  • Economic crisis in Korea since December 1997 had tremendously affected consumer behavior. This study examined consumer perception of the economic crisis and investigated its impacts on consumer ethnocentrism and purchase behaviors of foreign products. Two product categories of clothing and cosmetics were selected fro empirical testing. Data were obtained from a questionnaire survey to female consumers in Korea during September 1998, and 468 responses were analyzed. The consumer perception of the economic crisis(PCEP) scale was developed for the study. Correlation and regression analyses revealed: 1) the positive relationship between PCEP and consumer ethnocentrism(ETHN); 2) the positive effects of attitude toward foreign products(ATTI) on actual purchase of foreign products since the economic crisis(PB) and on purchase intention of foreign products(PI) for both clothing and cosmetics; 3) the negative effect of ETHN on PI for both product categories; and 4) the negative effects of PCEP on PB and PI for clothing.

  • This study aimed to investigate the changed consciousness and expenditure on Kyong-Jo after IMF economic crisis and the some factors which have effects on the change. The expenditure on Kyong-Jo included donations and gifts associated with congratulations and condolences. The data were collected through the personal questionnaire on Cheju Island. The sample consisted of 400 married adults whose age were between 20 to 65. The independent variables were some individual characteristics, household related variables, and Kyong-Jo related variables. The dependent variables included the change in consciousness and expenditure on Kyong-Jo. The data were analyzed by methods such as frequencies, means, Multiple Regression and Logistic Regression analysis. Major results were as follows. The respondents perceived that Kyong-Jo is fundamentally a good custom to help each other when some one is in the hard time. Their perception of the expenditure on Kyong-Jo has not been changed even since IMF economic crisis. 70% of the respondents staid that there was little difference of the expenditure on Kyong-Jo before and after IMF economic crisis. This trend is in contrast to the perception and the expenditure of the people who lived in the other residences after IMF economic crisis. The factors which had significant effects on the respondent's consciousness of the expenditure on Kyong-Jo were occupation, whether owns a house or not, household income, and household assets. The change of household expenditure on Kyong-Jo was effected by the respondent's sex, occupation, household income, household assets, and social network. These results suggested that the respondents on Cheju Island more strongly hold the conservative perception to the expenditure on Kyong-Jo rather than the people in other residences.

  • The purpose of this paper is to review China's perception on the U.S. power after the global financial crisis. Although economic power of U.S. was declined by the global financial crisis, U.S. hegemony in the international order still maintains. Gap of national power between U.S. and China may be narrow because of decline of U.S. economic power. It can be predicted China will push a policy that secures an initiative of reform in the global monetary system and is going to take a more cooperative policy without U.S. hegemony power harming China's core interests.

  • This paper attempts to analyze labor politics under the Kim Young-Sam regime. The labor politics transformed from conflictual pluralism to social partnership. The transition was triggered by the 'IMF economic crisis,' and the transitional direction was determined by the character of political regime and the pattern of social coalitions. These findings imply that the transitional direction of labor politics is not determined by an economic crisis or international pressure, but by the relational dynamics of social coalitions forcing social actors to new perception and strategic choice.

  • This study conducted an empirical analysis through a survey to analyze the effect of social risk perception caused by COVID-19 on college students' cosmetics purchase behavior. Factors were extracted through factor analysis, and Pearson's correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the correlation of each factor and the impact of variables. To this end, a statistical analysis was conducted using 320 copies of the questionnaire as a sample. Studies have shown that the higher the fear of COVID-19, the higher the fear of infection, changes in life, and awareness of the economic crisis, and the higher the tendency to buy ostentatiously, habitually, and reasonably. The more changes in life, the higher the awareness of the economic crisis, and the higher the trademark habitual purchase and rational purchase behavior. Fear of infection has been shown to affect trademark habitual purchases, and fear of infection and changes in life have been shown to have a significant impact on rational purchase behavior.

  • This article examines the shifts in discourse surrounding Korean dramas in Malaysia, a core market for the Korean Wave (Hallyu), to understand the evolving perceptions and reception of Hallyu as a role model. Employing a discourse analysis of 14 Malaysian newspapers available online from 2016 to 2022, a period marked by the rise of over-the-top (OTT) media, the study reveals a significant transition in the prevailing narrative. From 2016 to 2019, the dominant discourse was characterized by conservatism and "cultural protectionism," reflecting a tension in attitudes towards the Korean Wave. However, from 2020 onwards, there was a gradual change in perceptions and attitudes, with an increasing emphasis on the economic and cultural value of Hallyu. This shift towards an "economic discourse" illustrates a growing perception of Korean dramas as an opportunity and catalyst for regional economic development in the Malaysian context, rather than a crisis. The study highlights the dynamic nature of the Korean Wave discourse in Malaysia and its evolution in response to the changing media landscape and socio-economic factors.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the psychological characteristics of the unemployed, and their children's negative emotions and behavioral changes in the context of the increasing family dysfunction caused by the IMF economic crisis. The subjects were 184 public labor workers in Busan. They answered the questions about the psychological characteristics of themselves and their children, and their children's behavioral changes. Frequency analysis, $\chi$$^2$ test and logistic regression were used for data analyses. The results were as follows. The unemployed showed high levels of negative emotions and perceived their social supports as low. As well, they interpreted their quality of life as poor. They perceived their economic difficulty as high and the perception was influenced by negative emotions as well as the economic situation. Children of the unemployed showed middle levels of negative emotions, and positive and negative behavioral changes. These changes were influenced by their parent's psychological characteristics. In light of these results, psychological counseling services from social welfare centers are needed to be more actively supporting the families of the unemployed.

  • Purpose - As globalization progresses, complexity also increases, and various factors that threaten port functions are emerging. Accordingly, the demand for port security to prevent the crisis and resilience that quickly recovers its original function after the crisis is also increasing in port operations. However, few studies have examined how to ensure the port security and how the resilience affects operation performance of port and sustainability performance as well. So the study aims to find out how port security affects port resilience and port operational performance, and consequently, this two factors affect socioeconomic and environmental sustainability performance respectively and synthetically. Design/methodology - Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was first performed to determine the validity of the factors of model and hypothesis test was performed using Structural Equation Model (SEM) to analyze the Port Performance Model, which show the perception logic among port security level, port resilience, operation performance, and sustainability performance. In order to empirically analyze this model, total 264 respondents from port security operators, shipping companies in South Korea were surveyed. Findings - As result of SEM, First, port security level positively affected the resilience (H1) and cargo operational performance (H2) but not in both of the sustainability performances (H3, H4). Second, resilience positively affected only cargo operational performance (H5) and socio-economic sustainability performance (H7). Last, cargo operation performance positively affects the both of sustainability performances (H8, H9). Originality/value - It was confirmed that port security could improve cargo operational performance through ensuring port resilience and eventually increase the socio-economic sustainability. Therefore the study implies that careful integration and management of port security, port resilience, and sustainability are required, along with compromise on sustainable development goals in the social, economic, and environmental area among all stakeholders.

  • A low level of transparency and trust in the release of government information during the COVID-19 pandemic could decrease the chance of success in handling the coronavirus outbreak. This worldwide pandemic has damaged not only human health but also created an economic and social crisis. Indonesia is no exception. Unfortunately, an analysis of a mixed-method survey of 500 participants found that public perception of transparency in the government's release of COVID-19 information is still at a low level. This perceived low level of transparency generates minimum trust in the information. Only 8% of participants trust the government's information regarding the virus. Even though the Indonesian government launched an official website, www.covid19.go.id, which is intended as a primary source of valid information about COVID-19 in Indonesia, most survey participants had never used the website. However, contrary to the low levels of perceived transparency and trust, most participants said that the messages from the government are clear and easy to understand. This contradiction resulted from skepticism toward the government. Therefore, this research presents a better understanding of how the level of transparency and trust is also related to the level of skepticism of the government.
