwater integrated navigation system. The proposed approach relies on a VKF, augmented by a altitude from Echo-sounder based switching architecture to yield robust performance, even when DVL (Doppler Velocity Log) exceeds the measurement range and the measured value is unable to be valid. The proposed approach relies on two parts: 1) Indirect feedback navigation Kalman filter design, 2) VKF design. To evaluate proposed method, we compare the results of the VKF aided navigation system with simulation result from a PINS (Pure Inertial Navigation System) and conventional INS-DVL method. Simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the underwater navigation system assisted by the additional DVL-RPM based VKF in underwater environment.

In this paper, a reliability-based design optimization is developed for the topology design of linear structures using a performance measure approach. Spatial domain is discretized using three dimensional Reissner-Mindlin plate elements and design variable is taken as the material property of each element. A continuum based adjoint variable method is employed for the efficient computation of sensitivity with respect to the design and random variables. The performance measure approach of RBDO is employed to evaluate the probabilistic constraints. The topology optimizationproblem is formulated to have probabilistic displacement constraints. The uncertainties such as material property and external loads are considered. Numerical examples show that the developed topology optimization method could effectively yield a reliable design, comparing with the other methods such as deterministic, safety factor, and worst case approaches.

This study introduces a general reliability-based, performance-based design framework to design frames regarding their uncertainties and user-defined design goals. The Iterative-R method extracted from the main framework can designate a proper R (i.e., response modification factor) satisfying the design goal regarding target reliability index and pre-defined probability of collapse. The proposed methodology is based on FEMA P-695 and can be used for all systems that FEMA P-695 applies. To exemplify the method, multiple three-dimensional, four-story steel special moment-resisting frames are considered. Closed-form relationships are fitted between frames' responses and the modeling parameters. Those fits are used to construct limit state functions to apply reliability analysis methods for design safety assessment and the selection of proper R. The frameworks' unique feature is to consider arbitrarily defined probability density functions of frames' modeling parameters with an insignificant analysis burden. This characteristic enables the alteration in those parameters' distributions to meet the design goal. Furthermore, with sensitivity analysis, the most impactful parameters are identifiable for possible improvements to meet the design goal. In the studied examples, it is revealed that a proper R for frames with different levels of uncertainties could be significantly different from suggested values in design codes, alarming the importance of considering the stochastic behavior of elements' nonlinear behavior.
