Stereotactic Radiation Therapy for Nasal Carcinoma with Cribriform Plate Destruction in Three Dogs: A Serial CT Study

  • Three dogs were referred with epistaxis and facial deformity. Computed tomography (CT) scan identified masses in the bilateral nasal cavity with soft tissue attenuation and contrast enhancement. These masses had caused adjacent bones lysis, especially lysis of cribriform plate that extended to the intracranial region. Base on histopathology and CT imaging results, tumors were diagnosed as nasal carcinomas at stage 4. Three dogs were treated with stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT). These dogs received 30-35 Gy from 3-5 daily treatments (7-10 Gy per treatment). The sizes of tumors decreased the most on follow-up CT images at one month after treatment. Recurrence was confirmed between 3 and 5 months after completing SRT. The survival time of dogs treated with SRT were 110, 190, and 210 days, respectively. This study confirmed that SRT could treat canine nasal carcinomas with cribriform plate lysis without causing serious radiation toxicities. Follow-up CT examination is considered at 1 month and 3 to 6 months after SRT to accurately evaluate the prognosis and the timing of recurrence.

  • This study was carried to get detailed information about the analeptic effect of yohimbine on succinylcholine muscle relaxant. Succinylcholine was administered intra- venously at a dose rate of 0.05 mg per kg of body weight and then ten minutes after the succinylcholine injection, yohimbine was administered intravenously at a dose rate of 0.1 mg per kg of body weight. The results obtained were as follows. 1. Induction time of muscle relaxation was fast and favourable as 38 seconds. 2. Mean arousal time and mean walk time were significantly shortened by yohimbine administration in the dogs immobilized with succinylcholine (p<0.01). 3. Heart rate was slightly increased after succinylcholine administration, and increased significantly after yohimbine administration compared to the control group (p<0.05). 4. Glucose concentration was slightly increased after succinylcholine administration, and decreased after yohimbine administration compared to the control group.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of chitosan-calcium sulfate mixture on early bony consolidation in osteodistracted dogs. The experimental group was divided into 3 groups: saline group(Control), chitosan group(Group CH) and chitosan-calcium sulfate mixture group(Group CH+CS). Four dogs were allocated to each group and classified into B week observation subgroups and 5 week observation subgroups, respectively. Two dogs were allocated to each subgroup. The lateral surface of the left mandibular body was exposed in the subperiosteal plane and vertical osteotomy was carried out on the mandibular body. An external distraction device was applied to the mandibular body. Mandibular distraction was started 5 days after the osteotomy at a rate of 1 m per day for a total of 10 w distraction for 10 days. After completion of distraction, chitosan, chitosan-calcium sulfate and saline were injected into the distracted zone of the group CH, group CH+CS and control. The external device was left in place for 3 or 5 weeks to allow for bony consolidation. Serial radiographs were carried out every week. Two dogs of each group, six dogs in total, were sacrificed at 3 weeks, and the other six dogs at 5 week after distraction. Bone specimens of the distracted mandibles were taken for histologic examination. New bone was not noted in the distracted zone of 3 week observation subgroups in the control and group CH. However, new bone was developed in the group CH+CS with a narrow fibrous interzone in the area of the distracted zone. While osteogenesis was mild in the margin of the distracted Bone of 5 week observation subgroup in the control, new bone was noted much in the group CH and group CH+CS. However, osteogenesis was noted more significantly in the group CH+CS than that of group CH. In conclusion, chitosan-calcium sulfate mixture was more effective on early bony consolidation in distraction osteogenesis

Correlating Height, Weight, Age and Amount of Exercise of Companion Dog: A Case Study for Yong-In City

  • Background: Exercise is necessary for the health of companion dogs. It is necessary to determine the relationship between height, weight, age and amount of exercise for the purpose of companion dog's health. Objectives: A survey was conducted in this study to small-dog owners living in Yongin city, Gyeonggi-do about their canine healthcare awareness. Design: Questionnaire design. Methods: The questionnaire was composed of exercise amount, type of exercise, and the necessity of exercise, general health condition, and environment. A total of 139 survey results were obtained. The average value of each item was analyzed and expressed in terms of frequency and percentage. Then, Pearson's correlation coefficients were used to find the relationship between these items. Results: The weight and height were not shown to have a significant difference in the amount of exercise in the results. The weight had a weak positive correlation with "exercise time of canine per day". The age had a weak negative correlation with "the number of canine exercise per week" and "frequency of canine exercise per day", while it had a weak positive correlation with "self-assessment of canine lack of exercise". Conclusion: Based on this study, it is believed that in the future, various environments where dogs can exercise are believed to be necessary for the era of convergence.

Ethylene glycol 중독견의 임상병리학적 소견 (Clinico-pathological findings of experimental ethylene glycol poisoning in dogs)

  • Present study was undertaken in order to find out the most significant laboratory test for the early diagnosis of ethylene glycol poisoning in dogs. Seven dogs weighing from 5.0kg to 19.3kg were administered orally 6ml or l0ml of ethylene glycol per kilogram of body weight. In addition to clinical observations, blood samples were taken from the jugular vein on 0, 1, 3, 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours or until death after the adminisration and examined for the hematological, blood chemical, venous blood gas and electrolyte changes. Urine samples were simultaneously taken and examined for pH, protein, glucose and calcium oxalate crystals in the sediments. The results were as follows : 1. All dogs showed marked hypothermia in addition to the characteristic signs of ethylene glycol poisoning until death. 2. No significant hematological changes were observable after the administration of ethylene glycol except the secondary dehydration and stress leukogram. 3. Chemical values related to the liver function(serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, total serum protein, serum albumin, serum total bilirubin) showed no significant changes during the experimental period in all dogs. 4. Chemical values related to the renal function(BUN and creatinine) showed significant(p<0.0l, p<0.001) increase from 24 hours to death in all dogs. 5. All dogs showed significant(p<0.01, p<0.001) decrease in blood pH from 3 hours to death after the ethylene glycol administration. 6. All dogs showed significant(p<0.05, p<0.01, p<0.001) increaes in anion gap from 1 hour to death after the ethylene glycol administration. 7. All dogs showed significant(p<0.05, p<0.01) decrease in urine pH from 1 hour to 6 hours after the administration of ethylene glycol. 8. Characteristic envelope form of calcium oxalate crystals were found in the urinary sediment from 6 hours after the administration of ethylene glycol in all dogs. 9. Histologically calcium oxalate crystals were found in the renal rubles in all dogs. 10. From these results, it may be concluded that the examinations of urinary sediments for the calcium oxalate crystals, blood or urinary pH and blood anion gap are most reliable tests for the early diagnosis of ethylene glycol poisoning in dogs.

국내 애완견에서 Helicobacter spp의 감염 (Infection of Helicobacter sup. in Gastric Mucosa of Domestic Pet Dogs)

  • Prevalence of Helicobacter infection in pet dogs and positive relations between the presence of Helicobacter app. and gastritis were studied. Twenty-one dogs, which died of various disease, were referred from three animal hospitals and necropsied. Upon histopathological examination, Helicobacter-like organisms (HLO) were observed only in the gastric mucosa of 5 (23.5%) out of the 21 stomachs. The bacteria mainly colonized in the mucus, gastric pits, and the lumen of gastric glands. Regardless of HLO infection, there was mild to moderate lymphocytic infiltration in fundic and pyloric mucosa. Average gastritis scores of the group infected with HLO were 1.250${\pm}$0.214 and 1.833${\pm}$0.167 in the fundic and pyloric mucosa, whereas those of uninfected group were 1.000${\pm}$0.165 and 1.625${\pm}$0.239, respectively. Accordingly, we concluded that no association exists between HLO infection and gastritis.

강원도 춘천 지역 개의 비만 유병률과 위험요인에 대한 단면연구 (A Cross-sectional Study on the Prevalence of Canine Obesity and Associated Risk Factors in Chuncheon, Kangwon Province)

  • As with humans, overweight or obesity is a major health concern in the companion animal population. A cross-sectional questionnaire-based survey of dog owners attending primary small animal veterinary practices from different areas in Chuncheon, Kangwon province, Korea was undertaken to explore the relationships between socioeconomic and other relevant risk factors associated with canine obesity. In addition, the author was to estimate the prevalence of obesity compared to published literatures for dogs. Owners were asked about dog age, neuter status, feeding habits, dog exercise, household income and owner age. The body condition score (BCS) of the dogs was also assessed. Multivariable binary logistic regression was used to assess the association between BCS and potential risk factors controlling for confounding variables, using odds ratios (OR), 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A total of 275 dogs (136 males and 139 females) aged 1-12 years (mean age $5.6{\pm}3.7$ years) were surveyed in 2013. Of these, 46.9% of dogs (n = 129) were classed as an ideal body shape (BCS = 3), 30.9% (n = 85) were overweight (BCS = 4), 8.4% (n = 23) were obese (BCS = 5) and 13.8% (n = 38) were underweight (BCS = 1 or 2). Neutered males and spayed females had the highest prevalence of obesity (43.4% and 33.9%); intact females had the lowest prevalence of obesity (31.6%). In univariable model, risk factors associated with canine obesity are multifactorial and include owner income, owner age, age of dog, neuter status, frequency of feeding per day, frequency of snacks and consultation with veterinarian on dog's weight. In final multivariable logistic regression model, dogs whose owners reported no consultation with veterinarians for weight management were significantly more likely to be obesity than ideal (OR = 7.6, 95% CI, 4.2-13.8; p < 0.0001). This study showed a high prevalence of obesity in domestic companion dogs. Since this was a cross-sectional study with small samples, the association of canine obesity with risk factors warrants more research. To the author's best knowledge, this is the first Korean study on dog body condition and obesity.

  • A subacute toxicity study of cis-Malonato[(4R,5R)-4,5-bis(aminomethyl)-2-isopropyl-1,3-dioxolane]platinum(II)(SKI 2053R) was carried out to obtain information on its toxicological profiles, and to determine the maximum tolerated dose in beagle dogs. Four groups of beagle dogs (2M and 2F per group, 0,0.5,1.0,2.0mg/kg/day)were given 15 i.v. injections of SKI 2053R. In order to compare the toxic effects of SKI 2053R with those of cisplatin, one group was treated with cisplatin(0.7mg/kg/day)according to the same treatment schedule. The dosing schedule was divided into 3 courses of 5 consecutive days with 23-day dose-free intervals between each course. After completion of the treatments, remaining dogs were necropsied under established guidelines. Three of four dogs in the high dose group and one of four dogs in the middle dose group treated with SKI 2053R died of hypovolemic shock secondary to hemorrhagic and ulcerative enterocolitis. No toxicity-related mortality occurred in the low dose group of SKI 2053R. No survivor was observed in the group of cisplatin. Clinical signs including vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and loss body weight were apparent in dogs given either cisplatin or high and middle doses of SKI 2053R. Severe thrombocytopenia and leukocytopenia were observed in the high dose group of SKI 2053R and cisplatin-treatment group, while toxicities as bone marrow suppression were reversible. The significant elevation of serum ALP values in group of SKI 2053R(2.0 mg/kg/day and 1.0mg/kg/day) and cisplatin(0.7mg/kg/day)was observed. Slight proteinuria waa observed in high and middle dose level groups of SKI 2053R. In histopathological examinations, pathological alterations of liver, kidney and spleen were noted dose-dependantly in dogs treated with SKI 2053R, and there was no overt sign of toxicity in low dose group of SKI 2053R. Compared to SKI 2053R, more severe durg-related toxicities occurred in dogs treated with cisplatin. It waw estimated that maximum tolerated dose of SKI 2053R in this treatment schedule was 0.5~0.7mg/kg/day. In conclusion, overall toxic potential of SKI 2053R was approximately 3 times lower than that of cisplatin with respect of lethality.

Butorphanol의 투여가 장문합술 후 개의 행동에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Butorphanol on Behavior after Intestinal Anastomosis in Dogs)

  • 본 연구는 개에서 장문합술 후 비침습적인 행동관찰을 통해 통증을 평가하기 위하여 수행되었으며, 또한 이를 토대로 butorphanol의 진통효과에 대해 연구하였다. 본 실험에서 대조군은 마취를 실시하였으나 장문합술은 시행되지 않았다. 진통제 투여군의 5마리 개들에게는 장문합술을 실시하였고 butorphanol을 투여하였다. 진통제 비투여군의 5마리 개들에게는 진통제 투여 없이 장문합술을 실시하였다. 진통제 투여군의 개들은 수술 전 그리고 수술직후 butorphanol(0.4mg/kg, IM)이 투여되었고, 반면에 대조군과 진통제를 투여하지 않은 군에서는 동일한 양의 멸균 생리식염수가 투여되었다. 개의 행동은 마취 후 400분 동안 비디오테이프로 기록되었고, 그 시간에 실험자는 매 80분마다 개와 상호작용을 하였다. 각각의 상호작용에서, 실험자는 관찰된 행동을 바탕으로 멜버른 대학의 통증 측정방법을 이용하여 통증 점수를 기록하였다. 한 사람의 관찰자에 의해 정량화 된 상호작용과 비 상호작용의 행동을 측정하기 위하여 한 개체에 집중하는 연속적 표본 추출 방법이 적용되었다. 발성은 마취 후 400분 동안 녹음하였고 소리 길이, 소리 강도, 소리 pitch와 1-4 포먼트를 분석하였다. 외과수술은 통증측정 점수를 증가시켰다. 실험자와의 상호작용 중에서 수술 후 인사하는 행동이 감소되었다. 진통제를 투여한 수술군과 위약을 투여한 군사이의 차이점은 정량화된 행동측정과 발성을 통하여 구별할 수 있었다. Butorphanol을 투여한 수술군과 위약을 투여한 군 사이에는 유의적인 차이를 관찰할 수 있었다 (p< 0.05).

동결건조한 산양뼈의 개이식 효과 (Effectiveness of Transplantation by Freeze-Dried Bone of Goat to Dogs)

  • Freeze-dried cortical bones of the goat were transplanted to the experimental fibular defect of 10 dogs for valuating the possibility of xenogeneic bone implantation and the specificity of BM(Bone Morphogenetic Protein). The . freeze-dried cortical bone eliminated antigens and defatted with chloroform and methanol were freeze-dried at $-80{\circ}C$ for preservation of BMP and then sterilized with 50 gas and storaged in room temperature. Ten freeze-dried cortical implants of the goat were transplanted in experimentally defected regions of bilateral fibula of 5 dogs in clinically normal. The transplanted region had been radiographed for observing state of bone union and BALPOone Alkaline Phosphatase) in the serum of the host was measured for valuating activity of oteoblast per 2 week-interval after transplant procedures. New bone formation had been observed early in one of ten regions around implants about the same time as autoimplant regions. It was incorporated with its host bone during 4-12 weeks after transplantation. In another 2 cases of 2 dogs, new bone formation and absorption of implant had been observed from 4 weeks but they were not incorporated completely until 20 weeks. The rest of the freeze-dried bone implants, 7 cases of 4 dogs had not been observed new bone formation nor absorption of implants. The freeze-drying method for implants means to not influence bone incorporation. Although less of union percentages the union form of this experiment were similar to alloimplantation and it may mean to block immunity reaction that disturbs the bone induction by BMP. It demonsknted that the possibility of the xenogenous bone implantation is recognized by reason of the low specificity of BMP between goat and dog.
